  • Where are you going to put your hives? Do you need sunlight or shade? What about access? Water?

Good Info Bill, I love your dog... I have found its not good to place hives under a tree, Branches will fall on the hive, You can set a hive around the shade it cast off, but do not set them under a tree and no where around a dead tree, and too, trees draws lighting. The Experts claim to set hives out in the full sun, and the color of the hive should be white, mine are yellow. but its to hot in Texas and wax and honey will start melting and running, if i have a tree i do set them in the shade of the hottest part of the day..here it noon to 5pm.its the hottest time . Air flow is very importance! A hive should get a lot of air to it. That what i learned the hard way If it don't stop raining here i'am going to raise fish he heee Cheers

good tips! great topic! while you did mention a southern face, i think it's important to have a southern face with morning sun to get the girls going as early a possible. also i've heard the old timers say small hive is worse with hives in a shady location? i have one hive on the southern side of my brother's house and down here in New Orleans the temp in mid to late summer is is very hot so i put some 75% shade cloth directly above to reduce the midday heat.

Charles Ginzel Yes, in hot areas like the south shade is definitely more important. Shade cloth is a great idea. Thanks for the comment! :)

Hello, Are you putting the hive on the city utility easement? Under the pole I see in the video by the fence. (power, cable, phone?) Is that a good idea? I can see some problems having it there. Maybe even a lawsuit if a worker is to get stung. Just wondering.

Mark Thompson Good question, and I was concerned about that too. The property owner said that when the city has worked on the pole they always access it from the other side of the fence. If a worker is up on the pole, I don't think the bees would care.

I've seen some recommendations that you place the hives near an obstruction (say, a 6' fence in this vid) so the bees have to gain altitude to get out. This is supposed to keep bee/neighbor collisions down. Is this an issue?

Zerkbern It can be. Some cities even require a "fly-away barrier" if the hives are within a certain distance from the property line. This can be anything from a fence to shrubs. When placing the hives near such a barrier make sure you have at least 3 feet of free space around the back of the hives for you to work.
