I caught about a 9lb bull trout last summer when I was targeting cutthroat. Man, that was exciting! Luckily, I was using my 6-weight for streamers and not the 4-weight.
Montana is like a fishermans paradise. I spent many vacations up there and in Idaho doing just what you're doing and there is nowhere like it. Really enjoy your vids. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Great footage of my home state and glad to see you showed how hard it can be just getting to the water. I have had to pass on more than a few great looking streams that were too steep, brushy and bear sign everywhere...Thanks for sharing..
I aways enjoy everyone of your videos. Thankyou for sharing ur adventures with all of your dedicated viewers. Your trips are so inspirational , they set dreams in the hearts and minds of many people . Planning , hard work and dedication run deep in your life. It shows. Thanks again.
That stream was spectacular. I'd love to fish it, but I'm too scared of bears. ( I've had some uncomfortable encounters with grizzlies while fishing/camping in MT. ) Thanks for posting this video.
I've seen grizzlies, coastal wolves and cougars fishing the upper Squamish in BC. Never had a bad experience. Sorry you've had some uncomfortable moments!
@@Malcolm_Q Some time ago I was driving toward Mammoth in YNP with a friend. We saw park rangers on horseback at one of the pullouts. A medical helicopter was just taking off. When I got back home, The ticker at the bottom of the news screen confirmed when my paranoid mind suspected. A Belgian tourist was attacked by a grizzly in the park near the location where we saw the activity. He was evacuated by helicopter. Not sure what happened to him. I had a more personal incident on the Stillwater River in Montana, but was not attacked.
Fishing in Grizzley country certainly puts an extra excitement and wanting to look up and scan area as you fish, I feel more confident carrying a side arm.
That initial treck down was steep! That's crazy how that bull was just chilling right next to you...that's nuts! Those guys probably recognized you...dang RUclipsRS! Lol ;))
Drew, I think you need a buddy to fish with. That scene at 2:30 when you were hiking reminds me of a story and I am sure there have been many of us who have been there. It is always good to have someone with you or hopefully you carry a radio. I met an old guy fishing once and we started talking and when I was just about to leave, he asked do you want to fish with me, I know all the good holes. Of course I was not going to say no. By the end of the day, with great fishing of course, he finally admitted to me that his wife told him to never fish alone again. He had gone off and went fishing and was not found for several day after breaking his leg. So now when he goes, he always has a fishing partner. It was a fantastic day and a friend in my book forever. There is a morel of story in here somewhere. Great Vid but give me a shout when your in Idaho again...
Drew, did a week long fly fishing trip to Montana over summer 2022 and happened to notice I camped in the absolute exact same spot at minute 10:14 in early September, I parked my truck in the same area under the trees and all! Same bull trout experience except he swallowed my cutt whole. The bull somehow didn’t break me off but I had to unfortunately snip the line as he already swallowed the cutt with my fly still in its mouth. He put up 0 fight probably because he couldn’t move after swallowing a 12-13” fish. Craziest fishing moment in my life and for sure the biggest bull let alone fish I had ever seen, had to be 40”. Crazy coincidence, one of the most beautiful places I’ve fished to date, glad you got to experience it!
This strech of water is some of my favorite to fish. Was a couple hundred yards down stream from where you were fishing and saw about a 32in bull just chilling in the depths. Cant wait until their population bounce back and we can start targeting them. Haven't seen any grizzlies in that area but theres a ton and its only a matter of time.
Montana!.......wow!.....I used to frequent the Bozeman area with my dad back in the day....the Yellowstone, Gallatin and the Madison are amazing but they see alot of fishemen.....we'd head up towards the Ennis/Sheridan area and hit the Wise, Ruby and Big Hole......if you get to the Livingston area Dan Baileys Fly Shop is a must see......REALLY digging the underwater dips with the camera!!! .......stay safe Drew and keep them coming!
I've caught many bull trout on the Squamish in BC; the largest one being 29". Then, when fly fishing the Old Man in AB with my daughter, I caught a 30" bull trout. That was an epic day! 😁 Bull trout are a great heartpounding catch anywhere.
4.21.2023 I'm in Idaho Falls and it has been a crazy winter. It hasn't been warm enough for snow to melt up high, and we keep getting more. Every river and stream is going to be high for a while.
Welcome to Montana, if I was up where you I would have talked to you. They must be foreigners. not from Montana. That bull trout was waiting for you to catch and release his dinner, a small cutthroat. Don't worry so much about bears, this time of the year I think they are up higher. Although I always am warry of berry bushes around streams. Enjoy enjoy!!!!!!!!!
I love that water color. I've never fished that stream, I fish further south and east of it, but my first day fishing that area a 30"+ post spawn bull trout got wrapped around my right leg by the current while I was casting to 10 - 12" cutties. Exciting times, this was back when you could target them (although no one really did. Thanks for posting great fly fishing videos. Helpful hint, find a stream with beaver ponds and be amazed.

