I once cleaned a barrel with pure ballistol after shooting 44-40 cartridges loaded with triple seven in a 73 . Big mistake, 3 days later the barrel was badly rusted. Took me quite some effort to brush it out with Sweets 7.62 and a chopper brush.
@@hogsnplanes yes ut seems those substitutes are way more corrosive as real black powder. 777 cleans up nice with plain water, no more black hands either.
I'm using a mix of 7 parts water to 1 part Ballistol on strips of patching material. I let the strips completely dry then use the patches in the traditional way, cut with a patch knife.
Hello, I think I have the same one as yours. Do you have it where you are cleaning, and a disassembly video on this too? I didn't see how you took it apart, I would like to see that. Great video though!
Water is all you need to break down the fouling but I like the oil film left behind protecting the metal. Ballistol by itself doesn't work near as well but is a decent lube.
I got into BP shooting a couple of years ago and I've been using soap n water but after drying I always had to wipe everything down with a thin coat of oil so I think I'll be using this Balistol from now on.I lke how the oil coats the rifle after the water is gone. This will help my rifles a lot. That was a very good video.
ra777 i got , in to muzzleloading when I lost my rights for telling a doctor I was depressed and he checked some box and put me in some kind of database
I'll recommend the good old soap and hot water. To prevent rust afterwards I'm using swiss oil from "Brunox". Ballistol is an old, traditional oil from Germany - not good, not bad. I think there are much better solvents and oils out there.
I ordered some. It should arrive soon. I shoot cap and ball revolvers and I have a 2 band Enfield. I watch A black powder fella on RUclips and he has sworn by it for 25 years. It really works great on the revolvers. I've seen his cleaning videos. Only downside is I have to mail order it. Pretty pricy with shipping. I can't wait to try it though. Looks like its worth it. I like the idea of non harsh cleaners and it lubricates too. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks. That was a terrific video.
il y a quelque années que j'utilise ballistol avec de l'eau et c'est le meilleur produis que j'ai utiliser pour les balle ronde avec patch et pour nettoyer mon Hawken .50
I am doing the same thing as you: eliminating all my other gun oils and just using Ballistol. For grease I use a lithium grease I got from Walmart. The tube was less than $10.00 and it will last a long time.
What a nice rifle, my o my. Looks much like italian Pedersoli Country Hunter in .50cal. Jelouce, big time. I used Balistol on my Harley to prevent from rust in winter, worked like charm.
Kia Ora from NZ. I'm a South paw & I have many BP muzzleloaders. All right handed. I where glasses & have absolutely no issue with lock flash cap / flint. You do have to follow through. Just as you do normally. Theres a moment of non vision for sure but ,follow through & when the smoke clears ,bullseye haha sometimes.
Think of your BP rifle barrel as you would a cast iron frying pan, that is NO petroleum based products on it or in it.TC makers of the famed though discontinued Hawken rifle recommended their Bore Butter which they still make, after a thorough cleaning with hot soapy water.Crisco will serve in a pinch.
This way there is no surface rust or hot water. You can put the breach end in the mixture with the nipple or flash hole plug out, flush it in and out with a patch or mop. If any is left inside, the water evaporates leaving non petroleum oil and doesn't rust. I just find it easier and left with a seasoned barrel :)
Back and watching your interesting vid once again. I guess I'm wondering now how just water would have worked relative to your half and half Ballistol/Water mixture. If it worked so much better with water, then maybe just water would work best of all?? I'm also wondering if your gun would have been more accurate without the Ballistol oil in the barrel during your target shooting. Many thanks.

It was a cheap used gun, I don't abuse it. Turned out to be one of my favorites. If I try something new it's usually with this rifle. Ballistol is all I use now for all my Black Powder guns.
I just put together my first BP rifle (Lyman GPR .54 RB). I am completely new to BP and just can't figure this out. my first 2-3 shots are pretty accurate, but then it starts opening up in a bad way, despite swabbing out after every shot or every other shot. Will swabbing between shots with Ballistol to better or am I thinking about this all wrong? I've been told to foul the bore, and I've been told to clean between shots. Thank you for any advice you can give!
Make sure the charge and projectile are the same. I use a Ballistol 10% and water 90% mix to clean the bore at the field. Most of the time I go 3 to 4 shots before cleaning, also use a lubed patch on round ball.
@@hogsnplanes Thank you! I'll give the Ballistol a try! I've been using the pre-lubed patches, tried dry swabbing in between. That didn't work, so I switched to alcohol. It didn't do much better.
Hey man, great shooting, waiting on gpr. lyman of course! gonna do some accurate tests.I hope will have a few questions for tip. thanks great shooting.
Thanks for the Ballistol Tip . If you might prefer more reliable ignition and less "sparks to face" a sealed , screw together 209 primer conversion does exist for your CVA Hawken Frontier Hammer Percussion rifle. Slower to reload, small risk of a lost screw cap/firing pin assembly. Weather resistant when assembled. There are reasons to "Keep your powder dry". Be sure to order the one with the correct size screw threads for your gun. www.cabelas.com/product/Davide-Pedersoli-Primer-Nipple-Conversion-Kit/1608590.uts or better yet www.warrencustomoutdoor.com/mag-spark.html
I see Your response is 7yrs. old . Today it's not necessarily either better , or cheaper to use the conversion , it just gives You the best of both worlds , so to speak . There are times during the year , that caps aren't available ( at a fair price ) , same for the primers . It just gives You options ( sometimes You can get one , but not the other ) .
I got time, I'm trying 15 thou patch 490 rb, my patch lube bore butter, lard, mink oil leather conditioner. boil water to clean, spray balistol 50/50, spay hot barrel inside/ out. am I on rite track? thanks again

I had no problems like that, I mix Ballistol with water now to clean without a problem. I did however get rust using Blackhorn 209.

Not yet, probably will in the future.
My black powder revolvers very oily from ballistol over a month later I wipe it down with ballistol with a silicone cloth
Keeps the rust away.
the water cleans the residue and the Ballistol does the protection. The 1:10 mix is all that I use to clean and protect.
That's how I mix it now as well, works great.
Works well, I like the fact it can be used on all guns including wood and leather. Works good on minor cuts and scraped too (:
I use Ballistol too & it work well on both black powder & smokeless. I really like it on black powder, though.

Bill Melater Black powder fouling needs water based cleaner, some just use water. I use water, 90%, and Ballistol, 10%.
you're suppose to mix it with water according to balistol.
