@@gruhnd9711 bruh, half flips are super important, you should learn it, it took me only 1 hour to master half flips while i was in plat 3 and it helped me A LOT to get to where i am d3 rn, again, its not about mechanics, its about rotations, ive been deranking from champs just because of my rotations, set aside 10 minutes and go over 2 or 3 replays of ur past games. look at ur car from ur tm8s prespective. you are probably double commiting, not rotating back post etc. work on these few things. i hope you get out of g2!
The only mechanics I would recommend everyone learn (to a certain level of course, depending on their rank), is power shots and accuracy. That'll help you get far further than air dribbles and ceiling shots
Accuracy and good defense can litteraly get you to champ. Until you get to higher ranks ppl double and triple commit so often if you can put the ball on target from a distance. Your scoring 9 times outta 10.
@@Dygit Dribbles are really hit and miss on a player to player average, I think ball control and the ability to recover overpower dribbling, just because it doesn't require as much effort and it's still almost as effective
@@moldy_burrito_ I'm high SSL and can't flip reset, musty, breezi. Can confirm that accuracy is very important, but speed + field awareness (when you're beat or can control or even just tap around someone) is just as important
Fun fact : when people train their mechanics they train the ones that are kind of useless, they should focus more on powershots, backboard reads, dribbles and fast aerials.
Yh i got so much better when i stopped trying ti mmo hit the ball out of the air and started staying grounded and on walls , and keeping the ball near me
calm down. we're not all trying to become pro. you "should" do whatever the fk you want because it's your own game. Joreuz said in the interview with Thanovic that he was practicing ceiling shots in ranked as a platinum.
@@redfox9726 and you would be enjoying the game more in a lower rank being able to score mechanical plays if you stopped caring what these hardstuck GC1s for 5 years were telling you to do.
@@redfox9726 i was alrweady doing that in silver. a lot of us got to platinum BY getting good at powershots, fast aerials etc. Then we start learning flip resets etc. And before you reply, keep in mind im now a champ 2 in 3s and 2s. I'm just speaking from my memory when i was platinum. I already did learn the BASIC stuff and it was still ahrd to get P1 that way
Im GC 2, I don’t speed flip, I probably only air dribble once a game, and maybe hit a flip reset on a weekly basis. I’m not incapable of doing these, I just realize there are better options at certain times during the game.
@@dreamsdicc1817 Dribbling on the ground is good though, provided you know when to actually do it. Air dribbling is on the other hand is incredibly wasteful for boost and as a rule of thumb, shouldn't be attempted unless you are your teams player furthest upfield, you can beat at least one player and you already have a full tank of boost. Don't be that guy who goes for an air dribble from the back when a pass out was available as that not only leads to an open back line but confusion as well as team mates misinterpret that air dribble as a pass initially or scramble to fill the hole you've just left behind. GC1 (multiple playlists)
@@nekroneko ya sorry i meant air dribbling lol. Ground dribbling is fine. But yeah passing off the wall or ground is a lot better than going for an air dribble when your teammate is already mid field waiting for a pass. Half the time a double commit happens and when there isnt, it doesnt even go in a half the time
@@nekroneko at least for me, i feel like i lack accuracy, accurate power shots, and sometimes not knowing to commit. Ik im good at not following behind a teammate and missing a passing play. I usually trust people so i dont double commit. I usually set myself up for someone to pass it to me. Any suggestions on getting higher up
I constantly try to explain this to my friends. I am 1 handed and there are several things I just can't do but my decision making allows me to play at high champ2-3 np. What sucks is watching goals go in when I'm in position 1 do to bad decisions.
In case you’ve never seen him. There’s a very high level SSL who is beating pros a lot who only plays with one hand and his chin. And he also is very highly mechanical. Speed flips, flip resets etc. Ashlxxy idk how to spell but that’s him look him up
@cordudemax yes know whobhe is. Not really 1 handed. His 1 good hand holds controller normal so he is able to use a joystick normally. Then cheek for buttons and other arm for triggers. I am using 5 fingers only hand spread out like a palm print. Meaning I can't hold a joystick normal and move it multiple direction. I have to flick it with each directional movement. Extremely hard to do certain things
I started last year and what i've learned is that all the rank up "shortcuts" come from getting better at positioning. There is so much stuff you can implement after a few games and see results immediately like back post rotation, using pads over big boost (you save/score more), don't overcommitting as last man (you get less scored on), trusting in mates (stops double comitting) and more. The only "Shortcuts" you can get for Mechanics is that you learn it the right way from the beginning, by watching a good video about it and doing it step by step. It still needs a lot of time to be able to do it consistently, especially in games. Really good Video, thanks Wayton.
Yh i noticed that almost every single time that i didn't have faith in my teammate or they didn't have faith in me , and it's near the net , they score, when if we were positioned as support , wd coulda saved it , so i try not to lose patience when people have the ball stuck doing nothing. Also noticed that pressuring the ball even if you won't get to it first is better than letting your opponent have space .
@@redfox9726 Yeah there are a lot of small examples of common situations like that were you can learn an easy solution to deal with it. Conceding a goal because your teammate didn't save the ball sucks, but if you positioned yourself to follow up after his save, you did the right play and that matters way more in the long run because you can't control what your teammates do. But you can try to improve and make the correct play. That's why focusing too much on your rank and just winning can make you tilt easily, because your success depends on factors you can't control (mates).