Drew Great video. Montana fisherman here and I know where you were fishing. I was fishing this creek about 10 years ago by myself and stopped to have lunch on a big Boulder. A blonde female grizzly came running down the creek across from me and ran full speed right past me. It happened so fast I barely had time to think about my bear spray! What a rush. I have hammered the Cutts there with a black #16 midge dropper.

That was beautiful clear water and the fishing was top notch. Well done Drew. What fly pattern did you use to catch those fish? I presume it's not a military secret.
I do, that's my typical nymph rig for Arkansas and anytime not summer. Summer out west is dry or hopper time...I go to take advantage of fish that are willing to eat off the surface when bugs are hatching or terrestrials are present. I add a dropper for those that aren't aggressive. It's a short season...the other 10 months are double nymph rig time. Given that you were fishing in Montana, the limited range of bull trout, the season, and the massive kype.....I don't think the bull trout was looking to eat the cutthroat you had on your line....more likely it was staging to spawn and becoming very territorial.
Sketchy approach to the stream. Steep and rocks like marbles. I hope you always tell someone where you are in the event you fall and injure yourself...
I guess you learn to deal with it, but trying to fish while looking over my shoulder for griz seems to me akin to keeping a lookout for the property owner on private land. I did the latter once, and it ruined the whole experience for me. It wasn't worth the worry.
Well, a good excuse to call home: "Honey, I lost the Idaho footage and I need to go back to re-film those spots, so I gotta add another week to the trip…
Hey drew, as close as that bull got to you, you should have tried to net him,at least for a good look at him,and a picture. Beautiful stream, enjoyed watching.
That would have been a bad idea. Bull trout are a threatened species in Montana and harassing the fish in that manner could have been punishable by a hefty fine.
Yea, I was warned several times by locals that game wardens were always on the look for anyone messing or targeting bulls in MT. Told they'd hide on ridges and scope the waters and told not to fish white streamers! It was super cool to see so I feel like I got my experience!
That Bull is probably still in there thinking about you!! What a fish!!!

I guess you learn to deal with it, but trying to fish while looking over my shoulder for griz seems to me akin to keeping a lookout for the property owner on private land. I did the latter once, and it ruined the whole experience for me. It wasn't worth the worry.
I actually just got that rod. Which line did you pair with it? I’m struggling picking one. PS, awesome videos.
I run SA amplitude infinity on my h3f 4wt and been happy with it.
@@LooknFishy nice. Im looking at the SA Amplitude Andro. Are you using a 4wt line or 5wt version?
@@benlopez4860 4wt
@@LooknFishy good to know. Thanks again for taking the time.
wait.... i need closure! you find the SD card???
I definitely did wasn't moving until I found it lol!
When I drop a fly and can’t find it I start thinking how long it took to tie. I stop looking at the halfway mark 😅
@@axelschug3451 by this logic, his weeks worth of footage would have forced him to look for 3.5 days or 84 hours :)
Well, a good excuse to call home: "Honey, I lost the Idaho footage and I need to go back to re-film those spots, so I gotta add another week to the trip…
That drop down into the steam looked super sketchy
It was but I found an easier way about a mile down...just didn't know the first day lol!
i woulda swtiched to a streamer right away and try it
Hey drew, as close as that bull got to you, you should have tried to net him,at least for a good look at him,and a picture. Beautiful stream, enjoyed watching.
That would have been a bad idea. Bull trout are a threatened species in Montana and harassing the fish in that manner could have been punishable by a hefty fine.
@@flyguy2021 oops sorry, didn't know that. Thanks for the info. Love flyfishing for trout, I would never do anything to hurt the resource.
Yea, I was warned several times by locals that game wardens were always on the look for anyone messing or targeting bulls in MT. Told they'd hide on ridges and scope the waters and told not to fish white streamers! It was super cool to see so I feel like I got my experience!
I’m sorry, I love ya, but you sure take some serious chances to get to the water, I don’t know what to say except please be careful.
Wait, you didn’t throw streamers at that bull trout?
Bull Trout in Montana require a permit to fish and it’s only during a short season. Not enough of them to let people target them all the time
Illegal to target bull trout in all but 4 waters (river and lakes) in MT. And u gotta have a fwp catch card on you. This stream isn't one of the 4.
@@LooknFishy that’s what I figured. Thought this was still Idaho and wasn’t sure of their regulations. That thing was a HOSS!
