Have you guys ever seen a product made by Eastwood. Its a US based company and they sell a large handheld drum sander. Its based off an angle grinder but uses a 4 inch wide sanding drum that resembles the flap disk. Think of it as a flap drum. I really think that may be useful for your boat project. Eastwood makes products for paint removal, although its for automotive industry. I suggest taking a peak at it.

Looking at the hull, you have some small gaps between the boards. This is normally handled with cotton fiber caulked into the seams. (Then covered with pitch or other sealant.) That might help keep water out. Though from what I have seen, putting in 2 layers of cotton caulking correctly takes a lot of time. And it's more important below the water line, which for your current boat's location, is harder to work on.
    Anyway, good luck.

The big gaps should be filled with hemp and the smaller ones with SikaFlex, You will probably get away with using SikaFlex on all your gaps but if there is nothing there to seat the SikaFlex onto, then use some hemp to fill out the gap and then SikaFlex over the top before painting. This is a job for when you're out of the mud and on hard standing. Sand back to timber, hemp where needed and SikaFlex all the gaps. Then prime, top coat and antifoul. You'll get there some time soon.

Old paint is quite oily so a little heat soon softens it. No need to scotch the wood. Todays paints are much harder to shift especially primers.

Be wary of filling the gaps between the edges of planks. If they are overfilled the planks will cup and split when they swell due to moisture. If you feel they must be filled, use sikaflex or similar caulk that can squeeze out if needed.
Thin gaps can best be sealed with paint.

Didn't they test it, and got confirmed lead content? I really don't get why they use the angle grinder without proper ear glogs. In my workshop, I would have cut the wire, and not fixed it before proper gear was used... But hey! -it's not my tinnitus...
