Nobody ever took charges from him, nobody dared to stand there in front of him when he was rampaging down the court, that was just suicide. MJ doesn’t care to do interviews like that or talk about other players much and will never be a social media dude like that. I think him letting others do all of the talking is seen by many as not respectful of his peers but I think that he did all of his talking on the court, gave plenty of compliments, and made enough public appearances in his prime to his own satisfaction.

I watched almost every Jazz game throughout the 90's, I lived near SLC in the mid-late 90's. Malone was the best power forward ever when he retired, I'd give Duncan the nod now, but if you replace Malone with prime Duncan that Jazz team that made back to back finals still doesn't win a title over MJ. Malone's mid-range game is underrated, people seldom talk about how good his turn-around jumper was. He made a ton of 15 - 18 foot jump shots back in the day.
They dominated the Bulls. Won both regular season games. Only team ever blew out the Bulls in the playoffs. Jordan had to push off to get that last winning shot off. Happens all the time, but to have to cheat as the final play of your career. Shows how good the Jazz were.

Karl Malone and John Stockton were a very fine duo. The Jazz of the 80s and 90s, with Malone, Stockton, Mark Eaton, and Jeff Hornacek at the center, was a really fascinating powerhouse team.
I always respected the powerful simplicity of some of the things Malone did. I'm thinking most of the way he ran the floor hard every single time. He was always in shape to run hard the entire game. He just kept at it and wore one guy down and then wore down another. There's no mystery about it but how many guys do it?
He was trash. Him and the starting center is why they never won anything. All horny could do was wipe his face and make free throws. A second scorer at SG like Richmond would of put them over the top maybe
@@lukesmith9692 I've said it several times, if you replace Malone with prime Duncan during those title runs the Jazz still don't win a title over MJ. @@RiffMajestic their bench was mostly defense. Good role players but if they traded Jeff or Jeff for Mitch Richmond or Glen Rice and for center keep ostertag on the bench and trade mike brown and something for starting center Shawn Bradley. Horny could stroke the three and free throws! Bryant Russel wasn’t bad either and Ostertag took up space and could rebound. Honestly that Jazz era is THE BEST team to never win a championship

