"Your car is running very good." What a German compliment.
So true I had a friend who a Manta worked on I bet it would run close to 160
Das Good
😂 love the story
He took off his glasses too, sign of respect
Bill is a fantastic storyteller. That sounds like terrific fun.
Ed Bolian not as good as you ed
Adam Kaziev yeah. Ed is a terrific storyteller.
Ed Bolian Bill is still not as captivating as you lol
Ed Bolian i
Said the best storyteller of them all. No one has ever beat the hoe in a Lambo story lol
"That's my son over there. Don't you be listening to this."
Hahaha
I bet a Corvette gets a lot of attention in Germany. Very rare there.
Clint Gliford No, not really. Corvettes had the reputation of being a pimp's car. Since a few years you can buy Corvettes in Germany from Chevrolet dealers. No problems to get one, but nobody wants them. They are still not very popular, like almost every american car. We rather buy M3s, RS5s, F Types or 911s.
Quality is still an issue.
But old american muscle cars are very popular here. Everything that's older than 30 years due to some special regulations for oldtimer in Germany.
Yea indeed, they are not really popular. Like the big muscle cars are really not a thing in Germany. Unless, as ActionHeinz said, it is a pretty old school one (i'd rather say 50 yo. anything from the 60').
Corvette a muscle car? Not really. They probably just dont like american cars.
T Nelson. That's not what I meant. I talked about muscle as an example of "typical" american powerful cars.
They indeed don't really like american cars in general, besides Ford (very popular; but Ford in Europe is nothing like in the US). The new mustang is everywhere in germany though!
I've talked to a few German Corvette owners on social media that would beg to differ. They say they get a ton of looks and questions because most people aren't used to seeing them (C6 and older).
Thanks for coming by Bill. That sounds like a ton of fun to get to play around with an American muscle car on a limitless road!
VINwiki Well, in fact it isn't ;)
I'm from Germany and American muscles are, as you know, not as common here.
But one day a friend of mine imported a 2010 Shelby GT 500. Of course one of our first rides brought us to a part of unrestricted Autobahn. So we gave it a go and tried to flat out the car. At about 140 mph / 230 kmh we reached a slight bend with a small bump. We know this place very well and no other car had any problems there even with speeds well over 150 mph. But the Mustang... Oh boy, it was one of the most scaring thing ever happened to me. The car felt like the rear axle totally lost traction and skipped three feet, through the air, to the left. I'm sure it didn't do that but we needed two lanes to get back control. Luckily the Autobahn was pretty empty and nothing happened. Nonetheless we liked the car very much and, despite this situation, it was always a blast to drive.
ActionHeinz I'm a Ford Guy. But the Mustang had a live rear axle until 2015. That's why it felt like that.
VINwiki The road is not limitless! People like you are the reason why we might get general speed limits.
VINwiki u
VINwiki I well remember that stretch of autobahn that you spoke about ;-)
Your car is running very gud. Was the best part 😂
Luckily there's no corners on the Autobahn, cause that's not something Vettes like a lot
Last First have you ever driven a c6? Because I had the privilege of driving one wide open, they handle really good. I also drove a camaro and.... can't say the same about the 'maro I'm afraid lol
The C7 ZR1 is great and all, but the C4 is a different story. It was built when the USA didn't know how to build cars that handle well. A stock 1974 Porsche on 165 tires with a VW bus engine handled better.
We need an "autobahn" from coast to coast in the US....😎
YESSS I AGREE
And far more strict licensing like in Germany.
people can stick on the left lane
We need harsher licensing requirements in the US so this type of driving can be possible safely. Build a US autobahn!
P WrightisRight 90% of our freeways will need to be repaired then they're jacked
+Tim M a lot of the freeways are fine for 160mph. This country is a lot bigger than you think.
Just for youtube k maybe an Exaggeration on 90% but still there needs to be a lot of repairs but that would be awesome if we could drive that fast. Lol
P WrightisRight the highway system in America is designed for every car to do a constant 80mph. That was in 1955… since car technology has changed so much since 1955 any modern car can do a constant 100mph safely on the highway.
Tim M just keep the speed limit low in Michigan and it'll be fine.
"That's my son over there. Don't you be listening to this!" I can't count how many times I've heard my dad say this to me
That’s the dream for my ZR1. Only been able to hit 157 around the Fort Worth loop. I want that 186 number. Great video.
Anyone wanna go to Germany just to spend the entire trip driving on the Autobahns?
Well you think it would be great but there are simply too many traffic jams and consturtion sites.
