they could play.....there's a RUclips video of Jones demonstrating the chords and solos etc to the songs in an interview, and how he used to practice for hours on end....on speed !
Despite what anyone says, the Pistols were the 'Godfathers' of the punk movement; it was much, much more than just the 'recording studio' - it was a revolution unto itself. Great vid, thanks !!
Cook has that ability to make the simplest beat groove like nothing else. Like a simpler Bonham. Their high hats and snares are just baaarely behind the beat. Few drummers play that way. Then Glen is up to the task and knew his way around the fretboard. That rhythm section is so fucking good. A song so grimy and rotten shouldn't groove so hard, but it does, and it's fucking glorious. Also props to Lydon for his absolutely sick vocals here. Everyone from Joe Strummer to Tim Armstrong were influenced, directly or indirectly, by Johnny Rotten.
The 76 Demos like this one were the best things The Pistols recorded. The "Bollocks" album was too polished......Jones guitar sounds immense on this recording....Lydon's vocals primal..... Get the Spunk bootleg for the 1976 demos and outtakes....
Great! although there are much pictures who are well known, i like this compilation because there are a few pictures who are rather new to me, some i've seen before but never again, and a few were totally new for me.Never knew this would happen after 30 years, seeing things from a period i lived.Really great vid. thank you.
Sid did learn over time, but only Glen Matlock is recorded with any Sex Pistols material. Sid asked Lemmy, the bassist of Motörhead, to teach him how to play bass with the words, "I can't play bass," to which Lemmy replied "I know." By the time of the last Sex Pistols concert at the Winterland in San Francisco Sid was a reasonably competent bass player, as is evident in footage of the show.
MasterMarf That's a fucking urban myth. Read about him and his bass skills. Everyone said he couldn't play for shit because he didn't when he was on heroin, but before that he played fine. He learned how to play by dedicating on it 100% without sleeping while doing speed locked in a room only with his bass. Get your shit straight.
This still remains one of my all-time favourite Pistols songs. It’s so intense, so powerful. Glenn was so great for that band, wish he’d stayed with them. It’s also a pity this tune never made it onto Bollocks, it was only ever on rarities or compilation albums I’d see every now and again. Does anybody know when this first surfaced? Was it a B side or was it on a single release?
Glenn's lines were so damn groovy and tasteful. I always wonder what Bollocks would have sounded like with him on it. I think they would have lasted longer and written a lot more classic songs, but it's possible the entirety of punk would have gone in a slightly different direction; Jones' simplified bass lines on Bollocks, and Syd's complete lack of skill both had a huge influence on the burgeoning scene, and contributed to the idea of musicians not needing to be competent (or even be able to play their instrument) to form a band.
I have many times. I am in contact with Jones alot actually, I used to run one of his fan pages for him. I also have met Glen and talked to him for a bit with some drinks, great guys.
Sex Pistols Rules \m/ Sid Vicious is the greatest punk rock frontman of all times, the King of Punk Rock...Old School Punk Rules forever \m/ You will never be forgotten,Sid Vicious,God Bless you,Rock in peace
Glen wrote 50% of the lyrics, wrote most of the riffs, help Steve learn guitar. Weren't for Glen, would be no Sex Pistols. Sid was a poser, he was phony and not even Punk. He was a useless non talented junkie. He was unplugged/turned down 90% of the time, didn't play on Nevermind The Bollocks. Glen Matlock is a true punk.
it really is pointless to compare the pistols and the ramones.they were both pretty much 2 sides of the same coin.i personally do not feel that punk rock was EVER about love OR hate.just reality.
Reality??????????????? NO IT WAS ABOUT BEING ENOUGH OF A MAN TO STICK A NEEDLE IN YOUR ARM. And self destruction. It began as a negative trend born out of the beginning of rust in the rust belt. Iggy Pop was really the first. But the Dead Boys were the first of what is thought of as punk band. Pistols stole their style. Iggy Pop, Dead Boys, DEVO, Rubber City Rebels. Midwesterner went to NYC and played CBGB'S at the height of the scene. After the pistols it was dead and became NEW WAVE. Most of what think of as punk is really post punk Hardcore.
