Was Dead Island 2 Worth The Wait?

  • It’s been nine years since Dead Island 2 was announced at E3 2014. Since then, the game has been stuck in a sort of development apocalypse that rivals the one that features within its own fiction. Over the last decade, four separate development studios have attempted to ship Dead Island 2. Four! Series creator Techland, Spec Ops: The Line developers Yager Development, British outfit Sumo Digital and finally, publisher Deep Silver’s own internal studio Dambuster. Four developers. Four completely separate developers, each with their own unique vision and approach to this single project.
This isn’t, traditionally, a good sign. It’s usually a very bad sign. You only need to look at something like Duke Nukem Forever as an example of the kind of game you end up with following a protracted development that bounces between multiple studios.
So after 9 years in the oven and with a conveyer belt of chefs constantly fiddling with the temperature, was Dead Island 2 worth the wait?
Find out more by watching our PC review.

Honestly, I don't really get why reviews all approach this game in the context of "okay, but was it worth nine years of hype", rather than "okay, is this just a good game released now". Honestly. I just haven't been following the whole "when Dead Island 2" hype train and all. But it really does just sound like a straightforwardly good game, which fits nicely into the exact sort of first person shooter/brawler experience I was looking for. No live service nonsense like Dying Light. No launch brokenness. Just devs that made a game and sold it and you can buy the game and play it, and you get to murdalize a horde of gratuitously murderable things in entertaining ways. Wonderful.

      You're misreading curiosity as hype.
A simple sequel somehow took nine years to make, and got three separate devs (including some big names) kicked off the project. That's fascinating! Like, it just is. That it eventually shipped, seemingly in a good state, is also fascinating. It's impossible for a reviewer not to think about these things while playing, and it would be dishonest not to bring them up. It's nothing to do with hype.
I mean, it's possible that you don't agree it's interesting. But do you honestly think it's irrelevant? You yourself brought up Dying Light, and that's a different game altogether, by a different studio. But it made perfect sense to bring it up, because it provides relevant context. The opening minute of this video is no different, and tarring it with the 'hype train' brush seems unfair.

Man, you're reading way too much into this. I'm just saying people's expectations overall have been colored by viewing the game as something that's been in dev for nine years, not evaluating it fully on its own merits as a game that came out now after what seems to have been a relatively short, clean dev cycle (i.e., the current devs apparently just started more or less from scratch and delivered a complete, polished product). It's just a bias to account for.

I always appreciate Rock Paper Shotgun's reviews/discussions because you manage to always bring up something other news outlets ignore that make the game more compelling. Melee combat is the focus in DI2 vs. firearms, but then you said, the firearms are meant for the spongy bosses and not the cannon fodder zombies. This makes perfect sense, but most other reviews criticize the spongy boss enemies without acknowledging there is something that counters them. Whether this comes too late in the game is subjective, but bringing it up is an example of looking critically at the game as a whole instead of the general narrative (positive, negative) around the game. Keep up the great work!

Here is your essaye on Dead Island and the Iliad
The story of Dead Island 2, an action role-playing video game developed by Deep Silver Dambuster Studios, is often overlooked for its narrative complexity. However, upon closer examination, it becomes apparent that the game's story shares similarities with the epic poem "The Iliad" in terms of complexity. Both narratives involve multifaceted characters, intricate relationships, and deep exploration of human nature, making them comparable in their storytelling depth and complexity.
First and foremost, the characters in Dead Island 2 exhibit layers of complexity akin to those in The Iliad. Just as the Greek heroes in The Iliad possess strengths, flaws, and conflicting emotions, the characters in Dead Island 2 are not one-dimensional. Players encounter various survivors with diverse backgrounds, motivations, and personal struggles. Each character has their own unique story, and their interactions with one another are shaped by their individual personalities, desires, and conflicts. Just like the heroes in The Iliad, the characters in Dead Island 2 are not simply archetypal "good" or "bad" figures, but rather complex individuals with their own complexities and contradictions, making their storylines intriguing and thought-provoking.
Furthermore, the relationships between characters in Dead Island 2 are intricately woven into the story's narrative, similar to the complex web of relationships in The Iliad. In The Iliad, the alliances, rivalries, and conflicts among the Greek and Trojan warriors add depth and richness to the story. Similarly, in Dead Island 2, the relationships between the survivors, their struggles to trust and cooperate with one another, and their attempts to navigate the apocalyptic world together, are central to the game's plot. The evolving dynamics among the characters, their shifting loyalties, and the challenges they face in their interactions with each other, create a multifaceted tapestry of human relationships that mirror the complexities of the relationships depicted in The Iliad.
Moreover, both The Iliad and Dead Island 2 explore the depths of human nature in times of crisis. In The Iliad, the epic poem delves into the psychological and emotional aspects of war, depicting the heroes' struggles with rage, grief, and morality. Similarly, in Dead Island 2, the game portrays the survivors' psychological and emotional responses to the zombie apocalypse, such as fear, trauma, and desperation. The characters' moral choices, ethical dilemmas, and inner conflicts are thoughtfully explored, adding layers of complexity to the story. Both narratives raise profound questions about humanity's darker aspects, including the consequences of violence, the nature of heroism, and the moral complexities of survival.
In conclusion, the story of Dead Island 2 shares similarities with The Iliad in terms of complexity. The multifaceted characters, intricate relationships, and deep exploration of human nature in Dead Island 2 are reminiscent of the storytelling depth found in The Iliad. Both narratives offer rich and nuanced portrayals of complex characters, their relationships, and the complexities of human nature in times of crisis. Despite being a video game, Dead Island 2 delivers a compelling and thought-provoking narrative that is comparable to the complexity of the epic poem, The Iliad.

Nah idk man. 24 main story quest some of which are actually fast asf, and 33 side quests which are extremely repetitive tbh, finished 70% of the entire game in entirety and the main story and it’s just so mid man, and the lines and humor are often cringe and just not it. Insane reuse of the same weapons over and over even deep into the game, also I’m not joking when I say 70% of things are hidden behind a locked door or you have to power a section up every single time like I mean dozens of times man if your doing side quests. I mean tbh horrible ending just shot out horrible boss, you get no unique weapons from it. Left just sitting there like “okayyyyy uh” 3/10 or a 4/10 and that’s on its best day especially for this game being $75 after tax like nah cmon bro let’s be real here. Only positive is graphics in some areas are nice(not all the time I’ve had pop ins some errors on the Xbox one X) and props where props are due gore system and flesh system on the zombies is 10/10 only thing that pushed me through tbh.

Clearly an interpretation that won’t appeal to everyone. Wait for sale I reckon

Dead island riptide was the real dead island 2.
It was much better than the kinda shitty first game… not that it was amazing or anything.
Decent fun, I’d call it. Not a bad time
Neither hold a candle to Dying Light.
Hey, they made a Dying Light 2, didn’t they? How was that?
I think I’d check that out before this

Riptide was more like an overpriced expansion than a real game

Was it worth a 9-year wait? Nope.. From a game that was in production for so long, even if it switched from studio to studio, this game isn’t worth it’s price. At some point this game just looks low-budget.

No vehicles? 1st person only? I'll stick with State of Decay 2 or Days Gone when I'm in the mood for a zombie game.
