I have fine hair and low density. My loctician only had two main requests, which were not to make me look scalpy and give me enough locs for fullness but I can still do my own hair. I was gifted with 102 locs and combined 2 locs on the temple for a finally total of 100 locs. I trusted her to bring my vision to life and 4 yrs in my journey I couldn’t be happier.😁
I have high density hair and have started with 86 locs. The reason is I don’t think I can manage much more than that on my own as I will be maintaining them myself.

I experienced the "this is too much hair" and so I tried to combine them but it still felt bulky. I made this set bigger. I have about 100 locks. It's perfect. I live in a high bun. I could never have done it with the bulk I had before.
I love that you talked about this. I have high density and more medium density around perimeter with fine hair. I have 300 locs and they are just what I wanted. Full and small but not micro sized. The ones in my less dense areas are smaller but I love them
I've actually had three sets of locs and the first set were traditional, pencil size locs. The second and current set are more on the microlocs side. I chose to go with smaller locs this this time because my hair is fine and soft. I wanted the fullness appearance. I'm pretty pleased with this set as I'm 15 months in.

I was very overwhelmed and I still am. I believe I still have about 500 locks and I can’t wear a ponytail just yet. I never went through the scalpy phase with my locs and I feel like I just have a ton of hair on my head. Braiding and banding was very hard and because of that, I suffered and am suffering from major bunching. I am three years in and wouldn’t change anything about my loc journey. Just know, with high density hair, your retightenings will never be 1- 2 hours, expect longer sessions.

This time I'm starting off proper semi free form starting with the 2 strand twists making sure each loc has a solid base. However I realised today that I made my locs way too big-35 strands and I have medium density hair. I decided to check u tube for ideas and I've decided to redo the twists and go for bout 50ish. Thx so much!!!
I have high density hair and every location consultant I went to, suggested I get between 500 to 800 locs. I wasn't down with that. My hair is thick, I can not imagine interlocking 500-800 locs. I think for thick high density hair, 200-400 locs is a great range.
Omg I'm in that class: average density, fine hair strains, with traditional loc size and I'm battling that scenario: not a lot of column, flat to my head, more scalp than I expected. I wish I had had a loctician like you that actually cares enough to ask these questions and provide these scenarios...I just hope with greater length I'll achieve more fullness smh

I am so glad that I got my locs done by a professional because i have different hair densities on my head (higher density in the front and lower density in the back). So the loc-to-parting ratio would need to be different for all the locs to come out the same size thickness (and I wanted medium-small thickness). But yeah, this is a real thing that I've realized moving forward. Thank you for sharing. :)

Hi Bindi your video is directly on point! I have medium density hair with fine strands. I had 318 Sisterlocks installed on 9-12 inches of hair but my locs were still scalpy after 4 years. To fix this, a different Consultant split many of my locs and within 6 months I started to notice a HUGE difference! I lost my first set of locs due to chemotherapy. However, I’m confident my second set will be fabulous now that I know I need smaller locs! Thanks for this video I’m sure it will help many people and good luck with your new business ventures! I have both Low Density and Fine Hair strands and have been feeling like I made the wrong choice with small locks. I wish I would have had someone explain it to me like you just did. Come to think of it I didn’t have any say in the matter I just sat down in the chair and they were started. However, I didn’t know any better! I am two years and now with I guess you would call traditional locks I only have 76 and now wishing I had at least 120. But will I start over? I have high density hair and locs the size of a pencil (give or take). My hair naturally has a lot of body even when I don’t add curls or do braidout. Wish I saw this before my first set of locs lol. I had low density hair and only 49 locs. It didn’t give me the volume I wanted at all and I just combed it out after a year and a half. Looking forward to my new journey of small locs! Great video!
Great video! I have very high density thick hair with 180 small locs. Feels like so much hair for me and I have a hassle trying to style. I’m also only 4 months loc’d at the moment but I can tell larger locs would be easier to manage with my hair type.
I have high density hair and my first set of locs were started with coils. I asked for medium size and they doubled in size becoming much bigger than I wanted. I ended up with around 140 locs. It was very difficult to make a ponytail with my hair because it was so thick. I ended up cutting my locs off because they were too thick and it made it difficult for me to wash my hair. I was having issues with buildup from shampoo not fully rinsing from my hair. For my 2nd set I think smaller pencil size locs would work better for me. I want around 200-250 locs this time.
Shared this experience! Currently doing this right now..started with 63, too bulky. Split them, in half, 126, still too thick. Splitting them again.. Going for 250ish this time.
I just wanted to add that as you age, your hair density can change due to hormones/menopause. So I now have ave density instead of high density and I have experienced thinner strands around the temples and middle. So this loc set I chose 140 locs to make up for the thinner strands and to give me a fuller look. When I was younger, I had 67 locs and 89 locs and this worked well. Now as my hair has thinned some with menopause, I needed more locs to achieve fullness. Also I am opting to keep my locs at bob length because they tend to loose volume as they grow longer.
I have low density, fine hair but my parts are bigger than the actual length of my locs so I feel it looks skimpy. I wish I had did more research before I started my loc journey. That’s a mishap I have to deal with. I feel like if your locs/parts are made small in the beginning, it’s no big deal to combine them later. But if they are big to start, there is no going back, only combing them out and starting all over 😒
Great information! I’m having a hard time finding the size that I want my locs to be. I had my locs for about 4 months and then combed them out. I had around 170 locs and split them so now I have about 290. I have a low hair density so thanks for the video! Love you hair
I have to agree that this is very accurate information, I have low density hair but didn’t know it. I wanted a full look so I got Sisterlocks but then I wanted a thicker Loc look and mistakenly thought that combining my locs to traditional locs would give me that, NOT! I just ended up with fewer locs that, when retwisted look sparse and scalp and I am unable to “semi-freeform” because my strands are still low density and it would pose too much tension with the weight of the Loc so, from experience, this information was spot on, everything you said is true. Thank you so much for the information, I am about to start my locs on 4c fine thin hair and didn't know what size to make them. I don't want a lot of volumes but I do want them to look full. I am going with the diamond parting and I will do them small.
I have fine, 4b hair but average density luckily and that’s why I opted for microlocs. However, mine are considered small traditional locs by some. I wish I didn’t get diamond parts however. Along my perimeter I have some areas where my hair is 3c/4a texture and lower density so those locs are tiny and had more issues with unraveling at first. Other parting methods would have allowed for certain sections to be bigger to account for the different texture/density.

