I started out playing percussion and drums as a kids. That made it easy to pick up the rhythm guitar playing. Like Erich says, knowing when to strum down/up based on the up/down beat is essential for making it sound right and for helping keep the rhythm. Keep in mind that you're trying to be in sync with the drums and keep the musical flow for the rest of the team.

I find rhythm guitar particularly hard on electric guitar because I can’t get the hang of muting! Easily the hardest part of making the guitar sound musical is the silencing of certain strings, which is magnified through an amp! Great advice as always, love your lessons.

I'd say as a rhythm guitarist, if you really want to develop a natural sense of rhythm, don't use a metronome. Some musicians will look at me like I have 2 heads for saying this, but the use of a metronome can really suck the individuality out of playing and make it a rigid mathematical thing, and then I hear them play and their strokes are all forced and unnatural because they are too relient on something outside of their own body to keep their playing stable
