I think the answer comes in how you ask the question. "Could Izuku Midoriya become a hero without a quirk?" "Could someone theoretically become a hero without a quirk?" "Would the story have been better if Izuku Midoriya became a hero without a quirk?" "Could Izuku Midoriya have fought and won every fight be does in the actual series?" All of those questions have different answers and it feels like everyone is on a different page on which of those questions is being asked. I like how your video tries to see if he hypothetically could instead of trying to use his quirk, or lack there-of, to make a commentary on the quality of the series and/or the fan base.

I honestly don’t think deku at the start of the story would be able to become one.
I mean deku didn’t have the experience needed to fight villains with quirks, which both mirio and knuckleduster had so they could hold their own against villains even when they were quirkless, but even they have nearly died in their fights, so deku most likely would die, and also consider the fact that people like allmight can be seriously injured to the point of being barely functioning as heroes, so a quirkless person wouldn’t have a great chance at having a successful career for a long stretch of time.
Deku also didn’t have access to any gadgets needed to become a hero and also didn’t know anyone who could provide them, since knuckleduster knows the broker giran, who provided him the electrical taser knuckles, painkillers and one special case had him have a pheromone cocktail to fight his possessed daughter.
Finally, a hero has to have a quirk that performs a certain purpose, and all the things deku could do, anyone else could do and more, so he probably wouldn’t be that great of a hero on actually fulfilling the necessary roles heroes typically do. I mean even compass kid had a more fulfilling role than deku could possibly have being quirkless, because he could at least point people to safety and find out where a criminal has left after committing a crime.

We don’t know he didn’t have access to support technologies. We don’t know anything about it. We do know the tech is powerful enough that it apparently isn’t generally allowed unless necessary in their tests and training. Which in turn implies it is extremely effective.

Deku got ripped and athletically capable because of All Might telling him he'd need too in order to have his quirk. If it wasn't for him he'd probably would've did the heros entry course weak and failed. Now for plot armor he would've had someone to say he needs to train in order to be a hero without a quirk. We know that he puts in work to get ahead and he's really analytical regardless of the ppl and events he's been through. I can definitely see him being a cool ass quirkless dude but he wouldn't be that guy to take down the big baddie. He'd be like Aizawa and widdle them down for someone else to come in. The story would definitely be a lot more darker too. I'm down with that! Vigilantes for the win!!!

Honestly if Deku didn't meet All Might in time to get OFA, he still would have been set up with Nighteye
Think about it, Deku is still a smart enough kid to make into the UA general course, he def would have gotten the attention of All Might eventually. And even though by that point All might wouldve already given his quirk to someone else, he still would undertake Deku as one of his projects since he can relate to being quirkless.
    Which brings in Nighteye
All though nighteye and deku didn't really like each other, ironically Nighteye represents probably the closest thing to a prime quirkless deku. They're both very analytical and intelligent so Nighteye def would've trained Deku.
Sadly, I don't think the government would've given Deku a hero's license since he's quirkless but Nighteye def would train him to be the brains behind other hero's. So I see deku working as perhaps part of a special intelligence secret service-like force behind the scenes but during the night he'd be an actual vigilante (Nighteye's fighting training plus gadgets would do him some good)
Here's some changes in his personality
He'd have way more self confidence
I don't think this Deku would be the same stammering Bakugo simp we see in the anime. Due to the fact that he'd spend most of his time with Nighteye instead of All might, Deku would be much more serious, less emotional, and even more of a smartass at times. Also the fact that he'd stay quirkless would set a sense of pessimism inside of him towards society. I'm not saying he'd hate heros, but I do think he wouldn't have the blind admiration he has for them now and would see hero society as much more biased towards those who are charismatic/have strong quirks. He'd be much more secretive, mysterious and wouldn't really focus on a social life. Basically I think his personality would be more of a mix between Aizawa and Nighteye rather than the Deku we see now. I do think he'd still strong admiration for All Might though.
I actually think this would be a really interesting but more gritty realistic story: Deku being an office man by day, badass vigilante by night.

