I have a degree in English. My focus was mythology and folklore. This is my favorite video of yours so far. This was very well researched. I love this theory.
Yeah it was fun hearing about the Mythology that is in the Harry Potter novels. I don’t know a lot about Norse Mythology, but I have read the Magnus Chase series by Rick Riordan and I related this to what I know!
I think HP is more based on Roman Myths rather than Nordic, example McGonagall’s first name is Minerva after the Roman form of Athena the goddess of wisdom. Another example is Remus Lupin, who is named after Remus the brother of Romulus the founder of Rome (both of which were raised by Lupa the wild goddess). So with all that,I have two theories about what the charms may have been: 1. JKR meant that Aberforth was trying some “adult” charms on his goat as evidenced by the way JKR responded to the kid who asked in the forum once she knew the question came from an eight year old. This explains the Petronius very well seeing as it mostly reflects who or what you love, as seen in Tonks with her wolf Petronius, or with Harry since he loved his memories of his dad. This goes well with the Roman theme as both the Romans and the Greeks before them believed in magical creatures called Satyr or a Faun which had extreme libido. 2. Another interpretation could be that Aberforth was trying to create a Golden Fleece. Seeing how a fleece is made from goats and going well with the magical aspects of Roman and Greek mythology it might be a good PG explanation. The importance of the Golden Fleece comes from its ability to heal the injured and bring back the dead so it even fits well with the Dumbledore family tragedy.
My bad, Rams are sheep not goats. The Golden Fleece myth was about a golden winged ram, I confused them with goats because the Romans used to wear goatskin cloaks in times of war.
...Goat Fiber from goat’s sheered for fiber is still called Wool. 🙄 You have wool-goats and milk-goats and some breeds are both. Cashmere? Yeah, that’s goat wool...from a kashmir goat.
I literally did a lesson in school about th latin (roman) and Greek behind HP but I think there was one Norse thing in there too so I think it gets things from all of them
3:58 You'd think that, but if you have ever been to a goat farm, they have a very distinct smell. Though the real question now is when has Harry ever been to a place with a lot of goats before.
Doesn't seem that far-fetched that the Dursleys would have considered a goat farm a good place to leave Harry to be babysat while they had a fun holiday with Dudley.
Could also be an early school/kindergarten excursion. To a farm. Maybe the Dursley’s found the idea of Harry picking up dung during something that was supposed to be fun, entertaining.
And why would that be in any form an innapropriate charm and why wouldn't JK tell this to an eight year old? You have to put your mind back in the gutter!
As far as any 8 year old is concerned cleaning is a heinous sin and " inappropriate" 😜 But can you imagine the parental out cry if she discussed inappropriate charms with a kid who still believes in Santa and tooth fairy? Political correctness rears its ugly head
I mean, that would be animal abuse. that's both a reason it would be considered inappropriate, and a reason why she wouldn't want to discuss it with a child. An eight year old isn't developed enough to understand what is wrong with that, and you don't want a kid trying that at home.
On the one hand I agree, whatever he did was definitely inappropriate in the R rated sense. On the other, I like the direction this video went, and even for wizards drinking alcohol that came from a goat's udder seems gross. I can also imagine why JK wouldn't want to explain Aberforth's mead milking scam to an eight year old.
I also really like the idea that goats are typically sacrificial animals to the gods in a lot of cultures and sure enough Ariana was the sacrifice for Dumbledore to change his ways. Dumbledore and Grindelwald being the best wizards of their time and dare I say it, almost godly.
7:33 Yes i think she knew what she was talking about there, i don't think she simplified the answer for the kid as much as just cleaning it up. I think she referenced sheep there for a reason, and i think it wasn't a very, well, pleasant reason😂
Ooh, that's a much better explanation. I assumed "inappropriate charms" were like INAPPROPRIATE, and she asked that girl how old she was because she was thinking "hmmm, this is not a reference to explain to kids" Always made me real uncomfortable with Aberforth as a character.
@@jozef09 Thanks for pointing out my typos, now will you focus on your spelling before judging others. Because unless I'm mistaken words don't have spaces between them.
JediKnightK - By “fouse” do you mean focus? Maybe I just missed an obvious generational joke. Who knows. Still, spelling is an important skill if you want to be taken seriously. Also, *because. Cause has an entirely different meaning (not to mention a different pronunciation as well). The generally accepted abbreviations for because are: cuz coz b/c
@@mena94x3 And your point is, "cuz" I don't see a problem. Maybe you shouldn't judge people. I don't, unless I there a reason. Because I am a fun person, and when I'm serious I am very serious. By the way all those abbreviations are not even real words. I think someone needs to retake English. Because all of them would not look good on a resume. They would think you can't spell right. Good day to you
The other thing you're missing about goats, is there was a long-standing insult against Scotsman that they would use their sheep 4 the ordinary use of women when a woman was not available or not willing. So the counter Scottish insult to Englishmen and the Englishman use the same insult against the Welsh is that they use goats for the same purpose instead because they could not even afford sheep. Which is basically a gig against the English and Welsh systems where common people no longer had grazing rights after the enclosure acts and so they only had enough room in their Garden to keep a goat. Whereas in Scotland Clan leaders continue to allow there Clan to graze sheep and other large animals on the private Estates once they became Nobles after the act of unification that made James the 6th of Scotland James the 1stof England. Basically that Scottish nobleman still treated the other clan members much better than an English peasant was treated.
In the 7th book, Aberforth explains simply that Arianna used to help him tend the goats. It would help keep her calm. Of COURSE he has a goat as his patronus and keeps them in honor of her. Goats milk is a great substitute for cows milk and easier to tend on a smaller property. They are also good to use as a "lawn mower"
True, that’s probably the only concrete reason, but the goat, stag, and boar head are both pretty specific details to be so closely together. Perhaps JK when planning the books and world building did come across Valhalla and borrowed some imagery. This may be where the idea of Harry and James’s: stag came from, which also leads the the doe of Lily and Severus. Interesting to think of where these ideas originated.
8:20 All a could think of in that moment was “please don’t tell me he is going to talk about that time Loki tied himself to a goat”... And now I continued watching and are a little irritated because earlier today my friends and I hade a fight because they pronounced it Valhalla but it is Valhall in Swedish and I am still angry at them
Another connection that I made was from Greek Mythology The Greek god Pan is a Faun and has the hindquarters, legs and horns of a goat. During the battle against Typhon and the Titans, Pan let out a horrendous screech (where the word panic comes from) which scared and scattered the monsters and titans. This helped aid Zeus to wind the war. ** Correct me if I’m wrong pls! ** In the book, Aberforth used his goat to scare away the deatheaters helping Harry and crew not get captured which helped them win the war.
You’re right about Pan’s scream, but I believe it was a minor satyr god that tricked Typhon into falling asleep. But Pan’s scream did scare people and scattered enemies
you said correct you, so I shall In Greek mythology, they're called Satyrs (fauns are roman) also, pan played a song on his panpipes to lull Typhon to sleep, so that Hermes could steel back Zeus's sinews, which Typhon had ripped out of his body, so unfortunately, your connection doesn't work :( though Pan DOES have his panic, which scares away his enemys
Goats are also associated with Yule in Scandinavian lore. They help deliver presents like reindeer help Santa in modern times and is likely the inspiration for it.
Son is Albus Daughter is Ariana Avenger is Credence or Aurelius (or what ever you want to call him.) Wings is phoenix "A son cruelly banished Despair of the daughter Return, great avenger With wings from the water."
Thank you Magnus chase for giving me enough background info to guess where this was going. Thanks for all of the effort put into this and other videos guys!
Omg same, our goats have beards too. And like they're extremely cunning. Like don't underestimate goats. No fence can stop them from getting the juicy grass from the neighbouring field.

