Honestly the line "why not speak up against how I and so many others feel" is what made me think Ingrid grew as a person. My interpretation of that line is that Ingrid doesn't want people to repeat that same prejudice mentality and their ending card pretty much said their friendship helped ease the tension between Faerghus and Duscur so I honestly don't believe Ingrid is racist. I think she's more of an ally after their supports. If her mentality was "I think all people from duscur are bad except you" I don't think she'd go through the lengths of reconciling Duscur and Faerghus if she hadn't grown. Plus, as Byleth, you pretty much have the control of your units' growth and character depth anyways.
I view Ingrid as a grieving person, doesn't excuse her actions, but explains them. She was around 13 when the tragedy happened and she was 17 at the start of the game, so honestly I doubt any normal person could shrug off death of a lover that easily when we literally got best boy Dimitri admitting he killed men, women, and children before from insanity. (((Three Houses is reeaaally morally gray and as much as the units and route of Blue Lions is my absolute favorite, I think Golden Deer is just the very "lightest" gray compared to all houses))))

Ah, the whole racist Ingrid debacle...
My take on it? When Ingrid says "But you? You seem nothing like the people of whom I speak"
she's referring to what she called on her previous line "people cruel and heartless, deserving of the tragedy that ultimately befell them"
and she says it was "punishment well earned", because "she lost someone very dear to her in Duscur"
    So... Viewing the whole picture...
No, Ingrid is not racist, she just let her emotions get the best of her
She lost her feyance, and then the people of Duscur where held accountable for the tragedy
it isn't farfetched if her anger and feelings turned against them.
But now that time has passed, and she gets to meet one of the people she thought deserved punishment, she sees how wrong that is, that "the people of Duscur" aren't who she should hate or resent, but "the people who are culprit for the tragedy"
Even she herself calls it "an unfair prejudice" and that Dedue "is not to blame"
If that is what a racist people would do (holding a grudge towards a nation cause you were lead to believe they were the culprits from killing someone close to you, but then realizing that generalizing is incorrect by definition), then I don't know what racism is :/ because this doesn't look like it.

    • @venomrulesall
      @venomrulesall 4 года назад +68

People that call her racist don't seem to understand what a racist even is. A racist is someone who judges others for their race, it's literately in the word. Ingrid's feelings towards Dedue was not because of his skin tone or any physical appearance. Had her lover been killed by the empire or the alliance, she might have mistrusted people from those places too.

The people saying she's somehow not racist are using really narrow interpretations of racism. A racist isn't just someone who constantly and openly uses racial slurs. A racist doesn't have to necessarily hate every single person of a race.
But she still immediately hated him based on his race. Ingrid's the "You are a credit to your people (that I hold a blanket negative opinion of)" type of racist. The kind who only makes exceptions for the people she knows, or has gotten something from. This is the BS "I can't be racist, I have a ____ 'friend'/neighbor/coworker'!" racism, as if being in proximity to specific individuals (who may just have to put up with you) counters your attitude towards all of their people. The "You need to prove your worth to me as a human being before I remove my prejudice towards you (and not my prejudice itself)" racism.
And at no point in their support chain does she actually change her opinion on his race.

    • @aegrajag

She grew up in a racist environment and became racist herself. Then she met Dedue, the first Duscurian she got close to. Between the C and B supports, she realised that not all Duscurians are bad and that she only hates those who attacked the King. She no longer has a prejudice against Duscurians.
The line were she says that Dedue is not like the others doesn't refer to the real Duscurians but to the idea she had of Duscur. She later explain "the people I hate are the ones responsible for that whole mess" = only the criminals, not all Duscurians.

