    Always thought the 88's were overlooked when the Magnums arrived. Almost 30 yrs, still feel our 2wd 5288 was one the sexiest tractors ever made

    YES!! Nice tractor. I think the 88 series is the best looking tractor ever. I think the 88 kinda started the enclosed engine look. When my dad was farming we had a 1086 ih, 1486 ih, 1896 case ih and 7140 case ih. Never had an 88 but my uncle had a 5488 and I was lucky enough to run that a few times. It had the western interior, it was really cool looking. Nothing kills a deere like a Magnum!!

    If your tractor has the tri-6 transmission, it might be worth your time to run the serial number over to your Case IH dealer, and have them check to see if its had the update kit installed.

    I loved ours. I was torn between the 1466 and the new one. It took me a bit to get used to the shifting because of the difference. We put a chrome stack on ours also. They look so much better than green. Lol

    I had a 5288. Loved it but it kept going into neutral. The dealer I bought it from said they would fix it. I had it about four years when first crop hay I decided to fix it myself. I thought it was the control modal. Cost me over $800. I also put an eliminator on the exhaust pipe. Went to baling hay in the morning and it worked great. It also sounded like a big mean tractor. That night my son went to finish baling the hay. My wife and I went to town to get something. On our way back my son called and. Said the tractor was on fire. We could see the flames from town. We hurried home and the fire department had it mostly out. Completely burned to the ground. Apparently there was a short that made the modual stop everything. Then the short would come from being short and you could work for an hour or more. The new modual would not shut down which cause the harness get hot and melt that started the fire. It started right underneath the cab. Once the flames melted the stupid plastic fuel tank that was all she wrote. We had a fire extinguisher but wasn’t big enough. The dealer I bought it from said they had a 7120. Four wheel drive. Spendy but I have loved it for over twenty years.

    If maintained they can be good. Lots of farmers just work em hard minor maintenance eh mind the tranny pressure sensors under the cab Had two units that occasionally lost hi or low range. Easy fix though. 😊

    Woo son look at that beauty. The 5488 is a great worker, just watch out for the PTO they tend to lock up after 100 hours of use if you don’t grease them frequently I know my 5488 does. And the 4 wheel linkage when engaged you’ll be lucky to get about 500 hours of use before something breaks or doesn’t engage l. Also keep an eye on the sentry light. That’s one issue I had with mine when I first purchased it a few years ago. Runs great when it’s cold then about a hour or 2 it turns on. Hopefully y’all won’t have any issues with yours. Looks really nice Farmer Grayce

    • @jerhalco
      @jerhalco 3 года назад +2

      There was a change in the way the MFD engaged! . Look at your serial #. Sentry is a good system, just make sure you have a good ground from left battery. Also don’t ever use the test wire instead of sentry that some use for long periods. Check out Mike At Triple R tractors, he is a good resource.

    First thing's first.... a 5488 with a muffler is a crime. It's straight pipe or don't even bother. Also, it may tug like a beast, but watch your notion of disk duty. Big finishing disk is fine, just don't sink a heavy one to the spools behind a 40yr old collectible tractor and later find out a bunch of CNH parts no longer exist. My family's 5288 4-post canopy is my favorite tractor ever, but there are parts on it you can't just go buy.
