Bochum fans boycott away games at Red Bull Leipzig, thats why there weren't many of them. Some other clubs fanbases do it too. For example, Freiburg fans go to their U23 teams game instead of going to RB away.
That makes sense!!
@@awaydaysfootballhello sir es Leeds spending another 16 years in championship
@@awaydaysfootball Almost every organised fan scene in the bundesliga boycotts their games
@awaydaysfootball yeah that's true. Also, Bochum fans are class if you ever are in NRW. Their away support is usually quite good as well. RB with the worst atmosphere in both ends 😂
I just don't understand how you can hate a club because of tradition in this day and age. We live in capitalism, it's the 21st century. RB Leipzig is only working for the good of German football: the Bundesliga is becoming much more competitive and entertaining. Do you want Bayern to win the league easily every year? Is that really what you want? The German public may have had enough of that, but the DFL does not just show football for the German public!
There were no Bochum fans because the active Fans protest against RBL and thatways do not go to RB
Makes sense!
@@awaydaysfootball I went Leipzig last year. Enjoyable city. I see a lokomotive game. They are traditionally the biggest club in Leipzig. There is also another club called Chemie Leipzig. They contest the Leipzig derby with lokomotive
@@callumkent7155 Chemie vs Lok is one of the biggest derbys in germany, Top 10 if not even Top 5. The Derby is not only local, it is also political because Lok is political right and Chmie is political left.

You're not gonna believe it but the "Ultras" of RB are actually protesting against Red Bull having to much of an influence in the club. Towards the end of last season some of the "Ultras" got banned for using pyro and now they're beefing with the only reason they're somewhat relevant
👀👀
hilarious amounts of doublethink there
@@blaubeer8039It's sooo funny 😂
"Ultras" Cant take anyone who supports RB Leipzig serious.
Red Bull dont have Ultras. Only Clowns.
Lokomotive und Chemie Leipzig still control the city. Look at the streetart. They have big fanbases and both average attendances around 5000 in the 4th division. A lot of people going to RB Leipzig used to follow those teams in the past but dogded them for not being succesfull enough, probably even before RB Leipzig was founded. They don't care about the club, they just want to watch succesful football. Fair enough, but thats not what german football culture is about. If Red Bull decides not to sponsor this club anymore it will vanish.
For Chemie that might be true...
But for Lok there are a bunch of really good other reasons to stop supporting, my man.
Some people just don't like standing shoulder to shoulder with Nazi-imbeciles themselves, or their symphatisants, within the block.

It’s quite interesting that, historically, East German football clubs in the former GDR were always linked to a certain company. The other two traditional clubs of Leipzig are called Lokomotiv and Chemie. Lokomotiv belonged to the railway company while Chemie belonged to the local chemical industry, just like Chemie Halle (now Hallescher FC). Dynamo Dresden belonged to the police department while Dynamo Berlin belonged to the Ministry of State Security. The main economic activity in Cottbus was its energy plant, hence the football club Energie Cottbus. Erzgebirge Aue used to be called Pneumatik Aue and later Wismut Aue and was owned by the local construction tool company, with Hansa Rostock being owned by the local fishing industry and FSV Zwickau, then called Motor Zwickau, being owned by the local car and engine manufacturing company.
Great summary 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Not comparable because these clubs are not an ad. They are more comparable to Leverkusen probably
As far as i know they weren't owned by the companies. Those we're more Like assigned sponsors
For clarification because some of these replies seem to miss this: the GDR was a planned economy meaning all those "companies" were publicly owned enterprises not meant to generate private revenue for themselves at all. So the concepts of the Clubs "advertising" or "being sponsored" etc don't make any sense really (there was No capitalism incentive for that sort of thing, it's all publicly owned anyway), the sports teams were organized this way for logistical reasons (to have players be paid as workers of said enterprise as pro athlethism wasn't officially a thing).
It's basically the complete opposite as RB (a private company within capitalism out there to generate $$$) owning a Club for advertising
I'd love to see more Away Days at stadiums in the former GDR. Ellis at a Jena-Erfurt derby, anyone?
@awaydays Bochum didnt sell out their away end because most german Fans boycott the Away game in Leipzig. thats why there is barely anyone in the away end
Love the new format of actually checking out the cities or towns of the places you're visiting. Gives the skint and tied down people amongst us a chance to experience new places!
Wouldn’t RB Salzburg be more hated considering they stole one of the biggest Austrian clubs to make the new club
That's what I understand
They are both hated
Salzburg took over austria salzburg. They would have gone bankrupt if they werent taken over by rb. But yeah they are unfortunetly hated in austria
I am from Austria and was a big fan of Austria Salzburg in the 90s. But then die club declined and nearly went bankrupt. Without Red Bull there would be no professional football team in Salzburg i think. And the investment of Red Bull liftet the Austrian football to a much higher level.
Salzburg is for austrians what leipzig is to eastern germans. RB elevated the level of football there and therefore the ppl dont care that much about the construct behind it.
17:18 No way you used the RB Salzburg hockey club's crest 😂
Lol😂
Says it all about this fucking RedBull sports empire lol
15:43 “It’s a young history” No it’s no history with a position in the league bought and paid for by Red Bull. The club that they erased had history, not this energy drink advertisement.
Also in regard to the Bochum fans, lots of clubs boycott their games at Leipzig because of their existence and how they’re run. Which is why their away allocation isn’t sold out.
They didn’t erase any history though. SSV Markranstädt still exist, with all of their history in tact.

