super useful to the point explanation of the difference between hog ring and detent . especially the part where you showed how we can use detent pin in two modes
My friggin desalt wouldn’t let go of my sockets, very frustrating sick of fighting with it, you’ve saved me any aggravation in the future, thanks from Canada.
I try to avoid the pin detent impacts because to set the pin up they have to drill a hole in the Anvil and it creates a weak spot I’ve had one break straight through they can (not always) snap like a carrot the hog ring design is stronger
Thanks for this. Nice to know I’m not the only one! I’ve had neck pain all day from pulling on the Milwaukee “Shockwave” socket stuck in my Milwaukee impact ratchet. It lives up to its name, sending shocks up my arm to my sore neck. Geez...
Cool. I put a tiny drop of silicone to lubricate the hog ring to make it less sticky. Or, use a 1" long impact extension with ball detent...this will cause some torque loss, but might be worth the trade-off in some cases.
being older and a tad weaker i cheat by positioning my thumb on the nose of the tool and it helps to apply pressure to pop off the socket. some sockets have a hole that a small screw driver fits to give leverage to pop socket off.
I have never used an impact wrench. Today I bought a new one and It is a friction anvil. Anyway, I replaced the radiator in my car today but didn't use my impact because I didn't know you had to push so hard to get the socket on the new tool and I thought it was a defect so I gave up. Had no Idea they are that hard at first. I am going right now to see if I can get a socket on. Thanks!
Okay, I just gave up to easy. Just tried to get some sockets on and every one I tried worked. I just went at an angle to get them on then it started getting a little easier.
Thanks for the helpful video. However, in the video you used the pin in the wrong way so you need to push it from the socket's hole with a screwdriver or something else and the socket will be free like you explained in the description.
hmm. with the pin detent style - i didn't know you can opt to Not align the pin. That could come in handy but would it wear out your chuck faster over time? Also, can you maybe stick a nail in the socket hole and depress the pin if you want - to aid in removing? Thanks, you explained it all well
The hole in the base of the socket is to allow you to use a small pin to insert into the hole to release the pin, so no need to struggle to get the socket off as you were doing !
Great video. I'm about to buy a new DeWalt and this helps me make the choice. BTW, I knew that the pin was gonna fly out when you pulled out the drift... Tried to warn you!
Pin indent is bettet you can use it two ways if you eant the ratchet to stay on so it doesn't fall off then line it up with the hole if you want it to slip on and off easy don't line it up with hole but with hogring it's hard to put on and take off
Hog ring can be annoying to get a bit ON the tool but I'll take that any day over a stupid detent pin. With a detent you have to be Hercules to get a socket OFF the tool.
@@singlecams Actually, in some cases, it IS true. My brand new Milwaukee was very hard to remove, when the pin was aligned. But, all you have to do, is push the pin in with a small probe, to remove the socket. Just an extra step.
hey man finally i can reply to you I know you left couple of comments but it wouldn't let me reply back maybe you were using google+ or something im not sure :)
Yep I've also made them in 17mm for some civic, 22mm for toyota, just one inside the other and weld it on, bought them for cheap at harbor freight, Works awesome too.
Seems like the hog ring is a lot easier to work with unless you are in a factory setting. The TTI built Ryobi pin detent seemed much more user friendly. A nail or thin punch would likely be a good tool to have handy with a DeWalt pin detent. Good vid!
Thanks for your video. I was trying to figure out the difference since the price is exactly the same. I will be getting the detent pin since I have zero strength in any part of my body lmao.
I honestly kind of wish I had gotten a pin detent on my newest impact, because I don't use it A TON and I can tell the hog ring is going to take some time to break in because I was fighting really hard with sockets both on and off. At one point I spent like 5 mins with a flat head trying to pry off a socket. I ended up using a short extension to make things easier but couldn't fit it in anywhere and kinda ruined the point of a compact impact.
Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent video. It has answered all my questions. Why in the heck would anyone give this a thumbs down haha!
Thanks for making this video. Showed me the difference between this and a detent, and I also discovered by you holding that 899 how big that freaking thing is lol...going to get a 889 now as I am just doing some odd stuff to cars around the house and not a professional mechanic. Thumbs up.
After watching you do somewhere around 437 attach-and-remove cycles, I got it how they work; You didn't need to continue all the way to 1000. ;) But very helpful video just the same; thanks for clearing it up so I know which type to buy.
+Roland Jones i took out the pin and ground it with a file, just a little off the top and now the socket comes off with one pull. I will upload video works perfect now. But if you need socket to stay on for good then best not to grind it and use a tool like you say.
Tbh all i do is take the hog ring off immediately when i get a new gun and just hold the socket on by hand, them hog rings are a real hassle man i tell you i cannot stand em lol, always stuggling to get the socket on and off, only benefit it has is holding the socket onto the gun which really isn’t necessary
you have to google dewalt hog ring replacement or contact your local dealer you can buy online but have to do some research to see who will ship wherever you are. the price for the ring is like $4 and under
How do you like your cordless electric impact wrench? I was told that they are only good for removing wheel lug nuts but not much else. In your video, you have some large sockets presumably used for drive axle nuts. Is it effective for removing those axle nuts?
check out the link I sent. You really needs to check the power level of the impact there are so many different ones , but this one can do most anything you need it to. but generally anything in the 200-300 ft-lbs of torque range have no problem with lugnuts and may struggle with axle nuts, then you get into these full size impacts like this dewalt that put out 1000ft-lbs and those are really the ones you want to get for axle nuts and the larger fasteners. I have posted many impact videos hope you check them out. Thank you
Thanks. I just watched your other videos. Very convincing. I have a cheap ($40) corded impact wrench and it's not very powerful even though it is advertised to deliver 250 ft-lb of torque. So, I decide to get myself a good cordless one.

