    Based on your recommendation, I read this book and loved it. But I quickly noticed that Quiller didn't explain everything I needed. As I researched further I also read his next book, Painters Guide to Color. And yes, right here he really explains everything. He himself describes his key experiences in several places in his book: "I heard and understood the theory. But how do you really use it when painting?" or "It's the near grays that are the key to painting with colors." He proves in a hundred ways that he has asked himself every possible question on the way to understanding painting with color... and answered it. Paul Klee also once talked about this moment when he became one with the color. He was a fantastic teacher and his images and writings are brilliant and groundbreaking. But it is Quiller who has finally and forever documented the path step by step. Understanding and teaching Zen in the art of painting with color!

    I have a copy of this too. SQ is a great teacher and a good writer too! I formally studied his work in Colour Theory when I was in Uni. Such an inspiration to follow!

    Beautiful color choices in those pictures. I really like how you turn the pages in your book reviews, we can actually have a good idea of what's in it. And those color wheels are really interesting, I might buy it. Thanks for showing us!

    Looks like a really good book, I'll probably get it.
    I feel a lot of my paintings could have been much better if only the color selection was more on point.
    If I analyze them - the drawings are good, the values are good, but something feels off. And it's usually just the color scheme (:

    a 1989 book still sells because there's really nothing new you can say about color. Vincent van Gogh could have written a book about color theory and mixing, and it would still be relevant today in my opinion.

    Thank You the Cover Art threw me off too!!
    Was researching buying the color wheel when I found a reference to it~ Your book reviews with flip throughs are so helpful in making a decision as to whether the book is what I am looking for!! 😎

    Thank you Teoh. Although I am not an urban sketcher I never really enjoy going through your posts, both the old and the recent reviews on books and artist’s materials. I primarily paint landscapes and portraits but, I do respect your unbiased opinions of your reviews. I did purchase this along with WaterMedia Painting with Stephen Quiller and his book, Painter’s Guide to Color. I am looking forward to reading all these books!

    he also has a porcelain pallet set up very much like his colour wheel , those two together would make a great gift to the person who really enjoys mixing their own paint

    I bought this book recently and it is truly fantastic, but I was surprised that not everything he paints is watercolor. A lot of those beautiful paintings are acrilics. Which is a totally different technique.

    What has aggravated me over the years is the books that present a color wheel without referencing it to the tube colors available. To those just beginning in the realm of color and paints such a help, I think, would be a true boon to the budding artist.

      @ProdigiousAnt 7 лет назад +1

      Stephen's color wheel is available in a large size version with all of the tube colors listed on it. Each pigment has a list of what color it is called in acrylic, gouache, watercolor, casein and oil in the different brands available. www.quillergallery.com

    I bought the book. Agree that his paintings may not be to everyones ( or my) liking but the apparent simplicity allow the theory to get past the distraction of showy slick brushwork. It ends up being quite an expensive book if you embrace the ideas because many old faithful tubes of colour get replaced by colours that combine to allow a better and broader colour pallet. This is not a an easy thing to do but likely to be rewarding in the long run. Thanks for the review of this useful book.

    I love the cover of that book. I don't have it, though. There is another book which was recommended to me by Susie Short and others in the watercolor group that I joined years ago. The book is called Confident Color: An Artist's Guide to Harmony, Contrast and Unity by Nita Leland. Another book which was suggested to me which I did not purchase is called Blue and Yellow don't make Green by Michael Wilcox. Have you looked at either of these books? I do have the book by Nita Leland. I might have checked the one by Wilcox out at the library; but, I do not own it.

      Thanks, Teoh. I was curious. You have quite a stack of books. I have several books as well; but, I think Nita Leland's book is the only I have that is color theory oriented.