Oh Rodman was a genius when it came to match ups on the court, he did his homework for that. His personality just gave off a “idgaf I’m not trying but I’m still gonna get 20 rebounds” when in reality he was constantly analyzing how he could improve
Rodman was super intelligent and pretty strong but he really couldn’t do anything with Malone. If you watch the Bulls wins over Utah you’ll see what I mean. Everyone just assumes Rodman shut him down or something but hat def wasn’t the case. Go watch.
Timmy was a power forward “SLASH” center. However, Karl Malone was straight-up power forward and those muscles on his shoulders and arms, that guy was just brutal and had so much power in him - had great battles with my Bulls with Rodman. I think Timmy is the best power forward ever, but there is a case for Karl Malone, too. Saw glimpses of McHale, and too young to know Bob Pettit. But Karl Malone was such a dominant power forward in the 90s.
TD is a top-10 CENTER because he was (outside of the minority of his career with Robinson) the Spurs' primary rim-protector, the definition of a center's role (offensively, both C and PF can be the primary post-scorers). The "Duncan is greatest PF of all-time" is to pander to his era. Not all eras can have a "greatest " of all time. Right now, the absurd false pandering is with Lebron is the G.O.A.T. marketing ploy. The reality is that the golden era of the NBA (80's/ 90's) not only had the most balanced competition, it also had the greatest SG (MJ), PG (Magic or Stockton), SF (Bird), PF (Malone), and C (Hakeem) of all time, though valid arguments could be made for Kareem/Wilt/Russell for Greatest Center. The 00's had top-8 positional players of all time (C: Duncan/Shaq; PF: Garnett; SF: LBJ; SG: Kobe; PG: Kidd/CP3), just not THE best.
@@QuestionEverything562, TD's entire 19-year career represents him, not cherry-picking whatever period of time we feel like choosing to fit the narrative.
@@mickeylee2624 No, his BEST years were as a PF, just because he played one more year in a positionless era as a center, does not make him remembered as a true center. Stop the cap, Tim Duncan was a PF for the first 9 years of his career, that means when there were real centers in the league and he was in his PRIME. He could afford to play center because he was the last of his kind from like 2007 to 2016, a real paint presence/post up big. He was 6'11, and no great centers were around anymore besides D-12 during that stretch. Shaq was done after 2008.
Tim Duncan was a **center** who often guarded PF's to keep him on the floor longer/out of foul trouble, and because Robinson was there throughout Duncan's early years to pick up the heavy load guarding opposing centers. And you know Duncan was a center because centers are the ones who guarded Duncan most of the time, especially when Robinson wasn't on the floor. Duncan wasn't better than either Karl Malone or Kevin McHale except when it came to defense. When the refs called it straight (without Shaq getting too much star-privilege) Duncan did a very good job guarding Shaq, better than any actual PF that ever played in the NBA could have. You can't teach height, and there were things Duncan could do on defense that McHale and Malone just couldn't do that Duncan could. Namely, play Shaq straight up and bother his shot enough to make him miss. But, I would posit that both Malone and McHale were more sly on defense, and better in the clutch in different ways. Malone, in particular, was good at stripping the ball as a player would attempt to raise the ball to shoot, especially near the end of games. McHale was better at forcing opposing players into double teams and traps, and was better at blocking quick players (often from behind) than Duncan was. Duncan was slow, but benefitted from playing in the slowest era of the NBA: 1996-2006. He benefited from having an utterly selfless bad-back Robinson tutor, cultivate, and compliment his game - ironic, considering that in Robinson's early years he was probably the fastest 7 footer of all time. The Big Fundamental would have been very good in any era. But his niche was the era he played in. In any other era his relative slowness would have been exploited more and on offense would've been hampered more by guys like Eaton, Donaldson, Kareem, Moses Malone, Tree Rollins, Herb Williams, Artis Gilmore, Nate Thurmond, Wilt, Russell, Smits, Mutombo, young Shaq, Mourning, Bol, Laimbeer, Bob Lanier, Parish, Ewing, Robinson, Olajuwon, etc. Instead he faced twilight versions of some of them and an era where Dwight Howard (6'10 with his shoes on), Ben Wallace (6'9") and Yao Ming (also slow) were the only centers other than Shaq worth mentioning as serious competition. (I would throw Shawn Bradley in there as a notable defender in Duncan's peak era, but the league/refs didn't like the guy for whatever reason and neutralized him in most games). Also, when considering the 80s-90s, you have to factor in a whole lot of names of big men who were big "what ifs" due to injuries, diseases, or off court issues. Jeff Ruland, Ralph Sampson, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, Rony Seikaly, and Pervis Ellison are just a few. Others who did make a name for themselves played hampered by injuries or diseases most or all of their careers: Ewing, Smits, and Mourning