He has absolutely no defensive ability or workrate and 20 years ago that would have been fine because you'd play him behind a quick striker like Bergkamp/Henry type partnership and watch the goals. These days it's just not possible. There's a reason Madrid sold him.

Xabi Alonso - one of the most intelligent yet also hardworking footballers of our time, and will most likely be a top manager in the mold of Pep Guardiola if he ever manages a top team in the future. His defense-splitting passes were out of this world, yet he was also very solid defensively as a DM. A slightly rougher version of the great Andrea Pirlo if you ask me (and that is a very, very good thing).

I feel like I went to a fancy coffee shop around 3 to 5pm, ordered an espresso per hour whilst there and just chatted with Xabi about football the whole time and at the end of the meeting he said “I’ve got it” and paid for the whole thing. In reality I watched an 8 min video of Xabi explaining his function on the field and that is the wonderful thing about this video, it doesn’t have anything “complex” in its production/composition but is a perfect piece of content. Counting the days for something like this with Pirlo.
As an Arsenal fan, Xabi has always been my favourite player outside my team; even during his Liverpool days. Very dynamic and incredible range. Then his Madrid stint happened and i felt he became even more complete. Great video and fantastic insight.

One of the best midfielders, ever. So underrated still, amazing passer, could control the tempo of almost any game perfectly. You don't play and win trophies as a first teamer for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern if your not special, and was an integral part of the Spanish team that won it all. Amazing!
Such a versatile player no wonder every coach wanted him, I hope people can understand how difficult it is to switch positions in a pro team and adapt to different leagues and coaches' tactics. I think his best asset is Alonso's ability to read information and the game, he is without a doubt one of the best midfielders of our generation, and this is coming from a Barca fan.
Cause of this man I transitioned from a purely attacking mid who had no defensive awareness at all, to a more centralized position that required me to make tackles and interceptions. It's so satisfying to score from outside the box or send in a through pass to an attacker, but the satisfaction you get from cutting up the opponent's play is a unique feeling, you feel like Gandalf lol

Xabi was a fantastic player and obviously a Liverpool legend after his exploits in Istanbul 2005. When we consider all the great Managers he's played for in his career, then if he's even half as good as a Coach/Manager then he will be awesome.