I was at Gladbach the night before this Leipzig match. It was the opener versus Bayer. It was indeed an incredible experience. The atmosphere was truly stunning.

"Tradition starts somewhere" - yeah lad. You're in Leipzig. The place the DFB was founded. You have Lok Leipzig who played in a European final. Chemie won two league titles in East Germany. You've got tradition on your doorstep
Unreal
@awaydaysfootball football in the former East Germany was wild. Suspected government involvement in fixing games, 100% government doping of national team players, players and whole clubs picked up and moved at the will of administrators, insane team names, it's quite literally bonkers.
Leipzig's a city with a pretty crackers football story all in all.
@@BannersOnTheWall And how many of the teams from East Germany now play in the top division in Germany? Union Berlin and Leipzig are the only 2 and a big reason for that is the 50+1 rule. I get why the rule exists BUT it does significantly benefit clubs from the richer West German than the poorer East.
@@spikeychris but the problem is not the 50 plus 1 rule. The Problems are the still ongoing huge infrastructural differences between east and west germany
@@Noah-rw9on yes that plays a role as well but the 50 plus 1 rule also helps keep western german football clubs in the ascendency because they are in a more wealthy regions generally.

Leipzig not selling out games is kinda a meme...
When I was in Leipzig 2020 for Dreamhack 2020 in february I literally would have been given tickets for free... They were asking people in the city centre if they were up to watch Bundesliga... Because that fixture was nowhere near to be sold out. And they didn't could have had that...
I had to leave that day tough back to my at the time home Cologne.
And despite them rarely selling out, you literally have to buy fixtures as a combi ticket. Top fixtures like Bayer, Bayern, Dortmund with literally Heidenheim, Bochum and the like...
It's so emberassing, I love it 😂
Making fun of the most hated club for not having so many fans is kinda stupid. You could blame them for the way they were founded instead of laughing about them for not filling their stadium completely for a match against Bochum.
@@raphael5653 meanwhile my club you rarely get tickets on the free market.
And that is regardless they struggled to stay in the Bundesliga. Köln is selling out basically to members only. You can get Women’s and U21 or U18 tickets but rarely Bundesliga. The only time in the current season you could get tickets on the free market it was Köln - Braunschweig (after Braunschweig haven’t sold their allocated away tickets in full)
Which has been a rare sight for Köln since we were in lofty heights of Europa League and Coference League
I’m old enough to remember watching Lokomotiv Leipzig in the Cup Winners Cup final in 1987: they lost to Ajax with the goal scored by a young Marco van Basten.
You may not be old enough to remember Lokomotive Leipzig which was a strong East German club, such as Dynamo Dresden and FC Magdeburg often representing that country in various European competitions. Though I;m surprised as you are well read when it comes to football.

you cannot buy tradition. A club's history starts in a low league and develops by honest success, not by pay2win.
fckn hypocrite.
Sadly as a fan of Casino Salzburg back in the early 90's when I lived for a year near the Stadion Lehen RB did buy them out and change everything just like Leipzig. The sad part is that when I went back for a Austrian Bundesliga game during one of my visits it was empty. And I mean empty. It was cold, but that's winter in Europe and doesn't keep you guys inside so when I asked friends they said there isn't much support for them because they continually dominate the Austrian Bundesliga and then crash out early doors from the Champions League. True old school fans miss the purple and white and what Salzburg football used to be. As mentioned below it may have gone bankrupt so RB saved it but a lot (for lack of a better word) support a restart of the old Salzburg Austria club that plays in lower divisions still and at a small field on the other side of the airport from the big stadium. I haven't made it to one of those yet but I plan to
16:53 why did you have to do me like that Ellis?! 😭 I’m Italian born and bred and I look just like you 😭

