Wow-I have never heard this before! This is ethereal-just exquisite. Tony's guitar is sublime and what can I say about Allan's Heaven-sent voice? Magnificent performance-they do Procol Harum proud.
When I got to know this cover - I didn't even know the year (1990) - I was strongly doubtful. But when starting listening to this here in RUclips, the cover I haven't heard ever before, I was astonished! What a cover, wow, it's still a great song in the hands of the Hollies, and in the year of 1990, congratulations to the fine band still going strong, at least in 1990...!
The Hollies is a fantastic band, with great songs, and incredible vocals, listening to them makes me feel that much closer to heaven, they are one of many bands that we don't hear from anymore, at least on the radio stations here in N.Y., who remembers the other great bands from our past that many has forgotten about ?????????
+Pamela Michaels Just suggesting that you try Writing on the wall if you haven't heard it yet, I thinks it's as good as The air that I breathe and he aint heavy
Pamela check out a band that NEVER got the attention it deserved: Be Bop Deluxe. Or listen to Bill Nelson's "For Andrew" and have your mind blown. He is just one of the greatest rock guitarists ever
I was on the Germany 1990 tour in 3 concerts. the Hollies played this super great song in all concerts from this tour. For myself on this tour I saw the Hollies at theire best. This version is much better than the original. The Hollies have always been my favorite band + this fantastic lead singer Allan Clarke. Harmony vocals at his best.
i didn't know this version of "a whiter shade of pale" sung by the hollies, but i loved it! alan clarke and his incredible voice followed my childhood, teen time and grown up time, too. and it's gonna last forever. i miss him. thanks. antonio rodrigues.
Are you fucking serious? ''One of the most underrated bands''? You obviously know NOTHING about music with a stupid comment like that! The hollies were big all over the world. In the top three of any UK group and in the worlds top 5 acts ever. They sold many millions and played to packed houses wherever they went. Today's Hollies are nothing without Allan Clarke. Allan WAS The Hollies and that is how it will always be. I won't listen to the replacement. I heard him once and was embarrassed how poor he was. All I can say to fans of the group without Allan in it is '' YOU ARE ALL EASILY PLEASED''. And you are.
kevvome- I thought they were underexposed, at least by radio stations, or their managers. They are my favorite group, period. LOVE Allan's vocals, such a wide singing style, depth and power, so distinctive. SO SAD he retired, I miss him.
OK, thanks. I just got the dvd and now I know it was "The Hollies" who sung "He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother" FIRST. Plus, it went #1..... before "The Osmonds" did it. That Allen has a beautiful unique voice that I have never heard before.
I used to see the Hollies in Stockport before they ever made a record, fantastic, makes me sad to see the old photos 'cos I realise that was the best time of my life, and it's gone forever, but i,ve got my memories. Dave Moore
I love The Hollies. I had no idea this version of the song existed, and I love the way it opens with the arpeggio guitar and the signature countermelody stated with the vocals instead of the organ. I almost wish they didn't use the organ at all and ONLY stated the line with the vocals.
Wikipedia lists this 1990 line-up... Allan Clarke - lead vocals, guitar, harmonica Alan Coates - vocals, guitar, banjo Tony Hicks - vocals, guitars, banjo, mandolin, bass, sitar, keyboards Steve Stroud - bass Bobby Elliott - drums Dave Carey - keyboards Fantastic performance, gentlemen!
It is the flow of beautiful music. Again, I thought blue shadow is the universal. Performance of the Hollies is also good. I'll charmed. Heart is washed away - is feeling.
Procol Harum are one of the greatest artistic pop & rock bands (very poetic & Baroque in style) who recorded one of the greatest ever singles with A.W.S.O.P. They followed this with another great single "Homburg" - some beautiful & superb albums and were "great live". I can testify twice to that. I saw the Hollies live as well during the early ninetees - Clarkie up front and all the gang bar Graham. They too were tip top although "Pale" wasn't then included in the set. Procol's version of this number (their own composition by the way) will ALWAYS be the best. But the Hollies have at least been clever (using their trademark 3 pt harmony) and brave as well - in knocking out their own "live version" & highly respectful cover. There is even a strident organ kicks in towards the end in a nod towards the original. Quality yes - but nobody has ever topped Procol Harum's tour de force - never will.
They were and still are one of the best harmonic groups that ever existed.
Never heard the Hollies do this song until tonight. They were one of the best British groups ever. Pity I only saw them twice.
The blending/harmony is unbeatable.
Allan 's voice is hauntingly soulful.
Best version for me.
Thanks Hollies !
Yes hauntingly beautiful is certainly a fantastic description of this great song
Had no idea they covered this. Hollies added something. Thank you. @@paulahunt2737
Not even close to the original. The original voice and keyboards blow this away.
Procol Harum's original is still unbeatable, but I bet that this Hollies version is one of the best covers I 've ever heard.
Allan's voice is an astonishing beauty, wonderful!
Clarkes' voice, still one of the best
Great cover! No group can harmonize as well as The Hollies with Allan Clarke singing lead!
Wow-I have never heard this before! This is ethereal-just exquisite. Tony's guitar is sublime and what can I say about Allan's Heaven-sent voice? Magnificent performance-they do Procol Harum proud.
The Hollies, one of the best groups that should have been on top of those greats groups list ever ✌🏻👍🏻
They kinda were right?? Kinda?
Canzoni eterne che non smetteremo mai di ascoltare, bellissime

Pamela Michaels Helen Frischer

As a big Hollies fan I never heard them do this before! It has the usual ultra tight harmonies! It's simply superb.
I started listening to the hollies in the 60"s and always thought they were underrated.

yes you are- listen to it 5X, and ask why it didn't sell 100 million copies.
Are you fucking serious?
''One of the most underrated bands''?

Not sure One of The Greatest Bands of all time can e under-rated. In the UK THEY were The Bands BAND. ie all big bands went to Hollies gigs.
😊 Hoping you've caught up with his new album, Resurgence 😊
Allan's voice is a scandal of beauty.!!!
The sound of the gods!!!
Amazing vocals arrangement and out-of-this-world vocal interpretation.
I just LOVE this version! Thanks for posting this gem.
Beautiful cover of Procol Harum's 1967 classic.

Perfect, just perfect!
This song is very calming..
What a voice
Wow, that was something else! I *really* hope Allan Clarke does a final tour with the Hollies.
The odds of that happening is about one in a trillion. But it would be so wonderful.
Thanks for this. The Hollies make this song their own, and Allan's voice is as spectacular as ever!
la musica de esta cancion me llena de nostalgia y me lleva a un viaje hacia atras.

Beautiful performance!

It is the flow of beautiful music. Again, I thought blue shadow is the universal. Performance of the Hollies is also good. I'll charmed. Heart is washed away - is feeling.

So totally agree!
Love this beautiful version of the Hollies
Diddo, never heard this before, love everything they do!
