  • Visiting the River Gelt in Gelt woods today which is very similar to the Strid at Bolton Abbey but on a much smaller scale. I also show you an interesting fact about the Romans 1800 years ago from this very location. Channel updates too as a thank you for all the amazing support since my more frequent uploads!

That looks so much like the Strid. I noticed the same types of rock formations and potholes, and "wrinkled" look to the brownish water. It looks deep here too. It's too bad you can't get closer to find out how deep this is. Britain certainly has some fascinating geology. I just subscribed to your channel btw, and really enjoy the research you are doing. The Strid is my new obsession and I think yours is my favorite Strid channel.

Hey I was in one of those quarries in Gelt Woods about 25 years back (a pal lived at Hallbankgate at The Howard). There was an inscription from the 2nd Legion Aug on one of the faces of the quarry. I'm sure it mentioned Agricola. I lost the photo (it was a 'real' photo, printed at Boots and taken before I had a digital camera!). Can you go and get back and do some filming of Roman Graffiti in Gelt Woods quarry? It will save me from having to travel so far South again.

The Roman connection is incredible. How they went all the way up to Scotland and built the first roads than interconnected all the celtic tribes and the first peoples who arrived in the UK, presumably Celts from Iberia. I still remember some of the Roman stories that a scottish tyour guide told me as we walked around Stirling castle. He told me that 1 in 16 British men still carry the transalpine gene, descended from the Roman garrisons stationed around the country... 2000 years ago (madness).

Cheers on the channel's take off. The strid was definitely a good starting point, I agree with your projected direction. Maybe something to keep in mind, we're all taught these facts about such and such date in history, but what you just showed about a quarried location and the stone went to Hadrian's wall ... Some ONE had to make those chisel marks ... I think more of that kind of scope can keep things interesting and fresh while being able to vary content. Best from Ohio

It’s worth checking out the Roman History of the Wharfe, the Romans had a goddess of the Wharfe, Verbeia. A statute of her was found in the river at Ilkley which is about 5 or 6 miles below the Strid and is now on show in the parish church. It is thought that the Strid had an influence on the establishment of the deity. Some also believe that she became the goddess of all rivers in the Roman Empire. Ilkley was the site of a Roman Fort known as Olicana, but recent research suggests that Olicana was in fact just West of Skipton and the fort in Ilkley was named Verbeia after the goddess

I know this place as well as I know the Strid... nice area!
I was born in West Yorkshire and lived there most of my life but the last place I lived in the UK was Great Corby, just outside Carlisle. I sometimes cycled to this spot and I walked through this valley many times!
Much further upstream, there's a small waterfall where I used to watch the salmon jumping. One day a salmon lept out and bounced off my knee!
Re the wild swimming, my favourite places for swimming up there were a few spots along the river Eden, the deepest pools in the river Derwent, above Grange, and at Crammel Linn waterfall.
I expect you know the cliff that people jump off into the Eden... just above Armathwaite? Some great spots for swimming along that stretch. Some nice little sandy beaches too.

Cool! Ace channel 🙌. Finland here. What I'd love to see is a full Strid drone flyover. And how about sending a tethered sub drone through as much as possible?

Hi, Just stumbled on your channel today and it's amazing. Subscribed immediately.
I love the experiments you're doing at the Strid, but I also notice you mentioning struggling with your equipment almost being ripped out of your hand a couple of times.
Please invest in some safety equipment. It would suck for you to become national news and yet another statistic a week later.
You can get a climbing harness, sling, some rock nuts and carabiners for around £200 I recon. It ain't cheap but it's cheaper than your life.

Congratulations on the success! I would reckon that the bronze and iron age peoples of the area must have had a fear of, and perhaps reverence for the Strid.

Good stuff. These days when I go wild swimming I wear a 3/4 wetsuit it means i can stay in the water longer and its much more comfortable. When I was a younger man It didn't bother me so much. still good fun though!

We love you Jack and respect you for the work you put in. I read everything can get my hands on and have an insane hunger for knowledge, but somehow had never heard of the strid! I love the geography in your videos and being from the US,we don't have the rich history as you do in the areas that you feature in your videos.

Sounds like a good plan, Jack. Don't miss out the N Yorks Moors for camping vids, as you asked Newtondale makes quite a study.
And don't sell the channel with promise of snacks and then leave them out of your future. I've watched three so far and not so much as a Wotsit!
    cheers from Middlesbrough.

Hahaha i didn't even think about the snack thing. It was just something a friend of mine used to call me that stuck! But you make a great point i might have to start a little snack feature in each video

Subscribed. Also if you could try to find small signs of history around the places you visit and document them. The Graffiti at the quarry was super interesting. I will gladly watch you visit these sites of historical significance while on adventures like this.

hello Jack a snack, enjoying your videos. If your looking for interesting places the one nearish you i can think of is Gaping Gill look at braford pothole club gg winch meet . Another one at my end of the country is the Mixon hole which you may need a boat for but has similar reputation to the Strid for having down force the pulls to the bottom of the hole there is also supposed to be under water cave there. hope this might be useful for you.

I like that you are going to do a variety of things. Too many creators get stuck in a niche so far they lose the spark when someone is enjoying what they do. Camping sounds fun!

I grew up next to a micro strid in summer the stream can go in a 12 inch pipe, it flows down a single notch carved into bedrock less than a foot wide and 3 feet deep. In flood it's about 6 feet deep and has the force to sweep a car away roll it until flattened and sweeps along enough rock that in a 100 yr flood in constricted areas typically where some stupid human put in a road and bridge, it over tops the bridge by several feet and the rock hammers off all the steel railing asphalt paving leaving just the pocked reinforced concrete behind. So, plenty of force over the millennia to carve out channels in bedrock, even our tiny stream. I saw quite a few circular holes cut into rock. fyi that's from a rock or two getting stuck in a crevice banging around in the current until it makes a circular hole and gets used up then another washes in repeat. Wish we had some of those at our micro strid but maybe just not big enough. We do have 3 levels of water falls to play under, big plunge pool at the bottom and at the top a small plunge pool that the folks that lived next to it used to use as a summer 'bath tub' (wearing suits of course). A few miles away is a rock cut canyon 1000 feet deep starting with a waterfall. I've never been down there but 1,000s a yr do and only a few don't come back, most simply fall down cliff but one or two manage to drown. But, that's water. There is a stream about 2 x the one above below the strid where a few folk die every year in the gee, class 1 maybe 2 rapids they 'shoot' in big old truck tires with some netting in them for a bottom. I don't think it's as much the swirling water as the six pack of beer floating along tied to the tube. But people even manage to cripple themselves doing stupid human stuff on the mountains, ice climbing, cliff climbing, getting too close to edge for some dumb reason.
Your camping idea is cool, and I'll check out your finding waterfalls.
If you ever come to NE US in summer remember, rattle my chain, you can use the old family place to explore the water ways and mountains.

    • @jackasnacks
      @jackasnacks  3 года назад +3

Yeah theres only so far i can go as 1 person but tthe more views the strid gets the more likely it is that someone with a lot more money or even a public company might be willing to throw some funding at it. Even if the results aren't on my channel i would still love for some elaborate project to start there in the form of a documentary!
