Love that scrum from Tupis (Brazil) against the Maoris. Basically the only high point of the game for Brazil, but still worth watching over and over again. Thanks for including it, Andrew Also, that los Teros scrum was such a marvelous piece. It is clear that the Argentinian scrum influenced South America
The whole "Argentina are renowned for their scrummaging" thing is like this bit of 70s/80s commentary wisdom that has been handed down unquestioned through the decades. It hasn't really been true since the advent of the professional game.
Bruising stuff Andrew. Brazil? Twice?? Brilliant to see. And those clips of the Irish pack of yesteryear reminds me to remind you about a Jamie Heaslip tribute/ compilation please.
I hate to be that guy but the scrum at 8:50 was super illegal. They were not driving straight. The tighthead is clearly walking almost sideways to get the shove.
Rugby is a very hórny sport; loose head, tight head, hooker, flanker, scrum (or as I use to call it 'scrótum'), and for some reason, there is a guy called 'Number 8' on the field.
England’s pack got battered in that final, but when England won that penalty so emphatically me and every Englishman in the pub leapt to our feet and roared in the way only a prideful patriot can.
Over this last ten years, the Georgian scrum has been easily the most impressive scrum in world rugby. They’ve obliterated every country they’ve come against, I’ve yet to see them lose a single scrum!
Because the scrum is a contest, so both teams can win it by pushing the opponents back or by making them do a faul (intentional collapsing and knees touching the ground for example), with the prize being the penalty. They can also choose to save that penalty for later, just like the advantage rule in football, and keep pushing.
The short answer is time. Crouch-touch-pause-engage didn't last long because it slowed the whole game horribly. If I remember right, it was replaced with crouch-bind-set after one season.

Brazil are strange because all the other South American teams have the same south American flair through their backs like Uruguay and Chile but Brazil are the complete opposite
Very irresponsible crowds here. How many died 2 weeks after this? I know it's a few years ago but we must never go back to this. To get to ZEROCOVID and remain there we must stay at home, wear at least 2 masks and follow the rules. It's up to all of us to keep everyone safe. Stay safe!
I better forget about this video when No Nut November comes around.

SA made the scrum a highlight in rugby again in that world cup
Where did you get the two scrums over the past 15 years where the Boks actually went backwards ? 😅
Would have thought that a Tongan and Georgian pack colliding would cause a black hole to appear.
The whole "Argentina are renowned for their scrummaging" thing is like this bit of 70s/80s commentary wisdom that has been handed down unquestioned through the decades. It hasn't really been true since the advent of the professional game.
That 2019 final had some of the best scrums I've seen in the modern game
Tom Court getting mangled at tighthead against England was the most painful rugby match I’ve ever watched. Truly depressing.
I Love The Title Mate.

They suffered against the boks in 2021, but rehardless they are very impressive. Especially for a tier 2 nation punching so far up.
The best forward pack will always be springboks no matter what

Would love to see Sheridan vs Australia in a pt2. I think it was a 2008 series?

That brazil scrum is insane
Just 2 scrums from the 2019 RWC final?
Shut up
Nice that was entertainment well done !!
Irish commentators are so biased it’s hilarious
if they scrum like that, its time to start looking out for Brazilian rugby. Go Os Tupis!
Since when were Brazil monster scrummagers?!?!
Last two seasons Vinapola and co have buried us
Don’t like all that crouch touch set shit feels like there non contested as much as they used to be
Aren't they being a bit pushy?
Ayo that title ?