Yes, Aberforth was a goat charmer. This is one of those jokes that really doesn't seem too complicated once I was old enough to start understanding adult/crude humor.
Mountain goats have anti-gravitational magic. Have you seen them standing on nearly vertical, smooth walls? About the charms... I think it was Ariana (goat-related name, BTW) who accidentally charmed the goats. Aberforth just covered for her.
"æ" depends a lot on which language we're talking about, tho😅 Isn't it only pronounced as a short "a" in Norwegian? While Old Norse is said to be very similar to modern Icelandic?
@@lampekartoffel Aegishjálmur/Aesir/Æsir/Ægir, Danish, Norwegian, and Icelandic it's the same pronunciation.... But for the most part, Icelandic is dramatically different in pronunciation as it's closer to Old Norse than to the modern Scandinavian languages. As Emilie Sophie writes in her comment. I liked this theory all in all but I feel like there's one flaw to it; when Ben was telling us that the dead preparing for battle is basically the ones who's supporting harry, I think there's another explanation. The 2 major groups that's fighting the death eaters in the battle of hogsward are the D.A. or Dumbledore's army and the O.o.t.P or the order of the phoenix. I like to think that the DA actually stands for the dead who's preparing for battle, I mean like there was a passage to hog's head from the DA headquarter and Aberforth was serving the DA foods-also what does DA stands for -Dumbledore's army- or as the SuperCarlin fans like to call it the Death's army. I also like to think that the O.o.t.P is the living fighting, because I mean phoenix rebirth makes sense right? That's my theory major thanks for you reading it.
Also also actually actUALLY! Mead is a very real drink. They have butterbeer, firewhiskey, gillywater, pumpkin juice and MEAD, and just in this one occasion?! That always rubbed me the wrong way! It has to have a special meaning!
In the wizarding world, you generally wouldn't need anything to produce food. Hermione explains that, while you can't make food appear from thin air, you CAN multiply it with magic once you have some. That's why even the poor Weasleys never run out of food.

