@@zakkmylde1712 I love that these two games just go hand-in-hand. Because in the first one heroes give people jobs at their place, in the second villains take people's jobs at their place. It's beautiful, when you think about it like that.

I love to think that Olag was never intended to have this pivotal a role in the story, but he slowly grew in plot significance until the point that Brennan was like: "It is time."
Brennan said the final battle was supposed to be all of them fighting each other over the crown but he had to bring back Olag at the last minute because he didn't anticipate the evil party teaming up and giving the crown to the baby.

The little comments like this is what makes Brennan such a fun DM. He always is on the players side, pushing the game to be fun and engaging for everyone. He has a “yes and/yes but” approach that I’ve never seen him abandon. When he has to say no he explain what the player could do instead or proposes a fair middle ground.
Impeccable DM that everyone should draw inspiration from.
You can always tell if the PCs have succeeded before Brennan tells them with his little 'hell yeah!' And I love it

I love how Erika RP'd Lillith so much. Just the implications where she seems to know so many of her children and their interests off the bat ("She's a design major!") is so heartwarming. She's a good mom, even if she wasn't very sympathetic when a few of the smaller ones died.

That’s just how spiders do! Lots of spider babies die, and a few of them survive to grow up.
Also, something about her vocal decisions just scream 'pedipalps' in this series. I keep finding myself wondering what it is about her voice that so clearly flags as 'spider lady' to me

Watching Matt get his ass kicked this whole side quest must be super cathartic for the critical role players.
After Sokhbar got a blessing, i realize they could have chosen jeramiee as the avatar of evil. then the world would fear the new dark lord which just so happens to be THEE last scream beast and thus that fear would result in jeramiee birthing hordes of scream beasts.

There are three different entirely separate birthing events, five if you count Lilith and the Lavamog
I like to imagine Lilith is constantly nonstop giving birth to thousands of spiders,so pump those numbers up
There's six at least. J'er'em'ih gave birth twice (in episode 1 and episode 6), then with the Lavamog having its babies, Maggie giving birth to Leiland Jr, Sokhbarr giving birth to Hork, and Lilith popping out her babies an indeterminate amount of times, that's 6 at the very least
Quick question, at 1:55:45 when Leland takes damage, shouldn't his armor of agathys do damage?
@@shamalamadingleberry7203 armor of agathys only works until your temporary hit points are gone, then you stop dealing damage everytime someone hits you. So no I don't think so
@@kyleparker613 While armor of agathys does give 5 extra hit points per spell slots it's cast at, the duration of the spell lasts for one hour.

Underrated moment: when Erika hands Matt All the d10s and everyone just goes "ah, Vampire."
I'm guessing that was because she regularly plays World of Darkness settings which are a D10 system(Specifically Vampire; The Masquerade)... It also explains her RP heavy play, as WoD is a Storyteller system and is RP focus over system focus... It was also pretty out of context so alot of people probably missed it or didn't understand it
@@Metal_Slyme I always thought Vampire required a metric ton of d10s just in general since it's the only die you really need for 95% of the game. I didn't realize it was a particular set of rules I was playing by
@@TitoMcFadden yeah, all ability checks are d10's at least in V5 (which is what LA by Night uses, i think it's true for older systems but I've never ran those), so an ability check adds your skill and your attribute totals and you roll that many. So if you're super buff and also really well trained in fighting, you could be rolling 10d10 (and then all above like a 6 are a success, and you count number of successes). And it does have a more RP focus, like in the new game theres a thing with combat where DM's are encouraged to kind of ask what the goals of everyone are if combat runs more than 3 rounds, so that it doesn't get bogged down if people aren't enjoying the combat aspect. It is also exclusively theater of the mind style vs miniatures.

Can we talk about how dope Ify is as a Role player and listener
I mean, his roleplaying was fearless and committed the whole way through. It takes real creativity to come up with the solutions he chose. Abusing the rules like this is what I hope to encourage in my players. At higher levels, most rogues would struggle with large battles like this, especially if they were wounded. Not Markus though.
The only disappointing thing that happened is that what he wanted to happen didn't completely happen. When he made that deal with one of the nameless beings he also said that he was evil for wanting to take away Efink's desire, which was to be the new keeper. So what he wanted was for Olag to be forced to be the keeper and never die and make it so Efink would not be confined to the role of the keeper, even though that's what she wanted. So kinda sad that that didn't happen.
@@ChunkyCoffee I mean, that's on Brennan but I do understand the rationale, I mean the keeper is supposed to be incredibly powerful, and he didn't want to undercut Efink's moment. Making Olag the keeper would have been less dramatic. It would undercut the stakes dramatically.
@@ChunkyCoffee I think Brennan made the right call on this one. As a DM, you will often come across moments where one player wishes to make some grand dramatic gesture or sacrifice as Efink did, only to have another character attempt to immediately undercut or undo that move. It's a tightrope for any DM to walk, but making sure that both players actions have impact without one cancelling the other is the goal, and Brennan did so masterfully.

