The Golden Age of Football in Colombia had war, destruction and corruption. (Long before Pablo Escobar)
Between 1949 and 1954 some of the world’s very best players would congregate in a brand new league with no history, in Colombia.
Tifo uncovers how a “pirate league” attracted stars of the day (including Di Stefano, World Cup winner Schubert Gambetta, and Manchester United’s Charlie Mitten), how an assassination of a presidential candidate launched the competition, and how the fallout changed a FIFA law

Im sure HITC Alfie loved the Neill Franklin mention
Alfie's agent haha
It's comforting in these trying times to know FIFA have always been terrible.
or depressing that little has changed
@@varunchand8546 corruption can't be changed unless you take everyone to jail and change the rules
Indeed. Levels.
@@_leivo Or creating an organization to compete with FIFA, what would be expensive, near impossible and the new organization could also become corrupt
What did Fifa do wrong back then?
Guys congrats for your video. I'm from Colombia and all the historical background of Colombia was correct. I'm really impressed with the accuracy of all the events you talked about during the video.
I just want to say that sadly the death of Gaitán was one of the determiners that changed Colombia's history but for worse. "El Bogotazo" stopped the development of the culture, due to the fact that Bogotá by that time was knew as " La Atenas Sudamericana". And sadly this event marked the way of a never ending history of violence and division. But despite all of the already mentioned, Colombia has a very warm and humble people. And yes, I know Colombia's history during the last century it's all about blacks and whites.
Are you of middle eastern descent? What's it like down there for other ethnicities? Just curious.
@@genekwagmyrsingh9433 My mom is from Bogotá and my father is from Morocco. I was born in Bogotá and lived there all my life, but since 2020 I'm studying in Spain.
My features are curious because physically I look as my father but my face has nothing to do with someone born in Colombia. You can say I am a walking mix of two cultures. Haha 😅
If you want to know what features can you expect from a Colombian person i wouldn't be able to explain how complex it is. There's too much colonial links between indigenous, the descendants of the people brought from Africa as slaves, a bunch of european and arab people and just as a first reference that would be ok. Anyway I would recommend you to deepen in the subject it's fascinating if you like social studies, history and also geography, like me :). I hope my response results helpful.
PD: you can ask me something else if you want.
PD2: sorry for such a long answer and also for the english mistakes.
@@abdullahraki5388 A couple years ago I visited Bogota and Colombia. It was a very beautiful city, very nice people there
@@abdullahraki5388 nice a3chiri hhhhhhhh
@@genekwagmyrsingh9433 Many Colombian people have Arab roots. Shakira, for instance.
Colombian league ‘can we please be members’
Fifa ‘no and here’s all the punishments’
Colombian league ‘fine then we’ll steal all the Peruvians’
This reads like a Bill Wurtz video. And now I want one about the history of football
the original pirate material, you’re listening to the streets
Shite, you beat me to it
Has it come to this?
Geezers need excitement
Lock down your aerial
For this ain't a club track, pull out yer sack and sit back
Cracking video but I'm disappointed there were no actual pirates
damn me too
at least we had a pirate flag lol
Best thing about this is Transfermarkt lists di Stefano's transfer to Millonarios as a 'loan'
We might create something like a "Colombian loan" there. Note: I'm colombian and i'm laughing at the idea.
Credit to Tifo for this rare Jem, it's fun to see football in different era's and cultures.
As a colombian i am both flattered and surprised by this video
Growing up my grandfather would always talk about El dorado or the golden age of colombian futbol. I really didnt know or understand the history of it until watching this. It reminds of him so much. Thanks for making the video. 🤙🤙🤙
I am a simple man. I see a new Tifo upload, I watch and like.
As a colombian, I'd like to thank you for sharing this information, it is really important. This period is unknown even in Colombia.
Neil Franklin, for more of the great man, read the book "Englands Greatesst Defender"
Thanks alfie
I have that book lmao
How much did Alfie pay you??
@@ratedpending so do I actually. Good book I must say
@@nikolasqkly7742 I cannot disclose if payment was made regarding the marketing of his book
I appreciate the little details added into the video that can go unnoticed. The churches portrayed when showing the map of colombia are the actual historical buildings in those cities, as well as the accurate portrayal of the currency at the time
What a fantastic fact i got Thank you Tifo Football love the channel
So basically the cool Super League 😭😭😭
Charlie Mitten aka The Bogota Bandit as they would call him back in England after he left. Awesome video!
Love it!
Just a couple comments on it:
Gaitán wasn't Bogotá's mayor when he was killed, that actually happened during the '30s.
The problems between Dimayor and Comebol didn't end up in 1954 with the Lima Pact. For example, in the Libertadores of 1964 Millonarios faced Independiente de Avellaneda in the gruop stage. The final match between both, which had to be played in Bogotá didn't happen because the Argentinian side never showed up, they argue there was a problem with the way Millonarios players were singed, Conmebol agreed and gave away the points and the semifinal to Independiente.
Greetings from Bogotá.
Did anyone ask?

Anyone else rewatching this after the announcement of the super league?
I thought I knew a lot about football history until I subscribed to this channel. It’s amazing how many unique, interesting, and well researched topics Tifo covers. Massively underrated channel.
🥲 Tifo teaching me about my Colombian football heritage. Gracias !
Great research, accurate information, and even the illustration related to "La Violencia" resembles Colombian artist's depiction of it. Truly quality content here at Tifo.
This channel is just incredible!
Tifo is just dope man. The people's football encyclopedia. Appreciate your work massively!
Oh boy, this is going to blow up isn't it?