This is the single greatest rocket league video on RUclips. It’s light years ahead of all the other issues with this game. Everyone instantly writes you off when you say “the biggest reason I’m not X rank is because of teammates.” The thing is, it the single greatest fact for some of us. Ive only hit Champ in both 2s and 3s. And I don’t pretend that I’m perfect every match. I miss. Challenge when I shouldn’t, etc. I know my weaknesses. I try to consciously focus on them during my play. But when I’m at Champ 1 and I’m seeing teammates less than two cars apart (in the opponents end) nearly every single attack, I’m 100% right to blame them. When I go up for an aerial and my teammate is two seconds behind me, in the air as I’m coming down (and the opponents counter score), I can blame them. When my teammate in 2s literally goes for a ceiling shot or flip reset every time (and never even making contact), without a thought to pass, I can blame them. Anyway, you get the point. Everyone wants to be fancy. Everyone wants those clips. But you can argue (and you’ve proven) that higher level mechanics are literally irrelevant. But. It’s not going to change. This problem is actually getting worse. And for some personal anecdotal evidence: I used to play 6-mans with a crew of all Champ 2s and up (mostly Champ 3s) and consistently lead in saves and assists. And this was when I was a Diamond 1. I don’t know who needs to hear it. But stop chasing. Pay attention to where your teammates are. And pass the ball. We that deserve to be Champ 3 and up would really appreciate it. 🤗
That's actually a super impactful video for me. I'm C2 in 2s and 3s and still struggle with mechanics. I tought I was super late and got "lucky" to get there just by my positioning. Im now focussing on mechanics of course, but at least I know I'm at the right time to do it.
This was very well-made. Thank you for doing this. The number of players I get asking for help on mechanics when they can barely handle moving towards pads or read the structure of the opponent's positioning is far too many.
YES!!! I'm so glad you've made this video. I lost a match yesterday where my teammate was complaining that it was a 1v2 and blaming my mechanics and when I tried to tell him that he was repeatedly cutting me off in rotations he got mad and started own goaling, so I'm really glad you've put this out there. Equally the fact that you got to C1 with very limited mechanics shows me that I still have a ways to go with my own rotation and positioning skills as well. This is honestly one of the best videos I've seen in a while so props to you!
I mean. I have been practising airdribbles and celing shots since I was gold or something like that, because it's fun. When I hit diamond I startded training flip resets. Now I am champ and still just freestyling and playning around in freeplay most of the time when I play. Training air dribble in low ranks are not nessesearly wrong, it just depends on what you want with the game
ikr, what got me into rocket league to begin with was watching players just carry the ball in the air across the field. I probably wouldnt have played the game as much as i have if I didnt want to be able to do that
I don't think it's wrong to practice mechanics but there are definitely players out there that hold back their gameplay by exclusively focusing on mechanics
@@paullucas7504 exactly, I feel like that’s why I became more of a freestyler type player lol. Mechanics make the game fun for me. Otherwise just driving a ball into a net 10,000 times gets old really quick
There is 1 mechanic which is kinda positioning and that is why it hase a huuuge impact on the game - having the knowledge for what is precisely the timing to the ball and how do you position your car in order to make the play you want with the ball. Even if you have bad mechanics and bad precision with imputs, you have to know precisely, depending on how exactly is the ball moving and in what situation, what is the position of your car to the ball and it's speed and in which moment do you need to make what adjustment, in order for the ball to go where you want it to. Even if I had perfect control of my car and I could be infinitely precise with my movements, if I didn't know where exactly do I need to put myself in order to make the play, no mechanic will help me. Before you execute it, you need to know how and knowing how will compensate a lot the lack of precision. And I argue that, because when we refer to positioning, we mean our position on the field according to players and the ball, this thing here is not positioning, or actually it is a small scale positioning. A completely different thing that should be treated separately.
You are correct, this is the most "basic" mechanic, but you can improve at it just by playing the game noramlly without really focussing on it unlike the mechanics presented in the video where you have to put some time in freeplay so you can master them
Your experience playing with the piano sounds like me playing ranked. I'm pretty sure my mechanics are better than yours on the piano and your positioning is much better than mine, but I'm also always the player with the worst mechanics in my diamond 2/3 lobbies. As a result, I regularly get team mates calling me out for being bad at the game and thinking I've been boosted to my rank. Coincidentally, I also said higher than the coach average for when to start learning every single mechanic.
I just got my champion rewards today without being able to ceiling shot, air dribble, flick consistently, or hit a double tap. My positioning, game sense, and speed/boost management carried me all the way to diamond 3, and finding a teammate with just slightly better mechanics than me that rotated properly got me 10 wins at champ rank. I only have 300 hours in the game, you don’t even need experience to make it work. Positioning is key
Sounds like an experiment me and a friend were doing. We're both GC in 2s and made a new account where we wouldnt bind boost nor jump. So we straight up could just drive forward or backward. Thats it. No powershots, no dashes, not even a slight jump to block a ball that comes slightly off ground. Managed to get to Gold 3 in 2s and Plat 1 in hoops. We havent tried rumble yet but I bet diamond could be possible
@@dreamsdicc1817 you can defend much better in rumble than you think. Hoops was actually the hardest as of now, since it almost always requieres you to jump to get the ball somewhat high enough to go in
For the speedflip: it starts to get famous and used in diamond and i often see champ player that dont even flip on kickoff. Its frustrating. I think Kickoff is slightly underrated while aerial mechanics are overrated
One big thing about a speedflip though: it's easily countered if you read it, and most people make it extremely easy to read. I've noticed that people don't tend to adapt their kickoff much in my rank (D3) and I've developed a kickoff (probably not the first to come up with it) that completely destroys a speed kickoff quite consistently. Most of the time, they'll keep doing it and get even 50s or completely dunked at kickoff. The only issue is I have to see it coming, because otherwise my kickoff really isn't all that good and I risk losing it. I read a speed kickoff by watching the nameplate of my opponent. If it does some weird curly crap, I know they speedflipped (or attempted to do so).
@@MinecraftTestSquad yeah, you can do the speedflip as well with precise aimed flips like flipping in the direction the ball is going and afterwards you are closer to the ball than the opponent. Or the safest variant to just do a front flip and be as goalside as possible. The way when your opponent tries to hit it around you is very easy to counter, but of course you need a faster kickoff than a kickoff the speedflip beats. You can't just drive straight at it.
@@MinecraftTestSquad A speedflip kickoff should land your car at a point where if you break, you don't hit the ball, so if you're delaying it, then they just can't read it. Speed flip is undeniably the best way to kickoff in the game
Hey! Great video and very informative. I believe in rotation way more than mechanics, but rotations depend so much on how good you are at reading the ball, your teammate's position, and the other teams skill and consistency. It's not exactly easy to fix just by being aware that it's there.
