I am a retired person, living of the SS income. If I go to live in Costa Rica, will I continue to receive the same benefits? Thank you for your videos, very helpful! 👍🏼
Many retired people here....we are NOT retired. I don't know what benefits you are talking about, but you might get more information by going to the US Embassy website at: cr.usembassy.gov/
The one thing that has kept me from making the leap to a pensionado visa is the Caja. I have Tricare Insurance for life that pays outside the USA, and my income is a VA disability and SSDI. Not even the IRS in the States can touch my blood money, and I'll be damned if I'm going to give 10% of it to a foreign government. Everything in me is screamin' for this move to CR, so IF this legislation (which strangely I've only heard of here) passes the crippled and heavily protested congress down there, The last objection I have to relocating will be gone.
Unfortunately...from my understanding and I am not an Attorney, but I believe EVERYONE who gets their Residency must then pay 10% of their DECLARED income for CAJA (health insurance). It is a small sacrifice to live in what feels like paradise and the rent or cost of living is so affordable.
I really don’t know the answer to that...but talking to a good attorney in Costa Rica could answer that question. I do KNOW people who declared a LOT (I don’t know why and they paid a lot) I know people who only declared a little....so that they would NOT have to pay 10% on everything. I am not saying to be dishonest...I am just giving the facts.
When I first came to Costa Rica you were not forced to join the Caja. I did join voluntarily and paid $38.00 a month, that was about 20 years ago. The country which is broke started forcing all foreign residents to join the Caja a few years ago. I pay about $85.00 a month now thru ARCR which has a group plan. I have never used the Caja, my Union pays most of my medical down here so long as I get the bill in English and Dollars, which at times can be a hassle. Most private doctors will tell you the Caja is only good for emergencies. That 10% is a lot of bunk, if you tell them what expenses you incur each month that 10% will gradually lessen.

Be careful when buying property in Costa Rica because the system encourages squatters. I have been fighting for my rights over my own home for almost a year and nobody will help.

Hey Rogaine, Not sure what you mean by Lame??? People import vehicles because it is very expensive to get a good vehicle in Costa Rica. @@rogaineablar5608 Costa Rica is a beautiful place...however, they do NOT make hardly anything.
@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica so do they care if I only declare the smaller of the two? Are there penalties for NOT declaring an income source?
I really don’t know the answer to that...but talking to a good attorney in Costa Rica could answer that question. I do KNOW people who declared a LOT (I don’t know why and they paid a lot) I know people who only declared a little....so that they would NOT have to pay 10% on everything. I am not saying to be dishonest...I am just giving the facts.
@@MB-em9hm You only declare one, so, yes, the smaller of the two. Our Caja payments are roughly 5% of our declared income. Age plays a factor.
That 10% is a lot of bunk, if you tell them what expenses you incur each month that 10% will gradually lessen.
has this law passed yet???
We haven't heard anything yet....the gov't wheels in Costa Rica move really slow.
Just bring your money’s cause rental a car for 1 month in Easter Holiday cost $2,500 US event if we have rent the car from November to March 23, 2021. Everything is expensive!
Thanks for your input. Where are you renting a car for a month?
@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica Well known company!
@@louisecyr4645 Thanks...where and who is this well-known company. I"d like to go check them out. I wonder if they are honest or if they are running a scam? I know renting a vehicle is expensive...depending on what you rent.

c.r. needs to make this as easy as panama for people to retire there....i am married to a tica she has dual citizenship but i would still need to jump through hoops; i find this crazy and unnecessary ...and the car stuff is just insane.it comes down to greed of government to screw over persons wanting to come and live there...bigger reason is most ticas do not pay taxes to feed the kitty and fat cat pensions...everywhere i go in c.r. the locals evade taxes like the plague but make loads of cash under the table...
Yes...there is a lot of truth in what you are saying and I agree. Costa Rica needs to make it easier and at the moment, they claim they are working on something...so let's hope something changes soon.
@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica Yes instead of enforcing income tax collection their answer is more value added taxes VAT and taxing bank transfers, taxes on services etc etc!,Costa Rica has become the most expensive place to live in Central America! I wouldn’t hold my breath on the new incentives to attract new residents to Costa Rica! There is also big opposition in the legislature on the new law.It is what it is and after 20 years here I accept the the Costa Rican Motto Dios Quire “It’s up to God” they are a very patient people for the most part.So with all its warts and beaurocrazy I still love living here just have the Manjana attitude and run on Tico Tlme!
@@richardyoung1890 YES...you are correct. We have the same thinking....although we run into problems....for US, the Pros far outweigh the Cons every single day. So, we learn to live with the things we think MAKES NO SENSE...but since we are only guest in this country, we learn to live with it.
Be careful when buying property in Costa Rica because the system encourages squatters. I have been fighting for my rights over my own home for almost a year and nobody will help.
Thank for your input...
All this complexity is overwhelming, but I'm sure our taxes and laws are just as confusing to immigrants to the US. Life shouldn't be this complicated. Every bureaucracy ends up collapsing under its own weight. Feels like it's time to rethink these things.
I think CR makes it WAY more difficult than it needs to be for Foreigners. But, the Pros still outweigh the cons every single day for us.
Lame; who would import a vehicle?
Hey Rogaine, Not sure what you mean by Lame??? People import vehicles because it is very expensive to get a good vehicle in Costa Rica. So, the people that can afford to import a vehicle are smart to do so...Even the Government realizes this is important and that is why the Proposed bill to help Gringos save thousands of dollars when they import a vehicle.
@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica OK good to know. Most people I've known in the Diplomatic Corp buy a vehicle when they arrive locally because it's easier. Most buy from departing diplomats.
@@rogaineablar5608 Costa Rica is a beautiful place...however, they do NOT make hardly anything. They import almost everything the stuff they import is in MOST cases the cheapest quality they can buy....simply because the people in this 3rd world country are too poor to buy quality. So, if you buy anything in Costa Rica...it does NOT last long. So..it is best to buy anything as far as computers, high tech gadgets, vehicles or anything you want quality...buy it and ship it in.
@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica ..Just make sure that if you import a vehicle there are parts (In country) for said vehicle.
Note to self. Buy a car in Costa Rica.
YES....or buy a motorcycle. It's a cheap alternative if you are able and not worried about driving a bike.
Florida law? Run run as far as you can from this propaganda
