Welcome To The Video Of Today - Visiting Londonderry, Northern Ireland
The Irish word Doire, which means "oak grove," is where the name Derry originates. The old city, which is centred on a hill on the west side of the River Foyle, is encircled by well-preserved city walls that are 1.2 miles (2 km) in circumference and were built in 1618. The distance from the point where the Foyle spreads into the large Atlantic inlet of Lough Foyle is approximately 4 miles (6 km). On the spot, St. Columba founded a monastery in the 6th century, but Norse invaders decimated the community by setting it on fire seven times before 1200. Later, during the Tudor Wars against the indigenous Irish, the town was a crucial strategic location. The monastery and Irish churches were destroyed when an English force took control of Derry in 1600. James I of England handed Derry to the people of London shortly after. These people planned the new city, erected sturdy walls, and brought in Protestant settlers (both English and Scottish). After that, Londonderry became the official name for the location. Throughout the 17th century, the new city was unsuccessfully besieged many times, most notably in 1688-1689 by the army of James II. Many artefacts from the siege of 1688-1689 can be found in St. Columba's Cathedral, which was first constructed in 1633.
Bloody Sunday was a protest by Roman Catholic civil rights supporters in Londonderry (Derry), Northern Ireland, on January 30, 1972, that descended into violence when British paratroopers opened fire, killing 14 people. After Bloody Sunday, the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which advocated using violence to compel the UK to leave Northern Ireland, saw a rise in support.
Derry-Londonderry is an eye-opening experience whether you begin or end your Giant Adventure along the Causeway Coastal Route there. It is one of the best preserved walled cities in the world and one of the few places so immersed in history and culture. This town, which we like, is home to opulent hotels and offers some of the best dining and drinking options. not to mention the largest Halloween carnival in the entire world. Step outside the city's 400-year-old walls, and you'll find some of Northern Ireland's other titans, including a Nobel Prize winner, in County Londonderry. And then there's a big welcome and a legendary sense of humour to top it all off. You can discover winks and tributes to the cheeky Derry Girls all across the city. They introduced that humour to our screens in recent years. You can take one of the several Derry Girls tours offered in the city, and it's unlikely that you'll miss the enormous mural painted on the side of Badger's Bar.
The city's 400-year-old walls, however, are the true attraction, and a tour of them is a must on any trip to Derry-Londonderry. The Guildhall is a stunningly magnificent edifice, a crucial part of Derry history since 1887, and has hosted presidents, playwrights, and poets over the Years. Next, stroll over the Peace Bridge to Ebrington Square where you can have lunch at The Walled City Brewery before returning. The multi-award-winning brewhouse and restaurant of the city's first craft brewery in more than a century serves excellent food and craft beers. Or visit the Seamus Heaney Homeplace in Bellaghy, which is only 45 minutes from Derry and follow in the footsteps of a literary legend. The poet's voice, pictures, and personal anecdotes are all present in this completely immersive encounter.