So I have regular density hair however my texture is very fine so I have larger parts in the front to keep from thinning or breaking. I also have around 92 locs but it definitely does NOT look like such. I've seen people with 50 to 70 locs and theirs look very full. I am fully aware that I didnt get the "look" that I was hoping for. But i understand that my hair texture and density would play a factor in how my locs would look. I'm 7 years in my journey and I'm doing the no retwist challenge for the month of April and am enjoying the "illusion" of my locs looking full. I also enjoy my fresh retwist too. But being that my locs are longer now they do not look as thin as they did when they were younger. So I'm happy with it all, except my parting system. I have a sort of brick pattern. I only wish I had a parting system that allows me to have a middle part and/or deep side part. I'm not much into styles so I didnt choose a parting system in the beginning. I've learned so much over the years and will not restart my journey just to make that one change. Thanks for your explanation of things in this video it was very helpful and I can share with others who are contemplating starting their loc journey. By the way, I loved your 1st set of thick locs. You have beautiful hair.
I’m 4C Low Density. I have 359 locs but redoing a few Ried in the back because they are a little too big. (My neighbor helped me with the back and we had a bit of a language barrier.) when finished I should be around 400. Until I saw this video, I was considering sizing down my front locs (current count 80 on each side -160). They look like they got a little bigger as I got to the top. I wanted 1/4 inch all over. Now, I’m rethinking it. I certainly wish I had paid more attention during the install. Thanks for making this video!❤

I have fine CURLY hair when I say curly it locs on its self… I’ve had three sets of locs all large… the first set I combed out after 2 years, second set after 1 year my set now I have 27 locs they are VERY LARGE, but because my hair is full put fine it looks full now… my locs are soft and will never be dense or harder tougher locs you see with people with 4 type hair.
My hair is high density and thick but I wanted skinnier locs. While my locs are the size of a pencil my hair is still voluminous. With my first set I started with two strand twists and had about 120 locs. With my current set I have 140 but the volume is still there. Around my edges my locs are very thin so I may need to combine them later on but I don't know if it's possible to get the look I want. My current set are instant locs and the loctician I went to said that locs started with two strand twists swell more but it seems like I just have more locs and have the same fullness. I guess I'm trying to get thinner locs when others want their's thick.

I have mainly medium density with thin strands. However, the very top of my head is high density and I have low density on the temple area. It gets frustrating because people try to give me tips on how to "regrow" my edges, but it's just genetics. I have 276 locs with a good amount of volume at the top and I just do braidouts if I want more. I once wanted thick locs, but I know I would not get the volume I desire. I've also noted smaller ones, but I know I already don't have the patience for the amount I have lol. They're waist length with bangs in the front. I'm about to experiment with color due to boredom.
As a loose natural my hair was very thick and full which I loved. I got sisterlocks because I thought they would be the perfect balance between my fro and locs which they have been. That being said I have the largest size sisterlocks and still have about 550 locs. 🤷🏾♀️😂
I am so glad you did this video. I have thin strands. I took my lox’s down twice because I just could not style it to look cute for me to go out in public and feel comfortable. Based on the info you provided I am still unsure what size to go with. I like micro lox’s but need a size that will give me fullness....