Can someone explain why penalties get given during scrums? I'm pretty new to rugby and can't figure out why the penalties are given
Because the scrum is a contest, so both teams can win it by pushing the opponents back or by making them do a faul (intentional collapsing and knees touching the ground for example), with the prize being the penalty.
They can also choose to save that penalty for later, just like the advantage rule in football, and keep pushing.
what a quality title hahaha
Springboks strongest and best scrum like it or not!!monsters of power!!!
Think England need to watch this
Question: what determines whether the referee says "crouch-bind-set" or "crouch-touch-pause-engage"?
The short answer is time. Crouch-touch-pause-engage didn't last long because it slowed the whole game horribly. If I remember right, it was replaced with crouch-bind-set after one season.
2013 the law changed to crouch-bind-set
@@leithscrumhalf4143 The scrums use to be even slower than they are now? Is that even possible?
You are the best
First scrum
1) Ireland takes a step to the left to change the angle of drive
2) Ireland tighthead angling on AB hooker that is why Tuinukuafe came up
3) Irish scrum driving from left to straight then drove to the left
Should have been a AB scrum penalty
Second scrum
1) drive came from left side of Bok scrum
2) forced Bok loosehead on angle against English tight head
Should have been a English penalty
Third scrum - fair call
Forth scrum
1) green loosehead won the hit on the tighthead forcing an angle on TH
Should be a penalty against Green (Northhampton) Loosehead but TH lost the hit!
Fifth scrum
1) Georgia scrum power scrummed before the ball was put in
2) rule says you cannot power on till ball is IN the scrum
Penalty to Fiji
6th scrum
1) on engagement Irish TH clearly goes in on hooker
2) BUT Irish TH over does the angle and exposes himself
Penalty to England for boring in by Irish TH but he overdoes it and puts himself in a vunerable position however penalty to England because Irish 7 came off and tackled England 8 when ball still in scrum
7th scrum - fair call
8th Scrum
1) looks like Georgian LH angles in on Tongan TH - can't quite see because of ref
2) BUT the result clearly shows Tongan TH folded and popped inwards - that is angling
Penalty to Tonga
9th Scrum
1) clearly Italy TH on the angle
2) at the same time Italian scrum driving to the left
Penalty to Russia
10th scrum - looks like a fair call
11th scrum
1) Looks like Northhampton LH and hooker going in on opposition TH
2) That is why you almost see the Northhampton front row facing right side sideline
Penalty AGAINST Northhampton
12th scrum
1) French TH and hooker going in and boring NZ hooker
2) This allows the French LH to force NZ TH inwards
Penalty to NZ
13th scrum - fair call
1) that is because the US scrum took 2 small steps to the left
2) created an angle for US TH BUT the angle gave the Uruguay the stronger position - tactic backfired!
14th scrum - fair call
1) Bok 2nd row set to drive to their right
2) the angle drive forces and puts Bok LH in exposed position
15th scrum - fair call
1) Hawkes Bay TH lost the hit to Manawatu LH
16th scrum - fair call
1) Leicester tried a small power step before the ball was in
2) Leicester took a step to the left to change the angle
3) Bath scrum stayed straight and tried to drive straight even though Leicester tried to drag them around that is why Leicester scrum got nailed
17th scrum - fair call
1) Japanese team should have been penalised for power drive on engagement
2) Japanese TH angling got exposed into weak position enabling Georgian LH and hooker to go on Japanese TH
18th scrum
1) Osprey scrum took a power step on engagement
2) Dragon scrum under stress by the time the ball was in
Penalty to Dragons
19th scrum - fair call
20th scrum
1) Northhampton were already powering on before the ball was in
2) Northhampton took a power step on the engagement
3) Northhampton then extended before the ball was in
4) Gloucester scrum under massive stress before ball was in
Penalty to Gloucester
21st scrum - fair call
22nd scrum
1) Wales drove in on engagement
2) Wales kept driving before and when the ball was put in
Penalty to France
23rd scrum
1) Red TH drove that scrum straight up
Penalty to blue!
24th scrum
1) could not quite see because ref in the way
2) LOOKS like English LH may have angled in on Irish TH
MAYBE penalty to Ireland
25th Scrum
1) those blokes have gone mad
Penalty to the pub establishment!
26th scrum
1) Blue hooker and Blue LH going in on White TH
2) Blue TH going in on White hooker
penalty to White
27th scrum - cannot call it
1) hard to say because the clip did not show before engagement but looks like white scrum took a power step engagement
2) Also there is an indication that there was an angle or scrum screwed around due to the front rows facing the sidelines
Will look at the last 6 scrums later!
If Germany or Sweden ever takes up rugby, we’re all screwed. Except SA, of course.
Brazil?!
Can someone please explain to me what they're trying to do?
Oh I get it just drive the other team down the field for bette field position when they play the ball
Remember when scrums didn’t waste 5+ minutes of game time and were actually a fair contest instead of a penalty generator?
Me neither
