      @Jeffrey Schwartz Ha - very witty. It's amazing when you get a reply to something you can't remember writing. The 'bored' error must have been corrected (maybe originally written as board?) as my comment no longer makes sense and I'm going to delete it.

    That last burst of sound was - in the days of vinyl - an endless groove. The record needle would fall back into the groove over and over until you picked it up manually. They always loved a good prank.

      The U.S. version of Sgt. Pepper didn't have the dog whistle and gibberish on the inner groove. It wouldn't be until the 1980 album The Beatles Rarites that people would hear what is referred to as "Sgt. Pepper Inner Groove". When The Beatles CD's came out in 1987, the inner groove was included at the end of the Sgt. Pepper CD.

    As some of you will know, the inspiration for the first two verses of this song was the death of Tara Browne, the 21-year-old heir to the Guinness fortune who had crashed his car on 18 December 1966. Browne was a friend of Lennon and McCartney, and had instigated McCartney's first experience with LSD.

    All of Johns parts were inspired by actual articles that he had read about in the newspaper. "4000 holes in Blackburn Lankenshier" was a story about 'pot holes'!
    The final chord is noteworthy because a piano with full pedal can hold a note out to around 30 seconds. This chord is held for over 40 seconds because of how they did it! Two pianos', a hammond B-3 organ, 6 players (all 4 Beatles + George Martin and one other dude) microphone was placed inside the sound box of the Pianos, at least two people on each piano pounding together in octaves simultaneously and a REALLY good sound engineer with a gentle touch on the volume controls. Had never been done before!

Radio and television giving us stories of tragedy followed by a commercial of a happy smiling family enjoying frozen dinners. The Sgt Pepper album cover has a story of its own. Each of those people there are famous, well known celebrities etc. The Beatles and the producers were worried that some of them might sue for using their image as none were asked formal permission to use their image. In fact, there had been a picture of Gandhi in there too, but at the last moment it was decided to remove his because of fearing some kind of protest or uprising in India. But they left all the other pictures in place, released the album and afterward not one of them sued! In fact, most said they were honored to be a part of the album. ✌️😎

    The final chord from "A Day In the Life" became famous itself over time. Crazy to think that record is as old as I am. Two other cuts from that album to check out are "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "With a Little Help from My Friends" -- a song covered many times by other musicians to great effect, quite famously by Joe Cocker at Woodstock. That strange bit of laughter at the end contains a dog whistle tone -- 15kHz -- so it might make any dogs within ear shot bark. It was placed on the record in what is called the "run-out groove" or the "lead-out groove" -- it would guide the record player to stop playing the phonograph or in this case it would loop as a reminder to get up and turn the record over and play the album again from the beginning.

    Since you asked how it was in the sixties, I can tell you one thing, we didn't have Wikipedia articles to consult and find out exactly what the songs' lyrics referred to, or The Beatles' explanations as to the origins of the songs, production details, etc. We had to wait. We didn't know about the poster that inspired John's 'Mr. Kite' song, or the newspaper stories about the pot holes around the Albert Hall, the aristocrat's fatal car wreck, we didn't know that Sexy Sadie was about the Maharishi, or that She Said was about Peter Fonda, or that Jude meant Julian, etc. ! British Beatlemaniacs had a better understanding of those references than us kids in America did, a WHOLE LOT of references were missed, but fortunately it didn't matter any more than people not knowing Paul's mother's name was Mary when they hear Let It Be and presume Paul meant THE Mary (mother of god). Also, due to the exploitative writing about them, there was a lot of misinformation, so to speak, the paperback biographies and fan magazines, and the film A Hard Day's Night', weren't much to rely on, and much has been debunked by later research.

    Another great Beatles video react, Cimdy! I especially like your attention to the long ending chord.
    Aside from the other great aspects of this classic Beatles song ... Ringo's drumming once again is spot on. The tone of the song is subtle, telling a stream of consciousness and not much build-up until the ending. Ringo provides just the right measure of thump and cymbal and roll to provide progression and structure!
    I understand that the union musicians brought in to play the strings, etc., were annoyed that they didn't have proper sheet music for their parts. George Martin had a time trying to convince them to just play progressively higher and higher scales until they reached an agreed-upon stopping point ...

    John wrote the main body of lyrics, taking inspiration from newspaper articles. Paul wrote the middle eight, which was a completely different song. They melded the two songs together perfectly. Actually, this was banned from the radio because of the lyric I'd Love to turn you on...which was considered a drug reference. This is considered the absolute best Rock song ever written in the 20th century. I can't say I disagree.

    Hi Cimdy, there was a story about this, let me share you. Lennon wrote the main part of the song. He was inspired by newspaper articles and his own experiences. In the first stanza, he refers to a millionaire and aristocrat son Tara Browne who was killed in a car accident on December 18, 1966, and who was friends with the Beatles and other British bands. In the second stanza, Lennon shows himself as a listless viewer who watches the British Army win the war. In the third stanza, he takes up an article of January 17, 1967, in the Daily Mail about potholes in Blackburn, Lancashire. I don't know if anyone out there heard about this. Great share anyway.👍

    This is the Beatles producer George Martin's masterpiece. He was perfect for the Beatles.