It's the ending I got in my Blue Lions Route, and I can't explain how much I love it
Those support conversations are amazing, Dedue is obviously adorable as always, and Ingrid...
Sure, she is flawed but the way she is self-conscious all along amaze me.
Even in their first support, she wasn't proud of her behavior and apologize for it... Even if it wasn't really for the correct reason yeah
But the way she *really* apologize this time and realize how she was in the wrong in the next support always left me speechless.
Some would argue she apologize to Dedue only, and I mean... Somehow yes, because she was harsh to Dedue specifically because of her hate of Duscur as a whole, so she apologize to him specifically for what she said to him that wasn't justified
But does that mean she still thinks every other Duscurian are bad person ? No
"If you'd just speak to me- *if you'd tell me the truth about all of this*
-I do not know the truth of it myself. His Highness says the tragedy was not the fault of my people"
That obviously imply that she is aware by now that it was NOT Duscur's fault. That they weren't behind this. I don't remember much of the game right now because it's been years, but it was probably adress at some point in the story.
If you add this to everything else she says
"You seem nothing like the people of whom I speak"
"The people I hate are the one who are responsible for that whole mess"
I think it's enough to prove she change her mind and grew-up by now. She understood that Duscurian aren't necessarily bad, and that most of them, if not ALL of them, haven't actually done anything wrong.
She grew-up, overcame her misconsception and change her mind, and she's so incredible for this.
An other important point to adress though... Some people straight say that "She wasn't/isn't racist". And uh... I disagree.
I mean, she understood at the end so she is not racist anymore, but she was at the start.
Of course, she lost her loved one in a genocide when she was 13 years old and of course it's traumatizing.
And of course, if the one who ended up blamed for it weren't the people of Duscur but the one of anywhere else, she would've hated them all the same. So yeah, her hate it isn't really directed to Duscurian when you take it that way.
But, considering she WOULD have hate any other people who could've have been blame for it instead, in other circumstance... Depending of who and where it would've been called differently, but hating a whole communauty/population for a misconception... is pretty much what we call discrimination. (I don't have any better umbrella term for those kind of situation)
You can argue she had her reason and honestly she's understandable, it's not easy for a 13-16 y.o kid to deal with what happened to her... But it don't make her less racist.
Wait guys I wrote too much for youtube I need a second comment

    • @nocturne_interlude
      @nocturne_interlude Год назад

Discrimination doesn't start from nowhere- well, kind of. I mean, it always takes its roots from... something. And by "something". I mean someone who thought it was a good idea to spread bad rumours about a category of person without any reliable source, only to create a generalized hate over them. And it sucks. (tbh the bastard spreading misunderstanding purposefully is the one to blame first)
That's what happened to Duscur, their people were blamed for something they haven't done and it lead to them being discriminate. And though people couldn't know, and to quote Dedue "their hate were justified" (wrongly justified, but justified, unfortunately), well... It was "justified" NOW, but admitting no one fix the misunderstanding and let the people of Duscur being blamed for years, decades, centuries... Here you go, 500 years later Duscurian would still be hated.
But why would they be hated ? Oh, because they... Because... Because..!
Most people wouldn't even know why anymore. That's the racism we know now in our society, mostly. One that isn't even "justified" anymore, because that justification never really mattered in the first place. They just needed any reason they could find to create hate and conflict. And if they can't find a reason, they will invent one.
So yeah. Ingrid was still racist. Not in the way most people are now, because whatever the reason that started this mess in the first place was lost since long ago, but it doesn't make it something different.
The only difference between Ingrid and intolerant people we know now is that *she* was hurt. *They* are nothing but close-minded idiot stuck in hate and resent without even knowing why. That makes them quite ridiculous.
Sorry if my english is bad or if I poorly phrased something. I hope nothing I wrote seems offending, since it was far from my goal.
So uh... Thanks for reading and have a nice day, I guess

Honestly those who say Ingrid was racist doesn't even seem to know what a racist is. Her distrust of Dedue was not because of his skin tone, or the way he talked or any physical appearance. It's just she had a hard time trusting people from Duscar since her lover was killed by them, not because she felt they were animals and inferior to people like herself. Had her lover been killed by people from the Empire or Alliance, she more than likely would've had a hard time trusting people from those places too. Having said that though, demonizing an entire people due to the actions of a few is still wrong and she was being very unfair for that. But as we saw in these supports, she realized she was in the wrong and need to make up for it. If you want to see a better example of a racist character in Fire Emblem, then you don't need to look any further than Jill from Path of Radiance, she was pretty much raised to be racist.