8:32: Yes! Yes! YES! Mythology to explain magic! My favorite kind of explanation! Also, did any other Magnus Chase fans get very excited when they started talking about Norse Mythology? No... just me? And, after a little research, I'd say Firewisky if I was in England since their drinking age is 18.
I didn't get excited, because of Magnus Chase as I have been a fan of Norse Mythology(and plenty of others) for a long, long time, but I am a Magnus Chase fan too :P
This was really interesting! Great research. So then the tunnel is like the bifrost, and a bit of a stretch but like in Ragnarok Jörmungandr is the great serpent, and Voldemort has Negini. It kind of all fits the mythology. Nice!

Doesn't seem that far-fetched that the Dursleys would have considered a goat farm a good place to leave Harry to be babysat while they had a fun holiday with Dudley.
Didnt Harry go to the zoo in the first book? If he did they would almost certainly have seen goats.
He basically made a guess after knowing of goats.
As far as any 8 year old is concerned cleaning is a heinous sin and " inappropriate" 😜
But can you imagine the parental out cry if she discussed inappropriate charms with a kid who still believes in Santa and tooth fairy? Political correctness rears its ugly head
I mean, that would be animal abuse. that's both a reason it would be considered inappropriate, and a reason why she wouldn't want to discuss it with a child. An eight year old isn't developed enough to understand what is wrong with that, and you don't want a kid trying that at home.
Tho Mas, EXACTLY.
What a mind bomb! But Ben, I think everyone is really interested to know: what is happening with your facial hair?
Keer_Kanos THANK YOU I’ve been searching the comments and no one has said anything!
FINALLY it's been driving me nuts and nobody seemed to be mentioning it!
This is why I came here, I cannot believe no one else has mentioned it!
This is the only reason I scrolled down to the comments.
For real! My husband and I were watching and saying “please explain the beard.”
There's something I didn't know I needed, but I expect nothing less than a surprise from SCB!

"he pays me to"
AHAHAHAHA
7:33 Yes i think she knew what she was talking about there, i don't think she simplified the answer for the kid as much as just cleaning it up. I think she referenced sheep there for a reason, and i think it wasn't a very, well, pleasant reason😂
Ooh, that's a much better explanation. I assumed "inappropriate charms" were like INAPPROPRIATE, and she asked that girl how old she was because she was thinking "hmmm, this is not a reference to explain to kids"
Always made me real uncomfortable with Aberforth as a character.
Ben is missing a chunk of beard and I can’t unsee it.
me too
I noticed it from the beginning and was hoping another comment mentioned it