are three obvious examples. Then you have guys like Benoit Bejamin, Kevin Duckworth, and Arvydas Sabonis who were well known to be extremely highly skilled players with short shelf lives or only spurts where they were able to give their best. From the '80s-early'90s there were a ton of very talented big men who came and went. Many names most fans wouldn't remember right now. Even guys who often came off the bench like Mark West, Michael Cage, Elden Campbell, James Edwards, Chris Dudley, and Bill Cartwright were solid defenders and/or scorers. The era Duncan played in was severely lacking in big men of even mediocre talent. Kevin Garnett was the best player 6'10 or taller in that era and he was an actual power forward. So who guarded Duncan of note, besides a handful of players? Who did Duncan guard of note besides a handful of players? Duncan's career stats make him look better than he was because of the era he played in and his durability. League-wide star privilege, which began in the 90s, ramped up throughout his career. Although because of the way he played he didn't necessarily benefit as much as some other "stars", he still did benefit from it, including in a macro-sense as the league grew increasingly soft on defense pertaining to star players. McHale never saw such privilege. Malone only saw it in the second half of his career. Duncan's career was surrounded by it. He never had the touch, intellect, skill, or the athleticism to be a top tier player of all time. He did have enough skill, stamina, intellect, athleticism, and size to be very good in any era though, and capitalized on being in the right era at the right time.
Carl Malone was probably the greatest pure power forward of all time, and his team was easily good enough to win a championship or two or 3. The only reason he didn’t is because of one man, Michael Jordan. Same reason so many other superstars didn’t win that should have
I guess Robert Horry is better than Karl Malone according to Eddie Johnson because Horry has 7 rings. The GOAT debate should be split. Some people are in the Goat discussion because of the rings they have and others because of their personal skills alone, and I think they should be 2 separate debates.
Rings are irrelevant to discussions of which players were better. The only reason to bring up rings is as an excuse to disregard otherwise obvious truths that contradict one's preferred position. I.e. the elephant in the room being the star privilege afforded to Michael Jordan and others by the league/refs.
@@merlball8520 Agreed. I think they also bring rings into the debate because they can't debate about rings alone because there is no debate: Bill Russel wins. Even refs at the high school level will privilege the "stars" with calls. That's a great point that I agree should be discussed a lot more than it is. A probable reason we don't hear it brought up a lot is because a lot of the people talking about it on the national level are/were players themselves and got favorable calls lol
Great video. I saw Malone`s career. All those former players summarized it very well. He was a truck who could pass through you and shoot all over the place (not 3pts though). Could pass, could defend. He just didnt have 3, 4 HoFs like others had. And as much as I love Stockton he was past prime in those 2 years in Finals. Malone clearly deserved those 2 MVPs doing a lot with way less. Jazz 3rd best player and 4th best player were Jeff Hornacek (already old couldnt defend) and B Russell. Bulls had arguably best defender in history in Malone`s neck and Toni Kukoc. Imagine if MJ would act like Lebron in 2011. I wish.
Not a fan of Karl Malone but this one is going to be very interesting.. I can't think of a harder matchup than this one. Stockton helped him a lot as well. wish this one was a little longer.
I have a question and I'm open to different perspectives on it. But is it fair to judge who's better than who using team success as a determining factor? I think there's a line to be drawn with that as the better individual may have had a not so good team around him?
no💯put it like this if u at la fitness picking teams are u gonna pick the guy who has been on the winning team but not really making a impact maybe 2 or 3 ppg or would u pick the guy who lost but he scored 17 n he play defense💯winning especially a nba championship is a TEAM accomplishment with a lot of factors like injuries matchups etc. theres plenty of examples where the best PLAYER on the court loses to the better TEAM💯
@@waff6ix to be honest I think championships get brought up unnecessarily during these debates. Championships are important but like I said there's a line to be drawn with that.
@@ivanlewellen1769 I don't see how that would have worked in their half court sets. Malone and Barkley played a very similar half court game in terms of being low post scorers. Barkley was not a spotup shooter, and a bad defender. Barkley was an alpha, same with Malone, I think they would have annoyed each other. Malone was all about work ethic and staying in the most rigorous physical shape every off-season, whereas Barkley almost never practised, ate horribly, nor cared to workout much. I think it wouldn't have worked. The Jazz were really missing a good center for most of Stockton and Malone's 18 year tenure in Utah.