I do also think that this Deku would easier get the sympathy of Vilains and would be more effective on reforming them. Think about it. One of the most common factor Villain choose their ways is due to quirk prejudice. Because people don't understand, or don't cate to understand their quirks. Enters quirkless Deku, a master annalist of Quirks and its potential. He will definitely see the greatness of every quirk he sees, providing the understanding many Villains desperately need. Imagine Toga, or Shigaraki, meeting this version of Deku on their early lives? A quirkless hero does exist, what would stop those who have wierd quirks to be one? Combined with Deku's Annalitic genous, he could reform this mis understood quirk owners in no time.

1:20 with all due respect, I honestly think you’re downplaying the effectiveness of Aizawa and shinso’s quirks.
Aizawa’s erasure quirk basically makes it so that a guy who has rocket arms can’t use his rocket arms, so his main source of combat would be gone and he can beat the snot out of them.
Shinso’s quirk thrives in how he only needs to interact with villains verbally to activate it, and we all know one thing villains like doing, and that is monologuing, so all shinso needs to do is speak to them, and then they are trapped and have do what he says.
While both needed training to be good at fighting villains, they were on a whole other level when compared to a quirkless person who couldn’t do either of the things they could.

The thing is that those two example you mentioned can be defeated rather easily if you are a proficient fighter, use weapons along with different kinds of gadgets and in the case of Shinso not saying a single word to him. How is Shinso's Quirk meant to be effective if it can only work if a villain responds verbally when all the villain has to do is being silent.

  • @CometX-ing
    @CometX-ing 3 года назад +8

Honestly, being a quirkless sets Deku back by a wide margin. I don’t think he could get into UA at all without his OFA, and that would naturally shut off all of his connections he got from UA. Aizawa and Shinso may need to physically train in order to fight, but their Aizawa in particular is able to not only level the playing field, but really put things in his favor against opponents who rely heavily on their quirk, but even he’s not great with naturally strong mutants. Shinso is at a major disadvantage fighting the same guy twice, really he probably isn’t the kind of Hero who should be fighting One on One and up close and personal due to how easy his quirk is to circumvent. Knuckle duster also wrecks his body doing what he does, needing to constantly be on pain meds to fight, and even then his abilities aren’t always enough. A quirkless hero would definitely be interesting and is 100% spin-off worthy, but given how MHA has progressed, it wouldn’t really work for Deku, and we basically would be getting a completely different series.

When I first heard of the series, I thought Izuku WAS going to be a powerless hero based on a very poorly worded description of the series I saw before I started watching. I think with the way the character is, he absolutely COULD be a Quirkless hero, but I'm glad for the developing carrier of a legacy coming of age thing the author eventually settled on.

    • @stefanradebach2889
      @stefanradebach2889 3 года назад +2

I to think that Izuku can be a quirkless hero if he trained very hard in body strength, learned how to use several weapons like katana and bo staff and created a couple of gadgets along with a specific body enhancement that gives him longer stamina and a healing factor like Deadpool which with the latter two shouldn't be impossible considering that this series has robots and mutated monsters through experiments like Nomu. I mean if DC and Marvel worlds can have advanced technology and scientific enhancements despite their worlds calendar wise taking place a century or two before where My Hero Academia is taking place then i don't see why we can't do something like that? Furthermore the whole carrier of a legacy story didn't have to be Izuku and instead could have been done with Mirio which would have been much better since Mirio actually worked hard to enter the Hero Course of UA despite having a very difficult quirk to control that also has it's own fair share of weaknesses which would have made him getting One For All more satisfying then have Izuku get it just because he was at the right place at the right time.

  • @isaiah.2523
    @isaiah.2523 3 года назад +7

I don't think Deku himself would be able to be a hero that's quirkless. He didn't train until All-Might and only studied heroes.
But if we had a different type person who worked and had that drive to become a hero and got ripped even before U.A, then he'd have a significantly higher chance in my opinion. If they practiced fighting styles and sharpening their senses and with the right support items then I think they'd prove a big enough point to get recommended into u.a. Putting them in the hero course at this place would be a stretch but if they did really good and kept on rigorously training and sharpening their senses, They'd be like a peak-human, something like captain america. And it IS possible because on Mirio's wiki it's stated that is strength is seen as superhuman. Speaking of Mirio, his ability to read the battle and predict what's going to happen would come naturally to a quirkless hero because they don't have a quirk so they'd have to always be reading the battlefield since they don't know the opponents quirk.
And with the right support items they'd be pretty good. But Deku just wouldn't take that path tbh.

