    I bet a Corvette gets a lot of attention in Germany. Very rare there.

    • @ActionHeinz
      @ActionHeinz 7 лет назад +74

      Clint Gliford No, not really. Corvettes had the reputation of being a pimp's car. Since a few years you can buy Corvettes in Germany from Chevrolet dealers. No problems to get one, but nobody wants them. They are still not very popular, like almost every american car. We rather buy M3s, RS5s, F Types or 911s.
      Quality is still an issue.
      But old american muscle cars are very popular here. Everything that's older than 30 years due to some special regulations for oldtimer in Germany.

    • @lolman77
      @lolman77 7 лет назад +6

      Yea indeed, they are not really popular. Like the big muscle cars are really not a thing in Germany. Unless, as ActionHeinz said, it is a pretty old school one (i'd rather say 50 yo. anything from the 60').

    • @SuperReviews4you
      @SuperReviews4you 7 лет назад +25

      Corvette a muscle car? Not really. They probably just dont like american cars.

    • @lolman77
      @lolman77 7 лет назад +10

      T Nelson. That's not what I meant. I talked about muscle as an example of "typical" american powerful cars.
      They indeed don't really like american cars in general, besides Ford (very popular; but Ford in Europe is nothing like in the US). The new mustang is everywhere in germany though!

    • @ChuckBeefOG
      @ChuckBeefOG 7 лет назад +23

      I've talked to a few German Corvette owners on social media that would beg to differ. They say they get a ton of looks and questions because most people aren't used to seeing them (C6 and older).

    Thanks for coming by Bill. That sounds like a ton of fun to get to play around with an American muscle car on a limitless road!

    • @ActionHeinz
      @ActionHeinz 7 лет назад +11

      VINwiki Well, in fact it isn't ;)
      I'm from Germany and American muscles are, as you know, not as common here.
      But one day a friend of mine imported a 2010 Shelby GT 500. Of course one of our first rides brought us to a part of unrestricted Autobahn. So we gave it a go and tried to flat out the car. At about 140 mph / 230 kmh we reached a slight bend with a small bump. We know this place very well and no other car had any problems there even with speeds well over 150 mph. But the Mustang... Oh boy, it was one of the most scaring thing ever happened to me. The car felt like the rear axle totally lost traction and skipped three feet, through the air, to the left. I'm sure it didn't do that but we needed two lanes to get back control. Luckily the Autobahn was pretty empty and nothing happened. Nonetheless we liked the car very much and, despite this situation, it was always a blast to drive.

    • @samwilson182
      @samwilson182 7 лет назад +9

      ActionHeinz I'm a Ford Guy. But the Mustang had a live rear axle until 2015. That's why it felt like that.

    • @boostaddict_
      @boostaddict_ 6 лет назад

      The C7 ZR1 is great and all, but the C4 is a different story. It was built when the USA didn't know how to build cars that handle well. A stock 1974 Porsche on 165 tires with a VW bus engine handled better.

      Richard Kelbe I lived in Munich for 2 years and I never actually got to go that fast, way too much congestion, especially when the trucks decide they want to drive in the left lane. Even at night I could only go about 120 for a kilometer or so before I hit traffic again. It sucks but toping your car out isn't really what the unrestricted parts of the Autobahn are for.

      @Rat3dM 7 лет назад +2

      Dr.Heinz while I agree with you, "a few zones left" is a huge understatement and very misleading. Yes most of it has speed limits but there are many parts you can legally go as fast as you want. I'd say 20% has no speed limit (just a guess)

    They found one of these ZR-1's a couple years back in a shipping container out on the docks down in Florida it had been stolen and missing for 20 something years. Apparently it had been sitting in that container the whole time. The cars aluminum was so pitted from the salt air the car was just trashed. They had about 10 or so pics of it and what a shame.

    • @nunyabusiness896
      @nunyabusiness896 7 лет назад +5

      You mean the car's steel? The worst thing that could happen to aluminum is getting a white "frost" oxide layer, which would be easy to buff off.

    • @HP.Customs
      @HP.Customs 7 лет назад +2

      DerekSiems I understand what you are saying the aluminum did have a white frost on it but along with that it had large pits in the aluminum also. It was like a thousand craters on the intake.

