      +Brandon Reed In his later days, Wilt didn't do it as much, so it's justifiable, but that's why people developed the nonsensical idea that he had no skill and just lumbered around the basket, because he took a bunch of knee injuries in his 30's so when the NBA started getting national TV coverage people saw a guy anchored in the paint

Marketing modern stars means that they can market a modern style of play. Had they marketed Wilt, people would tune in and see a completely different game than what Wilt was playing.

    • @Nuvendil
      @Nuvendil 4 года назад +21

      @@pearlywhites3025 Exactly. In the early 60s, basketball was a small time sport in terms of money. A lot of games weren't filmed or the film was not preserved. Now, Jordan, Harden, James, these guys are international celebrities. The NBA wants the focus to be on these guys being the greatest, because they're bringing in the money. Greatest of All Time, Greatest Scorer, etc, etc, these are marketing terms to the NBA. They want them attached to modern players whose jerseys they are selling, whose game resembles our current style the most, and whose games they have lots of good tape of.

My radio was a $5.00 hand built crystal radio set. The Bullets would of course play Wilt's team - the San Francisco Warriors. Wilt's primary shot was a fadeaway from about 12 to 14 feet from the left side of the court. He was just about automatic. That was his go to shot. Where the story came from that he just dunked is beyond me. Wilt is The GOAT in my opinion.

    Wilt wasn't just a huge, hugely strong man who was devastating near the basket.
    No. He was a fantastic athlete, with the coordination and body control of an Olympic gymnast.
    He could blast through the opposition with his dunks, AND score from a bit afar with that beautiful fadeaway jumper. Not to mention his equally subtle finger roll --

    I saw Wilt play a very few times as a kid....he was more than amazing! But, he didn't win and he despised the press.....so he was almost blackballed! It still carries today! He was AMAZING! Had he not joined the Lakers where they didn't need him to score....he would have easily had 40,000 points! I remember a game in 1973 (I think) the Lakers were coming to Phoenix and the Suns were pretty good then as they Had Connie Hawkins, Dick VanArsdale and some other young talented players. The press was VISCOUS to Wilt....saying he was washed up....and couldn't score anymore....and survived on just his size. The Suns and Hawkins were going to DESTROY the Lakers! Wilt scored 63 that night! When interviewed after the game....the reported asked his....why the big offensive explosion....his response...."Don't ever piss off the big fella! Lastly, Jerry West.....who played against Wilt and WITH Wilt....once said....Wilt was the best player to ever play.....and is isn't close....and Jerry happens to be the best Talent Executive in basketball EVER! I Trust Jerry West....Hall Of Fame....Legend and the Logo....if he says Wilt was the best...and what I saw with my own eyes....that is enough. WILT = GOAT!

    Take all your legit GOAT candidates in their primes. Put them into 2 teams to come up with a good match. Now let them do their thing... and let them shine. Let them dominate each other. Some will try to dominate in scoring (inside or outside), or rebounding, or assisting, or defending... but let Wilt and Jordan be on opposite teams. Hands down in the midst of all 10... Wilt. Just Wilt.

    last year the way i remember Wilt is a dominant center that played for the lakers. He was bad at free throws, couldn't shoot, and just dunked on people. I knew he was a great rebounder and defender and a guarenteed top 10 player. Throughout this year and the last I came across videos, blogs, and research that were cold, hard facts. This man is a 7'1 center, weighing as much as 310 pounds, as fast as a guard, great shooter, dunks from free throw line, 50 inch vertical in his prime, and sooo many more accomplishments. I truly believe he is the greatest basketball player to ever live. I think Jordan is way too hyped by the media and have these kids growing up just hearing jordan is the goat and they never question it. I was one of those kids. I wish I could have seen Wilt, Russell, Baylor, Oscar robertson, Kareem, and many more play in their prime.