Thanks! I am glad a big content creator finally says this... i am SSL and just now (where i am trying to getting into tourneys and Ranking into 6mans B+) i am thinking about maybe switching from normal airroll to directional airroll and trying to improve some mechanics bc so far i simply didnt need it at all :D
I’m GC 3 and I made the switch to directional air roll about 6 months ago and now it’s second nature. Took a lot of rings grinding but it’s certainly helped my speed and brought me up from 1600’s to 1700’s, I recommend grinding it out bro it’s pretty worth.
As an SSL who converted to Air Roll Left + Air Roll recently, it does help a lot with solo plays... that being said it also creates bad habits so you just have to learn when to use it and when not to. I'd say undoubtedly add it into your control list
This is why I'm so happy I found the series "Getting SSL without mechanics" although it's 1v1s and 2v2s. It's helped me understand I'm doing a lot of things in game that is just straight up unnecessary and probably doesn't help anyone. I've stopped trying so hard mechanically and just focused on my decision-making and teammates and went from D2 to C1 in a day lol I'm now hardstuck C1d2 but I still have a lot to learn so I'm not worried about it. My goal for this season was Champ and now that I've reached it, I'm going to keep slowly learning and improving. Next season my goal is Grand Champ. Good luck to everyone making that climb.
Same bro I was plat 3 and now im champ 2 with high plat maybe low diamond mechanics. Learning rotating and positioning is really important and u can get really high. Im sure everyone reading this will get to where they want to be 👍
@@thecinedrone Most aerials people go for below champ are usually pointless, meaning the touches are bad or they don't have good enough mechanics to execute what they're trying to do. Flip Resets, complicated flicks, speed flipping, fast aerials, I could go on. Timing when you hit the ball, decision-making, teammate awareness, positioning, rotations. These matter the most when trying to improve. Most people try to improve the wrong things whenever they're training and usually forget the basics. If you're below GC, chances are your fundamentals are not mastered. Not saying mechanics don't help or aren't good. But trying to learn mechanical skills is like adding extra weight to your improvement. It becomes slower and will feel like you're not progressing really.
Forget that next season goal. After Champ, your rank improvement slows down massively. Not saying YOUR improvement slows down, but you just need to improve more to rank up. Aim for C2 next season and C3 the season after.
@@BrawlLegendLink If I keep playing and training every day. I'll most likely be C3 by the end of this season. Over the past two weeks I worked on adding mechanics back into my gameplay and I'm even better now. If i figure out what my problems are and I know what needs to be done in order to solve them, it will be easy to get GC next season. Of course, I still have a lot of things to learn mechanically, and I'm still very inconsistent with what I can do. BUT, I started playing this game 11 months ago and I'm Champ. I was in Diamond for HALF of my time playing Rocket League because I was spending my time inefficiently. We're good now. I got this.
I agree with you 100 %. I'm Champ 1 and the only thing i can do consistently are basic powershots and basic aerials(without air roll). I cant do dribbling, air dribbling, fast aerials etc. And it is kinda funny if i beat people in ranked champ without any mechanics just with position and good pass plays. Specially if people hate on me and say you don't have any mechanics and i answer with yeah you just got beaten by a person without any mechanics. lol
Hey Wayton, you are absolutely right about positioning. Once I started practicing my positions. The shots where easier to read and hit. I went from Silver to Gold. Thank you very much man.
As a GC2 I learned most of my mechanics in low diamond and just kept practicing them. I have really good mechanics but for a very long time my positioning and game sense held me back. I'm glad I worked hard on my mechanics because it's a super nice skill to have and some of the shots u hit are amazing but it does take a bit longer to push those ranks. So basically if ranking up is your goal work on gamesense but don't feel any shame for trying to learn advanced mechanics early. But it does take time, don't ask people to help you just grind it out and keep practicing. Give it time.
I never bothered to grind mechanics since I don't play the game a lot. My friends said I should be better at positioning, and I listened to them. They told me my mistakes, how I should rotate etc. Soon after, we were winning most of our matches by purely playing solid positioning. Managed to reach Champ 3 and then stopped playing again. Wayton's video's are making me reconsider whether or not I should grind out mechanics and play RL again🤔
@@danilio8 Firstly, well done in reaching C3. Although I respect Mr Pilkin's opinion and he makes some very compelling points, mechanics are still important for progressing to the higher GC and SSL ranks. If you are happy with where you are in your progression and you don't care about your rank, then all the more power to you. However if you want to progress higher, you need to start focusing on mechanics. At the higher ranks everyone is pretty good at decision making already. That's simply because that's the easiest thing to get better at and they have all put in lots of hours. Decision making alone won't help you there because you will be way too easy to read, and you will get outplayed by more mechanical players. And lastly, you should most definitely play RL again!
Every sport I've coached, hockey, soccer, baseball... I've had my players focus on position and being a team player. We work on skills during practices, but my focus - for long term success - is to teach position, thinking ahead, and cooperating with the rest of the team. It's always worked well. Except when you get a naturally talented player who can score at will - or outplay anyone. BTW, it's no fun to play with these people. (Back to RL) When I'm matched with a player who is gifted in their mechanics and can outplay the other team's ability to make saves, I'm left with three options: a) compete with my teammate for the MVP position, b) continue to be a good teammate and pick up the defensive roles (even the ones that don't make points), c) leave the game. Either way, it's really no fun playing with a teammate who is so focused on their own mechanics and goals that they ignore their teammates. IOW, I agree with @Wayton
Here’s an scene. I’m a d2 in 2s and go into p2 1s, as i play against my opponent I see he’s way more mechanical than me. I ask “what’s your peak rank” and they say c. A moment off realisation hit me i am going to lose. I knew he was gonna beat me to every aerial so i play smart. I gain 2 goals… he gains 3 back… I gain another 3…. 3 2 1! The game ends 5-3 and positioning prevails!