    • @nunyabusiness896
      @nunyabusiness896 7 лет назад +3

      That's really not that big of a deal, though, I've used lots of mechanical stuff with that kind of pitting on it. It's rust and actual holes you have to worry about.

    Wow, I never knew they only made 448 ZR-1s. I never really thought about it, but I would have guessed maybe like 2,000. This was a really cool story,

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 Год назад

      I think they only produced something like 700 the first production year in 1990, then 600 each year ( + or - ) during 1991 & '92. But for the 3 remaining years of the C4 ZR1, I'm positive they only made 448 each year: '93, '94, and '95. So they are fairly rare. They started out in '90 rated at 375 hp, but for the final 2 yrs of production in 94/95, they were making 405 hp. This was huge power for that time, especially for naturally aspirated engines. That Lotus designed LT5 engine was a gem. The C4 ZR1 is a legendary car, breaking many world records for speed, such as the 24 hr endurance record at an average speed of 175.8 mph. It destroyed the previous record that stood for many years at 161 mph average.

    Great story thanks for sharing.
    I had a similar run in Tennessee except it my Michigan plated Black C4 ZR1 & a Yellow C6 ZO6 with Tennessee plates to say the least we had fun for about 35-40 miles on a Sunday morning going about 160-172ish was about the fastest we got to. I was just happy there was hardly no traffic and no cops. At the end when reached his exit he slowed to around 65 or so rolled down his window and held up an old English ballcap (Detroit Tigers) if anyone does not know. To his surprise I rolled down my tinted window and I was wearing my Detroit Tigers cap too, he smiled gave me a thumbs up and exited and I kept pushing to Tampa. I'll never forget that drive, it was awesome.

    Most of these stories tell the fun part of the autobahn. It's no fun hitting the brake each while doing 130-140 mph evry time some idiot goes from the right to the left lane. And sudden traffick jams out of nowhere hoping the guy behind doesn,t get in your ass. 3-4 lane autobahn suddenly changing into 1,5 lane where barely can drive next to each other and the worst of them all truck drivers overtaking each other. Long story short so every now and then you can hit a high speed and jam the brakes for 1 of above reasons

      eh, I went 145 on I95 in a Camry v6 and it was not that fast feeling.
      Also went 120 through a construction site single lane in a Trans Am 6.6 on acid. That was fun with all the flashing lights on the road.

    I'm curious to know what are the requirements for Service members (and also visitors) in Germany to drive on the Autobahn? Do you have to take the German drivers license test to get permission?

    • @ParisGentlemandriver

      813Productions Nope, anyone can go, it's like normal highway excepted some parts are derestricted. You can drive it even if you're coming from a foreign country like France, Italy or Switzerland. No need to be german, have a special licence or pay anything!

      @813Productions 7 лет назад +7

      Arthur wow seriously? I remember one guy who was stationed overseas back in the 90s told me (and our defensive driving class lol) that he had to take a test and memorize hundreds of different signs and stuff to get his license. I guess he went and got a fully fledged German license or he was talking out of his ass lol.

      American military have to take a written test here. It's not as hard as the German test but it's not easy either. A lot of signs and other things to remember.

    I remember back in 1995 when I destroyed a 94 911 turbo on the highway at 170 in my 95 Vortech supercharged Pontiac Firebird Formula, with addition of full exhaust and cam. But then again the Porsche only had about 360hp and I had about 430.

    I made a mistake a few days ago, I was going 80 in a 30 and I got pulled over. The sheriff that pulled me over loved my C63 and told me that it would be a shame to see me crash. He gave me my license back and told me to slow down a little. “I’m sure this car is great in these back roads, but I don’t want to respond to a C63 in a ditch.” “I’d be heartbroken.”

    My Carera 3.2 hot rod is off the charts fun. But the gearing has it stuck at just around a top speed of 155 MPH. My C4 Corvette with a 425 HP engine and a 6 speed will actualy pull that insanely deep .50 6th gear to somewhere between 175 and 180 MPH. Pretty good performance for a cheap car.

    Love those original ZR-1s! Once I finally figured out how to quickly spot a real one, it became easy! If the extra inch on each side of the license plate between the plate and reverse lights isn't there, it's not a ZR-1
    Without looking it up, I assume they have ZR1 listed in the RPO codes of each one, right?