Take into account his skillset and the post moves he had, you just gotta ask yourself, how in the world do you guard a guy like that? There are just so many ways he could score. He could catch lobs, he could grab rebounds and get easy putbacks, he could use his fadeaway and other post moves, or he could just play bully ball in the paint. He's like a mix of Shaq, AD, Gobert. To the people saying Wilt wont get as much points in todays game because of less possessions consider this. An NBA quarter is 12 min. A player only has to make 5 shots a quarter to get a MINIMUM of 40 points. Now lets look at Wilt's offensive repertoire. Dipper dunk, over shoulder finger role, fadeaway. At 7'1 about 280-310 with a 42+ inch vert and a 10.9 100 meter dash (college)...i think he can make 5 shots per quarter. Today's NBA would probably ban him for being an unfair advantage lol

    • @kwall55
      @kwall55 6 лет назад +2

      ...no I'm right by saying 5 shots per quarter since each shot is worth 2 points in the NBA. 20 shots=40 points. If he made 40 shots per game he would average 80 points per game. Not saying Wilt can't with what he brings to the table but 40 shots to one player is not a good game plan scheme wise.

It could be he decided the fade away took him out of position for rebounds, as it certainly did for Patrick Ewing later on. While I don't want to feed the myth that Wilt's opposing centers were markedly smaller than today's players, one could argue the forwards and guards swarming around Wilt in the 60s were significantly smaller than in his latter career, possibly making this shot more difficult to execute.

In addition, Wilt in his prime was a very mobile athlete so he could play any style which would still make him a great player in todays game. We're talking about the strongest player in the history of the game that could jump out of the gym, run like a deer, dominate the paint, and pretty much score at will unless triple teamed.

    In his career, he led the league in minutes played 8 times and he never fouled out of a game. He even had a season where he averaged over 48 minutes per game.

    I had the Fortune of watching Mr. Chamberlain play throughout his Lakers Career while I was a youngster.
    By then he was past his prime unbeknowingst to me but it didnt matter. To me he was Larger than Life and Always carried himself with a Genuine Personna. He Commanded Respect and got it.
    I remember an "Urban Legend"
    floating around during Jr High days about an encounter he had years earlier in the 1960s with a "Notorius" NFL Defensive Tackle named Eugene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb. Basically The "Mean Joe" Greene of the early 1960s but more Ornery off the field as well. The "Story" goes Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Lipscomb "bumped" into each other at one of those "Celebrity" Parties and Mr. Lipscomb staying True To Form said something about Basketball Players being "Soft".
    Wilt "The Stilt" promptly Lifted "Big Daddy"(Off The Ground) to Eye Level and Reminded Him that his Choice Of Words could be taken Personally. Something to the EFFect of: "Don't EFF with ME".
    Placed him down Gently Brushed Off His Shoulders and Resumed Partying. Sounds About Right to me considering Stories that were circulating about his Strength Coming from Teammates, Rivals, and people who knew him like Arnold Schwartzeneggar.
    Arnold (No Small Item Himself)
    Said Wilt basically Scared The ISH outta him in The Weight Room while working together on a "Conan" Movie.
    High Praise coming from a Premier Bodybuilder of his Day.
    I will never forget watching Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals
    (Growing up in NYC a Knicks Fan) watching Captain Willis Reed hobble onto the Court and score the first two Baskets to Inspire his Team to a Win against The Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West Led Los Angeles Lakers to Win The NBA Championship.

    I know a lot of you are disparaging Wilt's skill because he played against "6 foot centers". Wilt Chamberlain was 7'1" so against centers who were 6'10 or 6'9, the difference in height is only 3-4 inches. Remember anybody over 6'6" was either a center or a forward. Magic Johnson was the first player over 6'6" who played like a guard.
    You keep forgetting guys like Sam Bowie, Ralph Sampson also played in the NBA even for a short while. And having height doesn't necessarily translate into success; Gheorge Murasan and Manute Bol come to mind. Give credit where it's due; the most dominant player in the history of the NBA and arguable the Greatest of All Time-Wilton Norman Chamberlain.