      @backbeat44 3 года назад

      This was The Beatles masterpiece that Martin produced

    • @ozman9353
      @ozman9353 3 года назад

      @@backbeat44 It was George Martin that turned a basic song into a classic when in the studio he created the orchestra and the change with piano where Paul sings and then the final explosive end. It was very much Martin's masterpiece. He turned other Beatles songs into classics also. He is a genius.

    • @backbeat44
      @backbeat44 3 года назад

      @@ozman9353 Wrong: George Martin said in his 1979 book All You Need is Ears that the glissando was Lennon's idea. After Lennon's death, Martin seems to have changed his mind. In his 1995 book Summer of Love: The Making of Sgt. Pepper, he states that the rising orchestra-glissando was McCartney's idea.
      George Martin (from Q Magazine, July 2007): "John's voice - which he hated - was the kind of thing that would send shivers down your spine. If you hear those opening chords with the guitar and piano, and then his voice comes in, 'I heard the news today, oh boy' It's just so evocative of that time. He always played his songs to me on the guitar and I would sit on a stool as he strummed. The orchestral section was Paul's idea. We put two pieces of songs together that weren't connected in any way. Then we had that 24-bars-of-nothing in between.
      McCartney, "And then we put on another section I had: 'Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head.' Then we finished the song up and did a big sort of epic recording of it with a big full orchestra and everything. And then did that crescendo thing in the middle of it with the orchestra, which was an idea I'd had because I'd been talking to people and reading about avant-garde music, tonal stuff and crazy ideas. I came up with this idea. I said to the orchestra, 'You should start, all of you.' And they sat all looking at me puzzled. We've got a real symphony orchestra in London who are used to playing Beethoven, and here's me, this crazy guy out of a group and I'm saying, 'Everyone start on the lowest note your instrument can play and work your way up to the highest at your own pace.' That was too puzzling for them, and orchestras don't like that kind of thing. They like it written down and they like to know exactly what they're supposed to do. So George Martin, the producer, said to the people, 'You should leave this note and this point in the song, and then you should go to this note and this note,' and he left the random thing, so that's why it sounds like a chaotic sort of swirl. That was an idea based on the avant-garde stuff I was into at the time."
      A 41-piece orchestra played on this song. The musicians were told to attend the session dressed formally. When they got there, they were presented with party novelties (false noses, party hats, gorilla-paw glove) to wear, which made it clear this was not going to be a typical session. The orchestra was conducted by Paul McCartney, who told them to start with the lowest note of their instruments and gradually play to the highest.

    • @pestbsn
      @pestbsn 2 года назад

      @@backbeat44 in a televised interview with George Martin, he also stated it was Paul's idea. He wanted everyone to start at their lowest note and end in a crescendo. But the orchestra didn't understand so George had to write out the sheet music for them to play

    • @strathman7501
      @strathman7501 Год назад

      Just to get this straight: Lennon and McCartney devised the basic arrangement on their own, including the idea of a crazy crescendo between the parts. You can hear this already on Take One where they left a placeholder section of dissonant piano and other sounds, rising to a climax, to be filled out later. John said: "We'd rehearsed it at home the previous afternoon, which we didn't often do, so we knew exactly what we were playing." What then evolved in the studio was the method of implementing the crescendo idea. John told George Martin that they wanted a sound like the end of the world but couldn't express it more clearly. Paul, typically, was a bit more practical and suggested they use an orchestra. His idea was that they'd have each instrument playing freely from its lowest note to its highest. John signed off on this, so Martin then wrote out rough "scores" to help convey the idea to the bemused musicians, and he and Paul "conducted" them. Multiple recordings were combined to produce the effect of an even larger orchestra. According to engineer Geoff Emerick, George Martin initially "rolled his eyes" when this was suggested and had to be persuaded.

    You know I can't remember the exact number but I think they brought in like 20 grand pianos so that they can play the last cord in a day in a life you know when they played at Albert Hall it's actually called Royal Albert Hall somehow the publicist forgot to run advertisements so they didn't sell out all the seats which is ironic because it should have been packed but the publicist screwed up and when he says two thousand holes in Lancashire and then he says now we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall now you have to realize this record was pretty much only released on vinyl as a record of 12 in 33 and a third record I think the only other format at the time would have been a real to reel tape so anyhow the way I record plays there's an inner Groove that the needle will just go back and forth on after the record is done playing so after the song was over you noticed that strange sound at the end well on the English version of the record they put this inner Groove and it would just keep playing over and over has it went back and forth on that inner Groove unless it had an automatic pick up tonearm it actually sounds like what it is I think it's it's a conversation at a party and they're saying somebody is saying I just could not see it any other way and of course at the story hear somebody laughing and then at the very end of what the person made his statement you hear somebody start laughing again but also I think what they did is they took some cellos or violin and they followed along with the conversation and play the notes of the person's voice to go along with the voice because the pitch goes up and goes back down and the violin place the voice perfectly but yeah that's the inner Groove of the record so I know it probably seems out of context or seems like it doesn't make any sense but that's what happened also there's another funny thing because that they put a dog whistle somewhere on the album and when they've got their first acetate before it was released the Beatles would go to people's parties and play the acetate and they would sit there and watch the the dog that was in the house and watch its ears perk up I guess they had a lot of fun doing that because it's a sound that our ears couldn't hear but the dogs can hear it at 20000 Hertz all right my girl that was so absolute awesome reaction

