Welcome to the fifth episode of Aura of Alaska! In this episode, I take you on a thrilling night drive from the Arctic Circle back to the Arctic Circle Trading Post, navigating icy roads and winter wilderness in complete darkness.
The adventure continues with a stop at Yukon River Camp for a late-night dinner, refueling before the long journey ahead. Driving through the remote Alaskan landscape in the middle of the night is an experience like no other-endless snow-covered roads, the crisp Arctic air, and the mystery of the wild surrounding us.
Upon reaching the Arctic Circle Trading Post at midnight, the real excitement begins as we wait for the Aurora Borealis to appear. While waiting, I’ll share fascinating scientific facts about the Northern Lights, including how they are formed, the best places to view them, and the ideal time for witnessing this magical phenomenon.
After an unforgettable night under the Arctic sky, I finally make my way back to the hotel at 5 AM, exhausted but filled with memories of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Join me as I chase the Northern Lights and take you deeper into the wonders of Alaska!
Best Places to Drive and View the Aurora in Fairbanks:
1. Murphy Dome - One of the highest points near Fairbanks with clear skies and minimal light pollution.
2. Chena Hot Springs Road - A scenic drive with multiple pullouts to stop and view the Northern Lights.
3. Cleary Summit - A popular aurora viewing spot with a panoramic view of the night sky.
4. Ester Dome - A high-elevation location offering great visibility of the aurora.
5. Haystack Mountain - A remote and quiet spot away from city lights, perfect for aurora photography.
6. Chena Lake Recreation Area - A serene lakefront location with beautiful reflections of the aurora on the water.