If you want to experience an MLS club with more history and excitement, I can't recommend a trip to Columbus enough. First team in the league, and currently one of the best in the league, but you gotta get here before Wilfried Nancy gets poached by a Europen club. Absolutely top class manager.
Red Bull has given this great historical football city an awful reputation and they couldn't care less because MONEY 🤑 🤑 🤑
Difference in the MLS is that the only team that goes nuts and shows up is Columbus Crew while in Germany the only team that _doesn't_ is RB
Apart from the whole Red Bull thing, it is really strange to me that people from Leipzig would choose to support RB Leipzig given that the city already has two main teams with big histories (Lok and Chemie). I could understand it more if the club was located in a big city with no major football teams.
Also I have a friend who has a season ticket for VfB Stuttgart. He has been to every home game in the last 10 years or so except the games against Leipzig. He also doesn't watch the games on TV when we play them away.
It's precisely because of this. (I'm from Aue, not Leipzig, but sufficiently close I suppose)
Lok (VfB) and Chemie (Sachsen) Leipzig have tons of history between them. The First all german Champion in 1903, the East german rivalry, both relatively successful until East germany fell off. Both bancrupt a few times since.
An interresting picture of the interweaving club histories I found...
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Sachsen_Leipzig#/media/Datei:FC_Sachsen_Leipzig_grafische_Historie.png (blue Lok and green Chemie)
Bottom line is: they hate each other. With a passion. And no one in their right mind is going to touch any of them. And most important both seem to be okay with that.
So the best thing anyone could do was found a completely new club to rally around. (Well, Markranstädt... almost nobody knew or cared about before the takeover. It's still not the _right_ way to do it, but it was a way to get away with.)
Do i like the red bull way? No. Certainly not in football. They do some fancy niche sports though. Do I support a L team? No. We have football at home here. L is a 30 times bigger city so I'm not mad they have a team in a higher league. What I do understand is people being sick of the Lok/Chemie rivalry ruining both clubs and wanting a new start.
People hate failure. the energy drink club has played in the UCL or UEL since promotion. Also, won the DFB Pokal in the 21/22 and 22/23 seasons.
Because I as a person from Leipzig just think that the to be 6th biggest city in Germany (currently 8th) should have an adequate representation in terms of football quality. Honestly, Lok and Chemie are a shame from a football perspective. At this point they are just angry children because they are not relevant
@@CollineinfachCollinexBut how is it „adequate representation“ for an Eastern German city when an Austrian company basically ignores your values, buys your heritage and completely derails it? There has barely been any player from Eastern Germany even playing for Leipzig in recent years - with the exception of some youth players who only made a few appearances.

Fuck Ultras

The funny thing is, they built the RedBull Leipzig Stadium inside an old traditional stadium that could fit 100.000 to have a capacity of 40.000 seats only for Leipzig to be unable to fill the stadium
You should've talked a bit about the history of football in East Germany. I don't think these fans are "glory hunters", they're just happy to finally have a club in the top division. For all the hate that Red Bull gets, it's nice to see them invest in East German football.
That's actually a good point... Looking for maps (available on Reddit) for the 3 top divisions of Germany, i can count 8 clubs on the East Germany site. Two of them are Herta Berlin and Union Berlin.
It's true that RB Leipzig is "artificial" in a sense, but having a top flight for the people in Leipzig is a "win". I get the point for the german supporters to protest against it. It's a fair thing to do.
Not glory Hunters but happy to have a club in the first division. That is the definition of a glory hunter. They are not fans of a football club but customers of a marketing product and only care for the success and are happy to ignore the unfair advantages Red Bull has in comparison to other clubs in Germany.
@@the_l_generator1779 Nice job completely missing my point. It's about representation. Look at the state of East German football then compare it to what Red Bull has been able to give the region.
@@the_l_generator1779 Wrong, as @halnone said, you missed the point completely. That region had almost nothing. Then, one club started climbing. Climbing gathers supporters, fanbase. Ok, I agree that there's some marketing involved. But it's for the greater good, the existance of a club. If only old clubs deserve support, due to their supporters not being "glory hunting" (in your POV), nobody will create a new club anywhere...
@@nunocspinto They did not climb. They bought a starting place in the 5. division and than due to being a marketing product and circumventing 50+1 more then Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim etc. could spend huge and buy a squad that easily got to all division. I am sorry that East Germany has no clubs in higer division but Red Bull can never be accepted. And yeah nobody should just start a club. There are enough clubs with history in Germany so we do not need more marketing products.

