As soon as you know about the game you are in the game and you play it for your intire life and as soon as you think of the game you loose the game. When you loose the game you have to announce to the room saying “I just lost the game”. Have fun

    Here's a mild mystery I've been grappling with for years: in Philosopher's Stone, Hermione says she asks the conductor when they'll be arriving and then in Prisoner of Azkaban the narrator tells us the snack lady is the only adult our fav trio has seen on the Hogwarts Express until they find Lupin asleep in the last car. So who (or what) drives the train?!

    • @rossmandigo9984
      @rossmandigo9984 4 года назад +11

    • @TheDizzyDook
      @TheDizzyDook 4 года назад +29

      @@rossmandigo9984 I think you may have misunderstood me. In book one Hermione mentions she has been to the front to ask the conductor when they'll arrive and she gets an answer from who ever it is driving the train. In book three the narrator tells us that Lupin is the first adult all three have ever seen on the train aside from the snack lady. I can find the quotes if you'd like. It just always struck me as interesting

      Maybe the conductor is a house elf?

    • @TheDizzyDook
      @TheDizzyDook 4 года назад +14

      @@paintedcrow Hmm, that's a good point I definitely hadn't considered. They do seem to have a knack for concealment which would be necessary for the Hogwarts Express. The only thing that gives me pause is the fact that driving the HE is a big responsibility. Aside from Dobby on occasion, and arguably Creature, I don't know of any reference to a house elf with a job that important. I would think a goblin would be given the job before a house elf. But then, would a goblin think it beneath him/her to tow wizard children around?

    • @busterman2731
      @busterman2731 4 года назад +19

      @@TheDizzyDook On the subject of House-Elf employment, Helga Hufflepuff herself decided to bring in house-elves to work in the Hogwarts kitchens so that they could avoid being abused in other positions. So Hogwarts has always and would most definitely continue to consider employing house-elves for school functions including possibly transportation to the school itself.
      However, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the trio seeing an adult on the train applies only to the people in the public compartments. I think of it as though the conductor being an adult is a given, however an old lady selling you sweets off a trolley and a random teacher sleeping right next to you both stick out like a sore thumb as first experiences with adults on a train that is thought to be filled with only students.

    I think HP is more based on Roman Myths rather than Nordic, example McGonagall’s first name is Minerva after the Roman form of Athena the goddess of wisdom. Another example is Remus Lupin, who is named after Remus the brother of Romulus the founder of Rome (both of which were raised by Lupa the wild goddess). So with all that,I have two theories about what the charms may have been:
    1. JKR meant that Aberforth was trying some “adult” charms on his goat as evidenced by the way JKR responded to the kid who asked in the forum once she knew the question came from an eight year old. This explains the Petronius very well seeing as it mostly reflects who or what you love, as seen in Tonks with her wolf Petronius, or with Harry since he loved his memories of his dad. This goes well with the Roman theme as both the Romans and the Greeks before them believed in magical creatures called Satyr or a Faun which had extreme libido.
    2. Another interpretation could be that Aberforth was trying to create a Golden Fleece. Seeing how a fleece is made from goats and going well with the magical aspects of Roman and Greek mythology it might be a good PG explanation. The importance of the Golden Fleece comes from its ability to heal the injured and bring back the dead so it even fits well with the Dumbledore family tragedy.

    • @alisos360
      @alisos360 4 года назад +19

      My bad, Rams are sheep not goats. The Golden Fleece myth was about a golden winged ram, I confused them with goats because the Romans used to wear goatskin cloaks in times of war.

    • @sophiejones7727

      I mean, that would be animal abuse. that's both a reason it would be considered inappropriate, and a reason why she wouldn't want to discuss it with a child. An eight year old isn't developed enough to understand what is wrong with that, and you don't want a kid trying that at home.

    The other thing you're missing about goats, is there was a long-standing insult against Scotsman that they would use their sheep 4 the ordinary use of women when a woman was not available or not willing.
    So the counter Scottish insult to Englishmen and the Englishman use the same insult against the Welsh is that they use goats for the same purpose instead because they could not even afford sheep.
    Which is basically a gig against the English and Welsh systems where common people no longer had grazing rights after the enclosure acts and so they only had enough room in their Garden to keep a goat. Whereas in Scotland Clan leaders continue to allow there Clan to graze sheep and other large animals on the private Estates once they became Nobles after the act of unification that made James the 6th of Scotland James the 1stof England.
    Basically that Scottish nobleman still treated the other clan members much better than an English peasant was treated.

      True, that’s probably the only concrete reason, but the goat, stag, and boar head are both pretty specific details to be so closely together. Perhaps JK when planning the books and world building did come across Valhalla and borrowed some imagery. This may be where the idea of Harry and James’s: stag came from, which also leads the the doe of Lily and Severus. Interesting to think of where these ideas originated.

    Another connection that I made was from Greek Mythology
    The Greek god Pan is a Faun and has the hindquarters, legs and horns of a goat. During the battle against Typhon and the Titans, Pan let out a horrendous screech (where the word panic comes from) which scared and scattered the monsters and titans. This helped aid Zeus to wind the war. ** Correct me if I’m wrong pls! ** In the book, Aberforth used his goat to scare away the deatheaters helping Harry and crew not get captured which helped them win the war.

      also, pan played a song on his panpipes to lull Typhon to sleep, so that Hermes could steel back Zeus's sinews, which Typhon had ripped out of his body, so unfortunately, your connection doesn't work :(
      though Pan DOES have his panic, which scares away his enemys

    I like to think that the DA actually stands for the dead who's preparing for battle, I mean like there was a passage to hog's head from the DA headquarter and Aberforth was serving the DA foods-also what does DA stands for -Dumbledore's army- or as the SuperCarlin fans like to call it the Death's army.
    I also like to think that the O.o.t.P is the living fighting, because I mean phoenix rebirth makes sense right?
    That's my theory major thanks for you reading it.

      Also also actually actUALLY! Mead is a very real drink. They have butterbeer, firewhiskey, gillywater, pumpkin juice and MEAD, and just in this one occasion?! That always rubbed me the wrong way! It has to have a special meaning!

    In the wizarding world, you generally wouldn't need anything to produce food. Hermione explains that, while you can't make food appear from thin air, you CAN multiply it with magic once you have some. That's why even the poor Weasleys never run out of food.

    Ah-ah, ah!
    Ah-ah, ah!
    We come from the land of the ice and snow
    From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow
    The hammer of the gods
    W'ell drive our ships to new lands
    To fight the horde, and sing and cry
    Valhalla, I am coming!
    On we sweep with threshing oar
    Our only goal will be the western shore
    Ah-ah, ah!
    Ah-ah, ah!
    We come from the land of the ice and snow
    From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow
    How soft your fields so green
    Can whisper tales of gore
    Of how we calmed the tides of war
    We are your overlords
    On we sweep with threshing oar
    Our only goal will be the western shore
    So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins
    For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing
    Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

    8:32: Yes! Yes! YES! Mythology to explain magic! My favorite kind of explanation!
    Also, did any other Magnus Chase fans get very excited when they started talking about Norse Mythology? No... just me?
    And, after a little research, I'd say Firewisky if I was in England since their drinking age is 18.

    This was really interesting! Great research. So then the tunnel is like the bifrost, and a bit of a stretch but like in Ragnarok Jörmungandr is the great serpent, and Voldemort has Negini. It kind of all fits the mythology. Nice!