Honestly i like how you actually gave a thought about how Midoriya being a quirkless hero could actually work rather than just lazily write it off as being impossible by people in this comment section just because it's easier than actually thinking about it and looking deeply into it. I mean if Mandalay and Spinner could become a hero and a villain respectively with very lackluster quirks then i don't see why Midoriya could become just as successful without one. I feel really frustrated when people put too much stock and importance onto quirks without considering other possibilities that exists.

I believe if you had the right know how, technique, and tactical/analytical skills, you’d be a competent hero. Also if you don’t necessarily need money to make all those gadgets. If you know the right technological know how,and have connections with people who have useful quirks to build gadgets(take denki’s electricity to help power it,or momo’s quirk to get the material). You could probably find a way to get what you need with relative ease. Another way you could look at it,is that lots of people are too reliant on a quirk to fight.

Quirkless Mirio was able to fight evenly with one of the most dangerous and powerful villains we'd seen up to that point (even still) and that was right on the spot without learning to fight with no quirk. We KNOW that quirkless humans DO indeed have the ability be heroes to some extent in this universe. How people still say it's not possible is beyond me.

Indeed. It's like these people who love the superhero setting of MHA haven't actually read superhero comics like Marvel and DC and they have heroes and villains that don't have superpowers but instead rely on their combat ability, weapon usage, gadgets and technology along with varying levels of body enhancements like healing factor for Deadpool and Deathstroke and Super Soldier Serum for Captain America. It's this kind of disinterest in questioning how one can't be a quirkless hero that frustrates me a lot because it basically amounts to giving up on finding alternatives and just readily accept the logic of how things work no matter how questionable it may be.

Deku would also have to be more brutal when fighting villains like breaking their arms or legs so that he has chance of winning or at least surviving. I feel very frustrated by how people blindly believes this narrative that you can't become a hero without a quirk just because Horikoshi said so. It's just as bad as people buying into the bullshit 27 planets thing from Dragon Ball Super just because Toriyama said so which gives me the perception that anime and manga fans don't even attempt at being critical of certain parts of writing and just accept them without even looking into it. They could have done this concept without much trouble by having Midoriya train at an early age very hard in body, have him specialize in weapon usage like bo staff, learn how to create and use a couple of gadgets at first and finally maybe even have his body enhanced with great agility, healing factor and huge stamina to make him fight longer while using cunning tacticts to overcome his foes. I mean for gods sake these type of things that i mentioned exists in Superhero comics with characters like Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Deathstroke, Deadpool and Captain America. Not to mention there are characters who participate in fighting despite having almost worthless quirks like Mandalay who sends her thoughts to other people, Spinner who climbs on wall and Mirio whose quirk is just phasing through things and while that quirk does give him a solid advantage i won't lie he still showed how strong he was when he defeated Class 1-A expect for Bakugo and Todoroki with much of that coming from himself and not his quirk.

He still used strategy before he "punches/kicks things harder and harder". lol Like for example in the muscular fight many people missed that he used the Delaware move to disperse Muscular's muscle shield, then the Detroit smash to knock him out. Again, I'm not saying he shouldn't have more strategical fights but I do feel many completely disregard his smaller elements of strategical thinking (for example with muscular considering to run away before fighting but realizing he could not out run him so wanting to let Kota at least escape before facing him head on, secure his arm in Muscular's muscle to limit his moves before landing a blow) before using his finishing moves. Some making it sound like he is a dummy who just screams and punches and doesn't think AT ALL. It's just so hyperbolic at times what people claim but I can understand the point they are trying to get across. I think it was more so due to his opponents have strength enhancement abilities as there primary mechanism of attack, so when it came to Gentle his ability allowed for a more flexible type of battle.

