When Orvis Community Leader Davis James and his wife, Margaret, adopted a stray dog named Nyla, they had no idea what an amazing companion she would be for all their outdoor adventures. When a serious health scare threatened the dog's future, the way she rebounded provided important lessons about resilience and the healing effects of time spent in nature. Although Nyla's illness was traumatic, she and her family have come out of it with stronger, deeper bonds and a desire to make the most of their time together.

Nyla is my hero. I have /had 5 little girls all rescues (long hair dachshunds) ….I lost Millie to canine dementia. It was heartbreaking to see her lose herself to the disease. She with the others carried me through four years of fighting cancer. The four continue to take care of my. The eldest, Shelby is now 19 and still loves her walks, races around for dinner and insists we are all in bed by 8. The four are my family.
