- Members of the 594th Transportation Co. from Fort Campbell, KY train on how to operate the RQ-11 Raven which is a small hand thrown UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.) The UAV is used to help secure routes, by ensuring the areas ahead and behind are clear of threats. When the Raven lands on the ground it's designed to break apart into several pieces, which helps absorb the impact energy of the landing. Video by Staff Sgt. Daniel Symonds | Regional Command Southwest | Date: 02.22.2012

Remember, to get a UAS certified for govt or military spec, is a very expensive proposition.
This system is built to smash apart on landing, and go back together in a few minutes, carbon fibre, Kevlar, encrypted comms.
But admittedly yes this tech is over 5 years old.
Some clarification of what's going on here...
The price of this system is two-fold. One is that a single kit of this system contains not one, but two airframes, as well as all of its control components and optics. And two, is that the vast majority of the costs go into the optics themselves. You cannot hide from these things. Their thermal optics are still very effective, and they can zoom in very far. The newer versions of their optics are gimballed to allow the operator to pan their camera while in flight. The avionics system inside of this drone can maintain flight automatically while the operator utilizes the optics to spot things.
The setup of the entire system (when done by an experience detachment) can take anywhere between 10-15 minutes. What is shown here is a course of troops being trained on the system, and thus things are going to be slow as they learn the intricacies of the system. Putting these things together is not difficult, and once you've practiced a bunch (especially in the dark), it becomes an extremely simple process.
The Raven is intentionally designed to break apart for landing. There are a few benefits to that. The big one being speed. It is much simpler to land it directly in front of the detachment. The components that break apart are generally not far from the airframe and collecting them all is quite simple. The kit also comes with a radio locator in case it goes down outside of visual sight, so they can still easily locate the Raven. They simple reassemble airframe, do a quick pre-flight, and launch the drone again.
It is compact when disassembled, and it only weight 5 lbs. So this thing is very easy to pack around on operation. The quick setup time allows this drone to be quickly provide situational awareness to the troops on the ground. In my time in the field, whenever we've deployed these birds, we see instant results of enemy positions and call in for artillery to take care of them using the system's laser. There are tools onboard the Raven that allow for easy corrections to be made for artillery to very quickly zero in on their target and get accurate rounds down range.
For those bashing this system and comparing it to civilian RC planes, you really don't know what you're talking about and you are making an ass of yourself.
One of the best drone ever designed
If you read the instructions you would understand why it breaks apart when it lands, those ravens are actually great drones
They’re really not
About the landing, it is designed to land by stall and disasemble on impact. Much quicker than trying to land it like a conventional plane.
@BringTheRuckusCrew it's designed to do that. Breaking to pieces dampens the impact, and disassembling itself also helps the crew to pack it back together and gtfo fast if needed, but mainly it's to dampen the impact.
What, no lol
I fly these for the army and it's easier then what that video showed it to be.
+Thomas Metcalfe Do you fly as a hobby?
i will once i get one.. but as of now i only fly for the military
Thomas Metcalfe cool dude thanks for serving!
Yeah, they're really nice. I love the controller unit. I wish I had one. Way better than the chinese DJI helicopters.
Sorry man, but this look like a Toy are they any good? Bc I bet they spend millions of dollars to come up with this
It's just like the Cox PT-19 U-Control trainer we used to fly as kids - the wing was held on with a rubberband to protect it during crashes.
HobbyKing Special and a can of gray primer paint,,,,viola! Is the landing breaking apart feature to lessen the learning curve of landing it properly or what?
too long and too many preparation...
bf4 ramming machine
nope
Yes it actually is and it's called a suav
200 of these UAV are ordered by Indian army
Yes bro 🇮🇳🚩
nice landing
4:22 YESSS!!
This is the standard landing for the the Raven in theatre.
It is meant to absorb the landing impact by coming apart.
It goes back together easy enough.
Nice. I could send this across town then when the mission is finished stick the landing in my front yard. A lot of fixed wings need to much space, this is perfect for urban use.
How much does it cost?
In case 4 UAV 2 GCS or 2UAV 1GCS
So many of you pretend to be an RC expert, but you guys really have no idea what it takes to design one for MILITARY. These things should withstand nonstop abuse and should still deliver what it should for many month in all kinds of bad environments, not to mention bad pilot skill...the breakaway landing is an excellent design. Also note the ground support and communication equipment. Yes, the thing probably cost quite a lot more than what it could have really cost, but enough with HobbyKing...heh.
that looks like and APC-E prop, aha
The only reason why I search this up because my dad used to fly drones in the army

Its tracker tho
Battlefield 4 brought me here.