Hi Bindi! Always love your videos. Your first micro Loc journey is what inspired me. I have 206 locs I started myself via 2-strand twist almost 3yrs ago. I have thick Kaur density in the back and fine low density in the front. Even with 200+ locs I have a Lion's mane most of the time in the back and sides but a compliment the low density at the very crown of my head

I was considering locking my hair. But I have fine hair, low to medium hair density. I so would love the look on me, but I don’t feel like what I’m imagining in my mind would actually come out on my head 😭😞 and I’m at the hair shedding phase of postpartum right now so 🙄😐 We will see lmao I’m not giving up. Hmmm tbh I dont have any favortie videos demo-ing parting. I went mostly off photos of sisterlocks grids prior to becoming certified. Whatever path you take, though, I do reccommend that you do some test locs, and let them sit for a month to "troubleshoot" before you do the whole head. 3c hair can be a lil tricky.
Good idea. So last night I did the blowout and parting. I did about 30 braids. I'm not really happy with what I did with the parts so I'll be combing them out. I'll keep a couple to observe. Her hair tangles quickly so I know I cannot get her hair wet during the observation. Thanks for the tips!
@@MalikahJ Tbh, I would actually reccommend a couple washes while youre observing so you can see how her hair swells, contracts, and generally responds to the braids before committing her whole head to the process. You may find you dont like the appearance after the washing process. With that said, you know her hair better than I do and it may be more trouble than its worth so do what you think is best for you and for her.

Hi there - I understand the choice but I think you could get a very nice look in the mid to high 400s. You would get a beautiful result with 600 but the maintenance is going to have to be adhered to very strictly and will quite tedious. What's your density and loc count, please? I'm mid arm length, permed with 5 inches of new growth. Maybe going to cut down to new growth and start micro locs. My hair is low density, fine and wavy when wet. Many inches of hair to cut off so before I do that I want to be sure this is really what I want to do

I have no clue! I always thought my hair was high density. Every stylist I have had has told me my hair was really thick. I have about 600 sisterlocks but my hair "looks" average density since it has been locked lol. I'm only 8 months in and it's above my shoulders so that may change but I'm confused lol.
Your stylists may still be right. You might have high density paired with smaller (finer) hair strands. Those specs together could make it so that even though you have a high number of locs and high density, it looks "average."

Yeah if you have high density hair you don't really need sisterlocks to get a full look. It was still be beautiful but it's not as necessary

I started with 74 but with my average density hair and big head I should have had more like 100. I'm only 1 month in so it looks like I'll start over

I wanted a full look so I got Sisterlocks but then I wanted a thicker Loc look and mistakenly thought that combining my locs to traditional locs would give me that, NOT! I just ended up with fewer locs that, when retwisted look sparse and scalp and I am unable to “semi-freeform” because my strands are still low density and it would pose too much tension with the weight of the Loc so, from experience, this information was spot on, everything you said is true. Thank you so much for the information, I am about to start my locs on 4c fine thin hair and didn't know what size to make them. I don't want a lot of volumes but I do want them to look full. I am going with the diamond parting and I will do them small.
What do you do if you have high density in some places and lower in others? And fine hair in some places and course in others ?
I have fine, 4b hair but average density luckily and that’s why I opted for microlocs. However, mine are considered small traditional locs by some. I wish I didn’t get diamond parts however. Along my perimeter I have some areas where my hair is 3c/4a texture and lower density so those locs are tiny and had more issues with unraveling at first. Other parting methods would have allowed for certain sections to be bigger to account for the different texture/density.

So I have regular density hair however my texture is very fine so I have larger parts in the front to keep from thinning or breaking. I also have around 92 locs but it definitely does NOT look like such. I've seen people with 50 to 70 locs and theirs look very full. I am fully aware that I didnt get the "look" that I was hoping for. But i understand that my hair texture and density would play a factor in how my locs would look. I'm 7 years in my journey and I'm doing the no retwist challenge for the month of April and am enjoying the "illusion" of my locs looking full. I also enjoy my fresh retwist too. But being that my locs are longer now they do not look as thin as they did when they were younger. So I'm happy with it all, except my parting system. I have a sort of brick pattern. I only wish I had a parting system that allows me to have a middle part and/or deep side part. I'm not much into styles so I didnt choose a parting system in the beginning. I've learned so much over the years and will not restart my journey just to make that one change. Thanks for your explanation of things in this video it was very helpful and I can share with others who are contemplating starting their loc journey. By the way, I loved your 1st set of thick locs. You have beautiful hair.
I’m 4C Low Density. I have 359 locs but redoing a few Ried in the back because they are a little too big. (My neighbor helped me with the back and we had a bit of a language barrier.) when finished I should be around 400.
Until I saw this video, I was considering sizing down my front locs (current count 80 on each side -160). They look like they got a little bigger as I got to the top. I wanted 1/4 inch all over.
Now, I’m rethinking it.
I certainly wish I had paid more attention during the install.

