  • The BBC Radio 4 UK Theme is an orchestral arrangement of traditional British and Irish airs compiled by Fritz Spiegl and arranged by Manfred Arlan. It was played every morning on BBC Radio 4 between 23 November 1978 and 23 April 2006.
The piece was used as the signature theme to introduce the daily beginning of Radio 4's broadcasting following the early morning handover from the BBC World Service. The theme was immediately followed by the Shipping Forecast. In 2006, the decision by Mark Damazer (Controller of Radio 4 at the time) to drop the Radio 4 UK Theme to make way for a "pacy news briefing" caused much controversy in the United Kingdom, including extensive discussion in the British media and even in Parliament.
Austria-born Spiegl moved to the UK as a refugee in 1939, after his parents fled Nazi persecution of Jews after the Anschluss. He had contributed several pieces of music to the BBC, including a theme for Radio 4 based on a children's skipping rhyme introduced in 1973 (called A Skipping Tune), which was replaced by the Radio 4 UK Theme.
On this video a celebration of a united Britain. Based on traditional airs the focus shifts from England's iconic White Cliffs of Dover to Ireland, Wales and Scotland roughly in sequence to the music which is cleverly overlaid. A little taste of patriotic pride comes which echos of battles on the high seas and the sky. The video concludes with the aerial masts that delivered the radio signals to the air-waves and a sad reflection that somebody powerful at the BBC decided to use the proverbial axe.

I used to hear this theme music nearly every morning I was an avid radio 4 listener. It brings back some happy memories. I love your images they show the beauty of the British isles which seam very appropriate on the day we’re leaving the EU . Thanks so much for this Jayne Anne. John X .

In the days when ITV came on air at 0925, all the ITV regions had their own start-up music like Radio 4 did, such as Sea Songs (Anglia) and Southern Rhapsody (Southern) for example.

Nice description in the notes, this was used 1978-2006 for 28 years, the original was 05:03 long, this arrangement was very good, never worked out why the re recording wasn’t identical.

@@feline1104 The transfer to other media would not have been possible at the time, a re score was later commissioned by the the BBC, possible with another Orchestra, the bbc recording was never published.

I’m from the US and not familiar with Brit radio but I did enjoy this piece!
It could use a better title now that it has ended it’s previous life.

The piece would be rejuvenated Bruce and get wider appeal I think. Thank you so much for the comment. Jayne Anne

Sadly not the original version. It sounds diferent and is 5:26 long. Original was exactly 5 mins and recorded by BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra is I remember correctly. This is I think the more recent versionrecorded for a CD release - but was never actually broadcast.

Middle classes decide that showing hatred for British history absolves them from taking any action in the modern world, such as adjusting world trade to a more equitable system which assists the third world. Of course, they will not do so, that would affect THEIR standard of living; instead, they insist upon making stupid gestures such as banning this music.
