    Because I always mess it up and end up like "1, 2, *bang* , 4, 1, 2, *bang* , 4, ...,1 2 *wtf? no snare?* , 4 *bang* ..." and my counting is fucked.

      The snare sounds really confusing under what they're playing in that part, but it's just a half time 4/4 snare on the 2 and 4.
      The snare never changes from the part leading into it, but the whole band starts playing a 14/16th override on top counted: 1234 1234 123 123 1.. I've been drumming for 20+ years and I still struggle to keep track of both rhythms at the same time :')

  • @jmricks
    @jmricks 3 года назад +22

    Riff #8 is my favorite part of the song from a drumming perspective. I wish you would have explained that section from the drum pattern point of view. It's sort of similar to a triplet grid exercise where you displace the accent one triplet eighth note forward every measure. In this case, it's the patten that's displaced forward every measure, all while keeping the right hand hitting constant quarter notes. It's such a fun and groovy section of the song.

    • @meters_and_madness
      @meters_and_madness 2 года назад

      It's my favorite part too, really hits on the The Ophidian Trek live version. It's pretty simple from a drumming perspective. The snare follows a 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 pattern where each snare hit is preceded by two kicks and each grouping is ended with a single kick: kkSk kkSkkSk kkSk kkSkkSkkSk. As a drummer, I really only focus on the 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 snare count while the feet fill in the blanks. It sounds amazing because it takes 16 repetitions before it resolves back with the 1, so its constantly tugging you in different directions relative to the 4/4 pulse.

    11:32 Very important to understand this comment. These mathematical breakdowns of the songs are useful for figuring out the patterns being played over 4/4, BUT it's crucial to hear the song in 4/4 NOT the patterns! Otherwise you will be forever lost, completely missing the actual 4/4 groove.

    Riff #7 & Riff #9 are ironically my favorite. The groove displayed with those 2 riffs is what draws me to metal and music in general.
    First time seeing your channel, and since I have zero knowledge of music theory as a guitarist, I greatly appreciate and respect this breakdown.
    DTADS is one of my fav meshuggah songs and love to listen to the instrumental version, but never got a chance to learn these Riff as it can be difficult to follow wtf is going on sometimes with Meshuggah.
    "No one knows how I Goes" < quote from Tomas Haake regarding their song/ep "I"
    Thanks again for this video Yogev!

    Oh no, I’m still here, at the end, because I’m a shuggah-nerd. Have been so since the 90’s.
    I’m absolutely fascinated by the way people make their songs so complicated! I don’t know why or how, but I just feel their music/riffs/rythms… It’s actually more interesting to me to analyze the different ways people think about and count their music, so that I can get a clue as to what I am feeling, or rather how I am feeling it. 🤘

    Riff 5 always messes up my feel. As much as I can headband to the whole song in a steady way, the crash cymbals that are played on accents are so counterintuitive, even thought the snare plays on 3 in every measure. Amazing breakdown, man! I love it. Now I only quietly wish that you would break down the outro of Lethargica🖤
