NYC Food Tour! What to EAT in NYC in 48 Hours!

  • On our first trip to New York City, there are certain foods that we just have to try! PIZZA, Jewish deli sandwiches, hot dogs (from a cart), bagels, and cheesecake! I know, I know… it’s gonna be tough eating all of this delicious food!
First up is the pizza! And for this, we went to Greenwich Village. The first stop was John’s of Bleecker Street where we could not order by the slice so were forced to eat a whole pie! I mean, someone’s gotta do it :) It was great! This was a brick oven pizza and we ordered their special, the Sasso Pizza. But just for fun, we added sliced meatballs to one side just to change it up from the delicious cheesy special. And then just a block away was Bleecker Street Pizza. We were pretty full but luckily could order just a slice here. We had the Nona Maria, which is their specialty. Oh. My. God… this was the best pizza I have ever had in my life!!! Seriously life-changing pizza here!
There are many Jewish deli’s in Manhattan but we had some inside input on where to go. First up was Sarge’s for the pastrami and corned beef on rye. This thing was piled so high we could barely fit it in our mouths!! And for a second try, we went to Junior’s for the brisket melt… which did we think was better??? While at Junior’s we had the New York Cheesecake, plain, no toppings, they are not needed! This was divine! I mean, I have had ‘New York Cheesecake’ a hundred times before, but never REAL New York Cheesecake if you know what I mean!
Needing a specific hotdog stand, Billy’s Hot Dogs at Central Park West and 93rd Street, we made the trek all the way to him… only to find he was not there. Luckily he was just one block over at a school street festival so we tracked him down and he gave us free hot dogs! Such a nice guy… and they were worth the walk!
Lastly, I needed a bagel. Nothing fancy, just a bagel. There are lots of bagel shops in the city but we were getting this on our last morning so couldn’t go too far. The nearest bagel shop to Times Square is in Rockefeller Center, which was cool to visit as well. Black Seed Bagels was a bit hard to find on a lower level, but we found it… and so did a crowd as it appears to be a popular spot. I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese… and I see what the hype is all about!

Alisa the next time you guys are in New York you MUST do the Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour! It’s a pizza lover’s dream come true. We go to Junior’s just for the cheesecake. Carmine’s has amazing Italian food but family style portions. Love the Halal Guys truck for quick eats. Chelsea Market’s Lobster Place is always on our must do list for a whole lobster meal with beer. NYC is a foodie’s PARADISE! 🤤

I spent most of my life in NYC from childbirth till age 49 when we moved to Florida and then to Seattle.
Watching you guys experience NYC pizza, deli and bagels brought back so many memories.
There's a jewish word "kvelling" it means to burst with pride and happiness. Every time you each took your first bite and the huge smile came
across your faces... the look of sheer bliss.... I sat here with a smile from ear to ear kvelling for your happiness of NYC food.
Remember, I was the one who said "If you don't have pizza and a bagel it's like you were never there" And you topped it with Deli.
Juniors is considered the best cheesecake in the world. Food Channel did a battle between Juniors and Cheesecake Factory
and Juniors smoked them ! ! ! This video and your previous NYC video brought joy to this old man and I can't thank you both enough.

Anything in NY that is made with dough, pizza crust, rolls….BAGELS is so delicious because of the water. Also, a brick oven pizza you usually need to order the whole pie, where as a traditional pizza oven pie is usually sold by the slice. 🍕 Only thing missing from your tour was a NY cannoli 😋

NEW YORKER and pizza snob here.
You made a good choice in John's. However if youwanted just a slice. Joe's is a block away and that is the classic NYC slice.
The char at John's is because it's a coal oven. Super high temperature. Rhe more brown crust of Bleeker is a standard gas oven about 3-400 degrees cooler.
The Nonna pizza you got is a style of pizza local to the area. It caught on in Long Island, NY. Nonna means grandmother. Grandma pizza is delicious. It's usually a square. But it's a thin square not a thick Sicilian square. Rhe sauce is a dense long cooked tomato sauce. Usually applies in rows and not on the the crust. My favorite place does a cracker thin crust with a rows of sauce and a rows of cheese.
In a coal oven pizza the sauce is not even cooked because it will cook on the pie in like 90 seconds.
My #1 tip if you are evaluating a slice before you buy it? Is the mozzarella caramilized? If it's white, they have no clue what they are doing. They are melting the mozz and not cooking it. Good pizza is gold, red and flakes of caramelized brown flecked on top.
Also if you ever sail out of Brooklyn again. Defontes sandwich shop makes ridiculously good classic italian heroes. 2 min car ride from the cruise terminal.
On Van Brunt street whixh the gentrified part of Red Hook, Red Hook Tavern has one of the burgers in America. Hometown barbeque is close to legit Texas barbecue.
Also watch on the Waterfront before you go. It's the bad old days of Red Hook and Brando is phenomenal in it

I recently made my own sourdough bagels and I've to to say it was the best bagel I've ever had. I like a little chewier bagel so I boiled the dough a little longer. These bagels reminded me of the New York bagels I've had in the past. There is something about a warm crispy on the outside and soft and somewhat chewy inside bagel with good whipped plain cream cheese that makes me smile.

If you are doing food tourism and making many stops .... split one item or don't be ashamed about not finishing food. You're paying for the experience.
Or travel in a group of possible.
If you're just eating normal.....pick a great place in an area you want to be in....Bleeker Street in greenwich village is a great location.
Also great NYC pizza is up there with anything, but do not assume any pizza place in Manhattan will give that experience.

NYC, including the 5 boroughs has by far the best food in the world! Long Island and Westchester County are incredible as well. The Pizza in Brooklyn is the best anywhere. Manhattan, second. NYC has food from everywhere in the world! The food is authentic because NewYorkers are tough critics and population is diverse. I cannot have Pizza anywhere else but NY. Its a shame the political climate, high taxes, and rising crime, is driving people away, but the food is definitely helping keeping us from moving down. south. Havent eaten in Manhattan in a few years (since I was in a NYC homocide investigation school in 2017) . We have to get to Juniors in Manhattan. Not a place you want to go before a cruise tho. We usually diet the week before going.

    That Mr. Greg is hilarious!
If a New Yorker calls out a Californian for not folding their pizza, well, the Californian will look them straight in the face and bite that slice without folding and say afterwards..."If I wanted a sandwich I'd have ordered a sandwich." hahaha And then there is me, though California born and bred I'll confound all of them by looking around at everyone straight in the eye...and eating the pizza crust end first. ("What is wrong with you?!" "Many things. Many, many things." Bwahahaha)

So, I was super excited to see a new video, until I realized this video was food clips taken out of your last New York video you just made, and reposted. I was disappointed, because I was excited to see another video so soon, and thinking I was going to see new content. I thought maybe I was losing it, until I went back and re-watched. I appreciate that some folks are really interested in food content only. That said, maybe post it that way... aka let your viewers know this is clips from the food content of the last video.
