Here’s a visualized/geometric version of Spasm you might enjoy - this is from a rhythm game that sort of turns riffs into shapes, and Meshuggah being what they are, their songs turn into really cool shapes :) : ruclips.net/video/nHMEm7r17tQ/видео.html
That hidden riff is exactly why I love this song so much! It's like a steady anchor to ground the whole thing, but it's sooo subtle amidst the loud, heavy spasming, it gives a feeling of holding on to a thin thread trying not to be swept away by a violent storm. Absolutely magical!
I love this song-- a gem along with Organic Shadows. But I also love the humility you show. Not at first consciously recognizing the six-beat nature of the phrase and telling us about it is rad, because it shows that even talented musicians like yourself don't always hear everything the first time. You've had this angle a few times on your channel-- a teacher who still learns. And I really appreciate it!
Oh man, the moment you think you know everything is the moment you stop growing. There's so much knowledge around that thinking you can cover even a significant portion of it is simply wrong. Happy to always keep finding more and more !
that snare part is really interesting and almost relatable. I can see how maybe whomever wrote that part was just plugging sequencer notes into their midi and came up with this wacky disorienting part. so cool. this channel is great, yogev. yalla!
This song was one of the first from Meshuggah that truly struck me when I first started listening to them waaay back. In a sense, rediscovering it through your perspective made me realize that the song actually has the same sonic mindbending quality as "Catch 33", which has been my favorite Meshuggah record, and one of my all time faves for quite some time. Oh, and the whining worked. *SUBSCRIBED*
This part of Spasm makes it quite unique among other Meshuggah songs, because I don't remember any other piece in their entire discography having such a clean, clear and stable melodic counterpoint that goes throughout the entire piece only with minor changes applied to it.
Haha, joke's on you, I was highly aware of that riff! I've always seen Spasm as an absolute underdog and analysed it really hard. Can I have my medal now?
that lead riff thing was one of the first things i noticed about spasm when i first got into the nothing album so i would like my medal too please thanks yogev
That whole album is really cool and unique. I first saw Meshuggah live between Chaosphere and Nothing when they were first playing stuff like Stengah and it was crazy to hear for the first time.

Amazing as always :) Have You every listen band Confessor ? ( apparently its called technical doom metal ) it's bit different than bands like Meshuggah because tempo it's much slower but in my opinion they do some crazy rhythmic stuff .
Yogev I just wanted to say I’m a drummer and huuuuuuuge Meshuggah nerd and I’ve struggled to play that snare solo in spasm for years. I can play the rest of the song but always get lost at the snare solo, I just can’t count it consistently, as soon as the crash comes in I end up playing some hits too early or late. This visual representation FINALLY unlocked it for me. Thank you so much 👏🏻
About your question at 7:47 : Ligature Marks has a 5-whole-note-long drone for a while (at 0:25 in the song, and it comes back at 1:41), but it’s much less developed than in Spasm Also, the hidden riff going down one halfstep at the end has always been one of my favorite moments in their discography. It has such a dramatic and evil effect \m/
@@YogevGabay HAHAHAHAHA. But there's always this beautiful moment when you finally discover something that you've missed for awhile. I've done that many times.
Please Yogev, or guys here recomend me book or course or video for BASICS of rhytmic. I love meshuggah but I am sooo confused about subdivisions of numbers.
I always 'heard' it, I just never noticed it's SO consistent and also NOT in 4/4! I guess I just never paid attention to it for some reason. It's constructed so well !
You missed THAT riff/lick in Spasm!? I can name two of the riff you discussed that I missed, but that high dissonent riff together with the heavy chorus riff was the thing that got me hooked on this song when it came out.
Same, that atmospheric lead/lick/wtv is what makes Spasm stand out to me as a less typical sounding Meshuggah song, alongside the whispered vocals. Not sure how anyone could miss it but hey, that's the beauty of music, everyone hears different things!

I was waiting for you to explain how the lead part is in 6/8 haha, now I'm here trying to figure it out. The high accent is on the 5th quaver assuming that's the subdivision, so I'm slightly confused. Otherwise though an awesome break down, this track is killer!
Man we Meshuggahnauts salute you!!! Love all your content!!! Can we maybe hear some of Freddy T’s solos broken down..?🤷Talk about some mind expanding/mind altering rhythm inside of rhythms. Keep it up Yogev!!!
I thought this video was going to be about the lead riff being played a half step down at the end. It took me YEARS to notice that. I'd been analysing the song for years and learning the pattern of each riff. I even learned the drum solo pattern. But I NEVER noticed the half step down. I only noticed it because I skipped to the end of the song by accident once. When I did that, it absolutely blew my mind
I think the same thing as "hidden riff" but melody is in Dancers' chorus with pattern of 5 descending quarter notes x 6 times + 2 remaining = 32 quarters.
I think it's actually 6/4! I always loved that bit about the intro: how they have their usual "polyrhythm" playing against the normal 4/4, but this one throws a 6 on top of that whole mess! It's crazy