Mr Dan exclaims, I admit that the idea has potential, but there is one issue with the batman idea:
It could lead to deku being full of plot armour, because in the comics, batman had survived and recovered from things that would most likely kill or at least cripple a normal person, and his fights against gods have been written to place him in a greater favour than his more powerful foe, just because he’s always prepared and always has a contingency plan.
However, this is when batman is written poorly, and the concept still sounds interesting, but I’m honestly fine with the version of deku we got and here’s why:
Deku is a person who had been dealt a bad hand at life and after years of suffering, he proves his heroic spirit and gets a chance to achieve his dream, and with his new power, he works with this power to make it his own, but is aware that there were better options than him, and he doesn’t stop trying to be the best hero he can be.
Personally, I like a passing of the torch story more as it feels like fits with the whole “new generation take the place of the old generation to maintain society” theme .

Exactly! This idea can't work when Izuku was written as an introvert who wants to be a hero yet doesn't even consider training hard, learning different fighting styles and weapons along with making several gadgets to become a great one and maybe even some body enhancements like increased agility, stamina and a healing factor because if these Nomus can be made then i don't see how this isn't possible. I think it would work if Izuku despite being put down due to his dream did what i said above to spite those people, especially Bakugo to show that even a quirkless person can become a hero. Plus My Hero Academia takes place around 100 to 150 years since Quirks appeared if All For One and Garaki's ages are noted so even if technology did slow down significantly when quirks appeared it could have started to gain track after 50 years or so passed since quirks appeared and make it easier to create gadgets and tech that we see in Marvel and DC and those worlds take place long before where MHA is set. I just wished that Horikoshi gave this idea and chance and used it to explore Izuku's journey as a hero without a quirk but instead we get the rather cliched passing the torch story with One For All that could have been done with Mirio and to make it worse Izuku latter on receives all of the primary quirks from previous holders of One For All which not only makes little sense because why didn't All Might receive all of them since he was quirkless as well but makes Izuku into this Chosen One bullshit which i swear to god i absolutely despise this cliche no only for being extremely unoriginal but also ruined another noteworthy Anime character like Naruto Uzumaki. Overall though i'm happy that there are few people out there like you who actually put thoughts into this rather than dismiss it automatically just because it's easier to do.

Nice video! I would say it just doesn't fit for the story themes set up in MHA currently and the story power-scaling would have to be adjusted to accommodate (especially villains like Shigaraki, Overhaul in which Deku need Eri to defeat anyway, and Muscular). It's all really a matter of preference of story themes. You made some great points, but I'll play devil's advocate on some things to counter (All in good fun though, no harm. lol). *Incoming -- long comment warning* ...
Knuckleduster took on some antagonists, one specifically since he knew about the quirk because it was his (KD is seasoned fighter who also had his own quirk before so likely he has enhanced reflexes and skill due to being a previous pro hero and quirk user most of his life, which may be an advantage over a natural born quirkless person who had no experience with a quirk before), but he is not the main character. You can even see with the main character of Vigilantes - Koichi needed some versatility in his own quirk to be able to get as far in the story as he did with some opponents. Deku is also painted as a smart guy based on his observational skills/experiences to analyze, but not as naturally super intelligent compared to others like Momo (based on character stats/test scores) that is able make complex things. If he needed the intelligence boost for his character (as many suggest for his character for the quirkless hero model) that could essentially be seen like a 'quirk' of his own to be super smart in a way naturally like Principle Nezu. The quirkless hero could work but needs a different story set up for it to be the main character, not the current MHA set up, and not sure how far the story could go if it were to be a long running shonen series as MHA currently is. I would say characters like Aizawa, Shinso, and Stain use support items to help level the playing field to get people under the right conditions to maximize quirk usage. These characters already have pretty powerful quirks on their own though so we also have to take that into account. Them using support items is also kind of similar to Uraraka using martial arts to help with the combat limitations of her quirk. I would see these things more as a *supplement* for their quirk, but not a *replacement* of the actual quirk itself like gadgets would need to be.
The theme of MHA is made clear in episode 1/chapter 1: All men are NOT created equal. Societal inequality aka there is inherent unfairness in the world and it's not just one's own will power to change that alone. What people misunderstand about the story of MHA in respect to Deku's character is that many think the story should be more traditional in it's theme which is, individual effort being enough to change society (The example being Deku being a quirkless hero with him trying to change things by himself to prove society wrong aka an underdog story). This theme of individual effort is also reflected in All Might's character to some extent. With All Might, he tried to be the symbol of peace on his own, but even despite his effort as an individual, it led to the complacency of hero society to be vulnerable once he was not in a position to be that symbol.

