If I had to guess it was probably because she was still incredibly young. He proposed as soon as they graduated Highschool. So they were only together for 2 HIGH SCHOOL AGE years. She easily just could've felt like it was too soon to be getting engaged. And well, once you break an engagement, that's pretty much it typically. Which is why it's REALLY weird that they got so pushy about it. They had a 2 year relationship in Highschool and they destroyed their family over it.