How on earth as a Colombian I have never heard of this before. Yet again outstanding content Tifo!
You're not colombian then my man.
This is known all over Colombia...
Talk to a Millonarios fan and they'll talk your ear off with their crap.
The animations on this channel are normally excellent, but in this video they're legitimate art.
Wow, as an Argentine the myth around Colombian football during those days was mostly focused on the Argentine players strike. I have never heard about this before. This guy is a true football researcher. Well done mate.
I had always wondered what would happen if a league with considerable resources operated outside of FIFA's jurisdiction. I'm satisfied
El dorado city of gold🔥
Great video I would love to see this channel do a video on the 91/92 season the last season before the premier league and the last first division season and championship win for Leeds United
If you enjoy this video: You may be interested in "England's Greatest Defender" a book penned by Alfie Potts Harmer of HITC Sevens, Detailing Neil Franklin's career and also a look into the El Dorado era of Colombia football.
Loved the design on this one. You got an already good job and took one step up.
Never thought id see my club mentioned on tifo, beyond stoked. Great vid as always
Tifo using Christmas Jazz music in the background.....I like it.
Never heard about this league, thanks TIFO FOOTBALL for this ❤️❤️
Tifo how about you publish a football magazine monthly? It would be awesome
Literally TheAthletic
@Sikho Mbixane it doesn't matter. Should we juat read everything on the internet? Read something on real life it wont blind your eyes!
I would love to see a tactical analysis of koemans 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-2-1 that is bringing much success to barcelona despite a bad start to the season the team looks like a legit title contender due to the new system
Great content lads
Keep up the good work
Pedernera later became Colombian National Football team’s National Coach and qualified for their first World Cup in 1962 in Chile
Just one of many Argentine coaches who found success in Colombia
Incredibly beautiful art throughout this video
Great video! I'm from Colombia and I didnt know this.
This is a great research. Thanks for doing this note
Great production 🔥🔥🔥
I hear ARRsenal played in the pirate league.
And the Senegalese player I. Meite
Nice vid bro like always
This was incredibly good, the future of RUclips content
Very Accurate and good video, made me subscribe (y)
Thanks guys for the knowledge. Outstanding story
DiMayo: "Look at me. I'm the FIFA now"
A video for Thomas ruchel's tactics which has certainly made chealsea a legit title cotender sure deserved to be explained by master analysers like you
A player from an Argentine club named Adolfo, seems sus 👀👀
Born 1918. Adolfo is a common name here. I.e. Adolfo Gaich.
this channel is awesome
This should be a movie!!
Have you done a video on the situation in Qatar?
Yep ruclips.net/p/PLWYJXDKS21OEOqqF6-3E1vQXUrkL_UuoQ
Surprised the owner of the league wasn't Ibrahim Sangare
It's something of a story to have played in the same pitch Di Stefano once played. My university's stadium (yeah, we had a team in the league those years and he played there).
Just one thing: are you sure the fee to enter the league was in pesetas (Spain's currency)? Wasn't it pesos (our currency then and now) instead?
VERY GOOD VIDEO!
Now the only Pirate footballers can be found playing for Orlando Pirates
I am here 3 weeks later after confirmation of European Super League to see what similarities it could have with this??
More historical/cultural content. I've read every major history of football but I can never get enough!
Wow! This was very accurate. Just the story my father told me when I was a kid. That’s how I know it’s accurate.
di stefano the man that played for like 4 countries or something
There should be a movie about this.
Please make video of brazil samba (ginga) style football tactics
this time it might work, cz of massive telebroadcasting and stuff.
Andy Mitten has talked about Charlie, (think Charlie was his grandad) it’s a fascinating story.
Could you do a video about the benefits and downsides for the BeNeleague
That second guy from right lowkey looks like Bruno fernandes
Came back to this video after the European Super League announcement, curious how it plays out and if it shall have longevity.
I can't be the only one noticing they've used the wrong flag on multiple occasions... Other than that: awesome video as always
Make a video explaining Micheal Owens balloon dor win
The pronunciation is bothering me, it's maYOR, not MAYor. That said, excellent video as always ❤️
Can you please do a video about the Irish football league!
How, in the goddamned fuck, does TIFO not have 1m+ subscribers? Ludicrious!
Video suggestion : footballers and bow legs
Sustained by coffee industry lol
Bosman Rulling was "legal European piracy"...
One could say the club football structure in the U. S. breeds pirate leagues.😎
Do one where you talk more about narco football
Foreshadowing?
We should make the Big Time pirate league, taking the fights from hockey and the doping and data from baseball. Think about the possibilities Joe, just think about it...
VIDEAZO
In 1948 FIFA suspended the Columbian league from international competition, in doing so created a loop hole in transfers allowing the development of a ‘pirate’ league.
In 2021 Tifo makes a video about it and annoys HITC7 in the process because he didn’t manage to produce the video first.
Very topical right now. May FIFA, UEFA, and all domestic league FAs not repeat history.
Awesome video !! I love Colombian women !
😳
Such a random thing to comment
Anyone here after the announcement of European Super League ??
*Who is watching this after the ESL controversy*
The original pirate super league, you're listening to TIFO
It should be noted that Colombia was banned from the 1954 world cup as a result of this.
4:26 you sure that’s correct 🇨🇴?
Yes that's the old Colombian flag
I wonder if I could get Joe Devine to read my eulogy.
I’d make sure he pronounced my name wrong, though.
Either that, or I want him to be the person who tells me I have a terminal illness.
A timely post given the announcement of the European Super League.