Richard Kelbe I lived in Munich for 2 years and I never actually got to go that fast, way too much congestion, especially when the trucks decide they want to drive in the left lane. Even at night I could only go about 120 for a kilometer or so before I hit traffic again. It sucks but toping your car out isn't really what the unrestricted parts of the Autobahn are for.
i did euro delivery on my 435 last year and i easily hit the 155 mph limiter many times....plenty of unrestricted space
The majority of the autobahn has a speed limit, there are only a few zones left that don't have one.
Dr.Heinz while I agree with you, "a few zones left" is a huge understatement and very misleading. Yes most of it has speed limits but there are many parts you can legally go as fast as you want. I'd say 20% has no speed limit (just a guess)
"You're car is running very good" lmao i lost it
I was stationed in Germany as well and bought a older M3 off another soldier in a sister unit who was leaving Germany. Great times on the Bahn. 🇩🇪
Bill is like that cool uncle we all wish we had
Extremely well told. This is exactly what I come to this channel for and I am never disappointed.
Great story my dad did 21 years in the Air Force we lived in turkey Germany Japan thanx for your service stay safe god bless sir
I love this guy. Guy Fawkes of Hazard County.
Gus Kipper LMAOOOOOOO
ole ky boy right here. hazard the city of eastern ky boy.
Love the C4 ZR-1. I once had the opportunity to drive one, unfortunately nowhere near those speeds but just to be behind the wheel of that monster when I was in my late teens was awesome.
Absolutely one of my favorite corvettes. Lotus derived. Very cool to hear someone drove one flat out.
They found one of these ZR-1's a couple years back in a shipping container out on the docks down in Florida it had been stolen and missing for 20 something years. Apparently it had been sitting in that container the whole time. The cars aluminum was so pitted from the salt air the car was just trashed. They had about 10 or so pics of it and what a shame.
You mean the car's steel? The worst thing that could happen to aluminum is getting a white "frost" oxide layer, which would be easy to buff off.
DerekSiems I understand what you are saying the aluminum did have a white frost on it but along with that it had large pits in the aluminum also. It was like a thousand craters on the intake.
That's really not that big of a deal, though, I've used lots of mechanical stuff with that kind of pitting on it. It's rust and actual holes you have to worry about.
If your talking about the body of the car you do know that its made of fiberglass.
Nobody knows what they're talking about in these comments lol
That's one of the best stories lol
Great story! I spent 9 yrs of my Army career in Germany, driving on the Autobahn requires every bit of attention and concentration.
Dude that exhaust impression of the Porsche was bang on!
Wasn't it tho.
Get this guy as a regular.... Awesome storyteller
Is it just me or do you sort of get addicted to these videos & stories. I love them keep’em coming lads.
These just keep getting better and better....Love this channel so much!
This is my FAVORITE channel.
This is why I fucking love this channel man amazing stories from good car guys. Just awesome dude :D
Been in the military now for over 20 years (based in North Germany since 2001). I drive an Audi 90 Cabriolet but the most I've got out of it is 130 mph.
Wow, I never knew they only made 448 ZR-1s. I never really thought about it, but I would have guessed maybe like 2,000. This was a really cool story,
I think they only produced something like 700 the first production year in 1990, then 600 each year ( + or - ) during 1991 & '92. But for the 3 remaining years of the C4 ZR1, I'm positive they only made 448 each year: '93, '94, and '95. So they are fairly rare. They started out in '90 rated at 375 hp, but for the final 2 yrs of production in 94/95, they were making 405 hp. This was huge power for that time, especially for naturally aspirated engines. That Lotus designed LT5 engine was a gem. The C4 ZR1 is a legendary car, breaking many world records for speed, such as the 24 hr endurance record at an average speed of 175.8 mph. It destroyed the previous record that stood for many years at 161 mph average.
Great story thanks for sharing.
I had a similar run in Tennessee except it my Michigan plated Black C4 ZR1 & a Yellow C6 ZO6 with Tennessee plates to say the least we had fun for about 35-40 miles on a Sunday morning going about 160-172ish was about the fastest we got to. I was just happy there was hardly no traffic and no cops. At the end when reached his exit he slowed to around 65 or so rolled down his window and held up an old English ballcap (Detroit Tigers) if anyone does not know. To his surprise I rolled down my tinted window and I was wearing my Detroit Tigers cap too, he smiled gave me a thumbs up and exited and I kept pushing to Tampa. I'll never forget that drive, it was awesome.
I know that area very well!! I was stationed at Sembach AB just a few minutes up the autobahn from Ramstein AB!! ON MY last day in country a coworker let me drive his Saab 900 turbo to Frankfurt airport cruising at about 160ish, LOVE DRIVING THE AUTOBAHN!! I was there 2 yrs!!
This guy Bill is a real gas!!! I bet you could film a dozen videos with him. Thumbs up!!!!