In regard's to Deku character with his power, the themes are collective effort, which is nuanced in it's own way (people see this theme as a sign of weakness to need help to grow as an individual but it's also a good message to show that sometimes it's okay to have help to be successful and reach your goals, it doesn't need to be seen as negatively like 'cheating’ so long as you put your own effort in despite getting some help and recognize having the support of others along the way). He also represents legacy and the passing of the torch of the next generation. Despite being given opportunity (Deku blessed to be given powers), the path to success is not guaranteed and it still requires you to work hard (maybe even harder than most to live up to expectations) to turn that potential into something worthwhile (Deku may have the power but he has to work to tap into that potential otherwise it means nothing). If OFA is like a scholarship, then yes Deku is blessed to receive the scholarship, but he still has to work hard to actually earn the degree. lol OFA reflects that theme of collective effort as it is a power that was passed through many users, each user passing it on in hopes to defeat AFO, needing the collective power of the next user in hopes of future success. Showing why Deku getting OFA reflect this theme. Deku has to learn to not repeat the mistakes of All Might somehow, which likely is not being a lone pillar as a individual like he was so that the new generation as a whole can reflect societal change -- this will reflect that theme of success through collective effort.
So again, it's all a matter of preference and I think each of those different story themes have merits in their own way and hopeful people can find value in the themes MHA has set up even though it might not be what they expected/wanted from the story (it was also an interesting way to show that MHA sometimes subverts expectations). Sorry for this long comment. lol

I think to rewrite Deku to be quirkless the best way is to also rewrite All Might to be secretly quirkless and instead of One for All it's just a mantle and super intense training he passes on. Think something like Guts having superhuman strength to take on demons through intense training but for Deku I think it'd be reaction speed, some strength but more technique focused and a great analytical mind for battles.
I think Deku and All Might would have to meet earlier than the did (maybe being a secret vigilante from a young age) in the real MHA though or maybe set the story later. Tbh the school setting is a bit restrictive to him being quirkless I think that's why Knuckduster works in Vigilantes setting with them running away after battles a lot. I think fights would be more Jojo-esque as well trying to figure out the opponent and countering/neutralising their quirk (Just thought how funny it would be seeing Deku neutralise Bakugo with Talcum powder to stop him using his Nitroglycerine sweat XD then they have to duke it out hand-to-hand).

I don’t feel like Deku would be able to become a hero without a quirk.
The hero system is heavily set in favour of those with combative quirks, or at least quirks that can be used in combative ways. Even knuckleduster once had a quirk prior to becoming a hero.
I also feel like the idea of this is cool, but it undermines everything we have been shown in the series this far and it goes against the principles of the fictional universe this would have to exist in. There is only so much hero’s with quirks can do against villains with quirks. A quirkless hero would have absolutely no chance.
Especially against someone like current Shigaraki or AFO.
Aizawa and Shinzo have extremely good quirks, even in combative situations. It’s just the entrance exam favours more flashy quirks. Aizawa is still able to counter quirks and Shinzo is able to straight up stop people in their tracks.
Knuckleduster also used to be a hero with a quirk but he still doesn’t operate as a hero because he doesn’t have a quirk. Why would he be a vigilante if he could still operate without a quirk ?
I really feel like you downplayed the effectiveness of Aizawa’s quirk- like it’s the one thing right now keeping the hero’s from total annihilation from Shigaraki.
I feel like what we’ve been shown so far that Deku would have absolutely no chance with the current hero system especially if people like Shinzo don’t get a chance at first. When you mention him fighting Todoroki let’s be honest if he couldn’t blow away the ice with a finger flick. He would have no chance. Absolutely none.
Alternatively I could see him going into the support course or becoming a vigilante or a police officer.
Deku’s story also hinges on the lines of him becoming a possible villain in a way.

