In this video I check out Portal 64 made by ‪@james.lambert‬. This is a demake of Portal made by valve for Nintendo 64 N64
This demake was played on an everdrive 64 and recorded using a GV-USB2.

Contrary to popular opinion, the N64 was an absolute beast. The only reason games tended to look so bad on them was because cartridges cost a ton, so most companies couldn't afford large textures or detailed models. Needless to say, portal has comparatively simple models, reuse a ton of textures, and their textures are usually solid colours with noise slapped on top, so if you really needed to you could save space by generating a noise map on boot and storing it on the save file or in RAM. It also helps that the N64 was the first console with a Z-Buffer and the only one of its generation.

I always thought N64 games looked a lot better than PS1 games.

Also ps1 had the problem of floating points that lead to all those early games stlye of vibrating triangles (like in spyro). Thing was that with a larger and cheaper file storage of cds they could make more games

This isn’t the only reason, a tiny texture cache, and very bad memory latency make it impossible for the N64 to really take full advantage of its hardware. Nintendo kinda got duped by the people selling RDRAM, if they had gone with cheaper RAM it would have actually improved performance, ironically.

@@spondylus4784 integer precision was the problem, not floating point. The PS1 had no floating point hardware.

This port reminded me of that episode of SpongeBob SquarePants where Bob invites Squidward to his house and it is an exact replica of it.

Really good content. I just bought the n64 pikachu system so I’m a n64 hack binge. I got super 64. Pokémon crystal clear and pm black pit in n64 cartliges. , gonna get xeno crises next month
Hopefully someone makes quake with all the new levels some day
