      Neither Moorgate, 1975. Sad. I was a London commuter then, but not on that train. They conjectured that it was a suicide. Domestic terror -- I dread the thought, but situations can come from anywhere, anyhow, from legitimate people with legitimate jobs.

      It's the same in any customer-facing job. The rudeness that comes out of these people because they are inconvenienced for a short period of time is unbelievable. I witnessed a customer chew out a colleague to the point my colleague broke down, over her stating they couldn't accept card payments at her til and the customer was running late for something and didn't have enough cash. There was a cash machine less than 10 meters away from where she stood, she'd have passed it on the way in and the "No cards" sign was clearly visible as you joined the queue. The customer began to rant and rave, calling the cashier stupid and incompetent. Apparently, the customer's lack of awareness and tardiness is the cashier's fault?
      These people absolutely deserve a commendation for keeping their cool.

    10:44 or instead of slagging off the staff (who do in fact know what they're doing considering they go through months and months of training), you could jump on one out of the six buses to Victoria, Oxford Circus, Hyde Park Corner or Piccadilly Circus, or jump in a cab to Westminster or Bond Street, and go from either one of those stations. Will be quicker than you stood there moaning about it.

      I imagine the man has one or more mental health issues that cause him to have fast and mumbly/slurred speech, which is then compounded by the tendency for those who are nervous to speak faster. Here's a rough transcription - there are bits at the start and end that are simply unintelligible.
      Customer: Something like "so is there a 100% walkout is there?" or "have they got a 100% walkout have they?" repeated 3 times, ending with simply "100% walkout?"
      Staff: "yeah, but- yeah, yeah."
      C: "because last time they have 3 or 4 lines working last time, didn't they?"
      S: "yeah, yeah, there's none working this time."
      C: "none at all?"
      S: "no, no."
      C: "why's that?"
      S: "because we've got no drivers."
      C: "they're all fat idiots aren't they?"
      S: "well, no... it's their right, isn't it?"
      C: "yeah, but... I know, but the thing is though, what's it going to get them though? [unintelligible]"

But I guess they used DV technology which was poor at that time instead of using older, but more fleshed out analogue film for their TV brocast programmes.. I really appreciate the transit drivers here going on strike but doing it in waves so passengers weren’t completely screwed. First few days was just them refusing to wear uniforms. I must say that seeing them in plain clothes was kind of nice. So more laidback and they seemed happier. The next wave was refusal to fix breakdowns. They really wanted to give the union time to negotiate before being forced to walk off the job. They were forced to but by that time, the passengers were on the driver’s side and things were pretty calm. I didn’t even notice the strike happening or when it ended. That really was a great way to strike. It didn’t affect the public much and the workers got what they wanted.

    Its quite funny watching the management come to the realisation that the people who work in the station everyday actually do a difficult job quite well. Management should always come to site and listen to the staff on the ground. The moment you start ignoring the workers things start to unravel.

    this episode is the answer to why automatic ticket dispensers were installed. The whole process will be automated as much as possible, that way even in the case of a strike, the system will function , if only on a skeleton crew of scabs.

      What about the drivers

    • @AndrooUK
      @AndrooUK Год назад

      @@rookaloot4736 Autonomous trains will take over all those jobs. It's already happening all over with fully self-driving trains on a number of 'closed' networks that don't interact with roads, and have station screens/barriers so people can't go on to tracks.
      Improvements will sort that out so trains and trams can be retrofitted or replaced so they don't need drivers even when interacting with roads and ungated tracks where animals or people could wander onto them. Throw in monitoring cameras or technology to keep an eye on the tracks so the train could stop even before it is in view of a problem.
      You can have conductors wandering around the train, or Police/security, but computers will do all the grunt work. Contactless ticketing, billing direct to your debit card or account, modern services don't need humans at all to operate anything passengers interact with, so you can do an entire trip without having to talk to anyone. 😅
      Humans will just be customer service, and cleaning up, then some maintenance for stations and trains. Robots will take over those jobs too, to save money.
      Of course, this will take time, but it will happen... and we'll invite it because we always want to save money and improve services. We'll also resent it because unskilled and low skilled workers will be out of work or competing heavily for higher skilled jobs.

    5:47 Depends on who you're asking, an old lady (70ish) once started shoutinging about how incompetent my local train personel were, because they had to cancel multiple departures, because of heavy ice and snow AND a fallen tree on the tracks, police had to come and escort her away.

    Kinda confused about the lack of an actual alarm in the station, that buzzing sound didn't alarm a single bystander, that's how fires become deadly.

    • @adlerweb
      @adlerweb 5 лет назад +2

      That's not uncommon - in most public places you won't find a loud alarm as long as there is no imminent danger for the passengers/visitors life. It's usually much safer to get them out step by step wit a lot of staff in place to guide and calm them. Loud alarms always causes a lot of people who aren't used to alarms like this to panic and get themselves or others hurt.

      Nice try, but that cannot happen in the UK because offering free travel is not an alternative to industrial action. It is a breach of the employee's contracts and they can get fired for doing so.

      So, they went to work, got paid, but didn't do their jobs? They just did what they felt like doing and not what they agreed with a contract to do?
      That's not admirable behaviour. What else were they not bothering to do? Something that affected safety?

Back then webpages were simpler and not stuffed with crap like they are now and don't get me started on Facebook, the curse of the modern world. Reality TV was also in its infancy and I think the music of the time was better than now. I listen to a lot of 2000s music.