Some sort of a variant of the ''get away from my bones'' guy would be the greatest thing of all time.
nanahcuB nimajneB based on his NADDPOD appearance, he’s very chaotic with RP and character choices, but also, he understands the rules of combat very well and uses that to just do a ridiculous amount of damage. When he was on NADDPOD, he played with the gunslinger subclass that Matt made.
How the hell do they manage to make 3 hours of 1 encounter the most interesting, creative, character-driven, dramatic, hilarious, and memorable story ever? I'm gonna miss this cast, they ought to do a reunion where they go over some epilogue stuff, Leiland Jr training under Lilith and Maggie to rule, Leiland killing Hamhead, Markus taking the throne, Sohkbar and the 13 scream beasts returning to the bog, Efink chilling with Olag, and Leiland and Markus meeting up
Because they proved that friendship can be evil in its own way. Especially when they decided to gang up on those simps and covered each other with their powers.
Proves evil can be cooperative and effective too yup.

Because 1. an awesome DM who has a fantastic base story and can improvise with fantastic ideas on the fly and 2. an equally awesome group of players who will not only react to situations but build on them by talking with each other.
Most groups will just respond to the DM and not actively try to create relationships with the other players. Which is not a slight against casual D&D players because that's super freaking hard to do with strangers.
I love how much the PCs love John Feathers. This random giant eagle who Brennan had no plans for and a PC did something insane and suddenly he's a major character. PCs *always* do that; latch onto the most random NPCs - ones you just had *nothing* for. I think it's because it's something that can *only* happen in D&D. It gives them such joy to go, "I can literally talk to anyone, and *I* can *choose* to *make* them important because they're important to me."
That's so awesome.
Also, it's so perfect for this evil campaign, highlighting how bullshit the eagles were in LotR. Here we get the inverse, and it shows how sucky Good is. Psh. Lame. Evil's got cookies. And *John Fucking Feathers!*

I love how the absolute majority of NPCs’ deaths is just caused by falling to their deaths, either by burning in lava, plummeting from the skies or just falling into nothingness for the rest of eternity
When he fake outs Jason falling into the pit, he has all six of them literally hanging on his words like a cliff edge, so entertaining to watch Matt's reaction
That's a smooth save there Matthew. "J'er'em'ih is my favorite companion pet that's ever existed." moment to realize what he said "Except for Trinket." Yeah, that's right. Laura is terrifying and she isn't even there. Still, I agree J and Trinket are the best ranger companions ever.
But also, I think after playing several Oneshots as Trinket himself, he'd be especially attached to this bear

i plug this show to anybody that loves dnd or adventure gaming. brennan is truly one of, if not the best, DM in the world right now.
Same here and I can unequivocally say that on an episode by episode basis I am more entertained by D20 than I am by CR. That being said, I will always have a man crush on Liam O Brien.
I watch so many online DnD games (both as entertainment and to inspire my own games).
And Matt and Brennan are in a league of their own for entertainment and storytelling.
My other favourites are Deborah Ann Woll, Monty Martin, Matt Colville, Murph... So many others, but Brennan and Matt top the leaderboard.

Brennan did an absolutely amazing job bringing this story to a satisfying close despite all the twists and turns that kept getting added into the story, I loved every second of it! Everyone played their characters sooo well and after all those shenanigans, it's a miracle none of the PCs died! I'm so happy cause there were some really close calls, I was on the edge of my seat! Hilarious, crazy, wholesome and evil! I wish there was more to see, but alas here is the end. Thank you for uploading this wild ride to RUclips for everyone to enjoy! I will definitely be back to rewatch this in future, but for now, onto the Reunion with the Cast!

that's because these guys avoided one of the big traps that a lot of evil campaigns fall into, the trap of everyone going 'screw you all, I'm only in this for myself' and then the entire campaign falls apart.

@@Rembanspellsong had this happen with my second campaign ever. By the end the game stopped and the players were in a screaming match because one guy robbed everyone in the night and I didn't know how to deal with it
I just finished this and I can't believe that I'm going to add a new alignment possibility to my own game: Wholesome Evil. You don't have to be at each other's throats! You can destroy the forces of good and light... TOGETHER.
Me: spends three years making a campaign that was supposed to account for all contingency’s
My friends: *offsets the entire campaign in three turns till its unrecognizable*
Plan the first 2 sessions.
Think about the ending in general terms (so you can drop in some foreshadowing).
Adapt everything else.
@@ashleyhoughton8592 I’ve always had specific plot points I wanted my players to hit. How they got to those plot points I try to plan out, but usually those plans are worthless. Its like, if you’ve watched Fantasy High, in the first episode Brennan needs all of the students to end up in detention. He lets the players do what they want and uses their choices to guide how he goes about making sure that they all somehow get detention.
Or like, the players need to meet up with the big bad to set up the adventure. Maybe you want it to happen in a forest, but your players are convinced the should check out the mines instead. Ok, now just have them meet this guy in the mines and then rework and swap elements from the forest and mine encounters to make it work.