What a marvelous video,
No inane music 😩
No stupid ad's
Just real , precise informative & handy information.....
Excellent article 👌💯
Thanks 👍
i hate inane music
Excellent video. I'm choosing an impact wrench at the moment and this has explained the differences between Hog and Detent. Thanks!
thanks for watching and comment
Which did you go with?
@@Jaystonishing Detent, so I can have the socket easy to swap by rotating it off the pin if needed.
Exact scenario I’m in. He’s answered me perfectly 👌🏽.
same here 👍🏼
Best explanation of the hog ring I’ve seen on RUclips. Thanks!
Wonderfully demonstrated. I really appreciate that you take the time to show multiple times. Thank you for sharing!
I loved the voice over at 5:17 when he pulls the pin and since it is spring loaded, I am sure it flew across the room.
I thought I heard a slight voice....oh shit......
super useful to the point explanation of the difference between hog ring and detent . especially the part where you showed how we can use detent pin in two modes
Thanks for explaining. I thought it was something I was doing that caused difficulty getting sockets off my hog ring,
My friggin desalt wouldn’t let go of my sockets, very frustrating sick of fighting with it, you’ve saved me any aggravation in the future, thanks from Canada.
Thanks! I was wondering why my 1/2 inch sockets weren’t fitting my new impact air gun. Makes a lot more sense now that the gun is so new.
If you pull the socket while engaging the motor the hammering vibrations will help it release.
Lol
I try to avoid the pin detent impacts because to set the pin up they have to drill a hole in the Anvil
and it creates a weak spot I’ve had one break straight through
they can (not always) snap like a carrot

5:13 Gave me 1911 disassembly flashbacks
Gracias a este video, preferí comprar mi DCF899 con "pin" y hasta el momento me parece perfecta. Saludos!
Con pin es más fácil de que se rompa
thank you for explaining the differance
Cool. I put a tiny drop of silicone to lubricate the hog ring to make it less sticky. Or, use a 1" long impact extension with ball detent...this will cause some torque loss, but might be worth the trade-off in some cases.
Thanks man, i was wondering about the difference between Detent vs Ring,
i love Detent, i'll go with it ;)
being older and a tad weaker i cheat by positioning my thumb on the nose of the tool and it helps to apply pressure to pop off the socket. some sockets have a hole that a small screw driver fits to give leverage to pop socket off.
5:12 LOL! Haven't we all had those moments: oh shit...
I have never used an impact wrench. Today I bought a new one and It is a friction anvil. once you use you use the impact the ring will get worn down and it it will loosen up.
@@singlecams - Yeah, I figured that out. Thanks!
Great vid that doemonstrates all the points about usability that I was looking to understand. Thank you...now I can spend my money!!
Sweet! Thanks for showing us how you remember the detent pin 👍🏾
Just got the Hog Ring Anvil its about 30 Dollars more the Detent Anvil but is easier to change multiple Sockets. Thank you for your comparing the two.
Thanks for the explanation. I will be getting the hog ring version. Right now the hog ring version of Dewalt dcf891 is $30 cheaper in Canada
yes go for it it woks great
Thanks for the helpful video.
However, in the video you used the pin in the wrong way so you need to push it from the socket's hole with a screwdriver or something else and the socket will be free like you explained in the description.
Sounds like niko from gta 4 great video by the way

Very well done, with good close-ups that were in focus. Bravo and thank you.
That was very informative you made me laugh at the end and I hope you managed to get it fixed
Thank you for explaining the difference. It was VERY helpful. BtW, I love the colorful metaphor at the end.
I usually have to depress the pin to get the socket off. I tried working it off, too, tight. Now, I know, don’t align pin with socket hole. Thank!😃
Put a bit of grease, or even WD-40 on your hog ring or pin. It will be easier on and off, hold just as well, and last much longer.

