Thanks for posting this. I'm trying to learn the basics for safety, like if your house or basement floods, you should know how to turn off power. Yeah, I know if the main breaker is in the basement it's better to call the utility company to shut off power rather than tread water to turn off power.
Thank you for sharing this video!! I was so confused looking for the main breaker in my panel and it not being there. Mine was outside under the meter box. 🙂
Great video. I only confused with last slide: "Removing covers can cause electrocution even when main breaker is turned off." I thought all idea to turn Off main breaker is to allow remove covers to install new breaker (for example for EV car).
Excellent Job... I can't believe how unprotected those outside trips are! A crook could just secure power to the entire home and then invade? Gives me PTSD just thinking about that (';')( ';')...
Rest assured no criminals thought of it before, besides most criminals invade when no ones home and they sure don't want to tip you off they are coming.
I am having a lot of difficulty finding a 400A 1-phase 120/240 Type 3 (320A Continuous) disconnect that I could use near or at the meter when the meter is located near a pad-mounted transformer (power company 400A service)
You can find pictorial diagrams on Google Images. Remember, removing an electric panel cover could result in electrocution. We advise contacting a certified electrician.
So how do new homes get wired? Does the power company have to shut the power off at the street or pole so that the main breaker and breaker box can be installed?
We had a hurricane and have been out of power for 3 weeks. I have my main breaker turned off. My question is, will the digital meter show numbers when power is restored or do I have to turn the main back on?
I live in an apartment there are 4 meters, my neighbors meter isn’t working, but they can easily turn it back on. There is no lock for turning it on and off. If there meter shows nothing, an they still have power, are they stealing electricity?
What rating of conductor is run from the weatherhead to the meter base for overhead service? I've been trying to find a correct answer for a while. I know it has to be sunlight resistant but can't find if it's THHN/THWN or what. Thanks
How did that meter pass inspection being do high up? I thought the power company had installation requirements that the top of the meter could not be higher yhan 6 ft 6 from grade. I have had instsnces where it was higher and i was allowed to build a step or two underneath so those little meter reader girls could see the meter straight on.
Let me ask,, I shut the power to my home off at the basment panel to do some work, I have no outside main shut off,, why did I still have live wires even though all the power was off
@@ClayElectricCoop thanks, but out of all the years you've been in the electrical field that's the only knowledgeable answer you can come up with..I can't even get a maybe "it's this"...
You can't. Only your power company can do that. They have to pull the meter. Unless there's a cut of between the meter and your panel. But you REALLY should have a main breaker somewhere between the meter and the panel. I’ve never seen one that doesn’t.
Just about always seen in mobile home parks, this is the main dis-connect. the load center for a mobile home will be a 'SUB-PANEL meaning the neutral and grounds busbars are isolated, The grounds bar bolts right to the cabinet, whereas the neutral is ISOLATED BY PLASTIC BRACKETTS.
Thank you for that comment. My grounds and neutrals are tied together in both places and I have main breakers in both which uses up 4 spaces in my sub.
@@notme22 I think you have a dangerous situation and that you could get zapped and pretty badly at that. Neutral and grounds are only to join ONCE. But it is your place, so do what you want.
Because the N leg does not go thru the breaker. It's tired directly to the center tap on the transformer, which is tied directly to ground. Only the two 120v legs go thru the main breaker.
@@josephherron7671 Ok captain obvious for telling me something i already knew yet didn't answer the question. Lets try this again, WHY does the Neutral NOT have a breaker to separate it from the house as the 2 Hots do ??
Thank you for you question. Homes and small businesses only require Single Phase Lines/Breakers. Mostly, heavy industry that draws a large amount of power requires 3 phase power.
My old house is weird. My outside main breaker under the meter is only 50A-50A circuit breaker and a separate (not control by the main) 30A-30A single-pole breaker for the dryer which is standalone wiring straight to my Electric dryer. Therefore; inside my house main panel, there is no Dryer circuit breaker since it is outside and standalone. Therefore, my house total is only 80A (50A entire house+30A dryer) according to the outside panel. Anyone has similar issue? Very weird.
Clay Electric only supplies electricity to the meter. Anything beyond the meter is the home owners responsibility. Breakers do not fall under Clay Electric's obligation. This video is simply a courtesy for resetting breakers. Please contact a certified electrician relating to all issues beyond the meter.
That one panel you were flipping the main off & on is a very bad panel THATS A FEDERAL PACIFIC panel and you should recommend that it be changed out Federal cheated ul .The other bad panel you dont show is ZINSCO .I was personally involved in PUTTING FEDERAL PACIFIC OUT OF BUSINESS IN THE STATES and have no remorse I happen to be a licenced electrician in cook county il . The bozos that built my house in 2003 gave me a breaker box in the house that has no main breaker so I would only be able to do it outside to change a ten dollar breaker smh do you see my situation a lot....
Uh. That's not true. Removing the breaker panel cover will not CAUSE electrocution. It simply ALLOWS an idiot to electrocute himself by touching shit he shouldn't be touching.
Very useful. Helped me solve the mystery of where the main breaker was at my house.
This is a great video! Thank you so much for taking time to make a truly instructional video. This is a lot of help. Thanks,
Thank you for your kind words.

Thanks! great channel btw :)
excellent video thank you so much
Very nice now I know what the power company meant by when they said I should turn on the main breaker... thank you
Should the branch circuit breakers be off before you turn the main breaker on?
Thank you for useful video.
Yes is very helpful.
Great video!!
Q. What is the voltage of the main breaker. Do they go bad causing power outages

exactly.
What if my house is so old that i dont have a main breiker and i need to add one should i call the electric service company or an electrisian?

I have 100 amp inside and 100 amp breaker box outside do I need to get 200 amp to go down to 100 outside

Why does the main breaker NOT separate or disconnect the N leg from street power...?? Why does the main breaker ONLY shut off the (2) 120V legs...??
