  • Filmed 12th August 2023, here are another batch of call-changes fresh out of The Lilliputters Guild's Summer Tour.
Situated just outside Abergavenny, Llantilio Pertholey church was begun in the 12th century, although it is possible that Christian worship has been practiced on this site since the 6th century (Pertholey translates as ‘Defiled Entrance’, and is possibly a reference to early Christian martyrs).
The tower dates from the 1300s, and contains a ring of six bells. The oldest of these, the Tenor, dates from c.1520 and was cast by Thomas Gefferies of Bristol. They are a perfectly pleasant, albeit somewhat average peal; they were, however, an ideal post-lunch tower; straightforward to ring (apart from the ancient tenor, which felt chunky and needed considerable encouragement to get moving!), and crystal clear both inside and out. The original four bells were rehung in 1994, when Taylors of Loughborough replaced the ancient oak frame and replaced the existing treble (now third) with a new bell; the previous bell was retired, and now serves as a Compline (Sanctus) bell. The following year, April 1995, the project to augment to six was finally realised, with two new bells cast and installed, also by Taylors.
