if its a one off book I'd recommend buying a handmade journal off eBay or Etsy instead, cheaper than the tools and supplies you'll need and you're supporting a small buisness, if its just for the experience though look for a local bookbinding class.

I have been waiting 11 years to find an answer as to how to honor my father’s letters, journals, diaries, “snippets” as he called his jottings. All found in an old suitcase after he passed, unknown to his children. He was a craftsman, like Dennis, and as sad as it is that he is not alive to go on this journey with me, I am able to labor in love a book such as what Dennis is making, I am not alone. Right now I am going through each video while taking notes. My sewing/craft room is cleared out completely of distractions, as I begin this exciting adventure. I hope others will follow me with their thoughts, and Dennis has promised to be there for me also. I cannot thank you enough for that! Life is good!

I took bookbinding as an elective in college when I was training to be a jeweler. The sounds of the paper folding and the feel of a bone folder running over the seam can't be beat! Easily one of my favorite hobbies. You're obviously incredibly skilled at what you do, and that's lovely to see!

My mother's an aspiring writer. Her works are truly incredible, but we're not financially ready enough to publish them officially. I really want her stories to be published in hardcopies, and it breaks my heart to see even though we all want it so bad we unfortunately need to have more patience. So until that happens, I want to do something really special for her. That's why I'm here, trying to learn bits and bobs from this wonderful craftsmanship through as many tutorials as I can. Once I'm bit more confident, I shall print her stories one by one at home, and bind the pages together and try my best for it to look lovely and strong. And I'll give it to her, hopefully on her birthday this year in May! Thank you for posting these detailed and absolutely magnificent videos and walk throughs, I'm learning so much and I'm looking forward to making the very first of my own! Have a beautiful day❤️❤️❤️

@@elkesorcery Unfortunately, so many things kept all of us so occupied throughout the last few months I didn't have much time to make the book :(

So I'm editing the whole text right now. Afterwards I'll either make the book from scratch (perhaps the original copy?🥺❤️) or I'll get them printed from a cyber cafe, then made into a book (we have a shop at my grandparents' locality where they've been binding and rebinding books since almost a century!😍❤️)

The fact that RUclips (well, premium) has the option to slow down a video then I can pause it whenever I need to, in order to DO the step I am watching, I love it! Now I've been diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, and while the prognosis is good so far, I'm learning that there's really not enough time to dither about getting into things. I have just started to Book Binding and made my first notebook. It has lots of mistakes (but anyway, it is so special for me). After watching your video I recognised some of them (I am learning in the same way as your's), and learned practical tools. For example I have just bought an awl but it is a bit hard to use for me and it makes large holes. And now I am planning to buy a Punching Cradle :) Thank you for sharing these all. It seems like I will spend lots of time in your youtube channel :) Lots of love from Turkey.

hello, what you put on the spine of the book along with the stitching is some kind of fabric? The same thing happens to me in part 2 of these videos, I don't know what materials you use.
    ps Excellent work, very admirable.

The book is sewn on two linen tapes and the fabric along the spine is called mull. Thanks for watching!

Wonderful video! Hopefully this will inspire people to pick this art up adn stop it dying out. Do you ever just put the whole block in a vice and cut the sewing holes or is there a reson you prefer the template?

Using a saw to make the holes is a valid method, though I find it can be hard to do neatly. If you saw too deep the cuts will show through on the inside. Thanks for the great question!

Hello, Do you have any sugestions on how one may cut the pages of the book to be even without the special tooling?

Great video, but would be helpful to explain what you are doing and why you are doing it. Especially for students seeing this.
    Thanks.

At about the 1 minute mark, when you are folding the signatures into their final size, there are two edges that are folded but not slit. Is one of them (the non-bound edge) slit later in video? I can't seem to see that. Thanks!