What is that sound coming from the computer?
Мы такой самолёт ещё в 89 году на авиамодельном кружке делали. Летал хорошо. Бедные американские военные, на ноутбук защиту от солнечного света из коробки сделали
That thing is definitely not going to sneak up on anyone.
Medium altitude survailance
There are covert Ops with the Raven
That piece of shit cost, $35,000? I seen people make better out of insulating foam from the hardware store.
Fleece Johnson WHAT!!!! I can build way better for less than $1000!!!! Heck the drone I just build cost $800 and it look way better than this trash!! The dam thing broke into pieces on landing!! If they designed it that way that is awful!!! They could have spent an extra $2.00 bucks and put some wheels or landing skids!!
rAdiant Jet Its suppose to break apart
RutgersPride27
That is bad design!!
Not at all. There is no need for wheels. Breaking apart absorbs the impact of landing. Also it allows the soldiers to easily transport it. It only takes several minutes to put it together. There is a reason 24 countries in the world use it with over 19,000 built.
+RutgersPride27 Are you fucking kidding me? My wing on a 5200 mah lipo flies for damn near an hour. I have full GPS through pixhawk where it will autonomously fly through way points that I can program. On 433mhz I can go 21 kilometers with full video. It's a piece of shit, and there is 19,000 shit hawks out there flying in the sky. Also I've only paid about $400 USD for mine.
I bet these things cost more than my car. I swear if you slap the word Military on any piece of equipment it increases it's value by 500%
Price?
Can it roadkill people?
u'd better make RC fly bomb with camera, so that pin point enemy location precisely and runto it to bomb
Hey my old job fuck i miss that old peice of plastic tho i didn't have as many people when i used it must be for the showing of it usually the squad sits up a defensive prim id check and double check systems and equipment to run it then i had a squad mate hold and id throttle up and he would launch it also.... we never crashed ours that was very frowned upon in my unit id bring it to a glide and have a squad mate usually the same guy would run along with it and catch it then we would break it down and box it then move out... but yeah fuck i miss that job it was fun
The price tag includes the whole system (UAS, not just just the UAV)
+SgtRic58 Even then With a good screen, 433mhz, or fuck even the cross fire system you could do better on a 5 watt 900mhz. Although I will give you the benefit of the doubt that the link is either encrypted or spread spectrum. still that aside... its a turd with wings...
Remember, to get a UAS certified for govt or military spec, is a very expensive proposition. But admittedly yes this tech is over 12 years old.
@@SgtRic58 wouldn't it have been almost 12 years old? came out in 2003?
Sam Tate If you notice, this post is very old.
@@SgtRic58 no i know, just it's a real old drone. but i wouldn't say it's a turn with wings. it was probably incredibly technologically advanced when it came out though
Thats still quite an advanced drone, could be a lot simpler
Haha. Too funny. We civilians flying circles around these guys. I can see them being mortared in the time it takes to throw one into the air, and for $35,000 its landing kinda hard.
35k for ONE ? most RC people could build at least 35 for that price - with drogue chute assisted soft landing instead of stall crashing
For 1k Ill make it fly itself. lol
gotta love the army, if it cost $5 to build, the army will buy it for half a million, and say it's top of the line equipment. also anybody know what the red dot thing is under the ir flag? never seen that before.
KitariFox it's a combat application tourniquet. One of the many things to carry when deployed.
4:22 yeshhh
They bought it from H*bbyKing... LOL
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
American motor, still kept going. Chinese or Japanese would have died of heart attack before the crash.
I need one, where can I get one lol
Isn’t that a emp drone I don’t think that’s a UAV

Hahahaha😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Bruhhh
How much of a beating can these things take. Surely landing it by intentionally smashing it into the ground aint helping its longevity
What a shame ..it fell down at the end
welcome to silk road rush
a million thumbs up for the troops..but not on that raven..battery HOG!
nice landing 5:50
Charlie Foxtrot... 🤣🙈👏
YAAASSSS!
It looks like a MultiPlex Easy Star. Lol You can do exactly what this does for under 1000 now with the same range and flight time.
Frank Pirolo drop it to $500 same range and flight time
LMAO, they should hire me for this stuff. they have no idea what they're doing... :)
All I can say is if I was their only uav pilot I would win wars for these poor basterds. The time it takes them to pre-launch fly and with that landing :/. I think the Americans need to re-evaluate their skills and training.
The call of duty emp drone
Hey I have one of these! It cost me 45 dollars on bangood 😂
But bloked all bag washinton
For that closed all widows contact washinton we onle we watsh hir me sem like u how tha control hir onle me for that lesn onle to me for we hav fix abut wat tha helcoptar hav in tha army
so you need a team to fly that bird? looks harder then i thought...
No this is just training. It easy for one man to put together out of backpack, toss it, and fly with that little hand controller alone without the tripod antenna or view shield like that.
"Avião" dos Irmãos Wright
Just fkn throw it sarnt damn y’all are just wingin it at this point
35k to build????.. motor like 150 bucks,, batteries like 200 or so good ones.... uva's fuselage 20 bucks..... servos 40 bucks...... wiring 2 dollars...... cameras and the rc module... 200-300 bucks.. im not even close to 35k and with with less than 1 k i could build a better uav than this..
motor $15, batteries 100, body 150, servo 60, Cameras gear and auto nav 300
my skyhunter flys better than that over priced pile of shit. also love the shitty launch thows
shadowsrwolf yeah the way they first run a couple of meters and then launch it...
+YellowBlue RC well i bet you would look like a fuckwit on the battlefield, wouldn't you?
+YellowBlue RC there's are difference from being able to handle a gun to being able to handle yourself in a firefight
YellowBlue RC and whats wrong with how he flew it?
in a combat situation there won't be any time to play with toys
В боевой обстановке это очень нужный аппарат! И это не игрушка ! В Сирии русские применяют дроны на много современные!
Bloked all bag amerca and u can onle do wat in ur bag
Hunter Killer inbound
Should of bought a DJI Mavic Pro.

Can I roadkill noobs with this? :D
Huh just like my marriage......

Greaaat!!!!!+++:))))
Nice!!!!!+++:))))
and They are protecting USA :P Polish army lost control on their drone hahaha and they was searching for it for three days :P braking apart on landing is ridiculous :)
The landing is not good for the prop. It needs to balance again are changed every time if it hits the ground
Nope
Cool!!!!!+++:))))
Very smooth landing. Reminds me of 9/11
