This is a fantastic video, just spicy enough to get the point across effectively. I’ve now got some time scheduled for recording and mixing in my calendar for the next four weeks. I use the calendar and reminders in my phone for all kinds of work related things, but this will be the first time I schedule time to work music. Makes sense, thanks for the advice.
So I had this "vision" years ago of doing song covers and putting them on YT. I wanted to do a lot of songs, go check when I uploaded my last video 😆. I somehow have never thought of putting these recording seasons into my calendar, that's probably why I have only 2 videos on my channel. Thank you for this, I'll try my best in 2025.
This is great advice and applicable to any creative endeavor, not just music. I'm reminded of the quote attributed to William Faulkner "I only write when I'm inspired. Fortunately, I'm inspired every morning at 9am." Peace!
This is great and what I needed to hear. When you started to talk about scheduling an hour of learning and an hour for making, I was like yes!! I’ve been doing that since March and I’ve improved so much!
Hey first off been making music my entire life....finally released my first song today!!! Super stoked about it. I have 2 on the way. Out of all the producers i have learned the most from you. Thank you for real!! Second....i record things around 12 db's and then i will mix it to taste. Then when I mix down it's clipping. Its not though before that. I also use the limiter thing you taught w the k 14 and 6 db's. I cant get it louder than 14 Lufs before it sounds bad. It's so frustrating. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It's literally so crazy I uploaded my first song and then you make this video. Thanks for the advice and like you said I just kinda was sick of wanting to make my own music for years and years and I just was sick of it. Much love people!!!
3:42 you right about most of us not implementing this advice I don't know why our brains tell us to just "go with the flow" but it probably makes things not better.
Although it was great to spend time with family, our spirits are very heavily dampened by the fact that we learned our 14 year old cat has only a few days left due to cancer. Cleo is a good cat.
4:22 it is so important! I know this advice already but my brain probably feels uncomfortable with it so it tells me to just "go with the flow" which isn't working well.
I e always wrote music but lately I've been doing things in phases instead of bouncing around like writing phase, pre production, full production and getting tones, recording and editing, and mixing and mastering just like the pro bands do haha
3:08 I'll be honest I'm not really good right now. Over time my music will be improved so I can't tell you an exact time. But when I'm gonna make music? Every day is a new day for music.
4:32 But joe I don't have enough audience to make that promise to... What if I break it and now I'll break it everytime and it will be a vicious loop that is hard to end? That's a question i thought of
my most important piece of gear - was - Studio one - now it´s my torrent client because you dont sell Studio one anymore - its just possible to rent this software - most ppl stop buying, you need to pay every year to get uptodate version. Thats bad ... No one need to buy this software - no problem brother!
Since when is a concert creative? Unless you're writing the songs in the moment on stage, a concert is all about practice, schedules, logistics, and rehearsals that go towards producing an expected sound. You can get creative with details (especially if it's a solo gig) but the bulk will be planned out in a professional setting. Am I wrong?
Not sure if you are a performer, but as a performer, you rely on your skill and creativity in every live show. I don't think it would be fulfilling for me otherwise. Musicians aren't machines; they are artists, and I think creativity, even on the 1000th performance of a song, is still needed. Also - some of the best live acts that I have seen, improvise in the moment on a number of songs when the creative urge hits them. Typically, new songs take shape in live performances as creativity strikes and most of the albums that I love have songs that have peaked creatively through scheduled performances before recording.
@@ronallen2458I'll be honest, I'm not convinced all musicians are artists. Some are artists (songwriters, producers) Some are technicians (session players) There is creativity in live performance but buy and large, that's not the core of what the audience want to hear, they want to hear their favourite songs played appropriately for the live setting and relatively faithful to the studio recording. At that point, the musicians on stage are simply fufilling a role and doing so with their own flair as needed. But, that creativity is not the same as songwriting, which can happen anywhere at anytime, and is a deeper process than just learning the chords, the melody and putting your own flavour on it. You can schedule a concert play a great concert. And you can schedule a songwriting session but there's no guarantee a great song will be written in that time.
Depends on how you define “creative” I guess. Music is being created at a concert. It’s not being INVENTED, but it’s certainly being created. Notes are being played. One minute there is no music, the next minute there IS music. Music was created, hence “creativity.”

Great video and advise. One addendum: schedule a goal ( a song, an album completion) and reward yourself for making your goal.

I finally gave myself a deadline few monthes ago and eventually released the first track of a project started 5 years ago.
yep, tough love
Plus vibe
2:25 I didn't release music and i still agree with you
By release I mean using distributers to upload music to Spotify because I am uploading my music to SoundCloud

7:05 yeah that's because it's seperated sessions so your brain can process what you learn and make
Thank i needed to eat it, and I'm going to start doing that.
