    I've been to Thailand 15 times, eat street food daily and never once had food poisoning. True, it can take some time before your stomach feels completely normal, but it is safe. You could get sick at a restaurant also.

    So on a tourist visa you can stay in Thailand 90 days straight without having to leave the country correct?

    • @JeremyClodfelter
      @JeremyClodfelter  5 лет назад

      To the best of my knowledge, you obtain a 60-day tourist visa. That visa comes with the option to extend, in country, for 30 additional days. This gives you 90 days in total.

    learning basic Thai is the KEY!! The first time I was there just this month for a month, people thought I had a Thai wife. They will say "why you know Thai". I found myself getting Thai rates and instant respect. massage gals etc left me alone. Bar girls won't talk behind your back. All you need to know is Saw wad dee khap, (hello) Saw bai dee mai khap, ( how are you) Saw bai dee (I'm fine) Tau Rai Khap (spelling) ( how much) How to count. Khun chu arai (what is your name), Chop Chop, local slang for I like. etc. I kept my money in a money belt, all $3k in USD. I went solo and met a ton of good people. I was chill and stress was gone. I didn't bite my nails. As far as eating food.......start when you get there by eating 3 yogurts and 2 the next day. I didn't have any problems eating street food but almost shat myself once. Patty is a shit hole IMO. LEAVE YOUR EGO AT HOME. Be calm, be quiet, respectful and don't get involved with ANYTHING that doesn't involve YOU. I watched a guy get a beer bottle busted of his head by 4 motor taxi drivers for being a skippy with a gal that he ended up throwing through some thin bushes in pots at the corner of soi 12. Don't fuck with Thai people!!

    Yes, you can always keep your money at the front desk in. respectable hotels. We are not talking about dumps here. When I was doing my undergraduate work at the University of Oxford, I left my money at the front desk. They kept it in the safe and gave me a receipt. This is done in many respectable establishments.

    I've eaten a lot of street food and never had a problem. I suspect what tou get at 3 AM after you've had a few is very different from what you get at 1800 when you're surrounded by Thai housewives.
    I'm a cheap charlie. The idea of spending even $25 appals me. 350-400 baht ($10-12) for a room, not hotel, is nearer the mark for most people. Android learner app for Thai is a good idea. An hour a day for six weeks and you've 300 words and a load of useful sayings. Interrogatives - how much, when, where, what, have any - are very useful, and easy to learn. The first time you point to a massive bowl of curry and say, "A rai - moo, gai, plaa?", you'll feel like Christopher Columbus.

    It's just a holiday where you can have fun with the money you have. You'd be making a mistake if you think you can drop everything and stay there for good with no real means of income... I've overheard farangs talking about how they cant spend more than 60 baht per day in order to make their budgets work. They all thought the party would last forever. It doesn't. I'm fine with spending two months out of the year in Thailand... But after 2 months its time to go back home and focus on my career. On a more positive note, can't wait to go back for the fifth time this summer!!!

    My one month in Thailand (Nov '18) I only had one street food - pork rice soup. I was with a local who knew the place and it's cleanliness. My recommendation: If you find a street food you maybe interested in, take a mental snapshot - then go to a thai-mall food court. More than likely they do have that particular dish. Of course mall food courts are not 100% guaranteed safe - but better chances compared to street food. Food for thought (no pun intended): Curiosity will get the best of us went it comes to food. No harm in trying - be prepared for the consequences. In addition - if you do experience the dreaded food poison - go to the local pharmacy and take diarrhea meds along with antibiotics. I was very fortunate, I did not have an episode.

      here is what I have done before I used a money belt. I kept an envelope with my money and hid it under a table, under a drawer etc and dipped when needed only for my daily money each day. Never had a problem but I did leave my Sony camera in a safe when I left once. My bad. When I called they didn't know anything about it. Insurance will cover it.

    Luckily, they never took any money out of my safe so far. I always write on the envelope where my money is in, how much money there is left.

    Interesting perspective. If I may ask a question, where did he go in the Philippines that he felt "unsafe?"

    • @mbvalency
      @mbvalency 5 лет назад

      As I understood it, he did not go there. When you read on the internet people say it can be dangerous at times.
      Kambodia is also said to be not as safe as Thailand.

    • @JeremyClodfelter

      I was in the Philippines for 9 months. I felt safer in Cebu than anywhere else. Honestly, I did not realize how unsafe the vast majority of the country is until I spent several months in Thailand. This is the safest I have ever felt in Southeast Asia.

    Hello, is there not a way you could open some type of bank account where you could transfer money with low fees? so then you could avoid carrying all your cash.

      Yes there is. I currently use the service. Unfortunately, it can take several days to transfer money from the US to Thailand.

    Great back story...holy smokes Richard - It feels like I'm shadowing your early first year, heading back to stay at my condo in Pattaya. I'm done with hotels. lol Thanks for opening up on some pros and cons for the newbies...even myself. :) I gotta deal with street food, my gf and I go out on the daily...I buy my own meals, everything she buys is 1 up TOO spicy for me. @@ReeshardTravel Same, I bring very little clothes, only stuff (gifts) from San Francisco that my local Thai friends likes from the states. I come back and get rooted back into normal local life, market grocery shopping, home cook meals, visit friends, bar chilling, make merit at the temples. 😊 You know how the Thais do it. 🙏 I may take you on the advice of a tourist visa. It's my 12th time (come Jan 24th) the past 10mos.