Having been to a couple RB matches when they were in the lower leagues, the point about there being a sanitized match day experience is actually a big draw for a lot of fans. Leipzig’s traditional clubs (Chemie and Lok) both have had and still have massive issues with riots, hooliganism and general mismanagement. My feeling was that lots of people in Leipzig just want to be able to watch a somewhat successful team in peace.
RB could sell the Club anytime to Putin for a huge profit. Would be quite fitting in so many ways.

15:21 if you put his facial hair with Ellis’s, you’d nearly get a full beard
Living in Leipzig myself, I‘d agree on the term »family club«. To me, it feels like the experience tends to be one of a more casual activity that’s just as entertaining as anything you’d be doing on your typical weekend alone or with your kids. I think the brand(!) Red Bull, what they do and what they stand for besides selling beverages, emphasises that sort of entertainment. The target group of the clubs fanbase is literally the average Joe - they even partnered with the city of Leipzig to include some benefits (2x free or reduced tickets to a game I believe and some other little goodies) in their welcoming gift for citizens who’d move here. Ofc they target football enthusiasts; they have fan organisations and »Ultras« as well but for the most part i perceive it as described. Since the club does have little history to some or none according to others, there just isn’t that immersive, exciting and dramatic atmosphere you would get during a game of a traditional club.
Yet, I don’t think it’s entirely reprehensible because football should be enjoyable in a way where you don’t necessarily have to be a die-hard stan to feel included. And it’s RedBull still - they don’t have to try that much anyway…
On the other hand, the issue with the 50+1 rule and RB Staff making up most of the club‘s members is just horrific. I bet it’d be different if ordinary fans would be allowed to participate more and requirements for membership were adjusted. But for that, i think that literal industry plant of a football club has yet to achieve anything decent for people to care more about that situation. Evidently, they do not yet.
Anyways, great video and hope the two of you had a good time staying here!
So, a severed bulls head isn't a glass bottle or a packet of fruit pastilles you bought at the nearest LIDL. That's why you can bring it in to a football stadium. Very specific rules.

RB is no "east German" club though. They were "founded" after the fall of the wall. Only real eastern Bundesliga team in terms of history is Union. Technically RB isnt even a German club since their headquarters are in Austria.

Real football fans dont support Red Bull in Leipzig tho. They still can go to Lok or Chemie Leipzig, two big traditional clubs. You dont have to feel bad for capitalistic rats that hate football culture so much that they support Red Bull
Lok Leipzig and Chemie Leipzig are right there. No need to feel sorry for the people of Leipzig. They have other options than Red Bull.
Forgive me if this has been said elsewhere in the comments but I think you should go to a Saudi League game. Not sure if anyone would hate a particular club there but there’s certainly a lot of animosity towards their teams taking players in the primes of their careers from the established big leagues.
22:58 I disagree with this. Most MLS teams are franchises, which means their base is only made of people who support that team because it's the big team of the area.
True passion comes in the USL with all the local communities of the teams getting involved in making the club mean somethint
That’s the point though haha, I didn’t slate it either, I love MLS
except for the fact that USL teams are also franchises and their fan base is largely made up of people who support that team because it's the biggest in the area (as far as the USL championship is concerned)
All pro sports in the U.S. are pretty much franchises. USL run a franchise based league with requirements to be in certain leagues as well, which is why some are destined to be stuck in League One forever as they probably will never meet the requirements to move up to the Championship

The big problem with the game against Bochum was that the active fan community boycotted the game at the beginning because, according to their statements, there were many arbitrary stadium bans against some chaotic people. It was also extremely hot that day, which is why many people only stood in the shade and were not in their seats. If you really want to see a game in Leipzig, where there is more going on, you have to come against the big clubs or against Union Berlin (due to the location it is declared a derby).
Many who go to RB don't care that they hate you so much because in Leipzig you can see that money is used sensibly and you don't spend millions on "finished" players. Rather, you buy young players, some of whom are unknown, and develop them further and simply play very nice football.