Duncan better than Malone because Duncan won championships? How about we put 97 and 98 bulls on each of Duncan's teams finals championships and see if he still wins them.
It’s possible had Malone stayed in Utah just two more years he could’ve realistically become the all time leading scorer. His turnaround J was just as deadly and unstoppable as Jordan. Was such an amazing offensive force for someone who didn’t shoot threes, and mostly relied on his midrange game.
When the Jazz finally brought in Jeff Hornacek and made the finals, they ran into the Bulls with Jordan both times. Otherwise, the Jazz have 2 banners in the rafters. You put Garnett on any team and he gives tremendous value that’s why he is the best. Duncan had better isolation game and post defense but that’s it.
Everybody has the right to their own opinion. My opinion is Karl was the best Power Forward of all time. I followed the Jazz for a long time up through their two finals appearances against the Bulls. I like teams that are the underdogs but bust their ass every game and have talent. Jerry Sloan was a fundamentals coach, which I think hurt them at times, but he was very smart and dedicated. Karl was not only talented but busted his ass working out and after every game would not have a bad thing to say. Just said they played hard and the other team did and let it go at that. I think that hurt his legacy because people always love the trash talkers who diss on other people. John Stockton was amazing. Jeff Hornacek would make these unbelievable shots. For those saying he didn't win any championships so he's not that great: No one would have beaten the Bulls in those 6 finals. The Bulls also kept some great teams in the East from reaching the finals. And this is coming from someone who couldn't stand the Bulls back then. So I'm not a fanboy. If you weren't around back then, and didn't watch every game all season long for that period, you will never understand it. You can watch all the stuff on RUclips you want to. I watched almost every NBA game for a good 10 year period or more and they were not going to be denied by anyone!
My dad & Karl were tight business partners. We know him quite well. Personally he made questionable decisions... we all do. As a HOF PF. He is #2 on my list: 1) Duncan 2) Malone 3) KG 4) Barkley 5) Dirk Any of these dudes can be 2-5.
I pretty much agree with that top 5, I'd probably put Barkley at 3. KG and Dirk are razor close, KG was better defensively and rebounding the ball but I'd have to give Dirk the nod on Offense. I also think Dirk was better in winning his title. KG had Pierce and Allen, Dirk didn't have that level of talent around him.
@JoylessTunic738 I love Dirk, I probably would give him the edge over KG mostly because I think him leading the Mavs to a championship was better than when KG won his, Dirk was more clutch as well. I'll put Dirk at #4 and KG at #5. Still think it's really close between them two. The whole top 5 is pretty damn close in my opinion. By the way, Malone also had well over 30,000 points, just under 15,000 rebounds, 5,000+ assists, 2,000+ steals and 1100+ blocks.
Malone is the best power forward I've seen since watching the NBA from the mid 80s. I would take him over Duncan any day because he was more versatile, a much better athlete and played better defense. I would call Duncan more of a center anyway. Barkley wasn't a power forward he really was a small forward.
Jordan is smart. He never talks up other players because he wants to be #1. The person who praises his competition the most is Magic Johnson. Nobody ever considers him GOAT because he says everybody else is better than him. Jordan was smart never to do something like that. Nobody can find film of Jordan saying great things about other players in which he devalues himself. Jordan knows he is the greatest. No need to falsely admire another player to make himself look humble.
He played vs Magic , Bird, and MJ and gave them hell. Tim Duncan couldn't beat those guys. The facts are simple: Karl Malone is THE GREATEST PF of ALLTIME
Many said he'd been injury free all throughout his career except his last season in LA. But it wasn't necessarily true. The truth was he played anyway no matter he got injured or not. Everytime the Jazz team doctor tried to X-ray his injured body, he refused and said he would go out there and play anyway. He puts more lay-ups and jumpshots when he was ankle injured. He knew how to still score when he was not in 100%. (Well, Derrek Coleman did not want to play because he got broken toe-nail.) Too bad Malone got worst extensor tendon injuries on 2 finders of his shooting hands during the Finals with Chicago. He just taped them and went out to play. But his shooting percentage including the crunch free throws could not be the same. Still no complaint. No execuse. He went to the Bulls bus to congratulate them. This says what kind of guy he really was.
I saw Clyde Drexler being interviewed on the GOAT the other day, and he argued for my position. It's the wrong question. Wilt, Bill, Kareem, Magic, Karl, Tim, J, Steph, MJ, Lebron -- they are all in the discussion and they all enjoyed advantages and obstacles that make the debate pointless. Is it championships? Well then it's Bill. Points and Rebounds? Flair? There are a lot of guys I rate very very high who never get in the discussion and others who are clearly overrated.
The only really dirty foul Karl did was on Isiah Thomas. And than he got stuff from Kobe because of his wife. She was flirting with him to get back at Kobe for that Denver incident. He is in the top 4 power forwards of all time. And look where he is at on the scoring list.
Yeah, MJ was the MVP every year he played. They kinda had to give it to someone else at some point, so a lot of runners-up got MVP while he was around.

