"Hello everyone, and welcome to Nano Research. In this video, I will discuss the concept of Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) and the process of determining it. FWHM is a crucial parameter used to assess crystallite size, dislocation density, microstrain, and more.
First, let's look into the concept. Understanding the concept is essential for gaining a deeper insight into the topic. I have selected a random graph for illustration, where the X-axis represents the angle in 2 theta, and the Y-axis represents intensity in arbitrary units. I've changed the color of the graph for better clarity.
To manually determine the FWHM of this XRD peak, I start by drawing a straight line along the baseline. Next, I draw another vertical line from the peak height to the baseline; the height of this line represents the Full Maximum of the peak. Now, I draw a horizontal line at the midpoint of the peak, which represents the Half Maximum. I then draw two vertical lines at both sides of this horizontal line. The width of the peak at Half Maximum between these two vertical lines is the Full Width at Half Maximum.
I hope you understand this straightforward concept. Now, let's determine the FWHM value manually. In this case, the width is represented as beta. To find beta, I calculate the difference between the two points, which comes out to be approximately 0.31 degrees.
Now, I will show you how to determine it in Origin using a Gaussian fit. First, I take an XRD plot to work with. As mentioned earlier, the X-axis represents the angle in 2 theta, and the Y-axis represents intensity in arbitrary units. I will find the FWHM for the most intense peak. First, I zoom in on the peak, then go to the fitting option and select nonlinear peak fitting. After clicking "OK," I need to set the category and function. I set the category to "Origin based basic function" and the function to "Gauss."
As you can see, a red fitting line is generated, but the fitting is not yet perfect. I will click the iteration button repeatedly until the fitting improves. Once I achieve a satisfactory fit, I will click "OK," and the results will display the value of FWHM, which is 0.8289 degrees.
I hope you understand this overall process. If you liked this video or have any queries, please feel free to comment, and I will respond. To support us, please follow and subscribe to this channel for more research-related videos. Thank you!"