I like Lok and the old school ground looks amazing but the stands are way to far from the pitch and make a good atmosphere almost impossible. Chemie is the place to be for a good atmosphere in Leipzig.
I can’t lie when I went to their game before the atmosphere was amazing for it. It did help it finished 8-2 with a hat trick of goals and assists in the same game

Bochum didn't sold out because they were boycotting RB Leipzig. You saw no Flags, no Banners because there were no ultras. (still louder than the RB Fans)
It so funny that Red Bull customers are angry that the "club" does not allow pyro and choreo. They support a marketing product that is all about family friendliness. What did they expect?
Most clubs in England ( if not the world) came from workplaces/ factories. Just because Red bull isn't over 100 years old, it's still a business.

"Besides lacking tradition: RB has bought its way to the top with the money of the soft drink manufacturer. Maybe they've done a good job, the problem is just: Many of the people who do this good job are also poached from other clubs with money that they haven't earned through football, but money that the corporation has pumped in. Additionally, they've found as many loopholes as possible to comply with the DFL's statutes. You've already noticed the connection of "Rasenballsport" and the club's crest. Moreover, the "Verein", that have to own the "majority" of the club's shares, only allows a small handful of members, all with good connections to the corporation.
By the way: "Ciao Ciao!" or "Tschau Tschau" is a common way to say "By!" in Germany. He didn't think you're Italiens.
I always feel like RB Leipzig is a toxic response to what happened with reunification. Investors from the West completely destroyed East German clubs like Lok or Chemie Leipzig. Currently, there are only two clubs that played in East German football now competing in the top two divisions of German football: Magdeburg and Union Berlin. East German football, although it wasn't as strong as its Western counterpart, was still fairly competitive, even internationally. Clubs like Magdeburg, Jena, or Lok Leipzig regularly advanced far in or even won international tournaments. The DFV also won Olympic gold in football. This ruin caused by reunification, evident in football, extended to other parts of life as well.
The thing is, Leipzig just *needs* a good football club because, historically, Leipzig is the sports city of Germany. From gymnastics and athletics to racing sports and more, countless Olympic medal winners and world records have come from Leipzig. (It even had the largest stadium in all of Germany.) But even that changed with reunification and the closing down of the DHfK, Leipzig's elite sports university, which was essentially shut down so that the experts could move to the DSHS Cologne and establish it as the number one elite sports university in Germany. Now, it feels like the capitalist extremes that tore down East German football are coming back to haunt the clubs that benefited most over 30 years ago.
First off: No city "needs" or "deserves" a football club, let alone a good one.
The capitalist extremes that you blame for destroying east german football just didn't exist. It was the socialist extremes of the DDR that destroyed or rather doomed east german football way before reunification. Since players weren't given the possibility to leave (the DDR basically held all of their population as captives, now if that isnt a real extreme), the clubs didn't have to really compete with the western european clubs to keep good players and as a result offered less pay, worse infrastructure etc. etc.. Maybe it would've been better to keep the east and west leagues apart for a longer amount of time (maybe 10 years), so real top clubs could form in east germany, but the initial loss of quality was always going to happen and it wasn't the fault of capitalism or the west.
I hate how many people outside of Germany that try to praise leipzig and act like their a good team thats good for football.
They are anti football and go against what the sport is about
What facial hair you talking about pal?
There isn't much that feels worse than RB, maybe even sexually transmitted diseases
you should ask the leipzig customers what fans they were before rb 😂😂😂 could be a funny thing
whats wrong about being a customer to a great game of football?
@@olec3448 everything. do you know who created football and who was able to go to the games? the leipzig customers are glory hunters, not more. if you love the game of football, you go to watch no matter what, but the reason all these people go there is because they have money and bought their promotions. you go to stadiums for the game and for the atmosphere. in leipzig (at least in the red bull arena) there is atmosphere like a graveyard. also the "fans" have completely no rights there since they are not members. being a fan of a club is a live decision. you love the club and live with it, or you become a plastic fan
@@tbn.z900 you have a very intolerant view of how people should behave when all they want is have some fun and watch football. graveyard atmosphere isnt even true and you see it in the video. let them enjoy their champions league football and blame clubs like hsv, schalke and köln for wasting their potential.
@@olec3448 😂😂 RB has no atmosphere at all. even worst than wolfsburg and hoffenheim, and thats hard to underbeat. if they watch football they could watch it on tv. you go to live games to have some stadium feeling. i've been to stadiums with 800 spectators and they had better atmosphere lol
What facial hair was anyone talking about Ellis when you have none and never will haha 😂😂😂😂
It’s gotta be Bristol city
9:54, £4.63! If i'm gonna pay that for a can, it better give me wings
Great video.
The amount of hate I receive as a supporter is astronomical. You have to have a thick skin as I've had threats on my life, family and even threatened to shut down the podcast.
The podcast isn't going away 😂