Lydon was so contemptuous of rock n roll and took the p*ss in the early days. He was serious about not being serious about coming across as a proper singer it gave him that unique antagonistic vocal timbre. I think he lost that total irreverence later with PIL and took on a more professional approach despite hamming it up at times
In his autobiography John expressed disdain for this song and I can't understand why. The opening guitar chords put me in mind of Jack Nicholson's axe slicing through the bathroom door in the 'The Shining'. It sounds fucking scary. It's great.
Probably because it was a cover of a British 60's Dave Berry song called No Lip Child - the original sounds NOTHING like this version but John would likely have objected based on the origin of the tune and the singer who originally sang it. No Lip is one of my all time fave Pistols covers.
He wasn´t an idiot and he had a bad childhood! He was a shy nice boy before this H and Nancy came into his life! RIP SID VICIOUS and in 3 Weeks it is his 36. day of his dead :-(
Transformaram a música, o punk e salvaram o rock n' roll, independente das merdas que venham a dizer de ser uma farsa ou outro lixo do gênero. Apenas The Clash, Stooges, Ramones e New York Dolls são páreo para eles.
Johnny changed the lyrics, Glen wanted to play about love and that stuff, but Rotten didn't care about anything..They were punk because of him, and Sid was the biggest fan of them, and later they asked him to join the band, he didn't know how to play, so he started to learning..later he met Nancy, and he fucked up his life...
People whined on and on about how they couldn't play , which wasn't entirely true since Jones was a good basic rock and roll guitarist . Either way , they were a great band with solid ideas which is what matters most .
Makes me remember how great the Pistols were. When you were 14 it was superb. Thamk god i didnt go to see them in the recent years to spoil the memories.. rotten is a bit of a clown now. Used to be my hero.
No the bands who broke the most ground never saw the light of day. The pistols just copied the Dead Boys style and played a more mainstream version of what was going on in the underground. By the time the pistols came on the scene punk was dead. New wave came, then splintered into many sub genres. By the time Throbbing Gristle came around New Wave had mutated. Synthpop, Industrial, New Romantics, etc.. After the mid 80's Grunge appeared. But there were things happening in the midwest as well as the west coast while that underground scene began to emerge into the mainstream.
F..king perfect, this song. I would say it's their best song ever, apart from No Fun, which is their best song but actually not theirs. So this is their best own song.
According to Steve Jones, Sid was so wasted at the Winterland show (as he was most of that misbegotten US tour) his bass wasn't even plugged in. I don't know what footage you're looking at, but Sid was barely pretending to play.
Im not sure if its Matlock or Sid playing the bass but either way every sane person knows that Glen Matlock was a big part of the Pistols and Sid came into the Pistols at the right time without contributing anything besides a punk rock look.
The Dead Kennedys. More talent, more humor, longer career, more albums, and equally as contriversial. The cops tried to close down their shows because of stage diving. That's when you know a band's got the "venom" you speak of. And, if it hadn't been for a few yankees called "Iggy and The Stooges" there would've been no Sex Pistols.
it is true, never mind the bollocks was too polished.if Dave Goodman would have been the producer of that album it would have been better, and the guitars would have sounded more aggressive.
Glen is a proper old school rock and roll bassist.
Absolute fucking killer riff from Jonesy. My favourite pistols song for the raw power of it
And glen on bass
I wish they would have recorded some more with john singing like this, I love his voice on this track so much
Loved this when I was a teenager and still do now
Some feelings are forever.
i don't care if the sex pistols supposedly couldn't play, this song is still a masterpiece.
they could play.....there's a RUclips video of Jones demonstrating the chords and solos etc to the songs in an interview, and how he used to practice for hours on end....on speed !

That Dave Berry cover was first released in 1979 on The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle.
Produced by Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Dave Goodman.

Classic early Johnny Pistols vocals before he changed his style for PIL. He never sounded the same since, even when the Pistols reformed.
Lydon was so contemptuous of rock n roll and took the p*ss in the early days. He was serious about not being serious about coming across as a proper singer it gave him that unique antagonistic vocal timbre. @evilforpresidendxDD i'd say it's glenn matlock rather than sid
And there was Glenn, waffling on about nice things like the Beatles-they probably should have kept him? He was a stabilizing force.
Courtney Love is in Sid & Nancy.
