Whenever asked, we tell people there are 3 things you need to do before buying a vintage motorcycle:
1. Get your safety gear.
2. Take the MSF rider safety course and get your license.
3. Build a core toolbox.
Tools are critical to vintage motorcycle ownership; these machines require regular maintenance to keep them running in tip-top shape, and are necessary to restore that dream bike to showroom new.
The good news is that your toolbox does not need to be elaborate, however, it must contain some basics that every mechanic needs. Tools are an investment, period; this is why you should always buy quality tools. The money invested in quality tools will pay for itself with the amount of work that you are able to accomplish. Additionally, quality tools will always retain their value regardless of age and can be sold if need be. The acquisition of tools will be an ongoing project as long as you continue doing mechanical work: your collection of tools will slowly grow with the more advanced projects you take on. We have divided the components of a core toolbox into 6 categories of tools that you need. These tools will allow you to accomplish most jobs on your vintage Japanese motorcycle as well as other projects you might come across.
1. Sockets & Ratchets
2. Wrenches
3. Screwdrivers
4. Pliers
5. Hex Keys
6. Specialty Tools

Surprised, relative to working on vintage Hondas, no mention of importance of having a drive impact screwdriver set and JIS for Japanese Standard Screws? Love your channel and products!
Those are an absolute must. But I’m guessing KT tools doesn’t make them so it doesn’t fit the objective of the video 🤣 nothing against KT tools, they look solid
Will be covered in the specialty tools video! Category 6 was too big to fit in this video.
Have to agree, JIS screwdrivers are as important for working on Japanese bikes as Whitworth spanners are for working on British bikes.
I was thinking the exact same thing. JIS screwdrivers/bits & impact driver.
Great channel!! And, great primer for the tools you need to wrench vintage Japanese MCs! However, a mention of JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screwdrivers is a must.. Don’t use Phillips screwdrivers to remove + fasteners on Japanese made MCs….you’ll strip them. Only use JIS drivers. They’re relatively easy to find online and are available at different price-points. You’ll reduce frustration; save your fasteners and your patience.
I'm a full blown fan of CMC parts. I've almost completly restored my 1975 Honda CB 360t with CMC parts. Outstanding quality. Now I'm in the process of modifying my very cool endlosed utility trailer for not only carrying my vintage honda to rallies but also supply it with all the tools and parts I may need. I'm also going to add ac and power from a portable Honda gen, but that another story. Back to the subject.
I have purcheased some tools from CMC already and super pleased with the quality. I'm going to exclusivly use their tools for a tool box that shall be for my bike and all the parts. I've already replaced the phillips head Japaneses screws with cmc allen heads but I've still got screwdrivers (bought at cms) that are made for those screws. So. I'll buy everything I need from here. I'll not touch the tools I already have in my work shed and garage. This will be bike only and I'll add boxes for everthing and hang everything like straps, extra tires, tubes....you name it. I'll have room for a cot and tv if I choose to add AC.
This is the payoff after a couple of year journey with CMC. I'm staying with them on the tools as they've (brandon) has been straight dealing with me and has helped enormously. He says the tools are top shelf. They are top shelf.
If you're just starting out in the vintage Honda world, and you want to be able to work/or restore one. You will need these tools. Don't be fooled with, "I've got lot's of tools". It don't work that way. I found that out. Everything has a purposful tool. They ain't going to break the bank, but they will keep you from breaking your back trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
PS. About to order two large Honda decals for my trailer. Now I can pull those Harley decals off. Ha.
You guys are the best. Your videos are always super thought out and well produced. Thank you for the content!
Love you guys and your videos. I wish the shipping wasn't to expensive to the UK! Not your fault. And will still buy from you where possible! Your videos are invaluable for working on my 350(imported from texas!)
I was lucky to find 6 point craftsman combination wrenches before Sears closed.
Very nice video!
No mention of JIS screwdrivers, especially for a company focusing on classic Honda motorcycles? Otherwise great video.
Would be awesome a video explain what kinda tools you should use on every part of the cb's!!
Are you folks ever going to move outside of the CB series? I'd love some VT content.
I have a 1981 Honda Cm400a (Hondamatic) do you know where I can buy a front brake caliper, or at least a rebuild kit? thanks
At the very least I would add an impact driver and bearing puller to that list.
Those will definitely be in our specialty tools video! Category 6 has enough unique items to need its own video.