Im C3. I've hit 2 ceiling shots in my 2k hours of playing. 0 flip resets 0 musty flicks can't speed flip only hit a handful of double taps and can't air dribble to save my life Work on adapting to and playing around your team mate's playstyle. That's all you need.
there is one very useful mechanic that even d3 players often dont use: fast aerial or when youre in net simply double jump. that saved me probably one goal every game and is extremely useful when youre plat to diamond
@@Bweyg there are a lot of videos of it. you just need to use your second jump while boosting up for the aerial. just do a few shots during your warmup and it will become a habit in a few days
Love the video Wayton. Dont wanna promote another youtuber, but Flakes has an extremely good series, where he tries to get SSL without mechanics. That video gives an insane perspective of how you really should play the game
I feel like he talked about this in the video during why he chose a keyboard to play. Flakes is nuts and the amount of precision he has is not something you can mimic from the video. It is without mechanics but still playing mechanically perfectly with the things he does use like his dribbles. Just looking at the gameplay, movement and the perfect touches you can see he is a much higher rank. I agree it does showcase that mechanics are not everything but if you never aerial like he does in the series you will get in trouble, because the viewers simply aren't Flakes. Sorry for the long reply, didn't know how to explain in concisely xd
@@Rainbowstunting i get what your saying. But every plat or c1 player could receive a lot of knowledge from flakes series. Im not saying they have to perfectly play like him, because thats not optimal for beginners (as you say) either is it fun.
Love the vid. I suck at mechanics but I am very good positionally. Eventually though I think polishing basic mechanics help you rank up but I went from Plat to champ in a month by polishing my basic mechanics. Love the vids tho keep it up!!
Yeah but even the mechanics people choose to polish are often the less useful ones. Things like power shots, simple but effective aerials, car control, ball control... those are all like alien language to people who talk about "mechanics".
Yea things like ground dribbles. Power shots. Just hitting the ball in the air. Nothing fancy. Maybe even pinches are used alot in my games so I polished those and it helps alot!
You imply all Rocket League skills fall either in the mechanics side of things or the positional side, but I would argue you're missing a category of skills and it's also incredibly underrated. I would categorize RL skills under 1) mechanics 2) decision making and 3) reads. Reads (of your team mates, opponents, and the ball) give you the information to work with, decision making is the process that turns this information into a plan and mechanics is what you use to execute that plan. If you can't read the play accurately and quickly, all the decision making in the world isn't going to help you the tiniest bit, because your plan will be based on incorrect assumptions about where the game is going. Positional tricks like back post rotations are a way to mitigate poor reads because they let you make plans that are mostly go in situations that are easy to identify. Generally, rotating back post is going to be a good idea in c1 or lower game and your ability to read the play is unlikely to be good enough that you should do something different based on your assessment of the situation. Typing it out like this I guess I realize that things like posturing for your team mates and faking are a bit weird. They mostly fall under decision making but the they rely heavily on your knowledge of reads. Not only do you need to be good at reads, you need to be consciously aware of it and know how you can influence the reads of other players on the field. You also need to know about their decision making because you also need to know how those reads will affect their decision making.
He was just using the wrong words. He meant to say that all Rocket League skill falls under muscles and brains. Muscles of course is mechanics, muscle memory and whatnot. Brains of course being reads and positioning and whatnot.
This is really true; a hard and fast rotational rule won't be much good if you just can't really see what's going on in the game. I've always thought that 95% of this game is about perception. And when you perceive/read things well, that ALSO helps immensely with your mechanics. You can't air dribble if you can't perceive exactly what your car position relative to the spot on the ball you touch and the angle of the camera will do to its trajectory.
Great video! I'm a rocket league OG (started playing August of 2015) and fully agree with this video. My mechanics are actually well under my rank but I get by pretty easily by knowing how to defend those things that people tend to know how to do at my level, keeping track of where everyone else is on the field, and being solid on all the fundamentals. IMO people practice newer tricks too much compared to trying to be consistent. It's pretty funny to me when someone hits a ceiling shot flip reset against me, then we win when they whiff a couple defensive backboard reads or botch a few clears.
"Mechanics don't matter" TurboPulsa probably: "EXACTLY. I've been telling people this for years, screw mechanics, screw strategy, scuffed goals are the only way!"
im glad i found stuff like this, ive been doing backpost rotation abit and have found defending so much easier, sometimes knowing a certain mechanic would've actually helped, but this vid is correct
Hey Wayton! Actually i think i have a bit different look at the case. For me grinding mechanics in lower ranks can be good ONLY if u don't want to rank up. For example i was płat 2 last season and most of the time i was going for freestyle kind of shots mainly because its just fun to at least try scoring them. I don"t want to flex or something like that but because of it (mechanics) people think i m higher ranked than i am in reality . Tip for every single plat- player. For me if u re person which doesnt get rl serious enjoy, u can do what u want. But if u wanna be more conpetetive / better at the game /higher ranked just shut up watch, learn and use what you have lerned. (if u watched how to do triple reset in Gold / whatever i m gonna find you and kick you)
Yeah if you don't actually care about getting better or ranking up, you can disregard this video entirely lol. I made this video with the context that those watching are people who want to rank up. I am not a freestyler at all but I know that freestyling is not at all about winning matches. If you're a freestyler, keep doing your thing 👍
Hey wayton. Can I 1v1 you sometime? I just want to see what my skill level is so far. I'm d2 and NO I don't think I "bElOnG In GrAnD cHaMp bEcAuSe oF tEaMaTeS" like most plats XD.
When I was a plat 1 player I always thought that I needed to work on mechanics and the first one I started practicing is power shots and yes it did help me get to plat 2 I still sucked and then once I found a video all about positioning and rotations, that all changed and then I became diamond 2 in 2s and diamond 1 in 3s, I was actually impressed at how good it feels to make a play off of simple rotations and constant pressure you can apply in 3s and I won my first tournament that season too! Waytons video on rotations and positioning is definitely a video you should watch if you haven't
I already knew that I needed to work on my positioning and rotations because I’m self aware that those are my severe weak points, but dang have you convinced me even more that I need to work on that even more than I had thought. Appreciate the vid and the hard work you put in. I’m currently D3/champ 1, my goal for this season is to get to champ 2 (in any playlist). Wasn’t sure exactly how that was gonna happen, but I think it’s definitely achievable if I work hard on my positioning from now on. Thanks man, appreciate the advice and insight.
you shoud learn speed flips around plat. i just reached ssl last season, and the speed flip is such a simple mechanic you can learn in a couple hours and speed up your play immensely.