The C4 ZR-1 is a beast of a car that is way under appreciated. Car and driver magazine tested the ZR-1 against the 911 turbo in 1991 and the corvette easily beat the porsche around a track. Corvette ZR-1 1:27.3 - Porsche 911 turbo 1:29.8
That would be a different story nowadays
one of my fav stories on the channel!
Probably one of my favorite stories thus far.
178mph in my c63 on the new underground toll road for 635 here in Dallas that thing is a total dream!!
I just love all these funny true stories. Love the channel
I drove a late model vettes twice into deep mexico.very high speeds on Mexico's dessert toll roads and smiles from a lot of rurals kids- will never forget my experiences.
"It's cute" 🤷🏼♂️ 😂
Man that ZR1 on the autobahn would be a dream, glad you didn’t crash that thing when that idiot pulled up in front of you
Love Bill's stories!
Most of these stories tell the fun part of the autobahn. It's no fun hitting the brake each while doing 130-140 mph evry time some idiot goes from the right to the left lane. And sudden traffick jams out of nowhere hoping the guy behind doesn,t get in your ass. 3-4 lane autobahn suddenly changing into 1,5 lane where barely can drive next to each other and the worst of them all truck drivers overtaking each other. Long story short so every now and then you can hit a high speed and jam the brakes for 1 of above reasons
Could we also talk about the 15km long roadworks, being under construction for the last years, without ANY worker or truck on it, all limited to 30mph (while you were going at 130mph before)?
I think that's been the worst for me.
I still consider the german highways as one of the worst in Europe (not the worst, though. Czech republic or Belgium are pretty fucked up)
lolman77 Belgium really is on another level in terms of shitty roads lol
fapqa978 Belgiums way of fixing roads is placing alot of bad road signs.
Complexi. Hahaha. Belgium roads are so buckled that, under rain, it turns into rain gutters and you gotta drive over two lanes to avoid a Final Destination end!
Sounds like a bunch of douchebags all trying to one-up each other at triple digit speeds. All in a country smaller than Montana, big rush. Ridiculous.
TY for your service, Moody brat here! Awesome story!
Love listening to your stories man lol, this sounds like such a blast, got me wanting to go Germany now to go hang out, sight see, and have a little fun on the autobahn.
Yeah! Sunday morning, Darmstadt to Frankfurt. Nothing better...
thanks for your service
I love all these stories, especially bills!
I had a similar event. But, here in Texas. I was in my 81-280zx. A Vette, a Porsche, and I were switching out as lead. Heading south on 35E.
I enjoyed that a lot. Your ZR-1 is gorgeous. Corvettes are so attractive. I first fell in love at 5 or 6. With a C3.
I'm glad i live in the netherlands, germany is like a 25/30 minute drive and the autobahn is a lot of fun
What is it with Germans joining the Autobahn?
A mate and I had a "wing-mirror almost touched" experience with a Honda CRV joining the highway and trying to get straight into the outside lane while we were doing north of 130 also in the outside lane. That was a butt-clenching moment.
I can relate so much to this story. I was in the army and stationed in bamberg germany. I bought an 01 chevy xtreme s10. Took it out on the autobahn on several occasions. Social media and video blogs werent really a thing back then so i could never prove it. But as far as i kno, its the only xtreme to have ever driven on the autobahn. Oh the looks i got from fellow motorists. Perhaps one of them has a blurry pic of me blowing by them
I got to drive on the autobahn in the same area he was talking about. However, I only got to drive an Army truck at 55mph... I'll have to go back another day!
I lived in that same area of Germany as a Kid, Def one of my favorite stories yet.
I´d love to hear more Autobahn stories
What looks like a stock zr1 holds it own against a modded 911. And the zr1 cost way less. God bless America.
Phillip Gagliardi the corvette maybe pretty fast but its a terrible car
Paul Thomson You never driven a Corvette.
+Paul Thomson The C4 ZR1 was so "terrible" Morrison Motorsports set a 5k km, 24hr, and 5k mile world speed endurance record with a stock fucking car. The 24hr record hadn't been beaten in 50 years...
sidefx996 thats good then its got something going for it then . Well done chevvy.
sidefx996 what other cars went in for this speed endurance record ??
can't wait for the movie
I Love The way He pronunces Kaiserslautern haha
Those donuts tho.
Hell yeah, there's nothing like racing to the huddle house at 2 in the morning
2:12 RAMMSTEIN!!!
Awesome. American cars are awesome. With the new Mid-Engined Corvette, I can't imagine how a Porsche will do against one.
I freaking love these stories!
My friend got up to 140 in her Range Rover on the autobahn, she said that you couldn’t see the trees outside the windows, just blurs!
joshxkerrigan very true. I went 120 years ago and they were pretty blurry
120? just got my ats-v 155 on the way to vegas.
