      They are all the same, yet so different in many ways. We have two now. Our 1 yr old is literally a blue heeled colored dingo. We named him Dingo and I can’t believe how big he is, huge legs, long, and he’s really long. Not like our 4 yr old blue.

    Our heeler actually learned left paw, right paw before being killed by Beneful. Trained for hard tricks in 15 minutes. Roll over and play dead after being shot by my hand in the shape of a gun and making a shot sound with my mouth, dancing on hind legs in a complete circle ( command was "dance around") . " Sheeba" was so strong she could pull a 100 lb. human across a carpeted floor when a rope toy was held overhead and the human laid on the floor... Her favorite toy was actually a clam shell from the beach ( Brigantine NJ) which we only let her have sparingly, because she liked to hone her teeth into incredible sharpness if left alone with it. Truly the smartest dog I have ever owned.

    Speak training, you need to find something that will get your dog to bark. For Ooma, it was gently blowing on her face would trigger a bark response. Once I knew that, I would say "speak" along with a corresponding hand motion (like an alligator mouth) blow on her face and if she barked, I would reward the behavior. This was one of the easier tricks to learn a sit is a natural action for her. All of her verbal commands have hand gestures to go with them which is useful in a noisy environment as she can do all of the tricks without hearing my voice.

    • @BuckMasterBradford7
      @BuckMasterBradford7 10 лет назад

      I have a blue heeler and she is a about 3 never taught her the fundamentals, and was wondering if you had a few tips on teaching her to sit, like you did teaching to speak.

    • @SailingNorCal
      @SailingNorCal  10 лет назад +4

      BuckMasterBradford7 Start with your dog already sitting. Put a treat in your open palm and let your dog see and smell the treat but make sure she stays sitting. Raise your hand up (like lifting air) and say the sit command. When she stays sitting, reward with the treat. It may take several goes before she gets it. The first couple times you try this while she is standing, also move towards her a bit to encourage the sit motion. I'd immediately follow this up with "stay" training to relate the two commands.

    Great relationship between you two. Our next dog is likely to be like be an Aussie Cattle dog. Had a German shepherd, loved her. Then we got our JRT, she rescued me at a tough time. Repeated every behavior that got a laugh. But I want a midsize, tough puppy. Smart and loyal. This breed looks like it will work. My neighbor's have liked bot dogs, but have asked me not to get a standard pit bull or doberman. We had to place a son back into foster care. He may come back with ill intent. So I don't expect the dog to be my only defense. But I want a dog I can train and have a relationship with, but who also will alarm bark, etc. Jacks just bark for any reason. I am hoping this breed will be a good match. My friend who shows dogs thinks my JRT was nicest she met, so she thinks this breed will work for my abilities.

    • @SailingNorCal

      This trick is a challenge, you need to start with your dog facing you and reward stopping while mid walk back to you. Takes a lot of patience since your cattle dog like mine probably hates being far away.

    • @SailingNorCal

      Ooma barks every time I blow on her nose so to train her to speak I would say "Speak", blow on her nose and reward the behavior if she barked. Eventually I no longer had to blow on her nose. She also responds to the hand motion of fingers opening and closing.