I have fine CURLY hair when I say curly it locs on its self… I’ve had three sets of locs all large… the first set I combed out after 2 years, second set after 1 year my set now I have 27 locs they are VERY LARGE, but because my hair is full put fine it looks full now… my locs are soft and will never be dense or harder tougher locs you see with people with 4 type hair.
My hair is high density and thick but I wanted skinnier locs. While my locs are the size of a pencil my hair is still voluminous. With my first set I started with two strand twists and had about 120 locs. With my current set I have 140 but the volume is still there. Around my edges my locs are very thin so I may need to combine them later on but I don't know if it's possible to get the look I want. My current set are instant locs and the loctician I went to said that locs started with two strand twists swell more but it seems like I just have more locs and have the same fullness. I guess I'm trying to get thinner locs when others want their's thick.

I have mainly medium density with thin strands. However, the very top of my head is high density and I have low density on the temple area. It gets frustrating because people try to give me tips on how to "regrow" my edges, but it's just genetics. I have 276 locs with a good amount of volume at the top and I just do braidouts if I want more. I once wanted thick locs, but I know I would not get the volume I desire. I've also noted smaller ones, but I know I already don't have the patience for the amount I have lol. They're waist length with bangs in the front. I'm about to experiment with color due to boredom.

As a loose natural my hair was very thick and full which I loved. I got sisterlocks because I thought they would be the perfect balance between my fro and locs which they have been. That being said I have the largest size sisterlocks and still have about 550 locs. 🤷🏾♀️😂

I am so glad you did this video. I have thin strands. I took my lox’s down twice because I just could not style it to look cute for me to go out in public and feel comfortable. Based on the info you provided I am still unsure what size to go with. I like micro lox’s but need a size that will give me fullness....

Hi Bindi! Always love your videos. Your first micro Loc journey is what inspired me. I have 206 locs I started myself via 2-strand twist almost 3yrs ago. I have thick Kaur density in the back and fine low density in the front. Even with 200+ locs I have a Lion's mane most of the time in the back and sides but a compliment the low density at the very crown of my head

This was really eye opening. I think I know what size for them, but I am REALLY considering braidlocs for my daughter who has similar texture to your daughter's. Can you recommend a video to watch for parting?
Hmmm tbh I dont have any favortie videos demo-ing parting. I went mostly off photos of sisterlocks grids prior to becoming certified. Whatever path you take, though, I do reccommend that you do some test locs, and let them sit for a month to "troubleshoot" before you do the whole head. 3c hair can be a lil tricky.
Good idea. So last night I did the blowout and parting. I did about 30 braids. I'm not really happy with what I did with the parts so I'll be combing them out. I'll keep a couple to observe. Her hair tangles quickly so I know I cannot get her hair wet during the observation. Thanks for the tips!
@@MalikahJ Tbh, I would actually reccommend a couple washes while youre observing so you can see how her hair swells, contracts, and generally responds to the braids before committing her whole head to the process. You may find you dont like the appearance after the washing process. With that said, you know her hair better than I do and it may be more trouble than its worth so do what you think is best for you and for her.

I wanted small traditional locs and just got my locs started this month! I uploaded a video on my channel so you can see what it looks like, but I'm thinking my parts are too big? Hey Bindi 👋 was wondering do you have any tips on shed hairs? Like the little white bulbs are so unsightly on the locks on the front. Can i pull them out with a tweezer? Dye them? Or should I leave them be?
Leave them. For me, they are most noticable right after a wash, but they become less noticable after I apply oils.

Hi there - I understand the choice but I think you could get a very nice look in the mid to high 400s. You would get a beautiful result with 600 but the maintenance is going to have to be adhered to very strictly and will quite tedious. I recommend you watch my other video before coming to your final decision.

What's your density and loc count, please? I'm mid arm length, permed with 5 inches of new growth. Maybe going to cut down to new growth and start micro locs. My hair is low density, fine and wavy when wet. Many inches of hair to cut off so before I do that I want to be sure this is really what I want to do

I have no clue! I always thought my hair was high density. Every stylist I have had has told me my hair was really thick. I have about 600 sisterlocks but my hair "looks" average density since it has been locked lol. I'm only 8 months in and it's above my shoulders so that may change but I'm confused lol.
Your stylists may still be right. You might have high density paired with smaller (finer) hair strands. Those specs together could make it so that even though you have a high number of locs and high density, it looks "average."