98 Supra Fanatic yea 120? the other day i went 160 in my first gen panamera turbo let me put this straight tho i did 160 in a 60
eh, I went 145 on I95 in a Camry v6 and it was not that fast feeling.
Also went 120 through a construction site single lane in a Trans Am 6.6 on acid. That was fun with all the flashing lights on the road.
Ha, I got pulled over doing 91 mph in a pickup truck once too. Fortunately was able to BS my way out of any points.
I can’t wait to buy a C5 Corvette Z06
Spent a ton of time in K town in the Army! Great story.
Full Octane Garage 40 Mark Strasse? Lol
"Well, it's cute" - how I describe all Porsches
1:30 That LT5 looks so bad ass.
I'm actually stationed at ramstein AFB right now. This is an awesome story.
That's where I was. I loved it. Live at 3 Am Altenwoog, Miesenbach. Take advantage of being there!!
I lived in Mannheim as a teen and I remember my dad hauling butt on the autobahn. Thanks for sharing!
I'm curious to know what are the requirements for Service members (and also visitors) in Germany to drive on the Autobahn? Do you have to take the German drivers license test to get permission?
Great question.
813Productions Nope, anyone can go, it's like normal highway excepted some parts are derestricted. You can drive it even if you're coming from a foreign country like France, Italy or Switzerland. No need to be german, have a special licence or pay anything!
Arthur wow seriously? I remember one guy who was stationed overseas back in the 90s told me (and our defensive driving class lol) that he had to take a test and memorize hundreds of different signs and stuff to get his license. I guess he went and got a fully fledged German license or he was talking out of his ass lol.
813Productions Yeah he was talking about a German driver's license!
American military have to take a written test here. It's not as hard as the German test but it's not easy either. A lot of signs and other things to remember.
I like how at the end of all your videos its an add for services related to buying and selling cars that are worth more than my net worth as a human being
I remember back in 1995 when I destroyed a 94 911 turbo on the highway at 170 in my 95 Vortech supercharged Pontiac Firebird Formula, with addition of full exhaust and cam. But then again the Porsche only had about 360hp and I had about 430.
I know where Kaiserslautern is. And I've been on that stretch of the autobahn (as a passenger). Beautiful area.
gotta luv the wider side panels
I made a mistake a few days ago, I was going 80 in a 30 and I got pulled over. The sheriff that pulled me over loved my C63 and told me that it would be a shame to see me crash. He gave me my license back and told me to slow down a little. “I’m sure this car is great in these back roads, but I don’t want to respond to a C63 in a ditch.” “I’d be heartbroken.”
“Your car is running very good” such a German thing to say
Kaiserslautern.... visited that military base quite a couple times in the early 2000s as a kid
Very real car noise at 2:55 lol
I only made it too 110 in the country road some day. I will hit 160.....
mauro rodriguez I hit 140 in those field roads on my 95 lt1... it's kind of scary once hitting those speeds with the car haha my c6 does 165 easily and it's feels as smooth as 70mph
C4's are just a wee bit unstable because of their aero, and extreme lightness
best version of the best year in the best car in the best color. 95 zr1, so lucky
“It’s cute” 😂😂😂
Every time he says "curves", I understand it as "kerbs". Now, the roads in Germany are like race-tracks, but they have no kerbs
This has to be the best RUclips title
What I appreciate about America is the brute force their engines can offer
Air Force 21 years, well done!
So when are you going to drive that zr1 up to top speed son. I’m 77 , I’d do it before you get old.
Hit 178 in my ZL1 on the autobahn. Good times, good fun
My Carera 3.2 hot rod is off the charts fun. But the gearing has it stuck at just around a top speed of 155 MPH. My C4 Corvette with a 425 HP engine and a 6 speed will actualy pull that insanely deep .50 6th gear to somewhere between 175 and 180 MPH. Pretty good performance for a cheap car.
Cool ass story man. Cheers from Tokyo
Dude who are you kidding, you've never been any farther than the country line.
Nice story! I have a similar one with my '01 Formula....a few I guess. Headed back to ktown from Manheim...big valley, Sunday morning I had it pinned no idea how fast...165, 170 I guess.
It's my birthday today. Can I have Ed's Lamborghini? I'll take his other cars too😉
I'd love to hear more of his stories if he's ever in the Atlanta area again!
I just spent all this money!
It’s cute 😊
The LT4 is an insane motor!
Do you mean LT5?
Love those original ZR-1s! Once I finally figured out how to quickly spot a real one, it became easy! If the extra inch on each side of the license plate between the plate and reverse lights isn't there, it's not a ZR-1
Without looking it up, I assume they have ZR1 listed in the RPO codes of each one, right?
I want to see more of this guy and his ZR-1.