    • @edbea2
      @edbea2 4 года назад

      Angelo Darden Wilt played against plenty of 7fters, including Kareem, and great players who were near 7ft in their bare feet like the great Walt Bellamy at over 6'-11", also greats like Nate Thurmond, Bob Lanier, same height as Bellamy...and all very big, strong, athletic hall of famers who would murder the league right now. And there's a lot more. Wilt dominated them all.

      The NBA's always had its own "tiered system" so if Shaq was being guarded by Rodman (especially playing alongside Jordan) they wouldn't let him get away with his pushing as when being guarded by Olajuwon, Robinson or Mutombo. Same with Chamberlain, he had to be extra careful not to be the bully in the eyes of the referee and since rules were more strict back then to prevent anyone dominating on pure physicallity, he had to shoot from distance and even when he reaches to do a finger roll he's being careful his movement doesn't hit the defender.

    For years I didn't understand - for years I didn't want to understand...He literally changed the free-throw rule, he altered the basket height, they forced him to play in college bc they were worried he would be too good (and the league was racist at that time): whatever he did he was amazing. I want people to understand this. 30pts, 24 rbs, 5 asts, 11 blckd shts. His first ten seasons Wilt had 12 blocks per game average - and yet they only counted the last 112 games of his carrer lol - He averaged a Triple Double in his career in 30pts,24rbs, 11blcks. He averaged a Triple Double For His Career. This is a man who lifted. 6' 1" Schwarzenneger with one arm...Think about that. He lifted 8x strongest man in the world up with one arm. 15.9ft w arms. He holds over 90 NBA records (Jordan doesn't have. a dbl dbl for his career) Undefeated finals teams r an illusion. Barkley took 20m for his family to tank game 6 against Bulls. Russell lost 2 finals.
    He benched 1k pounds. I wish they had. filmed more of his games, and that he had been on a bigger market team from the start.He was stronger than Schwarzennegar, and Russel says in this video he was better than him. Russel played on the greatest sports team of all time so that's a separate conversation. I'm sad he's gone and can't believe they didn't do a better job of filming all of his games. He beat Magic one on one in a best of twelve when Magic was team captain and then proceeded to not allow a shot for the rest of the game.
    Ur talking about a human being that can bench press 1k pounds. A high jump, long jump champion and shot put champion. Any sport he played he was amazing. -'course he had gone to a bigger market team they'd have praised him from beginning. Final thoughts:just bc ur shoes sell doesn't make u great. Idols let u down 100% bc they are manufactured Ideals. U want real Gods look to people who lead by ex. Look to athletes that lived as people (isn't it interesting how the league doesn't want a black star ... until they decide to change their mind...?)

    Tom Heinsohn said that Wilt was as good as he was at the fadeaway because it took away his strenght. He had so much of it that it was a hindrance to his accuracy. Tom thought that WIlt was too strong to shoot "normally", hence his terrible FT %. At the line, he had to shoot from too close for his power.

  • @mr.sinjin-smyth
    @mr.sinjin-smyth 8 лет назад +7

    For a bad FT shooter, Wilt possessed an amazing near accurate fadeaway / bank shot, simply unbelievable even by today's standards. Wilt's kind of underrated in some ways (even with 2 rings), because of the Finals losses he suffered against the 60's Celtics and 70's Knickerbockers. Individually he's almost unmatched, great scorer, superb rebounding, uncanny passing (only center in NBA history to lead league in assists), solid defender (Like Russell, lots of unrecorded block shots and steals), simply all around amazing athleticism. There's no doubt Wilt would dominate today's NBA even if he doesn't average 50 points and 25 rebounds. A 1961-62 Wilt Chamberlain would garner stats of 30-35 points, 15-20 rebounds, 4-5 assists, 2 steals, and 4 blocks in today's NBA.

      Wilt would've been a good free throw shooter if he just stuck with the same shot. He used the same fadeaway form his whole career (hs, college, nba) but his free throw form changed every season. his teams wanted him to try and get good at free throws ASAP instead of developing one form over a few years