Another point is that technology has kind of take a back seat in the quirk world even the greatest new technology we’ve seen in mha is David shield’s quirk enhancing device which concentrates on quirks and I don’t think any amount of technology would be able to match up against Shigaraki and the next even more op generation of quirk users like eri.

Deku could probably become a fully-legal licensed hero, since the lower-ranking Hero Schools don't exactly seem to have high-standards when it comes to their students. Remember that one chick from Ketsubutsu Academy who's only power was folding her upper body into her lower body like a turtle? If she could get in, Deku could get in. Now, the real problem is, Deku probably won't be a hero for long. Deku is a mad-lad and his desire to save others at all costs borders on suicidal. Deku would have been dead meat 7 times over if he didn't have the power of OFA. Take Muscular for example. Even if Deku didn't have OFA, you bet that he's still going to run over there and try to stop him from killing a kid. This will eventually culminate in him getting killed by a Villain. Personally, I think the key would have been when he found out that he didn't have a quirk. At the start of the series, he's very weak, and doesn't train until he learns that he needs to be strong to properly inherit one for all, that's mostly because when he found out he was quirkless, he gave up, he connected having a quirk to being a hero, and thought that he needed one to accomplish that goal, so he didn't bother training his body. Also, look at some one the support items that exist, and like you said, some heroes have VERY specific abilities, and you never even bothered to mention nighteyem who's quirk can only be active for one hour before he has to wait an entire day before using it again. Sure, it's good in a one on one fight, but for something like a raid, or a war, he needs abilities and utility items to supplement his quirk.
Though, now that I think about it, the world of my hero is a competitive one, when the call goes out, you don't have the option of coming back for a second round, because another hero will come and finish the villain off if you retreat, and there in lies the challenge. He can be a hero, but, in the world of my hero, I don't see a quirkless hero making it into the top ten, or even top one hundred.

Whenever Batman takes tech or abilities from others? The only reason he can repurpose them is cause he's fucking rich and he's trained in every single art imaginable to be that smart and he had to basically learn to become a criminal to understand them.
    Deku IS. NOT. BATMAN.
He doesn't want to a be symbol of FEAR to villain or ANYONE. People in DC hero or villain are legit scared as fuck of Batman. That isn't what deku wants.
Why the fuck do people keep on trying to insist deku could be a quirkless hero when it's been made clear again and again that being a hero is impossible without powers?
So I guess knuckleduster a washed up pro hero knows better than ALL MIGHT, the number one hero in Japan?
Yeah no. All Might legit said to deku with a straight face that being a quirkless hero is not only impossible but it's reckless. 😒🤦
But sure let's assume he could be Batman without that shit feeling forced. 😒🤦😒🤦

Actually, in the first episode, Deku said, They got rid of that rule. Still, I agree with what you said.

Dan Exclaims! He would probably be the investor for Mei Hatsume. Hatsume would create all the gadgets for him to be a hero.

@@vicuscarrynp2924 EXACTLY. Mei already creates ridiculous armaments for him. If Deku makes it to UA, he obtains UA's resources. Best hero outfitters, best gadgets in the game, like he could totally do it!

It's possible and Koishi probably had that in mind for the one-shot.
To this day am angry that Midoria has not learned actual fighting techniques, seriously he only knows the judo shoulder throw. Even worst he's got shounen jump protag syndrome.....he's
only smart when the plot demands it😐

I actually have a oc Who is Quirkless. He’s able to fight because he trained like asta for like 10 years, is it mastery with many weapons and fighting styles, (even creating new moves based off his classmates), As a close relationship with Hatsumei and they build gadgets together.

All it would take is him not saving Bakugo and the sludge villain inevitably escaping and killing his mother in revenge for getting him caught by All Might (because evil is petty and he isn’t going to blame himself). I can easily see Izuku going full stop Batman. No one said he had to do it as a fourteen or fifteen year old, though people writing comments seem to think that for God knows what reason.
