I wanted to draw your attention to my comment where I ask permission to use portions of your excellent video in a PSA type media to inform my community. I think the message would be better received if I gave a local history and cut in some entry level information from your video over drone footage of our PFAS generators and the Lamprey River it seems to be seeping into. Most of your video will be too cerebral to begin with but your narrative is very approachable for novices to PFAS , and the credibility of the experts is far more compelling than me reading it off of a page. Thank you for the best video I have watched in this area . Very well done, congratulations.

I think the companies who developed these, should be held responsible for cleaning up the environment and damage they have caused. Perhaps that would force them to change their actions in the future. This is the same thing on repeat, some company creates some chemicals or has some environmental disaster. They never seem to be liable for their actions. I think the only way to start changing the future for the better and avoid the same thing from happening again, is to start having these companies be financially and legally responsible.

Sadly its impossible to get entirely rid of plastics but a step there at least...
This has to be consumer driven, make them fail and flop if they keep using them, reward those who dont. No other way around it. Governments are too slow, corrupt, incompetent, or simple have no time or budget to test everything. Best path forward is us taking ownership of it.

I would confirm that the perfluorocarbon chains are exceptionally inert, and they can be only destroyed by high heat. But it doesn't remove all that fluorine. To do so, we need to burn it with a metal (e.g. magnesium). The perfluoroalkyl substances act as an oxidizer, and we end up with metal fluorides and magnesium. For this reason, PTFE is actually an oxidizer used in some forms of flash photography.

The deep life or bacteria in oil uses arsenic instead of phosphate to join the base pairs together on the DNA backbone . Also there will almost certainly be radioisotopes in oil as there are in fracking.

These are great informative videos. Is there one on glyphosate? There seems to be no regulation on how much enters our food system. Crops are doused with it right before harvest. What kind of disease could this be contributing to? Lymphoma or digestive issues? It seems that every other person is suffering from digestive issues and a depleted microbiome. Thank you.

Excellent talk thanks. I live in the EU but know the US very well having lived and worked their for a while. This whack-a-mole game played between the regulators and manufacturers in the US illustrates the difference between the fundamental attitude of the EU regulatory system and the US system. In the EU a company must prove a chemical is safe before it can be used whereas in the US its the other way round - if something is 'Generally Regarded As Safe' (GRAS) as stated by the company ...then it can be used until its proven unsafe and its not the responsibility of the manufacturer to check this.
We see it very graphically in the market for supplements ('Nutraceuticals') which is the US is essentially unregulated by an Act of Congress pushed through by lobbyists so in the US its now a 50 billion a year (2021) market in the US whereas cross the border into Canada and you find that supplements (and what the manufacturers claim they do) are tightly regulated. and the same in the EU.
One of the ongoing fights between the US and EU (and between the US & Canada) is that the US considers these regulations as 'unfair barriers to US companies' trying to export. Fortunately the EU is a big market and quite able to tell the US to step off.

All these chemicals/compounds are relatively modern inventions. Humans lived perfectly fine before developing these. Profit is starting to become more important than human health and nature. Very short sighted thinking. It's time that these corporations who develop such products are held accountable. Far too often, they create these, know very well the dangers of these, and yet still legally pump these out. And then they just get bailed out by the government. People used to live more harmoniously with nature. We need to start valuing our health more, our greatest asset and and most valuable wealth.

I am a ChemE and MD , always worried about thousands these chemicals , sometime in the food chain, sometime in the trash or environments, may be time to think about global effort to clean up or find good alternatives, before we get to point of no return. Starting to put these research ahead of“ global warming” is good direction.

My question is: If you eliminate these substances, can the body eventually clear them after many years, thus gradually reducing the accumulated health risks? The reduced blood levels seems to imply this? But can they be stored in fat and organs etc?

What about using non-stick pans where the surface is deteriorating? There is no warning label on the pans.

    • @organicchemistry6357
      @organicchemistry6357 2 года назад +2

That's not intended. However, ceramic non-stick layers are generally a safer alternative, as long as the ceramic doesn't contain heavy metals. That can be checked with X-ray spectrometry or LA-ICP-MS (a mass spec system that measured metals on surfaces, minimally destructive and highly sensitive).
Ceramic will deteriorate in a long run.
From my own experience, using one has been more convenient compared to non-stick based on polymers, which deteriorates overtime

    • @kittykittysoftpaws

I bought a pan that was labeled as "ceramic" then I noticed the coating was peeling and looked just like when Teflon peels....so I got rid of it and now I just cook on stainless steel. Also my instapot came with a coated bowl and I bought a stainless steel one to replace it.

We are very careful in our consumption. We use a water distiller and the source is city water. We test for particles with an Amazon water tester. It usually has 1 to 4 particles compared to 0 with bottled distilled water from grocery. Would you recommend we continue or try something else. Our made distilled wated makes coffee, tea, drinking water, and anything used in the cooking process. We are also concerned about nanoplastics. Please respond. Thanks