TD wasn't no true power forward he was more like a small forward
Don’t sing his praises, he doesn’t deserve it.
They dominated the Bulls. Won both regular season games. Only team ever blew out the Bulls in the playoffs. Jordan had to push off to get that last winning shot off. Happens all the time, but to have to cheat as the final play of your career. Shows how good the Jazz were.
Duncan was as valuable. He was a finesse forward. Different skills.

Karl Malone and John Stockton were a very fine duo.
The Jazz of the 80s and 90s, with Malone, Stockton, Mark Eaton, and Jeff Hornacek at the center, was a really fascinating powerhouse team.
Hornbeck didn't play center
Not did he play with Eaton
I'd go with Spud Webb at the center. Opponents would be bamboozled.
Karl Malone, Kevin McHale, Tim Duncan, Charles, Bob Pettit… I’d take any of them.
Bob pettit is so underrated
Karl Malone was a beast. His mid-range game was underrated. He was pretty much money from 15-18 ft. A truly devastating player.
I was there when he got his mvp. So glad I got to see his career in Utah. Just dominated.
I always respected the powerful simplicity of some of the things Malone did. I'm thinking most of the way he ran the floor hard every single time. He was always in shape to run hard the entire game. He just kept at it and wore one guy down and then wore down another.
There's no mystery about it but how many guys do it?
Jeff Hornacek was an amazing 3 point shooter and a great addition to the duo.
But Jordan is the best all time. #1
Horny could stroke the three and free throws! Bryant Russel wasn’t bad either and Ostertag took up space and could rebound. Honestly that Jazz era is THE BEST team to never win a championship

Watching this makes me believe that Dennis rodman was a genius player. Karl respected Dennis.
Go watch.
Was my favourite player. Strong, fast, good at both ends. One fault was his shooting could be streaky at times.
@@mickeylee2624 in Duncan's best years, he was a PF.
Same reason so many other superstars didn’t win that should have
And Dennis Rodman.

I wish.

Karl Malone was definitely a great player for his era.
Best Power Forward of all time.
Utah had a deep team vs the bulls, they just did play good enough to beat them at the time.
Tim Duncan is the greatest power forward of all time
Karl Malone was great but his personality people have said he didn't know what no meant.
He played vs Magic , Bird, and MJ and gave them hell. Tim Duncan couldn't beat those guys. The facts are simple: Karl Malone is THE GREATEST PF of ALLTIME
Karl Malone would the all time greatest....but he never got a ring so....He's still a beast....
Many said he'd been injury free all throughout his career
except his last season in LA.
(Well, Derrek Coleman did not want to play because he got broken toe-nail.)
Too bad Malone got worst extensor tendon injuries on 2 finders of his shooting hands during the Finals with Chicago.
Knowing what we know now about Karl Malone you should have probably skipped this one.
Thank you! He really shouldn’t be given such recognition imo.
Popular and Delivered
If he didn’t get hurt 😔 in 2004 that a different series Detroit vs Lakers.
John stockton was just as much as important as karl was for utah... if it had been another PG, it wouldnt have been as great as a duo
Karl malone was bad ass.
The only really dirty foul Karl did was on Isiah Thomas. And than he got stuff from Kobe because of his wife. She was flirting with him to get back at Kobe for that Denver incident. He is in the top 4 power forwards of all time. And look where he is at on the scoring list.
@@kennethbailey6634 He impregnated a 14 year old girl while he attended college…
the best pf
Mj deserved 96-97 mvp....
Yeah, MJ was the MVP every year he played. They kinda had to give it to someone else at some point, so a lot of runners-up got MVP while he was around.
no he didnt. Karl had a better season
@@jrsmith1998 don't do drugs, Kiddos...
Finals MVP is better than regular season MVP
Nah.
If he touches you with that elbow. Harden will be in comatose.
excluding Rodman
Karl malone was a beast but most importantly very good with kids
Dude, not funny.
Karl and Lebron are arguably the most durable star players of all time
Who's better Tim Duncan or Karl Malone??? Dennis Rodman.....nah for real....The Mailman
Jordan took it personal