Not noticing his enemy has already fallen.

Leiland was by far my most favorite character in this series. His rivalry with Hamhead was beyond amusing and the way he played the part had me laughing at every interaction.
Special shoutout to Sokhbar tho. He was another very fun character, and him remembering the "eating the stars" story from the first episode of the series made me laugh so hard. I would have never remembered that.
Also, Lilith was very creative in the way she approached her combat. Such a better way to play the game than just "I step forward and attack" every turn of every fight.
To be fair, approaches to combat depend a lot upon how the DM reacts to it. In this case the terrain and interpretation of 'Web Whip' were beneficial to creativity. Heck, any ability that can reposition an enemy would have been worth gold in this campaign.
The players are all next level to be honest, even Rekha had multiple moments of creativity.
I mean, it was a pretty one to one reference to Ungoliant devouring the light of the Two Trees. It was one of the more on the nose Tolkien references lol

I love how this series begin as an Adult swim's parody style of Lord of the Ring and ended more like Noelle Stevenson She-Ra with a lots of ships, realisations of bad past relationships and friendships arcs.

Man, I love Dimension 20 and their normal cast party, but GOSH DARNIT I NEED MORE OF THE BLOODKEEP. Markus was wicked, Leiland was adorable, Maggie was a powerhouse, Lilith is the best mom, Efink is a true prophet, and Sokhbarr and Jeremih are the beast kings

Efink choosing to kill and replace the Necro-Boatman might be my favorite PC power move in D20 history. It comes out of *absolute nowhere* but makes total sense for the character once it's out there, the narrative logic is exquisite, and Brennan could only ever have seen that coming if the exact same idea had independently occurred to him while he was planning the encounter -- it doesn't hinge on any specific spell or ability he could possibly have been able to account for. (I do love and cherish every single instance of players wrecking his shit through brilliantly applied rules lawyering, but managing to out-plot-twist the plot twister on a pure conceptual level? God tier.)

Hard to compare since J'Er'em'ih is a homebrew creature that is butt ugly. So, I grant that he might be the best homebrew companion pet, but Trinket=best real companion.

a lot of how badly Trinket sucked falls on Laura, who openly admitted she kept forgetting to actually increase his stats as they leveled up. Trinket was usually fighting a few levels under what he should have been able to do.

I like to think that Brennan can actually cast thaumaturgy and he makes the sound effects, they are not actually added in post (post production folks, I know it's actually you - you are doing an incredible job and bringing this stuff to life!).

I know this is a pretty old comment, but I just got around to watching this series, and I totally agree. I think Brennan just had too much going on and couldn't keep track of everything. Pretty sure this story was supposed to go a pretty different direction than it did, so there was a lot of improvising that just made him either forget or maybe not fully understand.
I think brennan actually understood it, but marcus didn’t make the persuasion dc of 30 so brennan had to make something up so he could do the cool shit marcus is asking while simultaneously not do it, so he opted to just instead of efink and olag switching places, he’d make olag be literally undying instead
Actually another comment above addressed this. Brennan set the DC to 30 in the first place because Efink was dead set on becoming the new boatman. To balance what both players wanted, Brennan chose to ultimately side with Efink’s decision, but also gave Marcus great agency with getting the blessing and getting rid of Olag (falling in perpetual undeath like Marcus wanted in the first place). So Marcus achieved 2/3 things he wanted in his turn, 3/4 if we count the incredible move he pulled getting out of falling. When players want different things, balancing what they each want and having them both walk away happy, that’s mastery right there. Dungeon mastery.

I really enjoyed this series for a lot of reasons: 1) watching Matt step into a player role to Brennan's DM was amazing, 2) watching Matt and Brennan help Rekha learn how to play was very rewarding, 3) Ify and his pirating ass was about the most Ify thing I've seen in years, 4) John "Zoot Suit and Shades" Feathers...hell yeah!, 5) Erika Iishi just totally s rewing Brennan's final boss fight upside down was amazing and 6) those rolls when they mattered most!!!!

G-d came down and essentially told her to piss off. As she flew away she became a disgusting creature and swore to lure men into lustful sins, harm pregnant women, and strangle newborns. This was all in Genesis 1. The story you know is Genesis 2 and immediately follows this story. However, it was deemed too horrifying or maybe too telling of particular undertones and became a banned book never to be woven into the bible. You can thank the Catholics for that.

Mercer's total immersion in his character is so fun and cool to watch, the added descriptions he gives his actions is so DM-like, and it would be so cool if he started to be a DM in his own right, I think he would be a great.

John and markus were so great. The inventive ways Ify used fog of war was so cool. Leiland just couldn't catch a break at all, matt did a really good job role playing a consumate loser that could come in clutch when needed. Even though Efink's motives were dubious at best, the "become boatman" moment was just brilliant. I have never wanted a halfling to die more then gelfast. I would kill to see two more campaigns spawn out of this "The hunt for Gelfast" and "Pirate shenangians feat. John Feathers as a PC."