Me 10 minutes and some seconds into this theory: Holy fudgegalleon
In the 7th book, Aberforth explains simply that Arianna used to help him tend the goats. It would help keep her calm.
Of COURSE he has a goat as his patronus and keeps them in honor of her.
Goats milk is a great substitute for cows milk and easier to tend on a smaller property. They are also good to use as a "lawn mower"
This is almost definitely the correct answer.
That makes alot of sense
True, that’s probably the only concrete reason, but the goat, stag, and boar head are both pretty specific details to be so closely together. Perhaps JK when planning the books and world building did come across Valhalla and borrowed some imagery. This may be where the idea of Harry and James’s: stag came from, which also leads the the doe of Lily and Severus. Interesting to think of where these ideas originated.
They are good "lawnmowers" if you only have lawn. Goats prefer tree branches and tree bark.
Sounds like something Aberforth would say to cover his tracks
8:20 All a could think of in that moment was “please don’t tell me he is going to talk about that time Loki tied himself to a goat”... And now I continued watching and are a little irritated because earlier today my friends and I hade a fight because they pronounced it Valhalla but it is Valhall in Swedish and I am still angry at them
Another connection that I made was from Greek Mythology
The Greek god Pan is a Faun and has the hindquarters, legs and horns of a goat.
O my gosh.
You’re right about Pan’s scream, but I believe it was a minor satyr god that tricked Typhon into falling asleep. But Pan’s scream did scare people and scattered enemies
you said correct you, so I shall
In Greek mythology, they're called Satyrs (fauns are roman)
also, pan played a song on his panpipes to lull Typhon to sleep, so that Hermes could steel back Zeus's sinews, which Typhon had ripped out of his body, so unfortunately, your connection doesn't work :(
though Pan DOES have his panic, which scares away his enemys
Goats are also associated with Yule in Scandinavian lore. They help deliver presents like reindeer help Santa in modern times and is likely the inspiration for it.

I was a bit confused myself. Just missing the one part. Hard to not look.

it's because aberforth is the GOAT by helping harry, Hermione and ron.

Michael Jordan took that personal and became the greatest wizard of all time

Honestly for some reason I thought he was going to talk about Otis and Marvin (or whatever their fancy Norse names are). They are thors goats who pull his chariot and get slaughtered every night for food and resurrected every morning.
The army in Valhalla is dead, but has been brought back like The Phoenix, as in Order Of.

“Charms” just seems like a polite way for JK to say something else...
Yes, Aberforth was a goat charmer. This is one of those jokes that really doesn't seem too complicated once I was old enough to start understanding adult/crude humor.
I would like this comment but it has 69 likes already, so...
@@aparadoxicalone And now it's 96.
I was looking for this comment. If this theory was what JK Rowling was implying I don’t know why an 8 year old shouldn’t hear it
Amelia Garcia, you don’t know why JK Rowling wouldn’t talk about zoophilia to an 8-year-old?
Mountain goats have anti-gravitational magic. Have you seen them standing on nearly vertical, smooth walls? About the charms... I think it was Ariana (goat-related name, BTW) who accidentally charmed the goats. Aberforth just covered for her.
:-O
I like how you're doing the quotes. Nice backdrop and glowing text
For future reference: The “æ” makes a short “a” sound and the “ð” makes a “th” sound.
"æ" depends a lot on which language we're talking about, tho😅
Isn't it only pronounced as a short "a" in Norwegian? While Old Norse is said to be very similar to modern Icelandic?
Random dane here.. æ on danish is like a long eehh
in norwegian æ would make the sound you would make when you say aaa, but it is shorter
@@lampekartoffel Aegishjálmur/Aesir/Æsir/Ægir, Danish, Norwegian, and Icelandic it's the same pronunciation.... At least... yet we also have ä and ö but these are more common in swedish and norwegian than danish though...
I learned it myself- Eg lærði það sjálfir - Jeg lærte det selv. (English - Icelandic - Danish)
@@Marvinuser @Rex Jensen ä and ö don't exist in Danish, we have æ and ø instead, while æ and ø are also predominant in Norwegian over ä and ö. As for pronunciation, some words are the same or similar between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, though the meaning can vary quite drastically. But for the most part, Icelandic is dramatically different in pronunciation as it's closer to Old Norse than to the modern Scandinavian languages.
As Emilie Sophie writes in her comment. The Danish pronunciation of æ is more like a long eehh sound with your tounge back and to the roof of the mouth, while in Norwegian it's a short ah sound with a more flat tounge, though it's still a bit more in the back of the mouth.

Well done, guys. That is hilarious and somehow pointed.
