Oh my gawd!!! I'm in Texas freezing through the power outage for 4 days---39F inside the house. I never want to be that cold for so long ever again. Portugal or bust 2021!
I would love to meet you this year!
Sorry to hear about the bad weather and the outage; hopefully it will be back to normal sooner than later. Portugal is waiting for you; we'll be here! Take care EGrace.
I’m a fellow Canadian born in the Azores as well. My mom and Dad retired back to Sao Miguel in 2001 after living in Canada for 30 plus years. With every passing year since they’ve moved back I feel more drawn to return to my roots and experience the slower pace and the beautiful landscape the islands have to offer. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Looking forward to more videos.
It is so beautiful here Anah! Laura
I do have insurance coverage being a Portuguese citizen. I just wanted to have extra coverage. Take care Anah!
Same here

They are amazing animals; healthy to be around them. Cheers!
You are such a refreshing, sweet couple. Really enjoyed watching your video. We have a lot in common because we are planning on going back to Portugal as well to live a simpler, heathy life. I was 18 when I left and it took me being away for 30 years to realize how much I love my country, its people and its food. Thank you for making these videos - you inspire me and my wife!
Appreciate your kind words; we're glad you are enjoying the journey. Portugal is an amazing country; time to return. Saude e paz!

Hi Carlos and Laura. I am from Ireland and currently live in Hawai'i. My partner and I (from Japan) are moving, permanently, to Sao Miguel in June. Thank you guys so much for the very valuable insights. Every time I watch one of your videos, I feel a burst of anticipation - if all goes as planned, I should be arriving in Terceira in 164 days (but who's counting??). The feeling is even stronger when I hear stories such as the one you shared about your friend's passing. Life is indeed way too short.
On another note, when putting together your "cost of groceries" video, don't forget to factor in the adult refreshments. Very important! 😉
The count down has begun for you; awesome! Glad you enjoyed our videos. Adult refreshments; for sure! Take care!
Have a safe stay
I've read some of the other comments and I have to say Laura and Carlos and all the viewers who said they were moving to or visiting , i envy you all so much and really hope that I will be able to do that one day as well 😊 ❤

The world gets so much smaller as we get older. We were having lunch in Lagos and someone over heard us speaking English, they asked where we were from. We said Ontario, but originally from BC. They were from BC. We chatted a while. It turned out the girl took ice dance lessons from my daughter's ice dance coach, and the boy went to the same highschool as my daughter. Ciao,
If you were citizens of Portugal would you need the insurance you’ve purchased? Okay I just heard you say you are a Portuguese citizen. You are covered privately and through the State. Good for you!

Hi guys! Lovely channel. Regarding private medical insurance, I have a question for which I cannot find the answer. If you have a pre-existing condition, say something run of the mill like high blood pressure or diabetes, it seems to me that most private insurances will not cover that. Is that so? If they do not, does that mean they deny you coverage period, or you can still get insured but the pre-existing condition treatment is excluded? It would be very useful to know.
We still have a few years to go and we're getting older...I'd hate for a pre-existing condition to arise that would ruin our moving plans.
Glad you are enjoying the channel, appreciate it. The only I can pass on re: your question on pre-existing is that I take some medication for blood pressure. This is why I had to answer a written questionnaire and have a phone interview. I was approved, I guess it will depend on how serious the pre-existing situation is. I would go to Santander website, click on the insurance area and either email or call to ask, this way you are clear. I found them to be very helpful! Take care!
I've been to Canada multiple time skiing and Iove it there too, but only for a week or so.
Thank you for answering my question. You answer confirms very useful information I received from someone whose husband is an insurance broker in Lisbon. As it turns out, most insurance companies will not cover pre-existing conditions, but they won't deny coverage and will still cover for everything else. The public system can then be used to treat the pre-existing because it doesn't exclude those.
Thankfully my case is rather simple and may not even count as pre-existing...and if it does it isn't a big deal at all.
Thanks again Carlos & Laura!

Is it just Canada you can't get back? A friend of mine is buying property on Graciosa. I plan to go with him this summer but I can't afford to get stranded in the Azores
It's mostly to do with Canadian covid restrictions. In normal times; you can fly at least 5 times a week in the summer. Cheers
It's a beautiful set of islands. I visited 25 years ago. I'm am looking forward to getting back there. I am enjoying your videos but don't let the secret too far out of the bag... Or the Azores will be the next Iceland, Croatia or Czech republic
Hi Carlos & Laura, Why did you go with Santander versus a Bank in Canada for your mortgage?
Good question. I was wondering the same. Wouldn’t it make more sense to get let’s say a line of credit in canada and then invest in the home in Azores. I don’t know. Maybe there are technical reasons for it and that would be interesting to know.
@@mannygasparinho Im building soon in Santo Amaro, Pico and have both a Santander and Canadian Bank account so i'll be evaluating both. I haven't looked into it yet but my only guess is that the interest rates could very well be much lower in the Azores...Although, they are crazy low in Canada also.
Great question! Because we will be spending more time here, starting a business etc. We felt it was important to start establishing a relationship with the bank. We also got an amazing mortgage; not to mention the bank manager is the best we have ever worked with. Take care Brian!

I believe you loose OHIP coverage (i know you can be covered again once you return but there will be a waiting period, I believe?) if you are out of the country for 6 months. Is the Ontario government making special provisions for people like you who cannot return through no fault of your own?
I believe you are correct Ana. I think the magic number is 183; you must spend 183 days in a calendar in Canada. It does not have to be consecutive. Thanks for sharing. Take care!
What are house/apartment rental costs like there? Thanks!
It would depend when, where and how on. Your question is a bit general; but I will try and give you an idea. Winter; you can rent a basic place for staring around 300 euros per month. Tourism months Jun to September most of the rentals are for tourists; rates start at an average of 125 euros per night for a half decent place. If you want a bit more luxury; it will be over 200 euros. You can also rent rooms starting in the summer at around 75 euros; 25 in the winter. Take care!
@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 Thanks. I should have been more specific. I was thinking about a suburb in Lisbon. I don't know what areas you are the most familiar with? What is the best way to find a long-term rental? Are they a year at a time? What deposits are expected?
For a nice place In the best areas of Lisbon you are looking at over 1500 euros per month. Best for you to go into one of the websites; we like one called idealista. Cheers
Hi guy's, you said that you've been in Pico for over 6 months I was under the impression that you had to live in Canada at least 6 months of the year to keep your health care, is that wrong?
That is correct. If you are out of Canada longer; than you reapply. I believe because of covid19 they are making some exceptions. Sorry for the delayed response. Take care!
Is the insurance payment monthly? Yearly? How much coverage did u get?
Hi Marta! Payments are monthly. For the complete coverage; go to the website as mentioned on the video. We chose option 2; it has 50000 hospitalization etc. Get it all on the site. Cheers!
Thank you.
How does long-term care work in Portugal? Is it part of the public health system or a separate expense?
It's separate! Only citizens get the regular public health care. Cheers
@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 okay. If an expats becomes a resident is it still separate? Is there an age limit to obtain the separate policy?
@@jannellmcbride1922 A resident may only want the public care. Some want extra coverage so they pay for private;. This way they have both; like me. Private goes to at least 75; most likely higher... Don't remember. Go to the link in the video under description. Cheers
