To all who thought he needs translator because he can’t speak English, he uses translator on interviews for Japanese viewers. His English isn’t perfect so he’ll use translator with coaches for accuracy, but he communicates with his teammates no problem. Ichiro did the same.
Well, if you live in a country for more than 5 years, you know you can speak their language. I lived in US for about 5+ years when I was little, I had no problem using English. Spanish and Eupropian language are close to English, but Japanese and English are two totally different language. Their mouth movements are different too. That is why Americans can't speak Japanese fluently, and Japanese can't speak English fluently (unless you live in the country while you are a kid, like I was). By the way, Ichiro also spoke Spanish with his teammates. I think Ohtani can too.

In 2022, Shohei hit 2 HR & scores 8 RBI in one game but Angels pitchers still lost 12 to 11! The next day Shohei started the game & struck out 13 and made hits, then he won the game eventually at the end! It's a shame that many people do not understand the difficulty and complexity of acquiring a language. I was born and raised in Japan, and I started to learn English at the age of 12. I was able to memorise some scripts and give speech within a year, but after 30 years, I still struggle to understand legal/financial matters in English, even though I speak English at work everyday. It completely makes sense that Ohtani didn't understand what his interpreter was saying, especially when it comes to complex matters.
When Ohtani returns to the two-way next year, I hope he doesn't keep playing in games without a break like he did with the Angels. That way he will be able to give that speech many times during his 10-year contract with the Dodgers. I trust the Dodgers will take care of his body properly.