    Hey there Cimdy. Oh man, I thought that you were going to end this song too early... but you didn't disappoint! I should have known better. (Hey, that reminds me of a Beatles song?!) Did you know that the Beatles and this Song were entered into the "Guinness Book of World Records" for the longest sustained musical note ever recorded in a song? Yup, it's true. Thank You again, fot all you do. Keep Smiling...

    John Lennon and Paul McCartney put two songs together and made it one song. John wrote the first part and the third part and Paul McCartney put the bouncy middle part in the song. He was also the singer in the middle part and John Sang the rest of the song.

    Yes you're right The Beatles changed everything. The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Kinks are my all time favorite bands. You should try to react to the We Love You by The Rolling Stones where you'll hear John and Paul doiing some backing vocals Amazing track. The Kinks Waterloo Sunset and The Who Who are You or any of their earlier stuff (My Generation will be a good start). Is Paul your favorite Beatles?

    Mainly a John song with Paul adding the middle part. This is basically about a day in John's life. He was reading the newspaper one day and two little stories caught his eye. The man who blew his mind out in a car was about a wealthy young heiress who died in a car wreck. Many people think it's about blowing his mind out on drugs, but it's not. The 4,000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire is about a road crew who had to go out and count potholes in the roads and in one road they counted 4,000 that needed filled. The Beatles were taking LSD (acid) at this time. When John sings "I'd love to turn you on" meant they wanted to turn you on to acid. When Paul sings "found my way upstairs and had a smoke and somebody spoke and I went into a dream" the smoke was a marijuana reference. This song was banned by the BBC in England from radio airplay because of the drug references.This was 1967, that was crazy stuff back then. This album, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is regarded as the greatest album in history and this song from this album is considered the greatest album track in history. Check out Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds from this album, it's another Lennon LSD inspired track, a great song. Take care and have a wonderful day.

      Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I have to push back on the statement that this album is regarded as the greatest in history. Some do say that but there are many other opinions as to what is the greatest Beatles album, much less greatest album. As to your comment about Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Lennon consistently denied the drug reference. He claimed the song was based on a picture his son, Julian, drew. John was shown the picture and asked, "What's this?" Julian replied, "Lucy in the sky with diamonds." Many of Lennon's songs from this time were influenced by his reading of Alice in Wonderland books. "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" on the same album very much has a "Through the Looking Glass" feel. That song came from a poster Lennon saw, just like "Lucy" came from a picture.

      @@JamesLachowsky Thanks for your comment James. Personally, I feel that Revolver is the greatest Lp of all time. Now put Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on Pepper as they were supposed to be and we're talking greatest of all time. With Lucy I am well aware of Julian's drawing and Alice In Wonderland inspiration's. Lennon himself said that although the song was not about any particular acid experience but the imagery was. Kinda like Alice through the eyes of of a young man now all grown up. Makes sense in that context, doesn't it? I was just keeping it basic for the young lady without going into some long story. I was long enough on A Day In The Life.

      @@JamesLachowsky Seem to me you are pretty well versed in Beatles history which I enjoy James. Getting back to the single I will assume that you know that Strawberry Fields/ Penny Lane were the first two songs recorded for Pepper before it was Pepper. All they knew was that these two were the first songs for their next Lp. The executives at EMI took care of ruining that out of simple greed. They pressured Epstein and Martin for a single because the band hadn't released one in a whole six months. George Martin relented and put them out as a single. He said in later years that it was the only regret he ever had recording The Beatles. I find a little solace though that it is regarded as the greatest single in history and who's gonna argue with that?

      @@JamesLachowsky Yeah, Mr Kite is a great song and inspired by a circus poster dated 1843. All of the characters he nicked almost word for word. Their is a photo of him proudly holding the poster. You stated greatest LP Beatles let alone greatest Lp ever. What would you put above Pepper or Revolver and with The Beatles it comes down to those two because those are the two that are debated, not The White Album or Abbey Road although Rubber Soul is all time great also. Who would you think had greatest Lp over this band. Maybe Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon, no way. A Zeppelin or Stones Lp? No way. I'm done, nice chatting with you James. Comment back if you would like to. Take care

      I always thought that "went up stairs and had a smoke" was a reference to DMT, as it's a very powerful short-lived "other worldly" experience that would/could produce, among other things, the two crescendo one hears in this song, while smoking a joint wouldn't do so much by comparison.

    I am that geek who put all The Beatles' songs in order of my favorites, and this song is #1 for me (followed closely by "Eleanor Rigby"). Judging from the art in your room, I assumed you would appreciate this amazing song as well. It's worth listening to over and over again...each time hearing something new. And now for something completely different - I suggest you listen to "Help".