Thank you so much Wayton for this video! I have been stuck in plat, and I knew it was because I was going for way too advanced mechanics in my rank. I then focused more on rotations because me and my team (I play 2’s, so my teammate) were double committing a lot. When we focused more on rotations, that completely changed the game. I went 10-0 while focusing on rotations. So thank you!
I did a similar experiment a few months ago. I am a controller player so I made a new keyboard only account and made it to c3 in 2 days with no mechanics. I was only gc1 on my main and I was surprised how little mechanics I needed to get near my rank.
I always thought i had learnt different mechanic too late Now wayton showed me I'm right (im GC1 and still struggles in ceiling shots and speedfilps, let alone filp resets)
im gc1 and simple air dribbles are a struggle even in freeplay speedflips are great though. More speed with less boost, and better flips for better 50/50s and kickoffs
Great vid, I learned some stuff for sure. I'm always pressing my teammates about rotations, pressure, and positioning because while I have a few mechanics this is the best way of winning games.
wayton is 100% right in this video, i was stuck in plat 3 for 2 seasons. So i started focusing more on rotations and positioning instead of mechanics and now im on Champ 1 for the first time ever! :D
I love how well you put your videos together. They helped me hit champ 2 from gold In 3 weeks of pure grinding but this is before ssl was a thing. I stopped playing and I'm trying to get back into the game and still find your vids amazing. I'm still placing champ 1 just struggle to get my game sense back and some mechanics that I used to find easy I know mechanics aren't the focus but It's what makes the game fun for me :) I rambled but just wanted to say thank you and I love the videos Edit: I know gold to champ 2 in 3 weeks sounds bs. But I was a gold/plat freestyling - I found a 2s partner while playing 1s. took 2s a bit more serious. So I had high level mechanics which I relied on too much and decent enough game sense. Might sound like my partner carried me but I could hold my own solo quing into champ. I know no-one asked but meh I like to ramble in comment sections lol
the thing about doing the mechanical wizardry when its actually consistent is it gives an imeadiate push instant pressure for the opponent and your team can relax. thats by far the biggest advantage of higher level mechanics vs positioning but you need good positioning to reliably get the setups needed. for example up at gc hoops a straight up powershot is not what gives you a goal, it will get defended as long as there is a defender. but a pop up air dribble with high level of control can do so much more. dont sleep on mechanics, but also dont force learn them too quickly
yeah, this will really help me. a couple days ago, i was put into a match against people with amazing mechanics. (i have almost no mechanical abilities or rotation abilities, but i was in low diamond one.) i lost, and i thought in order to get better, i should improve my mechanical abilities, only to find myself de-ranking to mid/low plat after watching one billion vids on how to do mechanical stuff. i hope to be able to rank up after learning more about positioning. thanks!
This video truly is an eye opener, although I know that in my case Rocket League is not about ranking up. I try to have as much fun as possible and there is nothing more exciting than pulling off a mechanic you've been trying to learn for days. (a bit salty seeing you reach c1 on a keyboard when I finally hit gc after 600 hours or so)
I began thinking about rotations and positioning nearly 2 years when I watched a Sunless video about it. Rotations and positioning really DO matter, and it works wonderfully as long as the whole team knows how to rotate and where to be positioned on the field. That actually got me to rank up more quickly and got more wins. And like Wayton said. Sure, your mechanics may be bad, but knowing positioning and rotations is VERY effective and will help you rank up faster. It honestly works wonders! I'm glad you made this video Wayton. A LOT of people really need to understand that it's not all about mechanics👍🏻
I had a video idea, where you could train people to have good replay analysis, and then have them 1v1 kind of like how you tricked JG with SSL’s. I was hoping I could be in it too.
the crux of this video is that positioning is important. You should make an in depth tutorial on all aspects of positioning (or maybe a series of 5 min vids on each topic e.g. back post, last man, backboard etc.)
The only one that i didnt agree with was the speed flips, i think its not that hard and learning it wouldnt take that long, i already learned it but its because i was getting beat to the ball a lot of my games, (and i thought it would be cool to learn)
Yes, it's amazing what positioning does. I lost a whole bunch of placements in 3s this season (bcuz I didn't care that much) and got ranked like d2 when im actually around c2. Now, I am guilty of having good mechanics and lackluster game sense, but it was amazing to see the difference between the stupidness levels of d3's and what im used to in champ. The biggest thing I noticed: going for the ball no matter what (which of course gives it straight to the other team). I often found that I was playing closer to a rumble rotation strat than 3v3 so that I could actually keep the ball out of our net. Managed to get a pretty good win streak but there were some extremely close calls when it came to losing (because my teammates didn't have good game sense). All that to say, you hit it spot on
This was motivating. I'm in a slump atm I had so many long very bad playing sessions where my mechanics and game sense were so bad that I haven't picked up rocket league in almost 2 weeks, that's coming from an everyday player. Im high diamond breaking into champ and I felt I needed to work on my mechanics to get better and these next level mechanics just aren't clicking for me. I've been practicing air roll for the last 10 months and I can not get it down. I felt I peaked and was kinda done. Maybe I'll pick it up again. Thanks for this video.
I do think it is important to note that training mechanics is much more enjoyable for a lot of people! People like to play the games in different ways and having mechanics and going for cool shots even in ranked is a fun way to play the game and helps keep people, including myself, motivated in the game! That being said, I do agree that positioning/gamesense > mechanics in terms of ranking up! Great Video!