Thank You for the video brother. May the Most High God Bless you
I read that the Dewalt’s pin is their weakness and quite a few have broken. Might go with the more robust hog ring myself.
Hog ring can be annoying to get a bit ON the tool but I'll take that any day over a stupid detent pin. With a detent you have to be Hercules to get a socket OFF the tool.
You didn't even watch the vid😄...that is not true at all

Just an extra step.
Push a probe or small screw driver through the hole in the socket, to depress the pin. The socket will slide right off.
This answers a question I have had for a while. Thanks. - jwrit
fps Russia doing voice over for you?
hey man finally i can reply to you I know you left couple of comments but it wouldn't let me reply back maybe you were using google+ or something im not sure :)
Yeah I'm on g+, how you been buddy.
i've been good man so you made those heavy sockets did you just stick 2 together inside each other and weld em up. I think that is the best way
Yep I've also made them in 17mm for some civic, 22mm for toyota, just one inside the other and weld it on, bought them for cheap at harbor freight, Works awesome too.
sorry for late reply I wanted to try a 14mm for those older Hondas with the seized rear control arm bolts and see how it works out :)
I would like the new Dewalt
impact . this one does not
have the detent pin anvil
Great Video!! Regrettably I bought DeWalt hog ring because it was on sale T_T, I wish I watch your video before buying!!
Seems like the hog ring is a lot easier to work with unless you are in a factory setting. The TTI built Ryobi pin detent seemed much more user friendly. A nail or thin punch would likely be a good tool to have handy with a DeWalt pin detent. Good vid!
If the hog ring binds you either wish you bought a pin detent or use the same size socket for ever
I felt that when it flew off and you went "oh shit!"
💀💀💀
I am currently struggling with a new hog ring. I found this video haha.
Now I know, which I had no idea before, thanks
oh Man what a great video this guy deserves award for the honesty at the end!!!
Thanks for your video. I was trying to figure out the difference since the price is exactly the same. I will be getting the detent pin since I have zero strength in any part of my body lmao.
Thank you so much this video was super helpful
so with detent pin you can use socket without hole also
I have a dewalt DCF899N with the detent pin. After a few years I now need to use a screwdriver to wedge sockets off. It's VERY annoying.
Wd40 on the detent pin and put socket on and off to work the oil in the pin then works fine 👍 mine did it after years of use
at 5:13 ... "oh $hit..." just like me in when working on things, lol
Like others, I'm purchasing an impact wrench and wanted to know the difference between hog ring and detent pin.
Hog ring all day! Speed and repairability.
Can the tool use smaller sockets?? Bits??
I can’t believe you found it!!
Great video man, this helped me out with my new impact. I couldnt get the sockets to fit but with your help i jimmied it in and it works! THANKS
How do you replace that tip or ring when it wears out?
I honestly kind of wish I had gotten a pin detent on my newest impact, because I don't use it A TON and I can tell the hog ring is going to take some time to break in because I was fighting really hard with sockets both on and off. Change it to an o ring
Thank you, very well explained.
the milwaukee 2860 has a pin detent and it has the same problem the socket locks because the pin sticks out 1/8 of an inch I had to grind it down
Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent video. It has answered all my questions. Why in the heck would anyone give this a thumbs down haha!
One frequent problem with the hog ring design is the impacting action pulling the socket off the chuck.
Nicely Explained..Thanks. Good Video.
Thanks for making this video.
Showed me the difference between this and a detent, and I also discovered by you holding that 899 how big that freaking thing is lol...going to get a 889 now as I am just doing some odd stuff to cars around the house and not a professional mechanic.
Thumbs up.
It's not in a straight line when you pull it holding by the handle. It works better holding by the barrel with socket facing towards you
I feel like my life is one big "oh shit" moment
Yr video is very helpful. Thxs
Thank you. This was very helpful.
Good information here!
However this video makes the top of my shoulder hurt. 😅
Thank you. I thought I purchased the wrong socket for my impact that has hog ring.
You can use any socket as long as its the right drive size 1/2" 3/8 etc
which one is better hog ring or pin detent??
help please
Is some play in the anvil normal?
5:13... don't DO IT !!! Don't Do IT ! ! ! heh
Great information. Thank You!
So lucky you found that. A good example of the difference in those two types. Oh..... Lol
Thanks for the video
After watching you do somewhere around 437 attach-and-remove cycles, I got it how they work; You didn't need to continue all the way to 1000. ;) But very helpful video just the same; thanks for clearing it up so I know which type to buy.

i saw that "oh shit" coming at the end...lol
Probably just stick a rod in the hole to release the pin?
Ty, helps a lot.
Hello that if possible to make a hole in the square 1/2
thank you
I use one end of a needle nose pliers to remove sockets on a detent end
+Roland Jones i took out the pin and ground it with a file, just a little off the top and now the socket comes off with one pull. I will upload video works perfect now. But if you need socket to stay on for good then best not to grind it and use a tool like you say.
hahahaha, saw it coming, and heard the "oh shit!"
I got a socket stuck on my 1/2 impact how would I remove it
Maybe use a hammer & cold chisel, or use a vice, hammer & pin punch.
Are those hog rings replaceable once it gets worn out?
yes they are
Where can replacement be purchased?
you have to google dewalt hog ring replacement or contact your local dealer you can buy online but have to do some research to see who will ship wherever you are. the price for the ring is like $4 and under
Thanks! Great video
Drives out pin retaining pin. Pin goes flying. “Oh s*#t”.

if the hog ring is old and it feels loose. is there a way to fix it?
you can buy a new hogring for like $4 or just try to expand the one you have and see if it hold better
New Hog Rings are a absolute pain.