I swear, people who accuse Ingrid of being a racist has no idea what a racist even is. A racist, like the word clearly states, is someone who dislikes people based on their race, but that was not Ingrid's problem at all. Her distrust of Dedue had Nothing to do with his skin color, she was distrustful of him because he came from Duscur, a people who killed the man she loved and destroyed her best chance for a happy life. Yes, judging a whole people due to the actions of a few is still really horrible, but it has nothing to do with racism. Had her fiance been killed by people from the Empire or the Alliance, she likely would've been distrustful of people from those regions too. Calling her a racist is completely unsupported, since there is not a single other moment where we see her being hostile towards someone due to how they look or how they talk. People only call her racist because Dedue just happened to be black, had he been white, then people wouldn't say anything.
If you want a good example of racism within Fire Emblem, look no further than Shinon and Jill. Shinon is openly racist towards anyone who isn't human, and Jill was pretty much raised to be a racist.

@@obara7366 She was never racist! She didn't mistrust Dedue because of his skin color or the way he spoke, it was because of where he was from, and black people doesn't come from only one place, they come from all over the world. Racist people judge other based on how they look, mainly their skin color, like how black people and Asians have been victims of rasism for decades. Had she said these things to a white man, people wouldn't be calling her racist... Then again, given how the SJW world works, if he was white, people would just call her sexist instead, despite the mountain of evidence that proves she isn't. So maybe I should say, if she had said those things to a white Woman, then people would have no leg to stand on.
Ingrid is a prime example of a character getting an undeserved reputation due to memes on the internet who over exaggerate every single detail and make them look like serious offence.

@@venomrulesall it is extremely reductive to say race is only about skin colour. I can have the exact same skin colour as someone who is Indian or Pakistani but I am African.
Ingrid is racist towards Duscurian people. I love Ingrid but the writers did a poor job of communicating her growth. Well, Japanese have never been good with race sensitivity in general in their media.
Duscur is a race of people, they are wholly distinct from the Almyrans in the game.
You are being absolutely pedantic (while still being wrong) and are trying to use the specificity of words to shade the fact that Ingrid was still abigot.
Fine, even if we don't use the word racist (also American black people can still be racist to Africans, buddy) she was still a prejudiced bigot.
      She WAS.

@@obara7366 Like I explained, Ingrid's problem with Dedue had NOTHING to do with his race. But the region he was from. She didn't act this way because she believed she was racial superior to him. Had her fiance been killed by any other person from any other region, regardless of their race, she would've acted the same. She wasn't racist, she was unfairly judging the people of a region due to the actions of a few. Which is still horrible, but it's not racism, it's ignorance brought on grief.
Like how many people hate crocodiles and sharks because they've lost loved ones to them, believing they are evil monsters, even though they are not. Racist people are those who believe that people from different races are inferior to them, like how black people were treated like slaves because of ignorant white people who believed themselves superior based on skin color or other traits.
I am not saying Ingrid was right in her treatment of Dedue and I honestly wish he had snapped at her and called her out on how unfair she was being, since he had nothing to do with what happened. I know I would snap if someone bad mouthed me for something I had nothing to do with. But people who call her racist is Wrong. She is not racist, she is just letting her past grief blind her. Ignorance is not racism, and given how quickly she began trusting Dedue further proves it, since a racist wouldn't just change their mind so easily. And she has never judged anyone based on their race in any other support.

@@katharsis101- Gotta remember that Ingrid was also a teenager. It might be well into adulthood for the Japanese, but her worldview would still be very simple. I was pretty racist when I was younger, too; and nobody killed my fiancé. It takes meeting people and seeing things to show you the error of your ways. But most importantly, as the game shows, it takes kindness and an open mind to pry open that oyster.