Hey, and props to Keeps recently. They've sponsored at least one video from like 40 of the people on youtube I watch, so it seems like they're making the rounds for sponsoring YT content creators big and small
I'm in low champ. I spent the last 3 months straight learning flip reset and double flip reset and i have them down pretty easy and was pushing for the triple flip reset, + many other mechanics. I did not play any comp at all, but competed in champ tournaments nearly every day and was unable to win a single one. That whole damn time. I was getting so frustrated because I can do all these shots a lot of people my rank can't, but I had deteriorated so badly in in-game skill in basically every way and it just got worse and worse. So, recently, i gave up mechanic training entirely and swapped every second of my rocket league time to purely focusing on shot accuracy, power, speed and competitive matches to just re-learn and re-experience myself. I won a champ tourney 3 days ago after less than 2 weeks. Do your fundamentals people, if ranking up or winning games is your objective. Although these were not my objective while i was having fun training mechanics (it's ridiculously addictive to me), i did not have a clue as to just how bad it was making me at the actual game. I might have ranked up to GC if i had spent the last 3 months doing this instead of fancy shots no one lets me set up in-game anyway.
As a positioning focussed player I can definitely agree with that. I dont have the mechanical skills yet, but after watching a lot of your vids and getting knowledge, I actually ranked up from plat 3 to diamond 2. Most of my friends or mecahnical players and its always embarassing when they make stupid decisions like rushing to the opponent goal whilst no one is defending in the back. Great video, keep up the good work.
If you were to learn anything early, learn double taps. Double taps are OP all the way through to Grand Champ. They are great to practice because you learn to read the ball off the wall and that will help you in so many ways.
There also a difference when once you learn something and you can do it consistently, this falls under the level of consistency of the group. Where I think a big issue is when you can do all the mechanics but use them to often and don’t rely on teammates at all and it kind of gets us back to the ball chasing days of rocket league.
I've been waiting for a good video talking about Plat brain and positioning. Watching back post and for the high transition clear got me from gold 3 to d3 in a season. What people don't realize is that they have to do all of this stuff situationally and learning one trick or two that they beat to death over learning how to create better opportunities for themselves through positioning is what's holding a lot of people back. I get asked all the time in games how I do things and my response is usually rotation and freeplay practice. I'm so glad someone made a video talking about it bc I'm tired of explaining it in a text chat so now I can just let em know Wayton's got them covered. Thanks Wayton you're the goat! ♥️
Glad I watched videos like these when i started getting into rocket league. I have a little over 80 hours and I hit diamond just from watching videos like these. They really help a ton! Thank you for videos like these.
I'm diamond 1 and barely know how to flip reset, ceiling shot and occasionally air dribble so trust me, complex mechanics don't matter. Also, in season 4 I went from gold 3 to diamond with fixing my back post rotations only so Wayton definitely has a point.
I learned most of the mechanics earlier, and now I'm a 1/2 champion who knows pretty much everything; now my focus is to improve in positioning and my notion of game more and more
Thank you so much for this video. Being a C1 player with ZERO advanced mechanics (I rarely even attempt air dribbles), this one really speaks to me. Especially the line about players usually not even being aware of how bad their positioning is. I'll have teammates who hit 1 in 20 mechanical moves, both go flopping up in the air to the other end of the field, accomplish nothing... then blame me while I'm left defending a 1v2 or 1v3. Cherry on top if it's a party of two who are going to go agree with each other in their echo chamber, haha. I'm just completely fascinated by the amount of mental gymnastics players go through to deflect any responsibility from themselves.
I kind of agree with you there. You can do without high end mechanics, but if you can't aerial at all, if you can't read wall play, if you can't do basic car control on the ground you won't get far. Positioning will do nothing if you whiff every ball you go for. So BASIC mechanics are really important and so is positioning.
Glad a video came out about this, I'm floating around champ 3 and gc. I cannot air dribble well, can't flip reset at all. The only thing I can do constantly is dribble and hit ball with car.
Best habit I ever got in to was saving match replays. Not just of losses but of DEVASTATING losses, leave it a day or two then come back to it. Rewatch from my POV but after a goal rewind and compare my POV with my team mates as well as the opponents. At a guess I’d say that 5% of the goals conceded were due to mechanics/mis pressing a button (be honest, we’ve all backflipped when we didn’t want to) the vast majority were rotational mistakes OR trepidation, I’ve found you can tell by how people control their car if they’re anxious in a certain position or hesitate and when you’ve conceded a goal everything just goes out the window. Like that quote. Everybody has a fight plan until they get hit in the face 😅😂
I'm champ 1 in duos (highest I've been is champ 2). I can confirm that positioning is the most important thing to ranking up, but if you want to get to champ or higher there are definitely some basic mechanics you need to learn. You don't need to be able to air dribble, flip reset, ceiling shot, or speed flip well. You should know how to half flip consistently, be able to do simple wavedashes off the wall to maintain momentum, and learning controlled powerslide cuts is a very effective and easy to learn mechanic. If those mechanics are second nature to you, all you need it good positioning and game sense to get to Champ+ easy!
I would definitely recommend learning good car control for mechanics because I was a freestyler d1 then I focused game sense for literally 3 days and got champ. Mechanics are super useful for outplays and game sense is pretty easy to learn
I'm C1 now in 2s and 3s. I train mechanics like air dribbles and rings maps since I was plat 1, but I almost never used them in game (back then my car control wasn't even comparable to how it is now, obviously, precision comes with training and time!), I always prioritized positioning instead. Now I'm starting to train mechanics a bit more seriously, like air dribbles with air roll left, but still not using it in game (planning to do soon, though). These tips really works!
i think even if you can rank up with only positioning and no mechanics the game gets better when you learn new stuff like flip resets. im not saying that you should focus more on mechanics (great vid btw) but you feel succes when you hit your musty double touch.
