How to Inspect your Engine Checklist: common-motor.zendesk.com/hc/e...
So last summer we were coming back from Mid-Ohio and had the unfortunate situation of blowing our shop CB550 engine due to a small oil leak. Maybe you have been in this situation before. A lot of us find ourselves here when you ride these older bikes long enough. Our solution was to pick up a used engine at a junk yard here in town so we can keep riding in the meantime. Rather than rebuild a engine that more then likely still has some miles left to go on it, we are going to open up the side covers and accessible parts of this CB550 engine to inspect and clean it before loading it into our bike.
In Part 2 of this series, we are going to show you step by step how to check the bottom end of your engine (clutch, oil pump, oil filter, stator, etc.). Regardless if you are working on a CB350, CB360, CB450, CL350 Scrambler or any other vintage Honda engine from this era, Performing these critical inspections before installing the engine in the frame will make any repairs significantly easier.

I've recently bought two CB550s..both have been in storage for a long time. One since 1991, the other since 1989. This video series will provide as a guide for me before hooking up a battery and turning the key on both of them..thanks!

Another reason for greasing gaskets, side cases especially, is that it helps keep the gasket on the inner face in place so no less chance of it shifting and getting nipped. I always do that. I think the one on my cb250rs is on its fourth go. You didn't have those in the states, lovely bikes though, basically an XL250s engine in a road frame.

That debris in the oil pan is from the cam chain tensioner. Seen it a lot. Common for Honda 4's

Meaning it is probably time to replace the cam chain tensioner?

Great tip. Not as messy as grease, which allows works.

    Why no compression check?

    My opinion
B4 u stick the engine back in
Next time do a compression test to see
The health and this way you know what
    Is next
A tear down or temporary ride
BcZ #4 cylinder might be weak

I understand the reason for doing the top end first but wouldn’t the oil wells in the head empty when you rolled the motor forward to drop the oil pan?

Why did you decide to go dry with the left side altenator/ Gen cover? Was there a reason or were you short on time and it didn’t really matter one way or the other?