I'm GC and Ive done it all solo playing. My strength is my rotation and positioning. The mechanics used to get here are half flip, aerials, ground dribbles, airdribbles, a few wave dashes and ceiling shots. That's it. If you know when to go when not to and play good passes youre good to go
I know i might be a lil bit late for the answer, but i still want to share my experience with rocket league. I started back in 2021 early-summer, and reached champ1 in 120h in-game. I just watched Lethamyr's series about ranking up in 2s and 3s, and absorbed information like a sponge. The only thing i learned by the time was basic straight aerials, and speed-flips. Because they seemed to be easy to do in KBM. Now i have smth about 500h total in different accounts, and im still champ1(div4 in peak). I noticed, that somewhere in d3-c1 you begin to experience difficulties in the game due to lack of mechanics. So now i am training my air-dribble and ceiling shots. I can do them, and i learn them really fast, because i have a basic understanding of how the car works, but i still do them inconsistently due to lack of practice. The point of my comment is -- i was champ with 100h in game without mechanics And i still have champ with mechanics and 500h. You can easily get to GC2-3, even SSL(youtube videos, hi) without mechanics. It's just that it will be quite difficult, and the reasonable rank to start training your mechanics is around d2-d3-c1
I’ve been D3-C1 for several seasons. Nobody is hitting flip resets. Most players can hit an aerial, but You might see a true air dribble once every ten games. Back post is the most important thing Diamond players need to learn. Most goals aren’t from an amazing offensive play. It’s from a breakdown in rotations.
I’m rlly confused with the speedflip suggested rank. I am d2-3 and I learnt speedflips in early plat and it’s helped my kickoffs a lot. If it can give lower ranks such a big advantage on kickoffs then why shouldn’t you learn it earlier?
the point is not that it won't help, it's that there are other easier things to focus on first. Being able to double tap in bronze would give you a big advantage, but it's much easier to focus on hitting the ball where you want consistently
bros really helped me out with this, i was stuck in plat 1 barely able to power shot but after learning positioning, managed to get highest as a diamond 1, diamond 2 with just ariels and power shots and positioning before i learned to start dribbliing
Great video Wayton. But you forgot some important aspects. 1. When you fail, dont get angry. LEARN. Watch what you messed up and why you chose to do that specific action. Learning from your own mistakes should get you at least plat. 2. Not being able to hit the ball IS a big deal, but not as big as positioning. I do warmup matches against the easiest bots just to reset my brain to feel the car control. and last: learn ground play before even considering taking it to the skies. Have a strong foundation to build on. btw, i use a nacon compact wired controller. This controller has bigger buttons closer to each other which makes fast aerials easier. Its like fatfingering a blackberry keyboard. XD. Love your vids bro, made me a better rocketeer
Thanks Wayton! Recently, a friend of mine who is a champ told me all about 2s rotations and I went from Plat 2, to Diamond 1 in about one or two weeks. This is just more proof that it is really important to learn rotations.
It also really depends on what you're trying to achieve: a high rank or maybe a Freestyler? It's also important that, even if you want to be a Freestyler, make sure to get a certain rank first. Before going absolutely for mechanics only, get about high Diamond or even better, champ. For me, I always wanted to be mechanical, so I grinded ranked with positioning and barely and good mechanics to Champ 3. After that, I started Freestyling, achieving Grand Champ 2 in normal Gamemodes or Grand Champ 3 in Hoops. I'd consider myself a Freestyler now and the mechanics eventually helped me in ranked as well.
Im diamond 3 and i would honestly recommend getting comfortable with movement mechanics such as 180's to make yourself move more efficently acround the field. Positioning is everything ofc but sometimes you misread balls and need to fall back quickly but your car is pointed towards the opposite team. Or on the opposite side maybe you need to push up because your teammate just got lucky and got a great clear but your car is facing the wrong way.
It might be helpful to post some of those videos. I can say pretty strongly that game sense of a SSL/GC is going to be so much stronger than the game sense of a Plat/Diamond. I’m a player that focuses about 20% on mechanics and 80% on game sense(positioning/decision making). The 20% is mainly focused on ball control on the ground(simple dribbles & powershots). I haven’t checked you’re videos but it might make a good video to find folks at various levels who are trying to be focused on the right things but are still making big mistakes. Of course, there is such a thing as basic natural talent. This talent doesn’t guarantee your level but strongly influences it with other variables such as work ethic. Either way, thanks for the video. Helpful as always. :)

The only mechanics I would recommend everyone learn (to a certain level of course, depending on their rank), is power shots and accuracy. That'll help you get far further than air dribbles and ceiling shots
Ground dribbles are especially helpful
I'd add half flips and recoveries, those are not too hard to learn, and useful at all ranks.

Im GC 2, I don’t speed flip, I probably only air dribble once a game, and maybe hit a flip reset on a weekly basis. I’m not incapable of doing these, I just realize there are better options at certain times during the game.
Facts. Im d3 and cringe when i see people trying to dribble. I dont even think about doing it in game because it is pointless almost all the time
@@dreamsdicc1817 Dribbling on the ground is good though, provided you know when to actually do it.

Excellent point, I agree with everything you just said.
Exactly, when I was in plat i instantly noticed the difference when I started rotating back post, all the shots were so easy to save
@@petermilz9984 yeah i generally focus on being consitent and just having fun because it's just a game and we often tend try too hard

Same
This was very well-made.
I probably wouldnt have played the game as much as i have if I didnt want to be able to do that
Yeah, it's more in what rank are the mechanics most usefull instead of when you should learn them.
I don't think it's wrong to practice mechanics but there are definitely players out there that hold back their gameplay by exclusively focusing on mechanics
May I ask when you started playing ?
I'm in the exact same boat as you in c2 but people are a lot less toxic and I don't get called out much, in fact someone offered to coach me once lmao

Rumble maybe lower than that because of spikes
I don't do a speedflip but I can do a fast flip. (Not diangly tho) also how do you spell that word XD?
@@MinecraftTestSquad A speedflip kickoff should land your car at a point where if you break, you don't hit the ball, so if you're delaying it, then they just can't read it. Speed flip is undeniably the best way to kickoff in the game
@@MinecraftTestSquad Thats what i do nice (im d1 and have always seen people doing speedflip kickoff since i was gold 2-3)
backpost rotations have easily had the most impact on my gameplay
@Alisa Vewa Amazing spot on reply!!
I’m GC2 and got there by just hitting the ball consistently. Recently just started directional air roll as well, it feels soooo clean
@@alecahrens1671 how was the switch? did it take long to get used to and how did u do it?
Good luck to everyone making that climb.
when you say unnecessary, what do you mean specifically?
- plat 3, trying to hit diamond for the first time
Same bro I was plat 3 and now im champ 2 with high plat maybe low diamond mechanics.
(Back to RL)
When I'm matched with a player who is gifted in their mechanics and can outplay the other team's ability to make saves, I'm left with three options: a) compete with my teammate for the MVP position, b) continue to be a good teammate and pick up the defensive roles (even the ones that don't make points), c) leave the game.
TL;DR I beat a champ as a diamond using positioning!
Tell this a dude triple flip-reseting on you while you're only plat
Its been happening a lot even in Gold 3 1s. I think it happens when u hit levels 550 to 600 and haven't reach a high rank maybe

Would've been cool to hear what you actually played on the piano!
I think the best think to learn in Gold/Plat is to fake and powershot, faking isn't really hard and you can rank up easily
there is one very useful mechanic that even d3 players often dont use:
fast aerial or when youre in net simply double jump. that saved me probably one goal every game and is extremely useful when youre plat to diamond
I don't know how to fast aerial bc I'm a ground player and I'm d2

True
Yeah but even the mechanics people choose to polish are often the less useful ones. Things like power shots, simple but effective aerials, car control, ball control... those are all like alien language to people who talk about "mechanics".
Yea things like ground dribbles. Power shots. Just hitting the ball in the air. Nothing fancy. Maybe even pinches are used alot in my games so I polished those and it helps alot!
Absolutely agree, however
*I cannot hit a stationary (not moving) ball while aerialing*
gold 3 btw
Reads determine your positioning, and if you're already in a good position you have easier reads.
"Mechanics don't matter"
TurboPulsa probably: "EXACTLY. I've been telling people this for years, screw mechanics, screw strategy, scuffed goals are the only way!"
im glad i found stuff like this, ive been doing backpost rotation abit and have found defending so much easier, sometimes knowing a certain mechanic would've actually helped, but this vid is correct
Me after losing to a freestyler:
If anybody needs further convincing, flakes road to ssl without mechanics shows how you don't need anything more than a powerslide cut to make ssl
After scrolling for 5 min, finally someone knows who Flakes is. Thank you!!!
Hey Wayton! Actually i think i have a bit different look at the case. For me grinding mechanics in lower ranks can be good ONLY if u don't want to rank up. For example i was płat 2 last season and most of the time i was going for freestyle kind of shots mainly because its just fun to at least try scoring them.
I don"t want to flex or something like that but because of it (mechanics) people think i m higher ranked than i am in reality
.
Is it just me or I just love him!
It's not just you
is it just me or are you farming likes?

I already knew that I needed to work on my positioning and rotations because I’m self aware that those are my severe weak points, but dang have you convinced me even more that I need to work on that even more than I had thought. Appreciate the vid and the hard work you put in. I’m currently D3/champ 1, my goal for this season is to get to champ 2 (in any playlist). Wasn’t sure exactly how that was gonna happen, but
I think it’s definitely achievable if I work hard on my positioning from now on.
I always thought i had learnt different mechanic too late
Now wayton showed me I'm right (im GC1 and still struggles in ceiling shots and speedfilps, let alone filp resets)
im gc1 and simple air dribbles are a struggle even in freeplay
speedflips are great though. More speed with less boost, and better flips for better 50/50s and kickoffs
Wayton has been GC1 for like 5 years. why listen to him? Joreuz is a PRO and he said he was practicing "useless" mechanics since platinum.
@@christiantaylor1495 if that's the case, you are a champ 1, why should I listen to you?(doesnt make sense right?)

Grats, now start working on basic attack mechanics: flicks, bounce dribbles, normal air dribbles and recoveries
Heck Yes!
I love how well you put your videos together. They helped me hit champ 2 from gold In 3 weeks of pure grinding but this is before ssl was a thing. I stopped playing and I'm trying to get back into the game and still find your vids amazing. I'm still placing champ 1 just struggle to get my game sense back and some mechanics that I used to find easy I know mechanics aren't the focus but It's what makes the game fun for me :) I rambled but just wanted to say thank you and I love the videos
Edit: I know gold to champ 2 in 3 weeks sounds bs.
1:38 that doctor look like pewdiepie does pewdiepie play rl lol
the thing about doing the mechanical wizardry when its actually consistent is it gives an imeadiate push
instant pressure for the opponent and your team can relax.
thats by far the biggest advantage of higher level mechanics vs positioning
but you need good positioning to reliably get the setups needed.
for example up at gc hoops a straight up powershot is not what gives you a goal, it will get defended as long as there is a defender.
but a pop up air dribble with high level of control can do so much more.
dont sleep on mechanics, but also dont force learn them too quickly
yeah, this will really help me. a couple days ago, i was put into a match against people with amazing mechanics.
You see, we don't learn the mechanics to rank up, we learn them to look awesome.
I had a video idea, where you could train people to have good replay analysis, and then have them 1v1 kind of like how you tricked JG with SSL’s. I was hoping I could be in it too.
Bro u are my favourite RUclipsr. Every week when u upload a new video I get so hyped to watch it. Keep up the great work man 👍
Thanks!
the crux of this video is that positioning is important.
I think the couple of videos you posted a couple years ago with bacl post rotations helped me way more than any of the style skills
Literally watch Flakes’ series on youtube, “Road to SSL without mechanics”. Maybe then yall will see that mechanics aren’t everything
Everybody has a fight plan until they get hit in the face 😅😂
air dribbles : around diamond
flip resets : high champ-low gc
ceiling shots : champ
speed flips : champ-gc but you dont have to until like gc 2-3
The point of my comment is -- i was champ with 100h in game without mechanics
And i still have champ with mechanics and 500h.
You can easily get to GC2-3, even SSL(youtube videos, hi) without mechanics. It's just that it will be quite difficult, and the reasonable rank to start training your mechanics is around d2-d3-c1
Your piano controller setup is actually very similar to my KBM setup since I don't actually use a mouse. Playing on an ErgoDox is so awesome xD
This explains a lot, I was gold 1 last season, and I more me mechanical, then I started to rotate and all that ,and now I'm diamond 1
